Abstract:We show every isometric action is quasidiagonal in a strong sense. This shows that reduced crossed products by such actions are quasidiagonal or MF whenever the reduced algebra of the acting group is quasidiagonal or MF.

Non-free almost finite actions for locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ groups

Abstract:In this paper, we study almost finiteness and almost finiteness in measure of non-free actions. Let $\alpha:G\curvearrowright X$ be a minimal action of a locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group $G$ on the Cantor set $X$. We prove that under certain assumptions, the action $\alpha$ is almost finite in measure if and only if $\alpha$ is essentially free. As an application, we obtain that any minimal topologically free action of a virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group on an infinite compact metrizable space with the small boundary property is almost finite. This is the first general result, assuming only topological freeness, in this direction, and these lead to new results on uniform property $\Gamma$ and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for their crossed product $C^*$-algebras. Some concrete examples of minimal topological free (but non-free) subshifts are provided.

Abstract:We show that up to a null set, every infinite measure-preserving action of a locally compact Polish group can be turned into a continuous measure-preserving action on a locally compact Polish space where the underlying measure is Radon. We also investigate the distinction between spatial and boolean actions in the infinite measure-preserving setup. We finally obtain a streamlined proof of a recent result of Avraham-Re'em and Roy: Levy groups cannot admit nontrivial continous measure-preserving actions on Polish spaces when the measure is locally finite.

Quantitative Amenability for Actions of Finitely Generated Groups

Abstract:We generalize the notion of isoperimetric profiles of finitely generated groups to their actions by measuring the boundary of finite subgraphings of the orbit graphing. We prove that like the classical isoperimetric profiles for groups, decay of the isoperimetric profile for an essentially-free action is equivalent to amenability of the action in the sense of Zimmer.For measure-preserving actions, we relate the isoperimetric profiles of the actions and the group.

Geometrical finiteness for automorphism groups via cone conjecture

Abstract:This paper aims to establish the geometrical finiteness for the natural isometric actions of (birational) automorphism groups on the hyperbolic spaces for K3 surfaces, Enriques surfaces, Coble surfaces, and irreducible symplectic varieties. As an application, it can be seen that such groups are non-positively curved: ${\rm CAT(0)}$ and relatively hyperbolic. In the case of K3 surfaces, we additionally provide a dynamical characterization of the relative hyperbolicity, and the first counterexample to Mukai's conjecture concerning the virtual cohomological dimension of automorphism groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we study several finite approximation properties of topological full groups of group actions on the Cantor set such that free points are dense. Firstly, we establish that for such a distal action $\alpha$ of a countable discrete group $G$ on the Cantor set, the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. This result is obtained through a novel method that detects hyperfiniteness in certain sofic approximation graph sequences of finitely generated subgroups of $[[\alpha]]$. We also provide estimates for related Følner functions. Next, we obtain negative results on the amenability of topological full groups for actions with zero topological entropy by calculating the topological entropy of certain examples provided by Elek and Monod. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological full group $[[\alpha]]$ of a minimal topologically free residually finite action $\alpha$ on the Cantor set is locally embeddable in the class of finite groups (LEF). This generalizes a result previously obtained by Grigorchuk and Medynets in the case of minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. As an application, we show that topological full groups of certain Toeplitz subshifts on free groups are LEF and therefore sofic.

Abstract:We show that a free action G ↷ X is almost finite if its restriction to some infinite normal subgroup of G is almost finite. Consider the class of groups which contains all infinite groups of locally subexponential growth and is closed under taking direct limits and extensions on the right by any amenable group. It follows that all free actions of a group from this class on finite-dimensional spaces are almost finite and therefore that minimal such actions give rise to classifiable crossed products. In particular, that gives a much easier proof for the recent result of Kerr and the author on elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:For any $k$-group scheme of finite type $G$ acting rationally on a $k$-variety $X$, if the action is generically free then the dimension of $\mathrm{Lie}(G)$ is upper bounded by the dimension of the variety. We show that this is the only obstruction when $k$ is a perfect field and $G$ is infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable. We also give necessary conditions to have faithful rational actions of infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable group schemes on varieties.

Abstract:In this work we introduce partial and global actions of inverse categories on posets in two variants, fibred actions and actions by symmetries. We study in detail actions of an inverse category $\mathcal{C}$ on specific subposets of the poset of finite subsets of $\mathcal{C}$, the Bernoulli actions. We show that to each fibred action of an inverse category on a poset there corresponds another inverse category, the semidirect product associated to the action. The Bernoulli actions give rise to the Szendrei expansions of $\mathcal{C}$, which define a endofunctor of the category of inverse categories. We extend the concept of enlargement from inverse semigroup theory to, and we show that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their Cauchy completions are equivalent categories; in particular, some pairs corresponding to partial and global Bernoulli actions are enlargements. We conclude by studying convolution algebras of finite inverse categories and showing that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their convolution algebras are Morita equivalent. Furthermore, using Kan extensions we also analyze the infinite case.

Abstract:We show that the Lipschitz free space of a countable simplicial quasi-tree is isomorphic to $\ell^1$. As a consequence, every finitely generated group with Property (QT) of Bestvina--Bromberg--Fujiwara has a proper uniformly Lipschitz affine action on $\ell^1$ with quasi-isometrically embedded orbits. We also show that $3$-manifold groups admit proper uniformly Lipschitz affine actions on $\ell^1$.

Actions of higher rank groups on uniformly convex Banach spaces

Abstract:We prove that all isometric actions of higher rank simple Lie groups and their lattices on arbitrary uniformly convex Banach spaces have a fixed point. This vastly generalises a recent breakthrough of Oppenheim. Combined with earlier work of Lafforgue and of Liao on strong Banach property (T) for non-Archimedean higher rank simple groups, this confirms a long-standing conjecture of Bader, Furman, Gelander and Monod. As a consequence, we deduce that sequences of Cayley graphs of finite quotients of a higher rank lattice are super-expanders.

Abstract:We provide the first examples of finitely generated simple groups that are amenable (and infinite). This follows from a general existence result on invariant states for piecewise-translations of the integers. The states are obtained by constructing a suitable family of densities on the classical Bernoulli space.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact metric space and $G$ a finitely generated group. Suppose $\phi:G\rightarrow {\rm Homeo}(X)$ is a continuous action. We show that if $\phi$ is both distal and expansive, then $X$ must be finite. A counterexample is constructed to show the necessity of finite generation condition on $G$. This is also a supplement to a result due to Auslander-Glasner-Weiss which says that every distal action by a finitely generated group on a zero-dimensional compactum is equicontinuous.
Existentially closed measure-preserving actions of free groups

Abstract:This paper is motivated by the study of probability measure-preserving (pmp) actions of free groups using continuous model theory. Such an action is treated as a metric structure that consists of the measure algebra of the probability measure space expanded by a family of its automorphisms. We prove that the existentially closed pmp actions of a given free group form an elementary class, and therefore the theory of pmp $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions has a model companion. We show this model companion is stable and has quantifier elimination. We also prove that the action of $\mathbb{F}_k$ on its profinite completion with the Haar measure is metrically generic and therefore, as we show, it is existentially closed. We deduce our main result from a more general theorem, which gives a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a model companion for the theory of $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions on a separably categorical, stable metric structure.

Clopen type semigroups of actions on $0$-dimensional compact spaces

Abstract:We investigate some properties of the clopen type semigroup of an action of a countable group on a compact, $0$-dimensional, Hausdorff space X. We discuss some characterizations of dynamical comparison (most of which were already known in the metrizable case) in this setting; and prove that for a Cantor minimal action $\alpha$ of an amenable group the topological full group of $\alpha$ admits a dense, locally finite subgroup iff the corresponding clopen type semigroup is unperforated. We also discuss some properties of clopen type semigroups of the Stone-Čech compactifications and universal minimal flows of countable groups, and derive some consequences on generic properties in the space of minimal actions of a given countable group on the Cantor space.

Abstract:We generalise results about isometric group actions on metric spaces and their fundamental regions to the context of merely continuous group actions. In particular, we obtain results that yield the relative compactness of a fundamental region for a cocompact group action. As a consequence, we obtain a criterion for a cocompact cyclic group of semi-Riemannian homotheties to be inessential.

Abstract:We study the space of continuous $Z^d$-actions on the Cantor set, particularly questions on the existence and nature of actions whose isomorphism class is dense (Rohlin's property). Kechris and Rosendal showed that for $d=1$ there is an action on the Cantor set whose isomorphism class is residual. We prove in contrast that for $\geq 2$ every isomorphism class is meager; on the other hand, while generically an action has dense isomorphism class and the effective actions are dense, no effective action has dense isomorphism class. Thus for $d \geq 2$ conjugation on the space of actions is topologically transitive but one cannot construct a transitive point. Finally, we show that in the space of transitive and minimal actions the effective actions are nowhere dense, and in particular there are minimal actions that are not approximable by minimal SFTs.

Abstract:We introduce a natural pseudometric on the space of actions of $d$-generated groups, such that the zero classes are exactly the weak equivalence classes and the metric identification with respect to this pseudometric is compact. We analyze convergence in this space and prove that every class contains an action that properly satisfies every combinatorial type condition that it satisfies with arbitrarily small error. We also show that the class of every free non-amenable action contains an action that satisfies the measurable von Neumann problem. The results have analogues in the realm of unitary representations as well.
