Abstract:In this meta-analysis and systematic literature review of refractive outcomes after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), the extent of the refractive shift and an overview of reasons for refractive shift after DMEK are provided. The PubMed library was screened for articles containing the terms "Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty," "DMEK," "Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty combined with cataract surgery," "triple-DMEK" combined with "refractive outcomes," "refractive shift," and "hyperopic shift." The refractive outcomes after DMEK were analyzed and compared using a fixed and random effects model. The overall mean change of the spherical equivalent outcome when compared with the preoperative value in cases of DMEK or when compared with the preoperative target refraction in cases of DMEK combined with cataract surgery was +0.43 diopters (D) (95% CI, 0.31-0.55). When DMEK is combined with cataract surgery, a target refraction of -0.5 D is recommended to achieve emmetropia. Changes in the posterior corneal curvature are identified as the main cause of the refractive hyperopic shift.
[Mutiple Factors Analysis of the Effects of Excimer Laser Photorefractive Keratectomy].

Abstract:PURPOSE:To observe the effect of excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) correcting myopia and astigmatism, and to study the related factors.METHOD:PRK was performed with the aim to correct myopia errors from 1.00 to 16.00 diopters on 529 myopia eyes (306 patients). All eyes were divided into two groups: Group I: -1.00-6.00 D(294 eyes); group II: -6.25-16.00 D(235 eyes). All the patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months.RESULTS:At postoperative 12 months the rates of uncorrected visual acuity more than or equal to 10/20 or 20/20 were 97.5%, 77.5% in group I, and 80.3%, 32.8% in group II respectively; 92.5% of eyes were within +/- 1.00 diopter of the desired emmetropia in group I, but 42.6% in group II; The influential factors of changes of postoperative diopters was the severity of corneal haze, methods of removing corneal epithelium, intraocular pressure, the central corneal thickness.CONCLUSION:The excimer laser PRK is regarded to be a very predictable, safe, stable, and effective method to correct myopia up to -6.00 D. Prior to operation, the plan would be disigned according to diopters, ages, corneal thickness intraocular pressure. During operation, the corneal epithelium bad better to be removed by laser.
Using the posterior to anterior corneal curvature radii ratio to minimize the risk of a postoperative hyperopic shift after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate different corneal parameters in identifying patients at risk of a hyperopic shift after (DMEK). Methods: This retrospective study included 92 eyes of patients with FECD after DMEK surgery. Pachymetry parameters, various tomographic parameters and densitometry values before and after DMEK were determined using a rotating Scheimpflug system (Pentacam HR, Oculus). For assessing the posterior to anterior corneal curvature relationship, we calculated the RPA (posterior to anterior corneal curvature radii ratio). Results: The average keratometry reading of the posterior corneal surface (KmB) increased and the total corneal refractive power (TCRP) decreased significantly after surgery (P < .001). There was a significant difference between the preoperative and postoperative RPA (P < .001) and the posterior Q value (P < .001). The strongest correlation was found between the change in the KmB and the preoperative RPA (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0.872, P < .001). In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the highest AUC values (for ∆KmB) among the different preoperative parameters tested were obtained for RPA and posterior Q value (Asph. QB) with AUROC (area under the ROC) values of 0.95 and 0.89, respectively. Conclusions: The Q value and the RPA showed the highest correlation with the change in corneal refractive power and the greatest AUC. These parameters could be used as surrogate markers to identify eyes that might be at risk of a greater postoperative hyperopic shift, which would allow more accurate setting of refractive goals.

Abstract:In phakic patients Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) or Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) are frequently combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (triple procedure). This surgery might cause a refractive shift difficult to predict. Early DMEK and DSAEK results have shown a tendency toward a hyperopic shift. Myopic postoperative refraction is typically intended to correct this postoperative refractive defect and to bring all eyes as close to emmetropia as possible. We sought to understand the mechanism underlying the hyperopization and to identify predictive factors for poorer refractive outcomes, the most suitable target refraction and IOL calculation methods in patients undergoing combined cataract extraction and lamellar endothelial corneal transplantation (DSAEK or DMEK) for endothelial dysfunctions. Of the 407 articles analyzed, only 18 were included in the analysis. A myopic target between -0.50 D and -0.75 was the most common (up to -1.50 for DSAEK triple procedures), even though no optimum target was found. Hyperopic surprises appeared more frequently in corneas that were flatter in the center than in the periphery (oblate posterior profile). Among the numerous IOL calculation formulas, there was no apparent preference.

Characteristics and Correlative Factors of Posterior Corneal Surface Changes after Laser in Situ Keratomileusis

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the changes of the posterior corneal surface and the factors influencing these changes after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). These factors included the preoperative refraction, preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), preoperative corneal thickness, spherical equivalent correction and one-week postoperative corneal thickness.METHODS:The posterior corneal radius of curvature for the posterior best fit sphere (PBFS), irregularity of posterior surface, and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were obtained with the scanning slit topography system before and 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after LASIK in 64 eyes of 34 patients with myopic refractive errors of -2.25 to -12.5 diopters. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the factors that affecting these changes of posterior corneal surface. The difference of radius PBFS and posterior elevation difference (PED) was used as an indicator for the forward shift of posterior corneal surface.RESULTS:The ACD before the surgery and 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after the surgery was (3.2448 +/- 0.2806), (3.2770 +/- 0.2810), (3.2579 +/- 0.2932) and (3.2651 +/- 0.2875) mm, respectively. The PBFS at that time was (6.5095 +/- 0.2177), (6.3731 +/- 0.2127), (6.4257 +/- 0.2358) and (6.4354 +/- 0.2266) mm, respectively. The posterior corneal irregularity at 5 diameters zone was 0.622 +/- 0.142, 0.978 +/- 0.244, 0.884 +/- 0.207 and 0.881 +/- 0.174, respectively The preoperative posterior corneal radius of curvature for PBFS, the irregularity of the posterior surface and the ACD were significantly different from that of postoperative data at each time point (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in these indexes between 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. Multiple regression analysis showed that factors relevant to the changes of posterior corneal surface were the corrected preoperative refraction (regression coefficient r = 0.0173, P = 0.005) and 1 week postoperative corneal thickness (mm) (regression coefficient r = -1.495, P = 0.001).CONCLUSIONS:The posterior corneal surface after LASIK become steeper and more irregular and remains stable in three months after the surgery. Eyes with thinner corneas and higher myopia requiring more ablation are more predisposed to the changes of posterior corneal surface. The results of the present study should not be used in extremely high degree myopia. A study using a larger group of patients with a longer observation period is required.
CD8brightCD56+ T Cells Are Cytotoxic Effectors in Patients with Active Behçet’s Uveitis1

Abstract:Behçet’s uveitis, characterized by chronic recurrent uveitis and obliterating retinal vasculitis, frequently causes bilateral blindness. Intraocular infiltration of TCRαβ+CD8brightCD56+ cells was a distinct feature in Behçet’s uveitis. However, phenotypic natures and effector functions of the cells have remained elusive. This study was conducted to determine phenotypic and functional characteristics and cytotoxic mechanisms of CD8brightCD56+ T cells in Behçet’s uveitis. CD11b+CD27−CD62L− phenotypes of CD8brightCD56+ T cells were increased in patients with active Behçet’s uveitis compared with inactive Behcet’s patients and normal controls. Interestingly, CD45RAdimCD45RO− phenotypes were expanded, and CD94 expression was markedly up-regulated in contrast to the down-regulation of NKG2D. Furthermore, these subsets were polarized to produce IFN-γ and contained high amounts of preformed intracellular perforin while exclusively expressing surface FasL upon PI stimulation. Moreover, the cytolytic functions of freshly isolated CD8brightCD56+ T cells were up-regulated against both K562 (NK-sensitive) and Raji (NK-resistant) cells, which were effectively inhibited by perforin inhibitor (concanamycin A). Their cytolytic activity against HUVECs was also increased and was effectively suppressed by Fas ligand inhibitor (brefeldin A) and partly by perforin inhibitor. Furthermore, cytolytic functions of PMA and ionomycin-stimulated CD8brightCD56+ T cells against HUVECs were greatly enhanced, by pretreatment of recombinant human IFN-γ on HUVECs. Therefore, CD8brightCD56+ T cells in Behçet’s uveitis are characterized by cytotoxic effector phenotypes with functional NK receptors and function as strong cytotoxic effectors through both Fas ligand-dependent and perforin-dependent pathways.
Impact of postoperative intraocular pressure elevation on graft endothelial cells in non-preexisting glaucoma eyes undergoing descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty: a cohort study

Abstract:Background: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) has become the dominant keratoplasty procedure. However, the impact of high intraocular pressure (IOP) on the DMEK prognosis in patients without preexisting glaucoma remains unknown. Methods: Non-glaucoma patients who underwent DMEK in Peking University Third Hospital between July 2017 and March 2023 with a follow-up duration longer than six months were included in this cohort study. Eyes were divided into three groups: Group A) normal IOP; Group B) early IOP elevation (IOP ≥ 30 mmHg or increase of more than 10 mmHg from baseline within 3 days); Group C) intermediate-term IOP elevation (IOP > 21 mmHg or increase of more than 10 mmHg from baseline after 14 days postoperatively). The postoperative IOP, endothelial cell density (ECD), central corneal thickness (CCT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and rate of graft failure were analysed. Results: Forty-seven eyes from forty-seven patients were included. Thirty-seven eyes were bullous keratopathy, and ten were Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy. Twenty-five eyes were classified as Group A, six as Group B and sixteen as Group C. The mean peak IOP was 49.00 ± 4.99 mmHg in Group B eyes and 31.89 ± 11.75 mmHg in Group C eyes. The postoperative BCVA significantly differed from that before surgery (P < 0.001). The ECD at 3 months after surgery in eyes with intermediate-term IOP elevation was lower (P = 0.032). Four eyes with intermediate-term IOP elevation developed graft failure (P = 0.001). Conclusions: Intermediate-term IOP elevation after DMEK may reduce the graft ECD and lead to graft failure within six months after surgery. However, early IOP elevation had no effect on the prognosis. Careful IOP monitoring and intermediate-term IOP management should be conducted for graft protection.
Comparative analysis of corneal parameters between DMEK and UT‐DSAEK eyes in 3‐year follow‐up

Abstract:Aims/Purpose: The aim of the study was to provide a comparative analysis of corneal parameter changes compared to their preoperative values between Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT‐DSAEK) patients. Methods: The study included 27 eyes after UT‐DSAEK and 34 eyes after DMEK. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell count (ECC), central corneal thickness (CCT), mean keratometry (MK), mean astigmatism (MA), astigmatism asymmetry (AA) and higher order aberrations (HOAs) were assessed at baseline and 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after the surgery. Results: Patients after DMEK had significantly better BCVA than patients after UT‐DSAEK (mean 0.9 vs. 0.6 at 24th month, respectively, p = 0.002 and 0.9 vs. 0.7 at 36th month of follow‐up, respectively, p = 0.001). From the 3rd month post operation, ECC was higher in the DMEK eyes than in the UT‐DSAEK eyes ( p = 0.01). However, the groups did not differ in this parameter at 24th and 36th month of observation. In a bivariate analysis that was adjusted for age, DMEK was associated with a smaller decrease in posterior MK at the 1‐month (β = −0.49, p = 0.002), 3‐month (β = −0.50, p < 0.001), 6‐month (β = −0.58, p < 0.001) and 12‐month (β = −0.49, p < 0.001) follow‐up visits. Significant differences in MK, AA and HOA values of the posterior surface of the cornea at 12th, 24th and 36th month of observation and MA of the posterior surface of the cornea at 24th month of observation were found as well, with no differences in the total values of these parameters. Accordingly, no significant differences in changes in MA, AA or HOAs compared to the baseline values were identified between the eyes after DMEK and UT‐DSAEK at any follow‐up time point. Conclusions: UT‐DSAEK seem to be an easier and safer technique than DMEK while maintaining similar outcomes regarding irregular astigmatism and total keratometry values. Nevertheless, DMEK produces significantly better BCVA outcomes.

Abstract:Purpose: To compare the postoperative complications and clinical outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in eyes with previous glaucoma filtering surgery. Methods: In this retrospective comparative case series, we analysed postoperative visual acuity and intraocular pressure, graft survival, rate of graft detachment and/or dislocation, number of rebubbling and/or graft repositioning procedures, and graft rejection or failure (primary and secondary). Results: Sixteen eyes with DMEK and 80 eyes with DSAEK with previous glaucoma surgery were studied. The results were recorded at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. No statistically significant differences in postoperative visual acuity were found between the two groups at any stage of the follow-up. Intraocular pressure was lower in the DMEK group at the follow-up stage of 3 (p = 0.0022) and 12 months (p = 0.0480). Visually significant graft detachment was recorded in 31.3% and 22.5% of DMEK and DSAEK cases, respectively (p = 0.4541). All DMEK detachments (n = 5) were managed with slit-lamp rebubbling. Out of 18 graft detachments in the DSAEK group, 2 grafts were observed due to small graft detachment, 6 large graft detachments underwent rebubbling performed in the operating theatre, and 10 eyes needed primary graft repositioning for graft dislocation. Conclusions: DMEK is a feasible option to treat endothelial failure in complex eyes with previous glaucoma surgery. In the DMEK group, visual acuity outcomes and possibly postoperative intraocular pressure control were better compared with the DSAEK group.

Abstract:Purpose: We herein present Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) as an effective surgical means of treatment for the management of interface fluid syndrome (IFS) in a series of cases with distant history of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Methods: Three cases from a single institution were included. All patients had documented IFS in the setting of history of LASIK. All 3 patients underwent DMEK for the treatment of IFS. Visual acuity, clinical findings, pachymetry, endothelial cell count, and anterior segment optical coherence tomography were recorded. Results: We describe 3 cases of late-onset IFS that developed in eyes many years after LASIK (ranging from 15 to 31 years). All 3 patients had clinically significant corneal edema and evidence of poor endothelial function at the time of IFS diagnosis. DMEK was subsequently performed in each case. All 3 eyes showed resolution of corneal edema and improvement in best-corrected visual acuity after DMEK. Conclusions: DMEK can provide successful visual and anatomical recovery in patients who have had previous LASIK and experience late-onset IFS due to endothelial cell dysfunction.

Three-Year Stability of Posterior Corneal Elevation after Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (smile) for Moderate and High Myopia

Abstract:PURPOSE: To investigate long-term changes in posterior corneal elevation after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).METHODS: Thirty-six eyes of 20 patients (7 male, 13 female) who underwent SMILE were recruited for this prospective consecutive study. The mean preoperative manifest spherical equivalent was -6.24 +/- 1.47 diopters (D) (range: -3.88 to -8.75 D). Posterior corneal surfaces were measured by a Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam; Oculus Optikgerate GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) preoperatively and at 1 month, 6 months, 12 months, 2 years, and 3 years after surgery. Posterior central elevation (PCE), posterior maximal elevation (PME), and posterior elevation at the thinnest corneal point (PTE) in the central 4 mm area above the best fit sphere (BFS) were analyzed. The BFS was the same across all followup periods and determined by the preoperative data. A P value of less than.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: All surgeries were executed without complications and no case of keratectasia was observed during the follow-up. An uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better was achieved in 100% of eyes at the last visit. The mean change of PCE, PME, and PTE at 3 years after the operation was -2.39 +/- 2.85, 0.50 +/- 3.33, and -2.33 +/- 2.90 mu m, respectively. There were significant differences in the measurements of PCE and PTE before surgery and 3 years after surgery (P =.009); however, there was no significant difference in PME before surgery and 3 years after surgery (P = 1.000). No correlation was found between changes in posterior corneal elevation and residual bed thickness, ablation depth, and preoperative thinnest corneal thickness.CONCLUSIONS: The posterior corneal surface, measured using the Pentacam, was stable after SMILE in the long-term follow-up. The cause of the slight backward change of PCE and PTE needs further study.
[The Effect of Descemet-Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty Combined with Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery or Lens Exchange].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect and explore the complications of Descemet-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) combined with phacoemulsification cataract surgery or lens exchange in corneal endothelial dysfunction eyes with lens disorders.METHODS:Retrospective case series. Eighteen consecutive cases (20 eyes) were performed DSAEK combined with lens surgery from December 2007 to December 2008 in Department of Ophthalmology, Peking University Third Hospital. Five cases (7 eyes) were performed DSAEK combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) insertion. Seven cases were combined with anterior chamber IOL extraction, anterior vitrectomy and posterior chamber IOL insertion. Six aphakia cases were performed with DSAEK combined with anterior vitrectomy and sclera fixation posterior chamber IOL insertion. Postoperatively, the visual acuity, corneal transparency, central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell density (ECD) and complications were observed during the follow-up.RESULTS:The irritation was disappeared in all of patients. All of the corneas became transparent. The preoperative and postoperative mean CCT of the recipient beds was 859 µm and 553 µm respectively. T value was 5.303 (t = 5.303, P < 0.01). It was extremely significant difference. The mean ECD of the donors was 2987 cells/mm(2). The ECD was 1803 cells/mm(2) in three months postoperatively. The rate of endothelial cells loss was 41%. The visual acuity improved significantly except 9 eyes which had fundus disorders. Six eyes were better than 0.8. It was 55% in normal retinal function patients (6/11). The inflammatory reaction of the anterior chamber IOL eyes was most serious. Six eyes underwent graft dislocation. Five cases underwent high intraocular pressure. One case occurred graft rejection. These complications occurred in anterior chamber IOL eyes.CONCLUSIONS:DSAEK combined with phacoemulsification cataract surgery or lens exchange is a safe and effective surgical treatment for corneal endothelial dysfunction with lens disorders. More complications occur in anterior chamber IOL eyes. DSAEK should be cautiously chosen in abnormal iris and chamber angle structural eyes.

Abstract:PURPOSE To measure the alpha coefficient, the initial slope of the translocation dose-response curve, for 60Co gamma-rays in human lymphocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Human lymphocytes were exposed to 0, 0.32, 0.62 and 0.92 Gy of chronic 60Co gamma-rays under conditions that reduce the metabolic stress to the cells. Chromosome translocation frequencies were measured using fluorescence in situ hybridization with a whole-chromosome probe cocktail specific for chromosomes 1, 2, 4 (orange) and 3, 5, 6 (green). RESULTS A total of 72,383 metaphases were analysed (33,429 in exposed cells) in two individuals. The shape of the dose-response curves for translocations was linear, and alpha coefficient was measured as 0.024 +/- 0.002 translocations per cell per Gy for the combined data for two 24 year old male donors. CONCLUSION The alpha coefficients measured after chronic exposure were in good agreement with that reported in the literature for acute, low-dose exposure of human lymphocytes to 60Co gamma-rays.

Abstract:Aims/Purpose: To report the outcome of correction of high myopia with anterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). Methods: Retrospective study with 7 eyes of patients who underwent DALK. The main variables measured were corrected visual acuity (CVA) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), spherical equivalent, and endothelial cell density (ECD). Follow‐up was performed up to 24 months after the lens implant. Results: The spherical equivalent (SE) recorded a mean of −14.16 (± 3.50) before the lens implant and −0.30 (±0.93) after the implant, with a mean difference of 13.85 (10.25 to 13.85) and a p ‐value of <0.001. The mean of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) before the lens was 1.82 (±0.63), 6 months after lens implant was 0.22 (±0.07), and after 24 months, 0.30 (±0.14) with a p ‐value of 0.001. Among patients, 85.71% had a UCVA equal to or better than 0.3 logMAR and 42.85% had a UCVA of 0.2 logMAR vs. 0% preoperatively. 71.42% of the patients had residual ametropia within ±1.00 D. The mean corrected visual acuity (CVA) was 0.31 (±0.06) before lens implantation, 0.12 (±0.04) 6 months post‐ implantation and 0.14 (±0.05) 24 months post‐implantation. All patients had improvement of UCVA of at least 10 lines of vision (range 10 to 14); at 6 months, 71.42% of patients had a gain of at least 2 lines of vision in CVA and at 24 months only one patient had a decrease in UCVA. The mean difference in ECD was 68.71 (95% CI 11.97 to 125.44), corresponding to a loss of 1.26% of cells per year. Conclusions: Phakic IOLs are an effective and stable procedure for management of high myopia after DALK, demonstrating stable safety and efficacy rates up to 24 months. The known risk of endothelial loss should be closely monitored, as such loss is higher compared to eyes with phakic IOL implants without DALK.

Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty: a Prospective Study of 6-Month Visual Outcomes, Corneal Thickness and Endothelial Cell Loss

Abstract:To report 6-month outcomes of visual acuity, the corneal thickness and endothelial cell density (ECD) in patients undergoing femtosecond laser-assisted Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (FS-DSEK). This prospective, consecutive, interventional series examined 25 eyes of 25 patients who underwent FS-DSEK for Fuchs endothelial dystrophy and bullous keratopathy. The pre-cut corneal endothelial graft thickness (CET) was 150 µm. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central corneal thickness (CCT), donor CET, recipient corneal stromal thickness (CST) and ECD were assessed at 1 week and 1, 2, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. The mean BCVA at 6 months was 0.76 ± 0.35 logMAR units, improving from 1.54 ± 0.52 logMAR. CCT decreased significantly, from 759.8 ± 152.4 µm at 1 week to 631.7 ± 79.7 µm at 6 months (P = 0.001) postoperatively. CET recovered to 153.4 ± 33.7 µm (P = 0.076) at 6 months as pre-cut status. The CST decreased from 561.5 ± 96.3 µm at 1 week to 479.7 ± 57.9 µm at 6 months (P < 0.001). Preoperatively, the donor ECD was 2747.6 ± 255.4 cells/mm2, and the ECD decreased to 1729.1 ± 562.9 cells/mm2 at 6 months, for a peak ECD loss of 36.86%. A greater decrease in CST observed from 1 week to 6 months postoperatively correlated with a lower ECD loss (P = 0.019) and a lower preoperative ECD (P = 0.012). However, a thinner CET correlated with a higher preoperative ECD (P = 0.028). FS-DSEK is a safe and effective surgical alternative for corneal endothelial decompensation. The donor ECD and its changes could be used as predictive factors for the improvement of CST and CET.

Abstract:Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to demonstrate the brain activation during transition from unconscious to conscious breathing in seven healthy human subjects. In right-handed volunteers, the activated areas were found in both hemispheres. The medial part of the precentral gyrus (area 4) was constantly activated in the left hemisphere. Additional activated areas were demonstrated in the premotor cortex and in the posterior parietal cortex. The activated cortical sites exhibited analogous distribution in the right hemisphere. In two out of the seven subjects. activated sites were also observed in the cerebellar hemispheres, and in the lentiform and caudate nuclei.

Abstract:Purpose: The study of change of the epithelium of the cornea in two points after Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK): at the peak of the cornea (ETpeak) and in the middle of the cornea (ETcenter). The study of the change of Lower Order Aberrations (LOAs) and Higher Order Aberrations (HOAs), Contrast Sensitivity (CS) and Corrected Distance Visual Acuity (CDVA) and the relationship of these parameters with the change of ETpeak and ETcenter after PRK. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven patients (5 women and 22 men) with an average age of 27 years (age range 23-36) underwent PRK. For two years all 27 patients had stable refraction. The refractive objective was emmetropia. Results: After PRK, a statistically significant difference was found between pre-surgery and post-surgery measurements of ETpeak and ETcenter with in relation to LOAs, HOAs, CS and CDVA. As well as between CS and HOA (Z33). Conclusion: In conclusion, after PRK, the change in ETcenter and ETpeak is associated with the change in CDVA and the changes in LOAs and HOAs. Also, the change in CDVA is related to SC, LOAs and HOAS. Finally, the change in the ETcenter appears to be related to the change in the CS.
