Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:For any 3D steady gradient Ricci soliton with positive curvature, we prove that it must be isometric to the Bryant soliton if it is asymptotic to a ray. Otherwise, it is asymptotic to a sector and hence a flying wing. We show that all 3D flying wings are O(2)-symmetric. Therefore, all 3D steady gradient Ricci solitons are O(2)-symmetric.

Abstract:We find a family of 3d steady gradient Ricci solitons that are flying wings. This verifies a conjecture by Hamilton. For a 3d flying wing, we show that the scalar curvature does not vanish at infinity. The 3d flying wings are collapsed. For dimension $n\ge 4$, we find a family of $\mathbb{Z}_2\times O(n-1)$-symmetric but non-rotationally symmetric n-dimensional steady gradient solitons with positive curvature operator. We show that these solitons are non-collapsed.

Asymptotic convergence for a class of fully nonlinear inverse curvature flows in a cone

Abstract:For a given smooth convex cone in the Euclidean $(n+1)$-space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which is centered at the origin, we investigate the evolution of strictly mean convex hypersurfaces, which are star-shaped with respect to the center of the cone and which meet the cone perpendicularly, along an inverse curvature flow with the speed equal to $\left(f(r)H\right)^{-1}$, where $f$ is a positive function of the radial distance parameter $r$ and $H$ is the mean curvature of the evolving hypersurfaces. The evolution of those hypersurfaces inside the cone yields a fully nonlinear parabolic Neumann problem. Under suitable constraints on the first and the second derivatives of the radial function $f$, we can prove the long-time existence of this flow, and moreover the evolving hypersurfaces converge smoothly to a piece of the round sphere.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a gradient expanding Ricci soliton asymptotic to any given cone over the product of a round sphere and a Ricci flat manifold. In particular we obtain asymptotically conical expanding Ricci solitons with positive scalar curvature on More generally we construct continuous families of gradient expanding Ricci solitons on trivial vector bundles over products of Einstein manifolds with arbitrary Einstein constants.

Conical Kähler–Einstein Metrics Revisited

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the “interpolation–degeneration” strategy to study Kähler–Einstein metrics on a smooth Fano manifold with cone singularities along a smooth divisor that is proportional to the anti-canonical divisor. By “interpolation” we show the angles in (0, 2π] that admit a conical Kähler–Einstein metric form a connected interval, and by “degeneration” we determine the boundary of the interval in some important cases. As a first application, we show that there exists a Kähler–Einstein metric on ${\mathbb{P}^2}$ with cone singularity along a smooth conic (degree 2) curve if and only if the angle is in (π/2, 2π]. When the angle is 2π/3 this proves the existence of a Sasaki–Einstein metric on the link of a three dimensional A 2 singularity, and thus answers a question posed by Gauntlett–Martelli–Sparks–Yau. As a second application we prove a version of Donaldson’s conjecture about conical Kähler–Einstein metrics in the toric case using Song–Wang’s recent existence result of toric invariant conical Kähler–Einstein metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, by using new auxiliary functions, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, star-shaped hypersurfaces in Rn+1 with speed rαβσk1β, where σk is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, α, β are positive constants and r is the distance from points on the hypersurface to the origin. We obtain convergence results under some assumptions of k, α, β. When k≥2, 0<β≤1, α≥β+k, we prove that the k-convex solution to the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly to a sphere after normalization, in particular, we generalize Li-Sheng-Wang's result from uniformly convex to k-convex. Abstract:Let D be the exterior of a cone inside a ball, with its altitude angle at most π / 6 in R 3 , which touches the x 3 axis at the origin. For any initial value v 0 = v 0 , r e r + v 0 , θ e θ + v 0 , 3 e 3 in a C 2 ( D ‾ ) class, which has the usual even-odd-odd symmetry in the x 3 variable and has the partial smallness only in the swirl direction: | r v 0 , θ | ≤ 1 100 , the axially symmetric Navier-Stokes equations (ASNS) with Navier-Hodge-Lions slip boundary condition have a finite-energy solution that stays bounded for all time. In particular, no finite-time blowup of the fluid velocity occurs. Compared with standard smallness assumptions on the initial velocity, no size restriction is made on the components v 0 , r and v 0 , 3 . In a broad sense, this result appears to solve 2/3 of the regularity problem of ASNS in such domains in the class of solutions with the above symmetry. Equivalently, this result is connected to the general open question which asks that if an absolute smallness of one component of the initial velocity implies the global smoothness, see e.g. page 873 in Chemin et al. (2017) [6]. Our result seems to give a positive answer in a special setting. As a byproduct, we also construct an unbounded solution of the forced Navier Stokes equation in a special cusp domain that has finite energy. The forcing term, with the scaling factor of −1, is in the standard regularity class, and it can be generated by an electric current in a long and straight wire (i.e. Ampère force). This result confirms the intuition that if the channel of a fluid is very thin, arbitrarily high speed in the classical sense can be attained under a mildly singular, physically reasonable force.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a real hypersurface of a complex space form $M^n(c)$, $c\neq 0$. Suppose that the structure vector field $\xi$ of $M$ is an eigen vector field of the Ricci tensor $S$, $S\xi=\beta\xi$, $\beta$ being a function. We study on $M$, a gradient pseudo-Ricci soliton as an extended concept of Ricci soliton, closely related to pseudo-Einstein real hypersurfaces. We show that a $3$-dimensional ruled real hypersurface of $M^2(c), c<0$ admits a non-trivial gradient pseudo-Ricci soliton.

Abstract:The work establishes the unique solvability of a boundary value problem for a 3D linearized system of Navier–Stokes equations in a degenerate domain represented by a cone. The domain degenerates at the vertex of the cone at the initial moment of time, and, as a consequence of this fact, there are no initial conditions in the problem under consideration. First, the unique solvability of the initial-boundary value problem for the 3D linearized Navier–Stokes equations system in a truncated cone is established. Then, the original problem for the cone is approximated by a countable family of initial-boundary value problems in domains represented by truncated cones, which are constructed in a specially chosen manner. In the limit, the truncated cones will tend toward the original cone. The Faedo–Galerkin method is used to prove the unique solvability of initial-boundary value problems in each of the truncated cones. By carrying out the passage to the limit, we obtain the main result regarding the solvability of the boundary value problem in a cone.

A family of Kähler flying wing steady Ricci solitons

Abstract:In $1996$, H.-D. Cao constructed a $U(n)$-invariant steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and asked whether every steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton of positive curvature on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is necessarily $U(n)$-invariant (and hence unique up to scaling). Recently, Apostolov-Cifarelli answered this question in the negative for $n=2$. Here, we construct a family of $U(1)\times U(n-1)$-invariant, but not $U(n)$-invariant, complete steady gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons with strictly positive curvature operator on real $(1,\,1)$-forms (in particular, with strictly positive sectional curvature) on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ for $n\geq3$, thereby answering Cao's question in the negative for $n\geq3$. This family of steady Ricci solitons interpolates between Cao's $U(n)$-invariant steady Kähler-Ricci soliton and the product of the cigar soliton and Cao's $U(n-1)$-invariant steady Kähler-Ricci soliton. This provides the Kähler analog of the Riemannian flying wings construction of Lai. In the process of the proof, we also demonstrate that the almost diameter rigidity of $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric does not hold even if the curvature operator is bounded below by $2$ on real $(1,\,1)$-forms.

Degree theory for 4-dimensional asymptotically conical gradient expanding solitons

Abstract:We develop a new degree theory for 4-dimensional, asymptotically conical gradient expanding solitons. Our theory implies the existence of gradient expanding solitons that are asymptotic to any given cone over $S^3$ with non-negative scalar curvature. We also obtain a similar existence result for cones whose link is diffeomorphic to $S^3/\Gamma$ if we allow the expanding soliton to have orbifold singularities. Our theory reveals the existence of a new topological invariant, called the expander degree, applicable to a particular class of compact, smooth 4-orbifolds with boundary. This invariant is roughly equal to a signed count of all possible gradient expanding solitons that can be defined on the interior of the orbifold and are asymptotic to any fixed cone metric with non-negative scalar curvature. If the expander degree of an orbifold is non-zero, then gradient expanding solitons exist for any such cone metric. We show that the expander degree of the 4-disk $D^4$ and any orbifold of the form $D^4/\Gamma$ equals 1. Additionally, we demonstrate that the expander degree of certain orbifolds, including exotic 4-disks, vanishes. Our theory also sheds light on the relation between gradient and non-gradient expanding solitons with respect to their asymptotic model. More specifically, we show that among the set of asymptotically conical expanding solitons, the subset of those solitons that are gradient forms a union of connected components.

Unique Asymptotics of Steady Ricci Solitons with Symmetry

Abstract:In this paper we study 4d gradient steady Ricci solitons, which are weak $\kappa$-solutions, and admit O(3)-symmetry. Under a weak curvature decay condition, we find precise geometric asymptotics of such solitons, which are similar to those for 3d compact $\kappa$-solutions found in [ABDS22]. This is the first step towards the classification of 4d gradient steady Ricci solitons and more general ancient Ricci flows.

Abstract:Given an asymptotically conical, shrinking, gradient Ricci soliton, we show that there exists a Ricci flow solution on a closed manifold that forms a finite-time singularity modeled on the given soliton. No symmetry or Kahler assumptions on the soliton are required. The proof provides a precise asymptotic description of the singularity formation.

Self-shrinkers whose asymptotic cones fatten

Abstract:For each positive integer $g$ we use variational methods to construct a genus $g$ self-shrinker $\Sigma_g$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy less than $2$ and prismatic symmetry group $\mathbb{D}_{g+1}\times\mathbb{Z}_2$. For $g$ sufficiently large, the self-shrinker $\Sigma_g$ has two graphical asymptotically conical ends and the sequence $\Sigma_g$ converges on compact subsets to a plane with multiplicity two as $g\to\infty$. Angenent-Chopp-Ilmanen conjectured the existence of such self-shrinkers in 1995 based on numerical experiments. Using these surfaces as initial conditions for large $g$, we obtain examples of mean curvature flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth initial non-compact data that evolve non-uniquely after their first singular time.
