Abstract:In this paper, we revisit the effect of flat bands on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction by using a coordinate transformation that detangles flat-band states from dispersive ones. Under this transformation, original flat-band systems containing magnetic impurities are mapped onto a generalized Fano-Anderson model, where flat-band states act as Fano defects. From this perspective, several features of exact RKKY couplings calculated numerically can be understood easily. As an illustrative example, we analyze a dimerized diamond chain model, which can exhibit either gapped or gapless spectra depending on the ratio of hopping integrals. We find that anomalous decay in the RKKY couplings arises exclusively in the gapless case and with specific magnetic coupling configurations. Furthermore, the conventional wisdom regarding the signs of RKKY interactions breaks down under certain conditions. These subtleties arising from flat bands find explanation within our present approach. Our investigation offers deeper insights into how flat bands influence carrier-mediated exchange interactions, with implications extending to broader contexts.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the influence of flat bands on the Ruderman - Kittel - Kasuya - Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Specifically, by using coordinate transformation to disentangle the entanglement between flat - band states and dispersive states, the author maps the original flat - band system containing magnetic impurities into a generalized Fano - Anderson model, in which the flat - band states act as Fano defects. This method makes some exact RKKY coupling characteristics obtained by numerical calculations easier to understand.
### Main research questions
1. **Specific influence of flat bands on RKKY interaction**:
- The author analyzed a dimerized diamond - chain model, which can exhibit gapped or gapless spectra, depending on the ratio of hopping integrals.
- It was found that in the gapless case, the RKKY coupling shows an anomalous decay, and this anomalous decay is particularly obvious under specific magnetic - coupling configurations.
- In addition, the traditional common sense about the sign of the RKKY interaction no longer holds under certain conditions.
2. **RKKY coupling behavior in different gap cases**:
- For gapped systems (such as stub lattices), the degenerate perturbation theory agrees well with the numerical data.
- For gapless systems (such as diamond lattices), non - perturbative methods become crucial.
3. **RKKY coupling characteristics in specific models**:
- The author studied in detail the dimerized diamond - chain model, in which the hopping - integral ratio is \(\lambda\), and magnetic impurities can be coupled to the B and C sub - lattices with different strengths \(x\).
- When \(\lambda = 1\) and \(x = 0\), the RKKY coupling shows abnormal decay laws, namely \(1/R^3\) and \(1/R^5\) respectively.
- When \(\lambda = 1\) and \(x < 0\), the signs of the RKKY coupling between different sub - lattices do not conform to the general results of half - filled bipartite lattices, although the traditional \(1/R\) decay still exists.
### Conclusions
- By the method of coordinate transformation, the author maps the system into a generalized Fano - Anderson model, revealing the important role of flat - band states in the RKKY interaction.
- This method not only explains the anomalous decay phenomenon observed in numerical calculations, but also provides a new perspective for understanding how flat bands affect carrier - mediated exchange interactions.
- Although the research focuses on one - dimensional models, the conclusions obtained may be applicable to a wider range of physical systems.
Through these studies, the author provides in - depth insights into understanding the influence of flat bands on the RKKY interaction, which is of great significance for research in the field of condensed - matter physics.
