Abstract:Let $p\geq 7$ be a prime and $n>1$ be a natural number. We show that there exist infinitely many Galois representations $\varrho:Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow GL_{n}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ which are unramified outside $\{p, \infty\}$ with large image. More precisely, the Galois representations constructed have image containing the kernel of the mod-$p^t$ reduction map $SL_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)\rightarrow SL_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^t\mathbb{Z})$, where $t:=8(n^2-n)\left(3+\lfloor log_p(2^n+1)\rfloor\right)+8$. The results are proven via a purely Galois theoretic lifting construction. When $p\equiv 1\mod{4}$, our results are conditional since in this case, we assume a very weak version of Vandiver's conjecture.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct Galois representations with large images under specific conditions. Specifically, the author Anwesh Ray tries to prove that for any prime number \( p \geq 7 \) and natural number \( n > 1 \), there exist infinitely many Galois representations \( \rho: \text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \to \text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \), which are unramified at all finite primes except \( p \) and the point at infinity, and whose images contain an open subgroup of \( \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \).
More precisely, the images of these constructed Galois representations contain the kernel of the modulo \( p^t \) reduction map \( \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \to \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^t\mathbb{Z}) \), where \( t = 8(n^2 - n)(3 + \lfloor \log_p(2n + 1) \rfloor) + 8 \). When \( p \equiv 1 \mod 4 \), the result is conditional because in this case, a very weak version of the Vandiver conjecture is assumed.
### Main contributions of the paper
1. **Constructing large - image Galois representations with special ramification properties**: The author constructs these representations by pure Galois - theoretic methods, rather than relying on automorphic forms or motives in algebraic geometry.
2. **Solving the inverse Galois problem under specific conditions**: The results of the paper partially answer the question of whether there exist Galois representations with large images, and can control at which primes these representations may be ramified.
3. **Extending existing results**: The results of the paper extend the work of Greenberg and others, especially in the case of irregular primes.
### Main conclusions
The main conclusions of the paper are:
- For any prime number \( p \geq 7 \) and natural number \( n > 1 \), there exist infinitely many Galois representations \( \rho: \text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \to \text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \), which are unramified at all finite primes except \( p \) and the point at infinity, and whose images contain an open subgroup of \( \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \).
- When \( p \equiv 1 \mod 4 \), a very weak version of the Vandiver conjecture is assumed.
### Method overview
The method of the paper is based on the step - by - step lifting of specific residual representations. The specific steps are as follows:
1. **Selecting appropriate residual representations**: Select a diagonalizable residual representation \( \bar{\rho}: G_{\{p\}} \to \text{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_p) \).
2. **Step - by - step lifting**: Through the step - by - step lifting process, lift the residual representation to a representation of characteristic zero.
3. **Constructing appropriate cohomology classes**: Use cohomology classes to twist the lifted representation so that its image is large enough.
4. **Verifying the size of the image**: Through a series of technical means, verify that the image of the lifted representation indeed contains an open subgroup of \( \text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p) \).
These methods and results are of great significance in number theory, especially in the study of high - dimensional motives and Galois representations.
