Abstract:We investigate closed copies of~$\mathbb{N}$ in powers of~$\mathbb{R}$ with respect to $C^*$- and $C$-embedding. We show that $\mathbb{R}^{\omega_1}$ contains closed copies of~$\mathbb{N}$ that are not $C^*$-embedded.

Abstract:This paper is inspired by the paper of Leonetti, Russo and Somaglia [\textit{Dense lineability and spaceability in certain subsets of $\ell_\infty$.} Bull. London Math. Soc., 55: 2283--2303 (2023)] and the lineability problems raised therein. It concerns the properties of $\ell_\infty$ subsets defined by cluster points of sequences. Using the fact that the set of cluster points of a sequence $x$ depends only on its equivalence class in $\ell_\infty/c_0$ and that the quotient space $\ell_\infty/c_0$ is isometrically isomorphic to $C(\beta\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N})$, we are able to translate lineability problems from $\ell_\infty$ to $C(\beta\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N})$. We prove that for a compact space $K$ with properties similar to those of $\beta\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N}$, the sets of continuous functions $f$ in $C(K)$ with $\vert\operatorname{rng}(f)\vert=\omega$ and those $f$ with $\vert\operatorname{rng}(f)\vert=\mathfrak c$ contain, up to zero function, an isometric copy of $c_0(\kappa)$ for uncountable cardinal $\kappa$. Specializing those results to some closed subspaces $K$ of $\beta\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N}$ we are able to generalize known results to their ideal versions.

Abstract:For a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ we investigate the partial order $\langle {\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}) ,\subset \rangle$, where ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}):=\{ f[X]: f\in \mathop{\rm Emb}\nolimits ({\mathbb X})\}$. Here we consider uncountable ordinals. Since $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is isomorphic to the direct product $\prod _{i=1}^n (\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta _i}))^{s_i}$, where $\alpha = \omega ^{\delta _n}s_n+\dots +\omega ^{\delta _1}s_1+ m$ is the Cantor normal form for $\alpha $, the analysis is reduced to the investigation of the posets of the form ${\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta })$. It turns out that, in ZFC, either the poset $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is $\sigma$-closed and completely embeds $P(\omega )/\mathop{\rm Fin}$ and, hence, preserves $\omega _1$ and forces $|{\mathfrak c}|=|{\mathfrak h}|$, or, otherwise, completely embeds the algebra $P(\lambda )/[\lambda ]^{<\lambda }$, for some regular $\omega <\lambda \leq \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta )$, and collapses $\omega _2$ to $\omega $. Regarding the Cantor normal form, the first case appears iff for each $i\leq n$ we have $\mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta _i)\leq \omega $, or $\delta _i = \theta _i + \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta _i )$, where $\mathop{\mathrm{Ord}}\nolimits \ni\theta _i \geq \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta _i ) >\mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\theta _i )=\omega $ and $\theta _i =\lim _{n\rightarrow \omega }\delta _n$, where $\mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta _n)=\mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta _i)$, for all $n\in \omega $.

Abstract:Let $\sum (X)$ be the collection of subalgebras of $C(X)$ containing $C^{*}(X)$, where $X$ is a Tychonoff space. For any $A(X)\in \sum(X)$ there is associated a subset $\upsilon_{A}(X)$ of $\beta X$ which is an $A$-analogue of the Hewitt real compactification $\upsilon X$ of $X$. For any $A(X)\in \sum(X)$, let $[A(X)]$ be the class of all $B(X)\in \sum(X)$ such that $\upsilon_{A}(X)=\upsilon_{B}(X)$. We have shown that for first countable non compact real compact space $X$, $[A(X)]$ contains at least $2^{c}$ many different subalgebras no two of which are isomorphic.

Abstract:In answer to a question on Mathoverflow we show that the Boolean algebra $\mathcal{P}(\omega)/\mathit{fin}$ contains a family $\{\mathcal{B}_X:X\subseteq\mathfrak{c}\}$ of subalgebras with the property that $X\subseteq Y$ implies $\mathcal{B}_Y$ is a subalgebra of $\mathcal{B}_X$ and if $X\not\subseteq Y$ then $\mathcal{B}_Y$ is not embeddable into~$\mathcal{B}_X$. The proof proceeds by Stone duality and the construction of a suitable family of separable zero-dimensional compact spaces.

Abstract:We investigate the set-theoretic properties of the lattice of projections in the Calkin algebra of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space in relation to those of the Boolean algebra $P(\omega)/{\rm fin}$, which is isomorphic to the sublattice of diagonal projections. In particular, we prove some basic consistency results about the possible cofinalities of well-ordered sequences of projections and the possible cardinalities of sets of mutually orthogonal projections that are analogous to well-known results about $P(\omega)/{\rm fin}$.

Abstract:For any pair $M,N$ of von Neumann algebras such that the algebraic tensor product $M\otimes N$ admits more than one $\mathrm{C}^*$-norm, the cardinal of the set of $\mathrm{C}^*$-norms is at least $ {2^{\aleph_0}}$. Moreover there is a family with cardinality $ {2^{\aleph_0}}$ of injective tensor product functors for $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras in Kirchberg's sense. Let $\IB=\prod_n M_{n}$. We also show that, for any non-nuclear von Neumann algebra $M\subset \IB(\ell_2)$, the set of $\mathrm{C}^*$-norms on $\IB \otimes M$ has cardinality equal to $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$.

Abstract:It has been studied by Curto et al. (SIAM J. on App. Alg. and Geom., 1(1) : 222 $\unicode{x2013}$ 238, 2017) that a neural code that has an open convex realization does not have any local obstruction relative to the neural code. Further, a neural code $ \mathcal{C} $ has no local obstructions if and only if it contains the set of mandatory codewords, $ \mathcal{C}_{\min}(\Delta),$ which depends only on the simplicial complex $\Delta=\Delta(\mathcal{C})$. Thus if $\mathcal{C} \not \supseteq \mathcal{C}_{\min}(\Delta)$, then $\mathcal{C}$ cannot be open convex. However, the problem of constructing $ \mathcal{C}_{\min}(\Delta) $ for any given code $ \mathcal{C} $ is undecidable. There is yet another way to capture the local obstructions via the homological mandatory set, $ \mathcal{M}_H(\Delta). $ The significance of $ \mathcal{M}_H(\Delta) $ for a given code $ \mathcal{C} $ is that $ \mathcal{M}_H(\Delta) \subseteq \mathcal{C}_{\min}(\Delta)$ and so $ \mathcal{C} $ will have local obstructions if $ \mathcal{C}\not\supseteq\mathcal{M}_H(\Delta). $ In this paper we study the affect on the sets $\mathcal{C}_{\min}(\Delta) $ and $\mathcal{M}_H(\Delta)$ under the action of various surjective elementary code maps. Further, we study the relationship between Stanley-Reisner rings of the simplicial complexes associated with neural codes of the elementary code maps. Moreover, using this relationship, we give an alternative proof to show that $ \mathcal{M}_H(\Delta) $ is preserved under the elementary code maps.

Examples of $CD(0,N)$ spaces with non-constant dimension

Abstract:In this work, we generalize the results obtained in (J. Geom. Anal., 32(6):Paper No.173, 32, 2022), presenting some examples of $CD(0,N)$ spaces having different dimensions in different regions, deducing in particular that the topological splitting may fail in $CD(0,N)$ spaces. We also observe that any reasonable non-branching condition may fail in $CD(0,N)$ spaces and that the existence of an optimal transport map, between two absolutely continuous marginals, is not guaranteed by the $CD(0,N)$ condition, without requiring a non-branching assumption. Moreover, we show that the strict $CD(0,N)$ condition is strictly stronger than the classical $CD(0,N)$ one and it is not stable with respect to the measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.

New examples of $2$-nondegenerate real hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^N$ with arbitrary nilpotent symbols

Abstract:We introduce a class of uniformly $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^N$, for $N>3$, having a rank $1$ Levi kernel. The class is first of all remarkable by the fact that for every $N>3$ it forms an {\em explicit} infinite-dimensional family of everywhere $2$-nondegenerate hypersurfaces. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such construction. Besides, the class an infinite-dimensional family of non-equivalent structures having a given constant nilpotent CR symbol for every such symbol. Using methods that are able to handle all cases with $N>5$ simultaneously, we solve the equivalence problem for the considered structures whose symbol is represented by a single Jordan block, classify their algebras of infinitesimal symmetries, and classify the locally homogeneous structures among them. We show that the remaining considered structures, which have symbols represented by a direct sum of Jordan blocks, can be constructed from the single block structures through simple linking and extension processes.

Effective powers of $ω$ over $Δ_2$ cohesive sets and infinite $Π_1$ sets without $Δ_2$ cohesive subsets

Abstract:A cohesive power of a computable structure is an effective ultrapower where a cohesive set acts as an ultrafilter. Let $\omega$, $\zeta$, and $\eta$ denote the respective order-types of the natural numbers, the integers, and the rationals. We study cohesive powers of computable copies of $\omega$ over $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets. We show that there is a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ such that, for every $\Delta_2$ cohesive set $C$, the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over $C$ has order-type $\omega + \eta$. This improves an earlier result of Dimitrov, Harizanov, Morozov, Shafer, A. Soskova, and Vatev by generalizing from $\Sigma_1$ cohesive sets to $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets and by computing a single copy of $\omega$ that has the desired cohesive power over all $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets. Furthermore, our result is optimal in the sense that $\Delta_2$ cannot be replaced by $\Pi_2$. More generally, we show that if $X \subseteq \mathbb{N} \setminus \{0\}$ is a Boolean combination of $\Sigma_2$ sets, thought of as a set of finite order-types, then there is a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ where the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over any $\Delta_2$ cohesive set has order-type $\omega + \sigma(X \cup \{\omega + \zeta\eta + \omega^*\})$. If $X$ is finite and non-empty, then there is also a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ where the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over any $\Delta_2$ cohesive set has order-type $\omega + \sigma(X)$. An unexpected byproduct of our work is a new method for constructing infinite $\Pi_1$ sets that do not have $\Delta_2$ cohesive subsets. In fact, we construct an infinite $\Pi_1$ set that does not have a $\Delta_2$ p-cohesive subset. Infinite $\Pi_1$ sets without $\Delta_2$ r-cohesive subsets generalize D. Martin's classic co-infinite c.e. set with no maximal superset and have appeared in the work of Lerman, Shore, and Soare.

Some observations on a clopen version of the Rothberger property

Abstract:In this paper, we proved that a clopen version $S_1(C_O, C_O)$ of the Rothberger property and Borel strong measure zeroness are independent. For a zero-dimensional metric space $(X, d)$, $X$ satisfies $S_1(C_O, C_O)$ if, and only if, $X$ has Borel strong measure zero with respect to each metric which has a same topology as d has. In a zero-dimensional space, the game $G_1(O,O)$ is equivalent to the game $G_1(C_O, C_O)$ and the point-open game is equivalent to the point-clopen game. Using reflections, we obtained that the game $G_1(C_O, C_O)$ and the point-clopen game are strategically and Markov dual. An example is given for a space on which the game $G_1(C_O, C_O)$ is undetermined.

Abstract:We provide a general recursive method for constructing transfer systems on finite lattices. Using this we calculate the number of homotopically distinct $N_\infty$ operads for dihedral groups $D_{p^n}$, $p > 2$ prime, and cyclic groups $C_{qp^n}$, $p \neq q$ prime. We then further display some of the beautiful combinatorics obtained by restricting to certain homotopically meaningful $N_\infty$ operads for these groups.

Abstract:For a polycyclic group $\Lambda$, $\text{rank} ( \Lambda )$ is defined as the number of $\mathbb{Z}$ factors in a polycyclic decomposition of $\Lambda$. For a finitely generated group $G$, $\text{rank} (G)$ is defined as the infimum of $ \text{rank} (\Lambda )$ among finite index polycyclic subgroups $\Lambda \leq G$. For a compact $\text{RCD} (K,N)$ space $(X,\mathsf{d}, \mathfrak{m})$ with $\text{diam} (X) \leq \varepsilon (K,N)$, the rank of $\pi_1(X)$ is at most $N$. In this note we show that in case of equality, $X$ is homeomorphic to an infranilmanifold, generalizing to the non-smooth setting a result by Kapovitch--Wilking. We also fill a gap in the proof that if $\pi_1(X) = \mathbb{Z}^N$, then $X$ is bi-Hölder homeomorphic to a flat torus (diffeomorphic in the smooth case).

Abstract:Let~$\mathcal{A}$ be an almost disjoint family of subsets of an infinite set~$\Gamma$, and denote by~$X_{\mathcal{A}}$ the closed subspace of~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ spanned by the indicator functions of intersections of finitely many sets in~$\mathcal{A}$. We show that if~$\mathcal{A}$ has cardinality greater than~$\Gamma$, then the closed subspace of~$X_{\mathcal{A}}$ spanned by the indicator functions of sets of the form $\bigcap_{j=1}^{n+1}A_j$, where $n\in\N$ and $A_1,\ldots,A_{n+1}\in\mathcal{A}$ are distinct, cannot be the kernel of any bounded operator \mbox{$X_{\mathcal{A}}\rightarrow \ell_{\infty}(\Gamma)$}. As a consequence, we deduce that the subspace \[ \bigl\{ x\in \ell_{\infty}(\Gamma) : \text{the set}\ \{\gamma \in \Gamma : \lvert x(\gamma)\rvert > \varepsilon \}\ \text{has cardinality smaller than}\ \Gamma\ \text{for every}\ \varepsilon>0\bigr\} \] of~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$ is not the kernel of any bounded operator on~$\ell_\infty(\Gamma)$; this generalises results of Kalton and of Pełczyński and Sudakov. The situation is more complex for the Banach space~$\ell_\infty^c(\Gamma)$ of countably supported, bounded functions defined on an uncountable set~$\Gamma$. We show that it is undecidable in \textsf{ZFC} whether every bounded operator on~$\ell_\infty^c(\omega_1)$ which vanishes on~$c_0(\omega_1)$ must vanish on a subspace of the form~$\ell_\infty^c(A)$ for some uncountable subset~$A$ of~$\omega_1$.
