Abstract:We show that the intersection of the rational derived series of a one-relator group is rationally perfect and is normally generated by a single element. As a corollary, we characterise precisely when a one-relator group is residually rationally solvable.

Abstract:We prove that one-relator groups with negative immersions are hyperbolic and virtually special; this resolves a recent conjecture of Louder and Wilton. As a consequence, one-relator groups with negative immersions are residually finite, linear and have isomorphism problem decidable among one-relator groups. Using the fact that parafree one-relator groups have negative immersions, we answer a question of Baumslag's from 1986. The main new tool we develop is a refinement of the classic Magnus--Moldavanskii hierarchy for one-relator groups. We introduce the notions of Z-stable HNN-extensions and Z-stable hierarchies. We then show that a one-relator group is hyperbolic and has a quasi-convex one-relator hierarchy if and only if it does not contain a Baumslag--Solitar subgroup and has a Z-stable one-relator hierarchy.

Abstract:We provide new examples of groups without rational cross-sections (also called regular normal forms), using connections with bounded generation and rational orders on groups. Specifically, our examples are extensions of infinite torsion groups, groups of Grigorchuk type, wreath products similar to $C_2\wr(C_2\wr \mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z\wr F_2$, a group of permutations of $\mathbb Z$, and a finitely presented HNN extension of the first Grigorchuk group. This last group is the first example of finitely presented group with solvable word problem and without rational cross-sections. It is also not autostackable, and has no left-regular complete rewriting system.

Membership problems for positive one-relator groups and one-relation monoids

Abstract:Motivated by approaches to the word problem for one-relation monoids arising from work of Adian and Oganesian (1987), Guba (1997), and Ivanov, Margolis and Meakin (2001), we study the submonoid and rational subset membership problems in one-relation monoids and in positive one-relator groups. We give the first known examples of positive one-relator groups with undecidable submonoid membership problem, and apply this to give the first known examples of one-relation monoids with undecidable submonoid membership problem. We construct several infinite families of one-relation monoids with undecidable submonoid membership problem, including examples that are defined by relations of the form $w=1$ but which are not groups, and examples defined by relations of the form $u=v$ where both of $u$ and $v$ are non-empty. As a consequence we obtain a classification of the right-angled Artin groups that can arise as subgroups of one-relation monoids. We also give examples of monoids with a single defining relation of the form $aUb = a$, and examples of the form $aUb=aVa$, with undecidable rational subset membership problem. We give a one-relator group defined by a freely reduced word of the form $uv^{-1}$ with $u, v$ positive words, in which the prefix membership problem is undecidable. Finally, we prove the existence of a special two-relator inverse monoid with undecidable word problem, and in which both the relators are positive words. As a corollary, we also find a positive two-relator group with undecidable prefix membership problem. In proving these results, we introduce new methods for proving undecidability of the rational subset membership problem in monoids and groups, including by finding suitable embeddings of certain trace monoids.

Abstract:Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

Abstract:In this article, we establish results concerning the cohomology of Zariski dense subgroups of solvable linear algebraic groups. We show that for an irreducible solvable $\mathbb{Q}$-defined linear algebraic group $\mathbf{G}$, there exists an isomorphism between the cohomology rings with coefficients in a finite dimensional rational $\mathbf{G}$-module $M$ of the associated $\mathbb{Q}$-defined Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g_\mathbb{Q}}$ and Zariski dense subgroups $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ that satisfy the condition that they intersect the $\mathbb{Q}$-split maximal torus discretely. We further prove that the restriction map in rational cohomology from $\mathbf{G}$ to a Zariski dense subgroup $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ with coefficients in $M$ is an injection. We then derive several results regarding finitely generated solvable groups of finite abelian rank and their representations on cohomology.

Abstract:In this paper we generalise and unify the results and methods used by Benson, Liardet, Evetts, and Evetts & Levine, to show that rational sets in a virtually abelian group G have rational (relative) growth series with respect to any generating set for G. We prove equivalences between the structures used in the literature, and establish the rationality of important classes of sets in G: definable sets, algebraic sets, conjugacy representatives and coset representatives (of any fixed subgroup), among others. Furthermore, we show that any rational set, when written as words over the generating set of G, has several EDT0L representations.

Abstract:We introduce and study some families of groups whose irreducible characters take values on quadratic extensions of the rationals. We focus mostly on a generalization of inverse semi-rational groups, which we call uniformly semi-rational groups. Moreover, we associate to every finite group two invariants, called rationality and semi-rationality of the group. They measure respectively how far a group is from being rational and how much uniformly rational it is. We determine the possible values that these invariants may take for finite nilpotent groups. We also classify the fields that can occur as the field generated by the character values of a finite nilpotent group.

On the coherence of one-relator groups and their group algebras

Abstract:We prove that one-relator groups are coherent, solving a well-known problem of Gilbert Baumslag. Our proof strategy is readily applicable to many classes of groups of cohomological dimension two. We show that fundamental groups of two-complexes with non-positive immersions are homologically coherent, we show that groups with staggered presentations and many Coxeter groups are coherent and we show that group algebras over fields of characteristic zero of groups with reducible presentations without proper powers are coherent.

Abstract:We prove a rigidity theorem for morphisms from products of open subschemes of the projective line into solvable groups not containing a copy of $\Ga$ (for example, wound unipotent groups). As a consequence, we deduce several structural results about unirational group schemes, including that unirationality for group schemes descends through separable extensions. We also apply the main result to prove that permawound unipotent groups are unirational and -- when wound -- commutative.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rationality properties of reductive group actions which are defined over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. Thereby, we unify Luna's theory of spherical systems and Borel-Tits' theory of reductive groups. In particular, we define for any reductive group action a generalized Tits index whose main constituents are a root system and a generalization of the anisotropic kernel. The index controls to a large extent the behavior at infinity (i.e., embeddings). For k-spherical varieties (i.e., where a minimal parabolic has an open orbit) we obtain explicit (wonderful) completions of the set of rational points. For local fields this means honest compactifications generalizing the maximal Satake compactification of a symmetric space. Our main tool is a k-version of the local structure theorem.

Abstract:We construct rational projective 4-dimensional varieties with the property that certain Lawson homology groups tensored with Q{ \mathbb {Q}} are infinite dimensional Q{\mathbb {Q}}-vector spaces. More generally, for each pair of integers pp and kk, with k≥0k\geq 0, p>0p>0, we find a projective variety YY such that LpH2p+k(Y)L_pH_{2p+k}(Y) is infinitely generated. We also construct two singular rational projective 3-dimensional varieties YY and Y′Y’ with the same homeomorphism type but different Lawson homology groups; specifically, L1H3(Y)L_1H_3(Y) is not isomorphic to L1H3(Y′)L_1H_3(Y’) even up to torsion.

On groups of units of special and one-relator inverse monoids

Abstract:We investigate the groups of units of one-relator and special inverse monoids. These are inverse monoids which are defined by presentations where all the defining relations are of the form $r=1$. We develop new approaches for finding presentations for the group of units of a special inverse monoid, and apply these methods to give conditions under which the group admits a presentation with the same number of defining relations as the monoid. In particular our results give sufficient conditions for the group of units of a one-relator inverse monoid to be a one-relator group. When these conditions are satisfied these results give inverse semigroup theoretic analogues of classical results of Adjan for one-relator monoids, and Makanin for special monoids. In contrast, we show that in general these classical results do not hold for one-relator and special inverse monoids. In particular, we show that there exists a one-relator special inverse monoid whose group of units is not a one-relator group (with respect to any generating set), and we show that there exists a finitely presented special inverse monoid whose group of units is not finitely presented.

Abstract:Let G be a finite subgroup of GL4(Q). The group G induces an action on Q(x1,x2,x3,x4), the rational function field of four variables over Q. Theorem. The fixed subfield Q(x1,x2,x3,x4)G:={f∈Q(x1,x2,x3,x4):σ⋅f=ffor anyσ∈G} is rational (i.e. purely transcendental) over Q, except for two groups which are images of faithful representations of C8 and C3⋊C8 into GL4(Q) (both fixed fields for these two exceptional cases are not rational over Q). There are precisely 227 such groups in GL4(Q) up to conjugation; the answers to the rationality problem for most of them were proved by Kitayama and Yamasaki (2009) [KY] except for four cases. We solve these four cases left unsettled by Kitayama and Yamasaki; thus the whole problem is solved completely.
Finite abelian groups acting on rationally connected threefolds I: Groups of product type

Abstract:We initiate the study of finite abelian groups that faithfully act on three-dimensional rationally connected varieties. We show that these groups can be naturally divided into three types. The first type consists of finite abelian groups that are products of two groups that belong to the Cremona group of rank 1 and 2, respectively; the second type consists of cyclic extensions of finite abelian groups acting on a K3 surface; the third type consists of groups that act on terminal Fano threefolds with empty anti-canonical linear system. We also establish a boundedness result for the groups of the second type.

Abstract:We prove using jet schemes that the zero loci of the moment maps for the quivers with one vertex and at least two loops have rational singularities. This implies that the spaces of representations of the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus at least two have rational singularities. This has consequences for the representation zeta function of the special linear group over the integers and over the p-adic integers.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.
