Abstract:We introduce the notion of self-similar actions of grouopids on other groupoids and Fell bundles. This leads to a new imprimitivity theorem arising from such dynamics, generalizing many earlier imprimitivity theorems involving group and groupoid actions.

Abstract:We show that the dynamical system associated by Putnam to a pair of graph embeddings is identical to the shift map on the limit space of a self-similar groupoid action on a graph. Moreover, performing a certain out-split on said graph gives rise to a Katsura groupoid action on the out-split graph whose associated limit space dynamical system is conjugate to the previous one. We characterise the self-similar properties of these groupoids in terms of properties of their defining data, two matrices $A$, $B$. We prove a large class of the associated limit spaces are bundles of circles and points which fibre over a totally disconnected space, and the dynamics restricted to each circle is of the form $z\to z^{n}$. Moreover, we find a planar embedding of these spaces, thereby answering a question Putnam posed in his paper.

Abstract:Given a 4-manifold with a homologically trivial and locally-linear cyclic group action, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of equivariant bundles. The conditions are derived from the twisted signature formula and are in the form of congruence relations between the fixed point data and the isotropy representations.

Abstract:We introduce a natural concept of positive definiteness for bundle maps between Fell bundles over (possibly different) discrete groups and describe several examples. Such maps induce completely positive maps between the associated full cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras in a functorial way. Under the assumption that the kernel of the homomorphism connecting the groups under consideration is amenable, they also induce completely positive maps between the associated reduced cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we define an approximation property for a Fell bundle over a discrete group which generalizes Exel's approximation property and still implies the weak containment property. Both approximation properties coincide when the unit fibre is nuclear.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of groupoid pre-equivalences and prove that they give rise to groupoid equivalences by taking certain quotients. Then, given an equivalence of Fell bundles $\mathscr{B}$ and $\mathscr{C}$ and another equivalence between $\mathscr{C}$ and $\mathscr{D}$, we construct an equivalence between $\mathscr{B}$ and $\mathscr{D}$ out of the tensor product bundle. As a consequence, we obtain that Fell bundle equivalence is indeed an equivalence relation.
Homology and K-theory for self-similar actions of groups and groupoids

Abstract:Nekrashevych associated to each self-similar group action an ample groupoid and a C*-algebra. We provide exact sequences to compute the homology of the groupoid and the K-theory of the C*-algebra in terms of the homology of the group and K-theory of the group C*-algebra via the transfer map and the virtual endomorphism. Complete computations are then performed for the Grigorchuk group, the Grigorchuk--Erschler group, Gupta--Sidki groups and many others. Results are proved more generally for self-similar groupoids. As a consequence of our results and recent results of Xin Li, we are able to show that Röver's simple group containing the Grigorchuk group is rationally acyclic but has nontrivial Schur multiplier. We prove many more Röver--Nekrashevych groups of self-similar groups are rationally acyclic.

Abstract:This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.

Residually Finite Partial Actions and MF Fell Bundles

Abstract:We study Blackadar and Kirchberg's matricial field (MF) property and quasidiagonality in cross-sectional C*-algebras constructed from Fell Bundles and, in particular, from partial C*-dynamical systems. In doing so we generalize Kerr and Nowak's notion of a residually finite action to partial topological dynamical systems. We look at some examples exhibiting this property including the partial Bernoulli shift which produces an MF reduced crossed product provided the group in question is exact, residually finite, and admits an MF reduced group C*-algebra.

Abstract:We present a real-space adaptive-coordinate method, which combines the advantages of the finite-difference approach with the accuracy and flexibility of the adaptive coordinate method. The discretized Kohn-Sham equations are written in generalized curvilinear coordinates and solved self-consistently by means of an iterative approach. The Poisson equation is solved in real space using the Multigrid algorithm. We implemented the method on a massively parallel computer, and applied it to the calculation of the equilibrium geometry and harmonic vibrational frequencies of the CO_2, CO, N_2 and F_2 molecules, yielding excellent agreement with the results of accurate quantum chemistry and Local Density Functional calculations.

Abstract:Abstract For a maximal coaction δ of a discrete group G on a C *-algebra A and a normal subgroup N of G , there are at least three natural A × G × δ | N - A × δ |1 G/N imprimitivity bimodules: Mansfield's bimodule ; the bimodule assembled by Ng from Green's imprimitivity bimodule and Katayama duality; and the bimodule assembled from and the crossed-product Mansfield bimodule . We show that all three of these are isomorphic, so that the corresponding inducing maps on representations are identical. This can be interpreted as saying that Mansfield and Green induction are inverses of one another ‘modulo Katayama duality’. These results pass to twisted coactions; dual results starting with an action are also given.

Abstract:Given a finitely generated group G , the possible actions of G on the real line (without global fixed points), considered up to semi‐conjugacy, can be encoded by the space of orbits of a flow on a compact space (Y,Φ) naturally associated with G and uniquely defined up to flow equivalence, that we call the Deroin space of G . We show a realisation result: every expansive flow (Y,Φ) on a compact metrisable space of topological dimension 1, satisfying some mild additional assumptions, arises as the Deroin space of a finitely generated group. This is proven by identifying the Deroin space of an explicit family of groups acting on suspension flows of subshifts, which is a variant of a construction introduced by the second and fourth authors. This result provides a source of examples of finitely generated groups satisfying various new phenomena for actions on the line, related to their rigidity/flexibility properties and to the structure of (path‐)connected components of the space of actions.

On the classification of multiplicity-free Hamiltonian actions by regular proper symplectic groupoids

Abstract:In this paper we study a natural generalization of symplectic toric manifolds in the context of regular Poisson manifolds of compact types. To be more precise, we consider a class of multiplicity-free Hamiltonian actions by regular proper symplectic groupoids that we call faithful. Given such a groupoid, we classify its faithful multiplicity-free Hamiltonian actions in terms of what we call Delzant subspaces of its orbit space -- certain `suborbifolds with corners' satisfying the Delzant condition relative to the integral affine orbifold structure of the orbit space. This encompasses both the classification of symplectic toric manifolds (due to Delzant) in terms of Delzant polytopes and the classification of proper Lagrangian fibrations over an integral affine base manifold (due to Duistermaat) in terms of a sheaf cohomology group. Each Delzant subspace comes with an orbifold version of this cohomology, the degree one part of which classifies faithful multiplicity-free Hamiltonian actions with momentum map image equal to the Delzant subspace, provided there exists such an action. The obstruction to existence is encoded by a degree two class in this cohomology: the Lagrangian Dixmier-Douady class. In addition to the above, we introduce another invariant, which leads to a variation of our classification result involving only classical sheaf cohomology and the group cohomology of certain modules for the isotropy groups of the groupoid.

Abstract:We show that if $Å$ is a Fell bundle over a locally compact group $G$, then there is a natural coaction $\delta$ of $G$ on the Fell-bundle $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,Å)$ such that if $\hat{\delta}$ is the dual action of $G$ on the crossed product $C^*(G,Å) \rtimes_{\delta} G$, then the full crossed product $(C^*(G,Å) \rtimes_{\delta}G)\rtimes_{\hat{\delta}}G$ is canonically isomorphic to $C^*(G,Å) \otimes\KK(L^2(G))$. Hence the coaction $\delta$ is maximal.

Abstract:We extend the classical Baire category approach, used in proving the finite generator theorem of Krieger, the homomorphism theorem of Sinai and the isomorphism theorem of Ornstein, applying a similar reasoning to the case of actions of countably infinite amenable groups. In principle we follow the lines of the paper by Burton, Keane and Serafin (\cite{BKS}), showing that measures defining homomorphisms or isomorphisms form residual subsets in suitably chosen spaces of joinings.

Abstract:We study the categorical homology of Zappa-Szép products of small categories, which include all self-similar actions. We prove that the categorical homology coincides with the homology of a double complex, and so can be computed via a spectral sequence involving homology groups of the constituent categories. We give explicit formulae for the isomorphisms involved, and compute the homology of a class of examples that generalise odometers. We define the C*-algebras of self-similar groupoid actions on k-graphs twisted by 2-cocycles arising from this homology theory, and prove some fundamental results about their structure.

Abstract:For a $\mathbb{R}^{k}-$action generated by vector fields $X_{1},...,X_{k}$ we obtain an operator $-(X_{1}^{2}+...+X_{k}^{2})$, the orbitwise laplacian. In this paper, we study and classify $\mathbb{R}^{k}-$actions whose orbitwise laplacian is globally hypoelliptic (GH). In three different settings, we prove that any such action is given by a translation action on some compact nilmanifold, (i) when the space is a compact nilmanifold, (ii) when the first Betti number of the manifold is sufficiently large, (iii) when the codimension of the orbitfoliation of the action is $1$. As a consequence, we prove the Greenleaf-Wallach conjecture on all nilmanifolds. Along the way, we also calculate the cohomology of GH $\mathbb{R}^{k}-$actions, proving, in particular, that it is always finite dimensional.

We show that any such automorphism group is a direct limit of certain finite products of finite symmetric groups, which are parametrized by a certain deterministic finite automaton.

Computing equivalence classes of finite group actions on orientable surfaces: A dynamic survey

Abstract:This paper focuses on the classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. With each such action of a group $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ one can associate the fundamental group $\Gamma=\pi(\mathcal{O})$ of the quotient orbifold $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{S}_g/\mathrm{G}$, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by orbifold's signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group $\Gamma$ onto the group $\mathrm{G}$. Using computer algebra systems such as \textsc{Magma} or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus $g\geq 2$ becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on $\mathcal{S}_g$ with the corresponding signature. In this paper we derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus $g\leq 9$ distinguished up to the topological equivalence. A summary of the actions can be found in Appendix, the reader interested in more details is referred to the web page [22]. It is expected that we will be able to extend the list to higher genera, refreshed partial results are available on the web page. The following text is an extended version of the paper [23].
