Abstract:We prove that one-relator groups with negative immersions are hyperbolic and virtually special; this resolves a recent conjecture of Louder and Wilton. As a consequence, one-relator groups with negative immersions are residually finite, linear and have isomorphism problem decidable among one-relator groups. Using the fact that parafree one-relator groups have negative immersions, we answer a question of Baumslag's from 1986. The main new tool we develop is a refinement of the classic Magnus--Moldavanskii hierarchy for one-relator groups. We introduce the notions of Z-stable HNN-extensions and Z-stable hierarchies. We then show that a one-relator group is hyperbolic and has a quasi-convex one-relator hierarchy if and only if it does not contain a Baumslag--Solitar subgroup and has a Z-stable one-relator hierarchy.

Subgroups of word hyperbolic groups in dimension 2 over arbitrary rings

Abstract:In 1996, Gersten proved that finitely presented subgroups of a word hyperbolic group of integral cohomological dimension 2 are hyperbolic. We use isoperimetric inequalities over arbitrary rings to extend this result to any ring. In particular, we study the discrete isoperimetric function and show that its linearity is equivalent to hyperbolicity, which is also equivalent to it being subquadratic. We further use these ideas to obtain conditions for subgroups of higher rank hyperbolic groups to be again higher rank hyperbolic of the same rank. The appendix discusses the equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities and coning inequalities in the simplicial setting and the general setting, leading to combinatorial definitions of higher rank hyperbolicity in the setting of simplicial complexes and allowing us to give elementary definitions of higher rank hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:A group-word $w$ is concise in a class of groups $\mathcal X$ if and only if the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is finite whenever $w$ takes only finitely many values in a group $G\in \mathcal X$. It is a long-standing open problem whether every word is concise in residually finite groups. In this paper we observe that the conciseness of a word $w$ in residually finite groups is equivalent to that in the class of virtually pro-$p$ groups. This is used to show that if $q,n$ are positive integers and $w$ is a multilinear commutator word, then the words $w^q$ and $[w^q,_{n} y]$ are concise in residually finite groups. Earlier this was known only in the case where $q$ is a prime power. In the course of the proof we establish that certain classes of groups satisfying the law $w^q\equiv1$, or $[\delta_k^q,{}_n\, y]\equiv1$, are varieties.

Abstract:The 1973 Boone-Higman conjecture predicts that every finitely generated group with solvable word problem embeds in a finitely presented simple group. In this paper, we show that hyperbolic groups satisfy this conjecture, that is, each hyperbolic group embeds in some finitely presented simple group. This shows that the conjecture holds in the "generic" case for finitely presented groups. Our key tool is a new family of groups, which we call "rational similarity groups (RSGs)", that is interesting in its own right. We prove that every hyperbolic group embeds in a full, contracting RSG, and every full, contracting RSG embeds in a finitely presented simple group, thus establishing the result. Another consequence of our work is that all contracting self-similar groups satisfy the Boone-Higman conjecture.

Abstract:Given an infinite linear group with a finite set of generators, we show that the shortest word length of an element of infinite order has an upper bound that depends only on the number of generators and the degree. This provides a quantification of the Burnside problem for linear groups. In degree two, an explicit bound is computed using an exceptional connection to reflection groups.

Abstract:A group-word $w$ is called concise if the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is finite whenever $w$ takes only finitely many values in a group $G$. It is known that there are words that are not concise. The problem whether every word is concise in the class of profinite groups remains wide open. Moreover, there is a conjecture that every word $w$ is strongly concise in profinite groups, that is, $w(G)$ is finite whenever $G$ is a profinite group in which $w$ takes less than $2^{\aleph_0}$ values. In this paper we show that if the word $w$ takes less than $2^{\aleph_0}$ values in a profinite group $G$ then $w(w(G))$ is finite.

Long relators in groups generated by two parabolic elements

Abstract:We find a family of groups generated by a pair of parabolic elements in which every relator must admit a long subword of a specific form. In particular, this collection contains groups in which the number of syllables of any relator is arbitrarily large. This suggests that the existing methods for finding non-free groups with rational parabolic generators may be inadequate in this case, as they depend on the presence of relators with few syllables. Our results rely on two variants of the ping-pong lemma that we develop, applicable to groups that are possibly non-free. These variants aim to isolate the group elements responsible for the failure of the classical ping-pong lemma.

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

We obtain an extension of a result of Camina, Iniguez, and Thillaisundaram by providing improved bounds for the case of finite nilpotent groups of class $2$ for words in an arbitrary number of variables, and also settle the conjecture in some cases. We achieve this by obtaining words that are identically distributed on a group to a given word. In doing so, we also obtain an improvement of a result of Iniguez and Sangroniz using elementary techniques.

Abstract:We prove that, for a finitely generated group hyperbolic relative to virtually abelian subgroups, the generalised word problem for a parabolic subgroup is the language of a real-time Turing machine. Then, for a hyperbolic group, we show that the generalised word problem for a quasiconvex subgroup is a real-time language under either of two additional hypotheses on the subgroup. By extending the Muller-Schupp theorem we show that the generalised word problem for a finitely generated subgroup of a finitely generated virtually free group is context-free. Conversely, we prove that a hyperbolic group must be virtually free if it has a torsion-free quasiconvex subgroup of infinite index with context-free generalised word problem.

Abstract:Modelled on efficient algorithms for solving the conjugacy problem in hyperbolic groups, we define and study the permutation conjugacy length function. This function estimates the length of a short conjugator between words $u$ and $v$, up to taking cyclic permutations. This function might be bounded by a constant, even in the case when the standard conjugacy length function is unbounded. We give applications to the complexity of the conjugacy problem, estimating conjugacy growth rates, and languages. Our main result states that for a relatively hyperbolic group, the permutation conjugacy length function is bounded by the permutation conjugacy length function of the parabolic subgroups.

Abstract:Certain results on representations of quivers have analogs in the structure theory of general Coxeter groups. A fixed Coxeter element turns the Coxeter graph into an acyclic quiver, allowing for the definition of a preprojective root. A positive root is an analog of an indecomposable representation of the quiver. The Coxeter group is finite if and only if every positive root is preprojective, which is analogous to the well-known result that a quiver is of finite representation type if and only if every indecomposable representation is preprojective. Combinatorics of orientation-admissible words in the graph monoid of the Coxeter graph relates strongly to reduced words and the weak order of the group.

A combinatorial take on hierarchical hyperbolicity and applications to quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We give a simple combinatorial criterion, in terms of an action on a hyperbolic simplicial complex, for a group to be hierarchically hyperbolic. We apply this to show that quotients of mapping class groups by large powers of Dehn twists are hierarchically hyperbolic (and even relatively hyperbolic in the genus 2 case). Under residual finiteness assumptions, we construct many non-elementary hyperbolic quotients of mapping class groups. Using these quotients, we reduce questions of Reid and Bridson-Reid-Wilton about finite quotients of mapping class groups to residual finiteness of specific hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:A conjecture of Rosenberger says that a group of the form $\langle x,y|x^p=y^q=W(x,y)^r=1\rangle$ (with $r>1$) is either virtually solvable or contains a non-abelian free subgroup. This note is an account of an attack on the conjecture in the case $(p,q,r)=(2,4,2)$. The results obtained are only partial, but nevertheless provide strong evidence in support of the conjecture in the case in question, in that the word $W$ in any counterexample is shown to satisfy some strong restrictions. The exponent-sums of $x$ and $y$ in $W$ must be even and odd respectively, while its free-product (or syllable) length must be at least 68. There is also a report of computer investigations which yield a stronger lower bound of 196 for the free-product length.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual CAT(0) cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Abstract:Every word in a free group induces a word measure -- a probability measure defined via the word map -- on every compact group. This paper presents a conjectural picture about the role of a plethora of stable invariants of words in word measures on groups. These invariants generalize the stable commutator length and include, among others, two invariants recently defined by Wilton: the stable primitivity rank and a non-oriented analog of stable commutator length we call stable square length. The conjectures say, roughly, that these stable invariants control the asymptotics of the expected values of stable characters, under word measures. We reinforce these conjectures by proving a version for word measures on wreath products, and by introducing a related formula for stable irreducible characters of the symmetric group.
