The Critical Beta-splitting Random Tree II: Overview and Open Problems

Abstract:In the critical beta-splitting model of a random $n$-leaf rooted tree, clades are recursively (from the root) split into sub-clades, and a clade of $m$ leaves is split into sub-clades containing $i$ and $m-i$ leaves with probabilities $\propto 1/(i(m-i))$. Study of structure theory and explicit quantitative aspects of the model is an active research topic, and this article provides an extensive overview what is currently known. For many results there are different proofs, probabilistic or analytic, so the model provides a testbed for a ``compare and contrast" discussion of techniques. We give some proofs that are not currently available elsewhere, and also give heuristics for some proven results and for some open problems. Our discussion is centered around three ``foundational" results. (i) There is a canonical embedding into a continuous-time model, that is a random tree $\mbox{CTCS}(n)$ on $n$ leaves with real-valued edge lengths, and this model turns out more convenient to study. The family $(\mbox{CTCS}(n), n \ge 2)$ is consistent under a ``delete random leaf and prune" operation. That leads to an explicit inductive construction of $(\mbox{CTCS}(n), n \ge 2)$ as $n$ increases, and then to a limit structure $\mbox{CTCS}(\infty)$ formalized via exchangeable partitions, in some ways analogous to the Brownian continuum random tree. (ii) There is a CLT for leaf heights, and the analytic proof can be extended to provide surprisingly precise analysis of other height-related aspects. (iii) There is an explicit description of the limit {\em fringe distribution} relative to a random leaf, whose graphical representation is essentially the format of the cladogram representation of biological phylogenies. Many open problems remain.

Abstract:This paper is a sequel of Imamura (2019) (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1711.01609" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1711.01609">arXiv:1711.01609</a>) where we set up a framework of nonstandard large-scale topology. In the present paper, we apply our framework to various topics in large-scale topology: spaces having with both small-scale and large-scale structures, large-scale structures on nonstandard extensions, size properties of subsets of coarse spaces, and coarse hyperspaces.

Abstract:The paper first covers several properties of the extension of the divisibility relation to a set ${}^*\hspace{-0.5mm}N$ of nonstandard integers. After that, a connection is established with the divisibility in the Stone-\v{C}ech compactification $\beta N$, obtaining an equivalent condition for divisibility of ultrafilters introduced by the author. Some earlier results are illuminated by nonstandard methods, and new results on ultrafilters on the higher levels of the divisibility hierarchy are obtained by means of limits.
An Operator Theoretic Approach to Birkhoff's Problem 111

Abstract:In 1946, Garrett Birkhoff proved that the $n\times n$ doubly stochastic matrices comprise the convex hull of the $n\times n$ permutation matrices, which in turn make up the extreme points of this polytope. He proposed his problem 111, which asks whether there exists a topology on infinite matrices for which this applies to the closed convex hull of the $\mathbb{N}\times\mathbb{N}$ permutation matrices. As Isbell showed in 1955, this equality is not achieved in the line-sum norm. In this paper, we use the domain of operator theory, and its many topologies, to improve on his negative result by showing that Birkhoff's problem is not solved in any of these topologies. In Kendall's 1960 paper on this problem, he gave an answer to the affirmative, as well as a topology for which closed convex hull comprises the doubly substochastic matrices. We also show that Kendall's secondary theorem also applies for all the locally convex Hausdorff topologies finer than than Kendall's (namely that of entry-wise convergence) which make the continuous dual of the matrix space no larger than the predual of the von Neumann algebra containing them. We then show that this is a theoretical upper limit topologies with this closure property. We also discuss the exposed points of this hull for these several topologies. Moreover, we show that, in these topologies, the closed affine hull of these permutation matrices comprise all operators with real-entry matrix coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduced the concept of $ r $-fuzzy soft $ \beta $-closed sets in fuzzy soft topological spaces based on the sense of Šostak and investigated some properties of them. Also, we defined the closure and interior operators with respect to the classes of $ r $-fuzzy soft $ \beta $-closed and $ r $-fuzzy soft $ \beta $-open sets and studied some of their properties. Moreover, the concept of $ r $-fuzzy soft $ \beta $-connected sets was introduced and characterized with the help of fuzzy soft $ \beta $-closure operators. Thereafter, some properties of a fuzzy soft $ \beta $-continuity were studied. Also, we introduced and studied the concepts of fuzzy soft almost (weakly) $ \beta $-continuous functions, which are weaker forms of a fuzzy soft $ \beta $-continuity. The relationships between these classes of functions were specified with the help of some illustrative examples. Finally, we explored new types of fuzzy soft functions called fuzzy soft $ \beta $-irresolute (strongly $ \beta $-irresolute, $ \beta $-irresolute open, $ \beta $-irresolute closed, and $ \beta $-irresolute homeomorphism) functions and discussed some properties of them. Also, we showed that fuzzy soft strongly $ \beta $-irresolute $ \Rightarrow $ fuzzy soft $ \beta $-irresolute $ \Rightarrow $ fuzzy soft $ \beta $-continuity, but the converse may not be true.

A second order approach to the Kato square root problem on open sets

Abstract:We give a proof for the Kato square root problem on suitable open sets and subject to pure Dirichlet boundary conditions. In contrast to earlier work, our proof uses only second-order techniques and is in the spirit of the proof given by Egert--Haller--Monniaux--Tolksdorf in the scope of the 27th international internet seminar for $\Omega = \mathbb{R}^n$. In contrast to the usual proofs based on the first-order framework by Axelsson--Keith--McIntosh, the proof becomes substantially shorter and technically less demanding.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of $e^*$-topological ring. This class appears as a generalized form of the class of $\beta$-topological rings. In addition, we have discussed the relation between the concept of $e^*$-topological ring and some other types of topological rings existing in the literature. Also, some fundamental results about $e^*$-topological rings are revealed. Furthermore, we give some counterexamples related to our results.

Abstract:We investigate closed copies of~$\mathbb{N}$ in powers of~$\mathbb{R}$ with respect to $C^*$- and $C$-embedding. We show that $\mathbb{R}^{\omega_1}$ contains closed copies of~$\mathbb{N}$ that are not $C^*$-embedded.

On topology expansion using ideals

Abstract:Topologies can be expanded with the help of ideals, using the local function, an operator resembling the closure of a set. The aim of this paper is to define the ideals which enable us to create this topology $\tau^{*}$ on $X$ simultaneously making a specific set $A\subseteq X$ open in $\tau^{*}$. We study certain properties of $\tau^{*}$, especially under the assumption that $A$ is a preopen set. Further, we reflect on the ideal topological space in which the ideal is generated by a chosen family of dense sets. Here we prove that the generated topology by this ideal is submaximal, but not maximal connected.

In the present extension we also want to cover critical processes, indecomposable and unstoppable. The first part of this series introduced controlled spaces, examining how they can model critical processes in various domains, from the change of state in a memory cell to the action of a thermostat or a siphon. Abstract:This article is a continuation of our investigations in the function space C ( X ) with respect to the topology of strong uniform convergence on in line of (Chandra et al. in Indag Math 31:43-63, 2020; Das et al. in Topol Appl 310:108005, 2022) using the idea of strong uniform convergence (Beer and Levi in J Math Anal Appl 350:568-589, 2009) on a bornology. First we focus on the notion of the tightness property of and some of its variations such as the supertightness, the Id-fan tightness and the T -tightness. Certain situations are discussed when C ( X ) is a k-space with respect to the topology . Next the notions of strong -open game and -open game on X are introduced and some of its consequences are investigated. Finally, we consider discretely selective property and related games. On several interactions between topological games related to discretely selective property, the Gruenhage game on and certain games on X are presented.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a very wide category of open sets in topological spaces, called $ \aleph $-open sets. We study the category of $ \aleph $-open sets that contains $ \beta $-open sets in addition to $ \beta^{\ast} $-open and $ e^{\ast} $-open sets. We present the essential properties of this class and disclose its relationships with many different classes of open sets with the help of concrete counterexamples. In addition, we introduce the $ \aleph $-interior and $ \aleph $-closure operators. Moreover, we study the concept of $ \aleph $-continuity of functions inspired by the classes of $ \aleph $-open and $ \aleph $-closed sets. Also, we discuss some kinds of separation axioms and some theorems related to the graph of functions.
