Abstract:A group-word w is called concise if the verbal subgroup w ( G ) is finite whenever w takes only finitely many values in a group G . It is known that there are words that are not concise. In particular, Olshanskii gave an example of such a word, which we denote by . The problem whether every word is concise in the class of residually finite groups remains wide open. In this note, we observe that is concise in residually finite groups. Moreover, we show that is strongly concise in profinite groups, that is, is finite whenever G is a profinite group in which takes less than values.

Abstract:Let $w=w(x_1,\ldots,x_r)$ be a lower central word or a derived word. We show that the word $w(u_1,\ldots,u_r)$ is concise whenever $u_1,\ldots,u_r$ are non-commutator words in disjoint sets of variables, thus proving a generalized version of a conjecture of Azevedo and Shumyatsky. This applies in particular to words of the form $w(x_1^{n_1},\ldots,x_r^{n_r})$, where the $n_i$ are non-zero integers. Our approach is via the study of values of $w$ on normal subgroups, and in this setting we obtain the following result: if $N_1,\ldots,N_r$ are normal subgroups of a group $G$ and the set of all values $w(g_1,\ldots,g_r)$ with $g_i\in N_i$ is finite then also the subgroup generated by these values, i.e. $w(N_1,\ldots,N_r)$, is finite.

Abstract:A group-word $w$ is concise in a class of groups $\mathcal X$ if and only if the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is finite whenever $w$ takes only finitely many values in a group $G\in \mathcal X$. It is a long-standing open problem whether every word is concise in residually finite groups. In this paper we observe that the conciseness of a word $w$ in residually finite groups is equivalent to that in the class of virtually pro-$p$ groups. This is used to show that if $q,n$ are positive integers and $w$ is a multilinear commutator word, then the words $w^q$ and $[w^q,_{n} y]$ are concise in residually finite groups. Earlier this was known only in the case where $q$ is a prime power. In the course of the proof we establish that certain classes of groups satisfying the law $w^q\equiv1$, or $[\delta_k^q,{}_n\, y]\equiv1$, are varieties.

Abstract:A group-word $w$ is called concise if the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is finite whenever $w$ takes only finitely many values in a group $G$. It is known that there are words that are not concise. The problem whether every word is concise in the class of profinite groups remains wide open. Moreover, there is a conjecture that every word $w$ is strongly concise in profinite groups, that is, $w(G)$ is finite whenever $G$ is a profinite group in which $w$ takes less than $2^{\aleph_0}$ values. In this paper we show that if the word $w$ takes less than $2^{\aleph_0}$ values in a profinite group $G$ then $w(w(G))$ is finite.

Abstract:We consider the large class G of locally convex spaces that includes, among others, the classes of (DF)-spaces and (LF)-spaces. For a space E in class G we have characterized that a subspace Y of (E,σ(E,E′)), endowed with the induced topology, is analytic if and only if Y has a σ(E,E′)-compact resolution and is contained in a σ(E,E′)-separable subset of E. This result is applied to reprove a known important result (due to Cascales and Orihuela) about weak metrizability of weakly compact sets in spaces of class G. The mentioned characterization follows from the following analogous result: The space C(X) of continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular Hausdorff space X endowed with a topology ξ stronger or equal than the pointwise topology τp of C(X) is analytic iff (C(X),ξ) is separable and is covered by a compact resolution.

Compactifications of pseudofinite and pseudo-amenable groups

Abstract:We first give simplified and corrected accounts of some results in \cite{PiRCP} on compactifications of pseudofinite groups. For instance, we use a classical theorem of Turing \cite{Turing} to give a simplified proof that any definable compactification of a pseudofinite group has an abelian connected component. We then discuss the relationship between Turing's work, the Jordan-Schur Theorem, and a (relatively) more recent result of Kazhdan \cite{Kazh} on approximate homomorphisms, and we use this to widen our scope from finite groups to amenable groups. In particular, we develop a suitable continuous logic framework for dealing with definable homomorphisms from pseudo-amenable groups to compact Lie groups. Together with the stabilizer theorems of \cite{HruAG,MOS}, we obtain a uniform (but non-quantitative) analogue of Bogolyubov's Lemma for sets of positive measure in discrete amenable groups. We conclude with brief remarks on the case of amenable topological groups.

Pragmatic finiteness properties of locally compact groups

Abstract:We compare finiteness properties of locally compact groups that generalize the properties of being compactly generated and of being compactly presented. Three such families of properties have been proposed: Abels--Tiemeyer's type $C_n$, coarse $(n-1)$-connectedness, and Castellano--Corob-Cook's type $F_n$. The first was defined for locally compact groups, the second can be defined for general topological groups, while the third was defined only for tdlc groups. We prove that all three families lead to the same notion for locally compact groups. This justifies working with these properties despite the fact that it is still unclear in which sense they describe finiteness properties of free classifying spaces for locally compact groups. Various parts of the arguments are well-known to various experts. By putting them together we hope to clarify the literature.

Abstract:In this paper we consider convex co-compact subgroups of the projective linear group. We prove that such a group is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two if and only if each open face in the ideal boundary has dimension at most one. We also introduce the "coarse Hilbert dimension" of a subset of a convex set and use it to characterize when a naive convex co-compact subgroup is word hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two.

Sharpness of proper and cocompact actions on reductive homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a noncompact connected real reductive linear Lie group, then any discrete subgroup of $G$ acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on some homogeneous space $G/H$ of $G$ is quasi-isometrically embedded and sharp for $G/H$, i.e. satisfies a strong, quantitative form of proper discontinuity. For noncompact reductive $H$, this was known as the Sharpness Conjecture, with applications to spectral analysis on pseudo-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1209.4075" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1209.4075">arXiv:1209.4075</a>. For $G/H$ rational of real corank one, we use sharpness to fully characterize properly discontinuous and cocompact actions on $G/H$ in terms of Anosov representations. This enables us to show that in real corank one, acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on $G/H$ is an open property, and also to prove that a number of homogeneous spaces do not admit compact quotients, such as $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{K})/\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{K})$ for $n>1$ and $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{C}$, or the quaternions.

Abstract:We show that for algebraic groups over local fields of characteristic zero, the following are equivalent: Every homomorphism has a closed image, every unitary representation decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional and mixing representations, and that the matrix coefficients are dense within the algebra of weakly almost periodic functions over the group. In our proof, we employ methods from semi-group theory. We establish that algebraic groups are \emph{compactification-centric}, meaning $sG = Gs$ for any element $s$ in the weakly almost periodic compactification of the group $G$.

Abstract:We show that for many right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, all cocompact cubulations coarsely look the same: they induce the same coarse median structure on the group. These are the first examples of non-hyperbolic groups with this property. For all graph products of finite groups and for Coxeter groups with no irreducible affine parabolic subgroups of rank $\geq 3$, we show that all automorphism preserve the coarse median structure induced, respectively, by the Davis complex and the Niblo-Reeves cubulation. As a consequence, automorphisms of these groups have nice fixed subgroups and satisfy Nielsen realisation.

Abstract:The result of J. R. Kline and R. L. Moore (1919) says that a compact subset of the plane homeomorphic to a subset of the reals lies on the arc. Motivated by this result, we give a purely topological characterisation of compact sets of the reals. This allows us to reduce investigations of Cantorvals to properties of countable linear orders and to show, applying the Mazurkiewicz–Sierpiński Theorem (1920), that there exist continuum many non-homeomorphic L -Cantorvals.

Abstract:We provide a new condition for an absolutely almost simple algebraic group to have good reduction with respect to a discrete valuation of the base field which is formulated in terms of the existence of maximal tori with special properties. This characterization, in particular, shows that the Finiteness Conjecture for forms of an absolutely almost simple algebraic group over a finitely generated field that have good reduction at a divisorial set of places of the field would imply the finiteness of the genus of the group at hand. It also leads to a new phenomenon that we refer to as "killing the genus by a purely transcendental extension." Yet another application deals with the investigation of "eigenvalue rigidity" of Zariski-dense subgroups, which in turn is related to the analysis of length-commensurable Riemann surfaces and general locally symmetric spaces. Finally, we analyze the Finiteness Conjecture and the genus problem for simple algebraic groups of type $\textsf{F}_4$.
