Abstract:Nearrings can be regarded as a generalization of associative rings. In general, a nearring is a ring ( R, + , · ) in which the operation " + " is not necessarily Abelian and at least one distributive law holds. A nearring with identity is called local if the set of all invertible elements forms a subgroup of the additive group. In particular, every group is an additive group of some nearring but not of a nearring with identity. Finding non-Abelian finite p -groups that are additive groups of local nearrings is an open problem. We considered groups of nilpotency class 2 and 3 of order p 4 as additive groups of local nearrings in [https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.17567 and https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.14342]. It was shown that, for p > 3 , there exist local nearrings on one of four nonisomorphic groups of nilpotency class 3 of order p 4 . In the present paper, we continue our investigations of the groups of nilpotency class 3 of order p 4 . In particular, it is shown that another group of this class is an additive group of a local nearring and, hence, of a nearring with identity. Examples of local nearrings on this group are constructed in the GAP computer algebra system.

On the $p$-ranks of class groups of certain Galois extensions

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We show that the modular isomorphism problem has a positive answer for finite $p$-groups whose center has index $p^3$, which is a strong contrast to the analogous situation for $p = 2$.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two functions related to the arithmetic and geometric means of element orders of a finite group, showing that certain lower bounds on such functions strongly affect the group structure. In particular, for every prime p , we prove a sufficient condition for a finite group to be p -nilpotent, that is, a group whose elements of p′ -order form a normal subgroup. Moreover, we characterize finite cyclic groups with prescribed number of prime divisors.

Abstract:In this paper the authors consider four questions of primary interest for the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups: (i) Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture, (ii) the Humphreys-Verma Question, (iii) whether $\operatorname{St}_r \otimes L(\lambda)$ is a tilting module for $L(\lambda)$ an irrreducible representation of $p^{r}$-restricted highest weight, and (iv) whether $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}_{G_{1}}(L(\lambda),L(\mu))^{(-1)}$ is a tilting module where $L(\lambda)$ and $L(\mu)$ have $p$-restricted highest weight. The authors establish affirmative answers to each of these questions with a new uniform bound, namely $p\geq 2h-4$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number. Notably, this verifies these statements for infinitely many more cases. Later in the paper, questions (i)-(iv) are considered for rank two groups where there are counterexamples (for small primes) to these questions.

Abstract:Given any cube-free integer $\lambda>0$, we study the $3$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the central $L$-value of the elliptic curve $$X^3+Y^3=\lambda Z^3.$$ We give a lower bound in terms of the number of distinct prime factors of $\lambda$, which, in the case $3$ divides $\lambda$, also depends on the power of $3$ in $\lambda$. This extends an earlier result of the author in which it was assumed that $3$ is coprime to $\lambda$. We also study the $3$-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group for these curves and show that the lower bound is as expected from the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer, taking into account also the growth of the Tate-Shafarevich group.

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Abstract:In 2003, Héthelyi and Külshammer proposed that if $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is a prime dividing the group order, then $k(G)\geq 2\sqrt{p-1}$, and they proved this conjecture for solvable $G$ and showed that it is sharp for those primes $p$ for which $\sqrt{p-1}$ is an integer. This initiated a flurry of activity, leading to many generalizations and variations of the result; in particular, today the conjecture is known to be true for all finite groups. In this note, we put forward a natural new and stronger conjecture, which is sharp for all primes $p$, and we prove it for solvable groups, and when $p$ is large, also for arbitrary groups.

Abstract:This is one of a series of papers which aims towards a classification of imprimitive affine groups of rank $3$. In this paper, a complete classification is given of such groups of characteristic $p$ such that the point stabilizer is not $p$-local, which shows that such groups are very rare, namely, the two non-isomorphic groups of the form $2^4{:}\mathrm{GL}_3(2)$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup are the only examples.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime number. We compute the rings of invariants of the elementary abelian $p$-group $(\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)^r$ for $3$-dimensional generic representations. Furthermore we show that these rings of invariants are complete intersections rings with embedding dimension $\lceil r/2\rceil +3$. This proves a conjecture of Campbell, Shank and Wehlau in [CSW], which they proved for $r=3$, and later Pierron and Shank proved it for $r=4$.

Abstract:For most (and possibly all) non-associative finite simple Moufang loops, three generators of order 3 can be chosen so that each two of them generate a group isomorphic to $(3, 3 | 3, p)$. The subgroup structure of $(3, 3 | 3, p)$ depends on the solvability of a certain quadratic congruence, and it is described here in terms of generators.

Abstract:Consider a finite group $G$ of order $n$ with a prime divisor $p$. In this article, we establish, among other results, that if the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is neither cyclic nor generalized quaternion, then there exists a bijection $f$ from $G$ onto the abelian group $C_{\frac{n}{p}}\times C_p$ such that for every element $x$ in $G$, the order of $x$ divides the order of $f(x)$. This resolves Question 1.5 posed in [15]. As application of our results, we show that the group with the third largest value of the sum of element orders in the set of all finite groups of order $n$ is a solvable $p$-nilpotent group where $p$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$ such that the Sylow $p$-subgroups are not cyclic.

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

Abstract:We classify the upper ramification breaks of totally ramified nonabelian extensions of degree $p^3$ over a local field of characteristic $p>0$. We find that nonintegral upper ramification breaks can occur for each nonabelian Galois group of order $p^3$, except the dihedral group of order $8$.
