Abstract:Modern unmanned technologies make it possible to implement them in almost all industries, including radiation monitoring. Already in 2011, at the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, the first drones were demonstrated to measure the radiation background of the territories. Improvement of such devices is one of the topical directions. Our research team has proposed the concept of a gamma radiation detector module for unmanned aerial vehicles. The concept is represented by a matrix of modernized silicon photomultipliers based on silicon structures. The new structures have a design of deep pixel photodiodes of the MLPD type. Today experimental samples have superiority in such parameters as high efficiency of registration of ionizing radiation. Also, such parameters as low sensitivity to vibrations and low power consumption of photodiodes make it possible to integrate them into unmanned and small-sized radiation monitoring systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the deficiencies in the use of traditional gamma - ray detectors in radiation monitoring, especially in the application on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Specifically, traditional detectors based on photomultiplier tubes have disadvantages such as large volume, heavy weight, high power consumption and sensitivity to vibration. These factors limit their effective use on small or mobile platforms such as UAVs. To overcome these problems, the research team proposed the concept of a new - type compact gamma - ray detection module, which is based on modern silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), especially the MLPD - type structure with a deep - pixel photodiode design. This new - type detector shows superior performance in ionization radiation detection efficiency, low vibration sensitivity and low power consumption, and is very suitable for integration into unmanned and small - scale radiation monitoring systems. By developing this efficient and compact gamma - ray detection module, the paper aims to improve the radiation monitoring capabilities of UAVs in areas after nuclear accidents, hard - to - reach places and other critical infrastructures, thereby reducing the risk of personnel exposure to the radiation environment and at the same time improving the efficiency and accuracy of monitoring.
