Abstract:We classify the upper ramification breaks of totally ramified nonabelian extensions of degree $p^3$ over a local field of characteristic $p>0$. We find that nonintegral upper ramification breaks can occur for each nonabelian Galois group of order $p^3$, except the dihedral group of order $8$.

Abstract:We examine the ramification groups of finite Galois extensions over complete discrete valuation fields of equal characteristic $p>0$. Brylinski (1983) calculated the ramification groups in the case where the Galois groups are abelian. We extend the results of Brylinski to some non-abelian cases where the Galois groups are of order $\leq p^{p+1}$ and of maximal nilpotency class.

Abstract:A theorem of Paul Roberts states that the integral closure of a regular local ring in a generically abelian extension is Cohen-Macaulay, provided the characteristic of the residue field does not divide the order of the Galois group. An example of Koh shows the conclusion is false in the modular case. After a modification to the statement concerning ramification over $p$ in codimension one, we give an extension of Roberts's theorem to the modular case for unramified regular local rings in mixed characteristic when the $p$-torsion of the Galois group is annihilated by $p$.

Abstract:The refined Swan conductor is defined by K.\ Kato \cite{KK2}, and generalized by T.\ Saito \cite{wild}. In this part, we consider some smooth $l$-adic étale sheaves of rank $p$ such that we can be define the $rsw$ following T.\ Saito, on some smooth dense open subscheme $U$ of a smooth separated scheme X of finite type over a perfect fields $\kappa$ of characteristic $p>0$. We give an explicit expression of $rsw(\mathcal{F})$ in some situation. As a consequence, we show that it is integral.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal K$ be a field of formal Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field of characteristic $p$. For $M\ge 1$, let $\mathcal G_{<p,M}$ be the maximal quotient of the Galois group of $\mathcal K$ of period $p^M$ and nilpotent class $<p$ and $\{\mathcal G_{<p,M}^{(v)}\}_{v\geqslant 0}$ -- the ramification subgroups in upper numbering. Let $\mathcal G_{<p,M}=G(\mathcal L)$ be the identification of nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory: here $G(\mathcal L)$ is the group obtained from a suitable profinite Lie $\mathbb{Z}/p^M$-algebra $\mathcal L$ via the Campbell-Hausdorff composition law. We develop new techniques to obtain a ``geometrical'' construction of the ideals $\mathcal L^{(v)}$ such that $G(\mathcal L^{(v)})=\mathcal G_{<p,M}^{(v)}$. Given $v_0\geqslant 1$, we construct a decreasing central filtration $\mathcal L(w)$, $1\leqslant w\leqslant p$, on $\mathcal L$, an epimorphism of Lie $\mathbb{Z}/p^M$-algebras $\bar{\mathcal V}:\bar{\mathcal L}^{†}\to \bar{\mathcal L}:=\mathcal L/\mathcal L(p)$, and a unipotent action $\Omega $ of $\mathbb{Z} /p^M$ on $\bar{\mathcal L}^{†}$, which induces the identity action on $\bar{\mathcal L}$. Suppose $d\Omega =B^{†}$, where $B^{†}\in\operatorname{Diff}\bar{\mathcal L}^{†}$, and $\bar{\mathcal L}^{†[v_0]}$ is the ideal of $\bar{\mathcal L}^{†}$ generated by the elements of $B^{†}(\bar{\mathcal L}^{†})$. Our main result states that the ramification ideal $\mathcal L^{(v_0)}$ appears as the preimage of the ideal in $\bar{\mathcal L}$ generated by $\bar{\mathcal V}B^{†}(\bar{\mathcal L}^{†[v_0]})$. In the last section we apply this to the explicit construction of generators of $\bar{\mathcal L}^{(v_0)}$. The paper justifies a geometrical origin of ramification subgroups of $\Gamma _K$ and can be used for further developing of non-abelian local class field theory.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and let $\mathbb{Q}_p$ be the field of $p$-adic numbers. It is known that the finite extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of a given degree are finite up to isomorphism. Given a cubic field extension $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ generated by the root of an irreducible polynomial $h$, we present a practical (closed-form) method to determine the isomorphism class in which $L$ lives, based on the coefficients of $h$. We discuss the subtleties of the wildly ramified case, when the degree of the extension coincides with $p$, the characteristic of the residue field. We also present a method for tamely ramified extensions of arbitrary prime degree.

Abstract:We study the ramification of fierce cyclic Galois extensions of a local field $K$ of characteristic zero with a one-dimensional residue field of characteristic $p>0$. Using Kato's theory of the refined Swan conductor, we associate to such an extension a ramification datum, consisting of a sequence of pairs $(\delta_i,\omega_i)$, where $\delta_i$ is a positive rational number and $\omega_i$ a differential form on the residue field of $K$. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions on such sequences to occur as a ramification datum of a fierce cyclic extension of $K$.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. Let $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ be irreducible Arthur type representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ respectively. We study Ext branching laws when $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ are products of discrete series representations and their Aubert-Zelevinsky duals. We obtain an Ext analogue of the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture in this case.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ and $F$ be a non-archimedean local field with residue field a proper finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We construct smooth absolutely irreducible non-admissible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ defined over the residue field of $F$ extending the earlier results of the authors for $F$ unramified over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. This construction uses the theory of diagrams of Breuil and Paskunas. By parabolic induction, we obtain smooth absolutely irreducible non-admissible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ for $n>2$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number. Mazur proved that a geometrically maximal unramified abelian covering of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ is given by the Shimura covering $X_2(p) \to X_0(p)$, that is, a unique subcovering of $X_1(p) \to X_0(p)$ of degree $N_p := (p-1)/\gcd(p-1, 12)$. In this short paper, we show that a geometrically maximal abelian covering $X_2'(p) \to X_0(p)$ of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ unramified outside cusps is cyclic of degree $2N_p$. The main ingredient for the construction of $X_2'(p)$ is the generalized Dedelind eta functions.

Abstract:Recently, much work has been done to investigate Galois module structure of local field extensions, particularly through the use of Galois scaffolds. Given a totally ramified $p$-extension of local fields $L/K$, a Galois Scaffold gives us a $K$-basis for $K[G]$ whose effect on the valuation of elements of $L$ is easy to determine. In 2013, N.P. Byott and G.G. Elder gave sufficient conditions for the existence of Galois scaffolds for cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $p$. We take their work and adapt it to cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $0$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a local field of characteristic $p>0$ with perfect residue field and let $G$ be a finite $p$-group. In this paper we use Saltman's construction of a generic $G$-extension of rings of characteristic $p$ to construct totally ramified $G$-extensions $L/K$ that have Galois scaffolds. We specialize this construction to produce $G$-extensions $L/K$ such that the ring of integers $O_L$ is free of rank 1 over its associated order $A_0$, and extensions such that $A_0$ is a Hopf order in the group ring $K[G]$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak{p}}$ acting on $(\text{mod}\,p^{m})$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of Calegari and Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight $\mathbf{1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]=2$ . Some partial and some conjectural results are obtained when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]>2$ .

Abstract:In this paper, we first review the $\\T_p$-groups in the abelian $p$-ramification theory of general number fields.We also review a general setting of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic. Then we propose various new Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for distributions of$\\T_p$-groups of quadratic fields, which in particular explains the speculation of Shanks et al. (1999) on the distributions of zeros of $2$-adic $L$-functions and also reveals the distribution of fundamental units in certain real quadratic fields. Theoretical and numerical evidence of our conjectures is also presented.
Mod-$p$ Galois representations not arising from abelian varieties

Abstract:It is known that any Galois representation $\rho : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with determinant equal to the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character, arises from the $p$-torsion of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, if and only if $p \leq 5$. In dimension $g = 2$, when $p \le 3$, it is again known that any Galois representation valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character arises from an abelian surface. In this paper, we study this question for all primes $p$ and dimensions $g \ge 2$. When $g \ge 2$ and $(g,p) \neq (2,2)$, $(2,3)$, $(3,2)$, we prove the existence of a Galois representation over $\mathbb{Q}$ valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(2g,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character, that cannot arise as the $p$-torsion representation of any $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

Abstract:Let $p\geq 7$ be a prime and $n>1$ be a natural number. We show that there exist infinitely many Galois representations $\varrho:Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow GL_{n}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ which are unramified outside $\{p, \infty\}$ with large image. More precisely, the Galois representations constructed have image containing the kernel of the mod-$p^t$ reduction map $SL_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)\rightarrow SL_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^t\mathbb{Z})$, where $t:=8(n^2-n)\left(3+\lfloor log_p(2^n+1)\rfloor\right)+8$. The results are proven via a purely Galois theoretic lifting construction. When $p\equiv 1\mod{4}$, our results are conditional since in this case, we assume a very weak version of Vandiver's conjecture.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an absolutely unramified $p$-adic field. We establish a ramification bound, depending only on the given prime $p$ and an integer $i$, for mod $p$ Galois representations associated with Wach modules of height at most $i$. Using an instance of $q$-crystalline cohomology (in its prismatic form), we thus obtain improved bounds on the ramification of $\mathrm{H}^{i}_{et}(X_{\mathbb{C}_K}, \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ for a smooth proper $p$-adic formal scheme $X$ over $\mathcal{O}_K$, for arbitrarily large degree $i$.

Application of the notion of $Φ$-object to the study of p-class groups and p-ramified torsion groups of abelian extensions

Abstract:We revisit, in an elementary way, the classical statement of various ``Main Conjectures'' for $p$-class groups $\mathcal{H}_K$ and $p$-ramified torsion groups $\mathcal{T}_K$ of abelian fields $K$, in the non semi-simple case $p \mid [K : \mathbb{Q}]$. The classical ``algebraic'' definition of the $p$-adic isotopic components, $\mathcal{H}^{\rm alg}{K,\varphi}$, used in the literature, is inappropriate with respect to analytical formulas. For that reason we have introduced, in the 1970's, an ``arithmetic'' definition, $\mathcal{H}^{\rm ar}{K,\varphi}$, in perfect correspondence with all analytical formulas and giving a natural ``Main Conjecture'', still unproved for real fields in the non semi-simple case. The two notions coincide for relative class groups $\mathcal{H}_K^-$ and groups $\mathcal{T}_K$ since, in $p$-extensions, transfer maps are injective for these groups but not necessarily for real class groups. Numerical evidence of the gap between the two notions is given (Examples A.2.2, A.2.3) and PARI calculations corroborate that the true Real Main Conjecture for $K$ writes on the form $\# \mathcal{H}^{\rm ar}_{K,\varphi} = \# (\mathcal{E}_K / \hat{\mathcal{E}}_K \, \mathcal{F}_{\!K})_{\varphi}$, in terms of units $\mathcal{E}_K$, $\hat{\mathcal{E}}_K$ (units of the strict subfields) and $\mathcal{F}_K$ (Leopoldt's cyclotomic units). A recent approach, conjecturing the capitulation of $\mathcal{H}_K$ in some auxiliary cyclotomic extensions $K(\mu_\ell^{})$, proves the difficult real case.
