Abstract:Searching for efficient and inexpensive catalysts to replace precious metal-based catalyst in air-cathode microbial fuel cells is crucial for the practical application and commercialization in wastewater treatment and energy generation. Here, through a simple pyrolysis process, sewage sludge could be converted into carbon material with hierarchically porous structure, which demonstrates oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance. Subsequently, co-doping Mn and N species on the carbonized sewage sludge matrix could further improve the ORR catalytic performance, which even demonstrates comparable performance to the commercial expensive Pt/C catalyst in air-cathode microbial fuels cells (MFC). The highest maximum power density of MFC with Mn-N/SC air-cathode is as high as 1,120 mW m-2, which is similar to the power density of the air-cathode MFC equipped commercialized Pt/C catalyst (1,240 mW m-2). Considering the simple operation, significant cost-saving and easy scale-up of the proposed 'trash-to-treasure' method, it is promising to convert harmful sewage sludge into efficient non-platinum cathode catalysts in microbial fuel cells.

Abstract:A novel manganese-polypyrrole-carbon nanotube (Mn-PPY-CNT) composite is synthesized and demonstrated as an efficient and stable cathode catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The Mn-PPY-CNT composite is prepared by solvothermal method and comprehensively characterized. Subsequently, electro-catalytic capability of this novel catalyst in neutral electrolyte has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, showing that Mn-PPY-CNT can catalyze ORR in neutral medium with quite good activity, possibly due to manganese-nitrogen (Mn-N) active sites. To further verify catalytic capability of the Mn-PPY-CNT composite, it has been utilized as the cathode catalyst in air-cathode MFCs. It has been found that Mn-PPY-CNT-based MFCs yield efficient and stable performance with maximum power density of 169 mW m(-2) at the loading of 1 mg cm(-2), and 213 mW m(-2) at the loading of 2 mg cm(-2), comparable to MFCs with the benchmark platinum/carbon black (Pt/C) catalyst. Furthermore, the catalyst shows good long-term stability which is essential for MFC study. This is the first study regarding the manganese-heterocycle polymer composite as a new ORR catalyst, and it has successfully demonstrated that using cheap Mn-PPY-CNT catalyst instead of Pt/C could improve the feasibility of scaling up MFCs for practical applications. Nano-structured Manganese Oxide As a Cathodic Catalyst for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction in a Microbial Fuel Cell Fed with a Synthetic Wastewater.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide new opportunities for the simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation. Enhanced oxygen reduction capacity of cost-effective metal-based catalysts in an air cathode is essential for the scale-up and commercialization of MFCs in the field of wastewater treatment. We demonstrated that a nano-structured MnO(x) material, prepared by an electrochemically deposition method, could be an effective catalyst for oxygen reduction in an MFC to generate electricity with the maximum power density of 772.8 mW/m(3) and remove organics when the MFC was fed with an acetate-laden synthetic wastewater. The nano-structured MnO(x) with the controllable size and morphology could be readily obtained with the electrochemical deposition method. Both morphology and manganese oxidation state of the nano-scale catalyst were largely dependent on the electrochemical preparation process, and they governed its catalytic activity and the cathodic oxygen reduction performance of the MFC accordingly. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) performed on each nano-structured material suggests that the MnO(x) nanorods had an electrochemical activity towards oxygen reduction reaction via a four-electron pathway in a neutral pH solution. This work provides useful information on the facile preparation of cost-effective cathodic catalysts in a controllable way for the single-chamber air-cathode MFC for wastewater treatment.
Polyaniline/β-MnO2 nanocomposites as cathode electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction in microbial fuel cells

Abstract:An efficient and inexpensive catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), polyaniline (PANI) and β-MnO2 nanocomposites (PANI/β-MnO2), was developed for air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The PANI/β-MnO2, β-MnO2, PANI and β-MnO2 mixture modified graphite felt electrodes were fabricated as air-cathodes in double-chambered MFCs and their cell performances were compared. At a dosage of 6 mg cm-2, the maximum power densities of MFCs with PANI/β-MnO2, β-MnO2, PANI and β-MnO2 mixture cathodes reached 248, 183 and 204 mW m-2, respectively, while the cathode resistances were 38.4, 45.5 and 42.3 Ω, respectively, according to impedance analysis. Weak interaction existed between the rod-like β-MnO2 and surficial growth granular PANI, this together with the larger specific surface area and PANI electric conducting nature enhanced the electrochemical activity for ORR and improved the power generation. The PANI/β-MnO2 nanocomposites are a promising cathode catalyst for practical application of MFCs.
Manganese dioxide as an alternative cathodic catalyst to platinum in microbial fuel cells

Abstract:In this paper, three manganese dioxide materials, alpha-MnO(2), beta-MnO(2), gamma-MnO(2) were tested as alternative cathodic catalysts to platinum (Pt) in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Prepared via hydrothermal method, the manganese dioxides were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method and their average oxidation states (AOS) were determined by the potential voltammetric titration method. The electro-catalytic activity of MnO(2) in neutral pH solution was determined by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and the results showed that all manganese dioxides can catalyze oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in neutral medium with different catalytic activities. beta-MnO(2) appeared to hold the highest catalytic activity due to its highest BET surface area and AOS. Beta-MnO(2) was further used as cathode catalyst in both cube and tube air-cathode MFCs, in which using Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) biofilm as biocatalyst and utilizing glucose as a substrate in the anode chamber. It was found that tube MFC produced higher output power, with the maximum volumetric power density of 3773+/-347 mW/m(3), than cube MFC. This study suggests that using beta-MnO(2) instead of Pt could potentially improve the feasibility of scaling up MFC designs for real applications by lowering production cost.

Abstract:As a promising energy conversion equipment, the performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) is affected by slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It is of great significance to explore electrocatalysts with high activity for sustainable energy applications. Herein, we synthesize the in-situ grown carbon nanotubes decorated electrocatalyst derived from copper-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) co-doped with cobalt and nitrogen () through straightforward immersion and pyrolysis process. The carbon nanotubes produced by metallic cobalt and high-activity bimetallic active sites formed by nitrogen doping enable to have the best oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance in alkaline electrolyte, with limit current density of 5.88 mA cm−2 and onset potential of 0.91 V (vs. RHE). Moreover, nanocomposite exhibits obvious antibacterial activity, and inhibiting the biofilm on cathode surface in antibacterial test and biomass quantification. The maximum power density (2757 mW m−3) of MFC modified with is even higher than Pt/C catalyst (2313 mW m−3). In short, nanocomposite can be an alternative cathode catalyst for MFC.

Abstract:The Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell (AMFC), is a device crucial for electrochemical energy production through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), conventionally relies on platinum catalysts. However, the challenges of excessive cost and inadequate stability in alkaline environments have hindered its widespread commercialization. Alpha manganese dioxide (αMnO 2 ), with diverse applications in energy and environmental domains, has potential as an alternative catalyst due to its lower metal costs and comparable catalytic activity. This study focuses on the synthesis of αMnO 2 nanotubes through controlled environment temperature, and integration with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Optimizing the gas pressure and temperature during synthesis resulted in structural changes in αMnO 2 nanotubes, with a notable increase in catalytic behavior at elevated temperatures. The sample treated at 450 °C and mixed with CNTs (CNT-MO450) demonstrated outstanding ORR performance and prolonged stability in an alkaline medium. Furthermore, the CNT-MO450 exhibited the highest current density of −5.2 mA/cm 2 at a potential of 0.65 V vs RHE, a peak power density of 73 mW/cm 2 (comparable to Pt/C at 95 mW/cm 2 ), and a charge transfer resistance of 310 Ω. The temperature treatment affected the αMnO 2 nanotubes, which resulted in increased length at an optimal temperature, leading to a larger surface area. This enhancement in surface area is crucial to improved catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, and extended stability during operation in alkaline media. The findings suggest that CNT-MO450 catalysts hold promise as a cost-effective and stable alternative catalyst for AMFCs.

Abstract:The anode electrode material is a crucial factor for the overall performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, a plain carbon paper modified with the CNT/MnO2 nanocomposite was used as the anode for the MFC and a mixed culture inoculum was used as the biocatalyst. The modified anode showed better electrochemical performance than that of plain carbon paper, and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) analysis showed the high surface area (94.6 m2/g) of the composite. The Mn4+ in the nanocomposite may enhance the electron transfer between the microorganisms and the anode material which facilitates electron conduction. Additionally, MnO2 can be used to store electrons due to its supercapacitance, which is comparable to that of the cytochromes present in the outer cell membranes of electrochemically active microorganisms. The MFC with a modified anode produced a maximum power density of 120 +/- 1.7 mW/m2, while the corresponding current density was 0.262 +/- 0.015 A/m2 at an external resistor of 800 omega with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.07 +/- 0.02 V. The unusually high OCV may be attributed to the high charge density developed on the bioanode by the charge accumulation in the MnO2 of the bioanode. This study showed that the CNT/MnO2 nanocomposite can be an excellent anode material for MFC.

Abstract:Nanoscale manganese dioxide particles supported onto carbon nanotubes (MnO2/CNTs) were prepared through a microwave-assisted reduction method and used as a catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an alkaline environment. The MnO2 with high crystallinity and nanosized birnessite-type was obtained by microwave irradiated for 60 s repeating 3 times. Especially, the MnO2/CNTs exhibited a positive onset potential (− 8 mV vs. Hg/HgO) of ORR, which was similar to that of 20 wt% Pt supported on CNTs (Pt/CNTs). It was also found that the Koutecky–Levich plots of MnO2/CNTs suggested that its ORR proceeds via a 4-electron pathway. In addition, the accelerated durability tests indicated that the MnO2/CNTs composite catalyst was more stable than Pt/CNTs in 0.1 M KOH solution. The enhanced electrochemical activity and stability of MnO2/CNTs composite electrocatalyst can be attributed to the high electrical conductivity of CNTs and unique microstructure between MnO2 and CNTs, making it a promising candidate as an oxygen reduction catalyst in metal–air batteries and fuel cells.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the formation of a biofilm on the cathode prevent efficient and stable operation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived N-doped carbon-supported CoCu-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (CoCu-LDH@NC) were synthesized as a bifunctional cathode catalyst for MFCs. CoCu-LDH supported on CoO@NC induced the production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from the NC matrix. CNTs and CoCu-LDH nanosheets improved the atomic reaction efficiency and active area for the ORR. The high-speed electron-transfer channel was attributed to two-dimensional CoCu-LDH nanosheets and one-dimensional CNTs. The catalytic activity and stability of CoO@NC were sustained through the incorporation of CoCu-LDH nanosheets. The electronic interaction of CoCu-LDH and CoO@NC enhanced the ORR catalytic activities. CoCu-LDH nanosheets generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Cu+, improving the antibacterial activity to prevent the growth of biofilm for MFCs. CoCu-LDH@NC demonstrated superior oxygen reduction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.84 V and an onset potential of 0.89 V. The maximum power density and operating cycle of the MFCs assembled with CoCu-LDH@NC reached 1012 mW m–2 and 170 h, respectively. This work offers guidance to enhancing the ORR catalytic activity and stability by designing antibacterial ORR catalysts.

Abstract:The low catalytic activity of activated carbon (AC) toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in air cathode severely limits the electricity production of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, a novel cobalt-nitrogen-carbon nanotube co-implanted activated carbon catalysts (CoNC@AC) were prepared by growth of Co/Zn-based metal organic frameworks on AC followed by thermal pyrolysis. The CoNC@AC catalyzed ORR via an efficient four-electron pathway in pH-neutral medium, and exhibited superb ORR catalytic activity comparable to commercial Pt/C. As compared with pristine AC, implantation of Co, N and carbon nanotubes into CoNC@AC improved the ORR current density and exchange current density of air cathodes by 120% and 73% respectively. The maximumpower density of MFCs achieved 2045 +/- 43 mW m(-2) by using the optimized CoNC@AC pyrolyzed at 850 degrees C, which was 65% higher than that of pristine AC. The superb ORR performance of CoNC@AC originated from the synergistic effect of abundant Co-Nx, Pyridinic-N and Graphitic-N active sites, high graphitization degree, well dispersed Co nanoparticles and improved micro-mesoporous coexistence structure, which enabled high ORR catalytic activity and rapid mass transfer at the three-phase boundary. This work provides a new routine for large-scale synthesis of highly-efficient ORR electrocatalysts based on AC and metal organic frameworks, which has promising potential for the application in practical MFCs.
Xerogel-Derived Manganese Oxide/N-Doped Carbon as a Non-Precious Metal-Based Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst in Microbial Fuel Cells for Energy Conversion Applications

Abstract:Current study provides a novel strategy to synthesize the nano-sized MnO nanoparticles from the quick, ascendable, sol-gel synthesis strategy. The MnO nanoparticles are supported on nitrogen-doped carbon derived from the cheap sustainable source. The resulting MnO/N-doped carbon catalysts developed in this study are systematically evaluated via several physicochemical and electrochemical characterizations. The physicochemical characterizations confirms that the crystalline MnO nanoparticles are successfully synthesized and are supported on N-doped carbons, ascertained from the X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic studies. In addition, the developed MnO/N-doped carbon catalyst was also found to have adequate surface area and porosity, similar to the traditional Pt/C catalyst. Detailed investigations on the effect of the nitrogen precursor, heat treatment temperature, and N-doped carbon support on the ORR activity is established in 0.1 M of HClO4. It was found that the MnO/N-doped carbon catalysts showed enhanced ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.69 V vs. RHE, with nearly four electron transfers and excellent stability with just a loss of 10 mV after 20,000 potential cycles. When analyzed as an ORR catalyst in dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (DCMFC) with Nafion 117 membrane as the electrolyte, the MnO/N-doped carbon catalyst exhibited a volumetric power density of ~45 mW m2 and a 60% degradation of organic matter in 30 days of continuous operation.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in microbial fuel cell (MFC) was evaluated by using chemical activated nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (ANCNFs) as cathode catalyst. ANCNFs are synthesized through modified oxidative template assembly route and then activated by KOH reagent. The as-prepared ANCNFs formed three-dimensional carbonfiber framework with large specific surface area and hierarchical tetramodal pore size distribution spanning the micro-, meso- and macro pore range, centered at 0.48, 4.0, 18 and 70 nm. Compared with unactivated nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (NCNFs), ANCNFs exhibited a more positive onset potential, higher current density as well as higher electron transfer number in neutral environment, highlighting the importance of chemical activation process for improving the ORR performance. MFCs equipped with ANCNFs catalyst exhibited a high power output of 1377 ± 46 mW m−2, which is about 1.5 times the output of NCNFs cathode (921 ± 29 mW m−2), and as high as nearly 4 times of plain cathode (341 ± 9 mW m−2).

The potential of Co3O4 nanoparticles attached to the surface of MnO2 nanorods as cathode catalyst for single-chamber microbial fuel cell

Abstract:A simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to prepare the cathode catalyst of microbial fuel cell (MFC). MnO2@Co3O4 composite was successfully prepared by in-situ growth of nano-particle-like Co3O4 on nano-rod-like MnO2. The hybrid products had (121), (310), (311), (400) and (511) crystal planes, rod-like and point-like structures were observed. MnO2@Co3O4 nanohybrids were rich in a variety of metallic elements and provided rich electrochemically active sites. The maximum voltage of MnO2@Co3O4-MFC was 425 mV, the maximum stabilization time was 4 d. The maximum output power was 475 mW/m2, which was 2.24 times that of Co3O4-MFC (212 mW/m2) and 2.63 times of MnO2-MFC (180 mW/m2). The rod-like structure of MnO2 could effectively improve the ion flow efficiency and reduce the transfer resistance, and the point-like structure of Co3O4 can increase the specific surface area of the complex and provide more active sites.

Abstract:The relatively low microbial loading, slow extracellular electron transfer efficiency, and poor electrocatalytic activity at the anode interface of microbial fuel cells limit their power generation efficiency. Based on this, using the high electrochemical specific surface area, high porosity, facile loading, and flexible support of electrospinning, as well as the superior energy storage capability of MnO2, this work successfully constructed two distinct morphologies of carbon nanofiber-loaded manganese dioxide electrocatalysts. The effects of carbon nanofibers loaded nanoflower-shaped (CNF@MnO2-S) and nanorod-shaped (CNF@MnO2-R) manganese dioxide on the electrochemical performance of the anode, microbial fuel cells power generation and pollutant purification performance were comprehensively investigated. The impact of the two electrocatalysts on the anode biofilm was analyzed, revealing the mechanism for improving the performance of microbial fuel cells. The results shown that compared to pure carbon cloth and carbon nanofiber-modified carbon cloth, the CNF@MnO2-R modified carbon cloth anode exhibits the best power generation performance. The outstanding performance improvement of about 27.9% highest output voltage (0.645V), 27.9% maximum output power (821.549 mW m-2), 1.5 times and 2 times highest specific capacitance (5.93 mF cm-2), and 31.9% higher COD removal rate (84.35%) were achieved, compared to the pure carbon cloth anode. The performance improvement can be mainly attributed to the rough surface, high porosity, and excellent electrocatalytic performance of CNF@MnO2-R. It not only increases the electrochemical specific surface area and bio-affinity at the anode interface. Moreover, promotes microbial adhesion and reproduction, also regulates the electron transfer and information exchange process between the biofilm and the anode, thereby enhancing the power generation performance and organic matter removal rate of microbial fuel cells.

Abstract:The mechanism of ectopic adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) secretion was examined by studies on the effects of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), dexamethasone, interleukin (IL)-1 beta and 2, somatostatin, calcium ionophore A23187, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and 8-bromo-cAMP on pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) expression and ACTH secretion from a human small cell lung cancer cell line COR-L103. None of these agents except TPA and A23187 had any effect on ACTH secretion from the cell line in short (0-8 hrs) or long term (1-4 days) cultures. In long term cultures, 1-100 nM TPA stimulated ACTH secretion dose-dependently, whereas 500nM A23187 inhibited ACTH secretion completely. When the cells were incubated with 10nM TPA plus 500 nM A23187, the inhibitory action of A23187 on ACTH secretion was suppressed by TPA. These results suggest that the mechanisms of ACTH secretion by COR-L103 cells and normal pituitary cells are different.

Abstract:Manganese oxides are attractive catalyst candidates for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) given their natural abundance and low toxicity. alpha-MnO2, in particular, exhibits high ORR activity in an alkaline medium. The hybrid concept provides a way to obtain enhanced ORR performance and long-term durability through an optimized metal oxide-support interaction. Herein, we synthesized a carbon nanotube (CNT)-graphene-alpha-MnO2 hybrid in a hydrothermal reaction in which the MnO2 nanosheets were deposited on the interior and exterior surfaces of the CNT channels. The resultant hybrid displayed very high ORR activity that is only marginally less than the performance of a commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst and showed even better stability. The excellent ORR activity was attributed to two main factors, that is, the mesoporous architecture of the catalyst and the strong electron coupling between the encapsulated metal oxide and the support. We also showed that the preferential deposition of MnO2 nanosheets within the CNT channels provides enhanced ORR performance relative to deposition on the exterior surfaces of the channels only. This in turn demonstrates unequivocally the confinement effect that the CNT exerts on the encapsulated metal oxide component, which can be exploited as a route to enhanced ORR activity.

Abstract:A microbial fuel cell (MFC) was constructed with CNTs, 0.02gMnO2/CNTs and 0.03gMnO2/CNTs modified graphite anode prepared by coating for enhancing copper wastewater treatment. The SEM, XRD and FTIR results showed that MnO2/CNTs and CNTs were successfully attached to the graphite electrode, indicating that the electrode was modified successfully. The surface wettability test showed that the decrease of the contact angle of the modified anode led to the increase of hydrophilicity, which was more conducive to microbial adhesion. The surface contact angle of CNTs modified electrode was the smallest, which was 11.17°. The maximum output voltage, power density and copper removal rate of 0.03gMnO2/CNTs modified anode MFC were 0.67 V, 1044.21 mW/m2 and 98.93% respectively, which were 52.3%, 466.3% and 50.5% higher than those of unmodified anode. XPS results showed that the reduction products were Cu2O and Cu. Meanwhile,high throughput sequencing showed that CNTs and MnO2 could improve the richness and diversity of microbial community. MnO2/CNTs modified-anode accelerated the enrichment of electro-active bacteria such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can generate electricity from the oxidation of organic substrates using anodic exoelectrogenic bacteria and have great potential for harvesting electric energy from wastewater. Improving oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance at a neutral pH is needed for efficient energy production. Here we show a nitrogen doped (≈4 wt%) ionothermal carbon aerogel (NDC) with a high surface area, large pore volume, and hierarchical porosity, with good electrocatalytic properties for ORR in MFCs. The MFCs using NDC air cathodes achieved a high maximum power density of 2300 mW m-2 , which was 1.7 times higher than the most commonly used Pt/C air cathodes and also higher than most state-of-the-art ORR catalyst air cathodes. Rotating disk electrode measurements verified the superior electrocatalytic activity of NDC with an efficient four-electron transfer pathway (n=3.9). These findings highlight NDC as a better-performing and cost-efficient catalyst compared with Pt/C, making it highly viable for MFC applications.
