Abstract:Dynamic occlusal loading during mastication is clinically relevant in the design and functional assessment of dental restorations and removable dentures, and in evaluating temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The aim of this study was to develop a modelling framework to evaluate subject-specific dynamic occlusal loading during chewing and biting over the entire dental arch. Measurements of jaw motion were performed on one healthy male adult using low-profile electromagnetic field sensors attached to the teeth, and occlusal anatomy quantified using an intra-oral scanner. During testing, the subject chewed and maximally compressed a piece of rubber between both second molars, first molars, premolars and their central incisors. The occlusal anatomy, rubber geometry and experimentally measured rubber material properties were combined in a finite element model. The measured mandibular motion was used to kinematically drive model simulations of chewing and biting of the rubber sample. Three-dimensional dynamic bite forces and contact pressures across the occlusal surfaces were then calculated. Both chewing and biting on the first molars produced the highest bite forces across the dental arch, and a large amount of anterior shear force was produced at the incisors and the second molars. During chewing, the initial tooth-rubber contact evolved from the buccal sides of the molars to the lingual sides at full mouth closure. Low-profile electromagnetic field sensors were shown to provide a clinically relevant measure of jaw kinematics with sufficient accuracy to drive finite element models of occlusal loading during chewing and biting. The modelling framework presented provides a basis for calculation of physiological, dynamic occlusal loading across the dental arch.

Abstract:Occlusal force is an important parameter for evaluating the function of the occlusal system. Traditional occlusal forces can only be measured qualitatively. Here, we report a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor with high sensitivity and a wide measurement range for <i>in situ</i> occlusal force measurements through the articulating paper. The sensing layer of the flexible piezoresistive sensor is a 3D porous MXene composite aerogel, which is fabricated by vacuum freezing. The MXene piezoresistive sensor is composed of the interdigital electrodes, the sensing layer, the PI encapsulation layer, and an articulating paper encapsulation layer. The sensor shows perfect performance with high sensitivity (210.21 kPa<sup>-1</sup>), wide measurement range (∼420 kPa), and a fast response time (123 ms response time, 163 ms recovery time). The amplitude of the occlusal force, which varied with time, can be observed on the mobile phone through the wireless system with the Bluetooth module. This technique has broad application prospects in oral health. In this work, we propose a simple method and a new idea for manufacturing high-performance wearable bioelectronic sensors.

Abstract:A new flexible piezoelectric tactile sensor array based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film is proposed for measuring three-axis dynamic contact force distribution. The array consists of six tactile units arranged as a 3 x 2 matrix with spacing 8 mm between neighbor units. In each unit, a PVDF film is sandwiched between four square-shaped upper electrodes and one square-shaped lower electrode, forming four piezoelectric capacitors. A truncated pyramid bump is located above the four piezoelectric capacitors to improve force transmission. A three-axis contact force transmitted from the top of the bump will lead to the four piezoelectric capacitors underneath undergoing different charge changes, from which the normal and shear components of the force can be calculated. A series of dynamic tests have been carried out by exerting sinusoidal forces with amplitudes ranging from 0 to 0.5 N in the x-axis, 0 to 0.5 N in the y-axis, and 0 to 1.5 N in the z-axis, separately. The tactile units show good sensitivities with 14.93, 14.92, and 6.62 pC/N in the x-, y-, and z-axes, respectively. They can work with good linearity, relatively low coupling effect, high repeatability, and acceptable frequency response in the range of 5-400 Hz to both normal and shear load. In addition, dynamic three-axis force measurement has been conducted for all of the tactile units. The average errors between the applied and calculated forces are 10.68% +/- 6.84%. Furthermore, the sensor array can be easily integrated onto a curved surface, such as robotic and prosthetic hands, due to its excellent flexibility.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel flexible capacitive tactile sensor array for prosthetic hand gripping force measurement. The sensor array has 8 × 8 (= 64) sensing units, each sensing unit has a four-layered structure: two thick PET layers with embedded copper electrodes generates a capacitor, a PDMS film with line-structure used as an insulation layer, and a top PDMS bump layer to concentrate external force. The structural design, working principle, and fabrication process of this sensor array are presented. The fabricated tactile sensor array features high flexibility has a spatial resolution of 2 mm. This is followed by the characterization of the sensing unit for normal force measurement and found that the sensing unit has two sensitivities: 4.82 0/00/mN for small contact force and 0.23 0/00/mN for large gripping force measurements. Finally, the tactile sensor array is integrated into a prosthetic hand for gripping force measurement. Results showed that the developed flexible capacitive tactile sensor array could be utilized for tactile sensing and real-time contact force visualization for prosthetic hand gripping applications.

Abstract:A silicon piezoresistive stress sensor is developed to measure the three components of the orthodontic forces of a tooth in invisible aligners. The stress sensor chip consists of multiple piezoresistor rosettes, and is fixed on the tooth surface to measure the orthodontic force induced stresses. An inverse problem algorithm is established to reconstruct the orthodontic forces of the tooth from the measured stresses. A key thinning process is developed using chemical-mechanical polishing to thin the sensor chip from 650 to 100 , such that it can be accommodated to the limited space between the aligner and the tooth, without much influence on the orthodontic force. The ultra-thin thickness enables the sensor chip to be compliance with tooth deformation, and improves the stress measurement sensitivity as much as 40 times, making it capable of measuring small orthodontic force. The sensor design, fabrication, orthodontic stress measurement, and force reconstruction are given in details, and the experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of using miniaturized and ultra-thin sensors to determine the in vitro orthodontic forces.

Abstract:This paper presents a flexible capacitive tactile sensor array embedded with a truncated polydimethylsiloxane pyramid array as a dielectric layer. The proposed sensor array has been fabricated with 4 × 4 sensor units. The measurement ranges of forces in the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis are 0-0.5, 0-0.5, and 0-4 N, respectively. In the range of 0-0.5 N, the sensitivities of the sensor unit are 58.3%/N, 57.4%/N, and 67.2%/N in the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis, respectively. In the range of 0.5-4 N, the sensitivity in the z-axis is 7.7%/N. Three-axis force measurement has been conducted for all the sensor units. The average errors between the applied and calculated forces are 11.8% ± 6.4%. The sensor array has been mounted on a prosthetic hand. A paper cup and a cube are grasped by the prosthetic hand and the three-axis contact force is measured in real time by the sensor array. Results show that the sensor can capture the three-axis contact force image both in light and tight grasping. The proposed capacitive tactile sensor array can be utilized in robotics and prosthetic hand applications.
Study on Occlusion-induced Mechanical Force Distribution in Dental Pulp Using 3-D Modeling Based on Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:The dental pulp plays an important role in maintaining the functional status of the tooth. Proper masticatory force helped maintaining the dental pulp vitality. However, the force distributed into the dental pulp could not be directly measured. Currently available simulation models were single unit and/or unrealistic in shape and dimension. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel real geometry of whole teeth 3D model based on the CT scan system and conducted static structural analyses using the finite element analysis (FEA). The developed model of the mandibular first molar consisted of multicomponent of enamel, dentin and dental pulp. The masticatory loading condition for simulation was performed in three conditions at the average biting force of 54.3 MPa. The results showed that the average occlusal pressure did not cause failure of the tooth components as the max Von Mises stress did not exceed its ultimate strength. Simulation results revealed that the average normal stresses at the peaks of the dental pulp was only 0.003 MPa, which was less than 1% of that exerted on the enamel.

Abstract:This paper presents an analytical model to analyze the flexible capacitive tactile sensor array for normal force measurement. The tactile sensor array consists of six layers, including a bottom polyethylene terephthalate film, a lower copper plate, a polydimethylsiloxane film, an upper copper plate, a polyimide (PI) film, and a top PI bump, respectively. By simplifying the sensing unit into a two-layer structure, an analytical model is developed to study the normal force prediction. Finite element modeling (FEM) is conducted to analyze the deformation of the sensing unit, and is compared with the analytical model. Results show that analytical model predicted deformation matches well with the FEM analysis. The change of capacitance verse normal force is obtained, and can be utilized for accurate normal force measurement. Based on the established analytical model, the behaviors of the proposed sensor are analyzed by applying uneven force and shear force.
A Flexible Capacitive Tactile Sensor Array with High Scanning Speed for Distributed Contact Force Measurements

Abstract:This paper presents an 8×8 (=64) capacitive tactile sensor array with integrated four capacitance-digital-converter (CDC) scanning circuit for three-axis force measurement. For the structural design of the sensor array, the upper and lower electrodes generate four capacitors in one sensing unit and decompose the contact force into three-axis force components. To enhance the flexibility, a thinner PDMS bump (0.5 mm) and truncated pyramid dielectric layer with finer dimensions are utilized. To increase the scanning speed, we divide the sensor array into four regions and using four CDC circuits to simultaneously measure the capacitance changes of these regions. The sensor array is mounted onto a hand finger for grasping of a paper cup. Results showed that the sensor array can detect the distributed contact force at high scanning speed, thus could be utilized in robotic grasping applications.

Abstract:Bite force measurements are crucial in the realm of biomedical research, particularly in the areas of dentistry and orthodontic care. Various intraoral devices have been used to assess biting force, but each has limitations and drawbacks. Fiber optic sensors (FOSs) offer advantages such as electrical inertness, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and high sensitivity. Distributed fiber optic sensing allows an increase in the number of sensing points and can interrogate numerous reflections from scattering events within an optical fiber. We present four dental bites with heights of 6 mm, which enabled bilateral measurements. U-shaped sensors were prepared by embedding fibers into silicone by folding a single-mode fiber into four lines and multiplexing eight parallel nanoparticle-doped fibers. Dental bite models were created using two silicone materials (Sorta Clear 18 and Sorta Clear 40). The developed sensors were calibrated by applying weights up to 900 g, resulting in a linear response. Experiments were conducted to compare the efficacy of the dental bites. The collection of massive data was enabled by constructing a 2D map of the dental bites during multi-point sensing.

Numerical simulation on the biomechanical interactions of tooth/implant-supported system under various occlusal forces with rigid/non-rigid connections

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze the biomechanics in an implant/tooth-supported system under different occlusal forces with rigid/non-rigid connectors by adopting a 3D non-linear finite element (FE) approach. A 3D FE model containing one Frialit-2 implant splinted to the mandibular second premolar was constructed. Contact elements (frictional surface) were used to simulate the realistic interface condition within the implant system and the sliding keyway stress-breaker function. The stress distributions in the splinting system and dissimilar mobility between natural tooth and implant with rigid and non-rigid connectors were observed for six loading types. The simulated results indicated that the lateral occlusal forces significantly increased the implant (sigma(I, max)), alveolar bone (sigma(AB, max)) and prosthesis (sigma(P, max)) stress values when compared with the axial occlusal forces. The sigma(I, max) and sigma(AB, max) values did not exhibit significant differences regardless of the connector type used. However, the sigma(P, max) values with a non-rigid connection increased more than two times those of the rigid connection. The sigma(I, max), sigma(AB, max) and sigma(P, max) stress values were significantly reduced in centric or lateral contact situations once the occlusal forces on the pontic were decreased. Moreover, the vertical-tooth-to-implant displacement ratios with a non-rigid connection were 23 and 9.9 times that for axial and lateral loads, respectively, applied on the premolar. However, the compensated non-rigid connector capabilities were not significant when occlusal forces acted on the complete prosthesis. The non-rigid connector (keyway device) only significantly exploited its function when the occlusal forces acted on a natural tooth. Minimizing the occlusal loading force on the pontic area through occlusal adjustment procedures to redistribute stress in the maximum intercuspation or lateral working position for an implant/tooth-supported prosthesis is recommended.
Flexible capacitive pressure sensor array using acoustic-assisted fabrication of microstructures as surface and dielectric layers

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted considerable interests in the fields of intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces and health monitoring for their portability, flexibility and real-time sensing performance. The microstructures of dielectric layer significantly affect the sensing performance of capacitive pressure sensors, but the common methods to fabricate microstructures always need physical and/or chemical molds, thus may not suit for low-cost fabrication of sensors. The wavy-shaped microstructures on the surface of fluid can be generated with the excitation of standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs), which is suitable to be used as dielectric layers. Here, we developed a 6 × 6 flexible capacitive pressure sensor array with fingerprint-like surface cover layer and latticed dielectric layer. Both two layers were fabricated through the novel and rapid acoustic-assisted process. The fabricated capacitive sensor array exhibits high sensitivity of 28.8%/N for normal force loading, with spatial resolution of 1.5 mm. It has been successfully used to monitor the vibration of the Adam’s apple during swallowing and detecting the wrist activities in cycles. These studies demonstrate the great potential of the pressure sensor array with acoustically fabricated microstructures in wearable electronics for health monitoring.

Abstract:Flux core spheromak sustainment by electrostatic helicity injection is studied in resistive MHD. The geometry has magnetized electrodes at the ends held at a potential difference V. For V>V(c) the central current column is kink unstable. The nonlinear state with V just above V(c) has a large volume of flux surfaces, with rotational transform provided by the helical kinking of the column. As V increases the kink becomes stronger, the tori are destroyed, and the field lines exhibit chaotic scattering. The distribution of field line lengths L, related to confinement and parallel current density, is studied. At larger V or larger Lundquist number S, a limit cycle appears.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Measurement of bite force plays a crucial role in assessment of the masticatory system. With a growing interest in detecting occlusal irregularities, bite force sensors have garnered attention in the biomedical field. This study aimed to introduce a hydrogel bite force sensor, based on hydroxyethyl-cellulose-fructose-water (HEC-F-water), for premolar and molar teeth, and to evaluate it using optical profilometry, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Instron Tension testing system, with 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins at top, bottom, right, and left. MATERIAL AND METHODS We fabricated 20 HEC-F-water hydrogel samples sized with surface of 1×1 cm, with 2 different widths - 1 mm and 5 mm. The samples were characterized using optical profilometry and FTIR and their electrical characteristics were determined using an impedance analyzer. Aluminum (Al) electrodes, fabricated using Cutting Plotter, were used to form a HEC-F-water-based transducer, which was used for bite force sensing. The Instron tensile testing system was employed, utilizing 3D printed models of the upper and lower jaw, to simulate biting. Forces in the range between 40 N and 540 N were exerted upon the transducer, and the output change in the electrical signal was measured. RESULTS The study determined the transfer function between bite force and capacitance. The fabricated sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 3.98 pF/N, an input range of 500 N, output range of 2 nF, and accuracy of 95.9%. CONCLUSIONS This study introduces an edible bite force sensor employing an edible hydrogel as a dielectric, presenting a novel avenue in the development of edible sensorics in dentistry.

Abstract:Purpose Orthodontic tooth movement is affected by bite forces generated from the masticatory system. This study aims to study three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the individualized functional masticatory system and explore its application in orthodontics. Methods An individualized masticatory system model containing the craniomaxilla, mandible, 4 pairs of primary masticatory muscles and complete dentition, including roots and precise dental crowns, was developed using 3D images from spiral computed tomography and digital casts. By registering global coordinates and using data transformation, individual movement data for mandibular opening, lateral excursion and protrusion were recorded with an Arcus Digma system and applied to this model to simulate the functional movements of the mandible. Using the finite element method, deformations and displacement of the masticatory muscles were simulated along with the mandibular movements. Under individualized muscle loading, the bite forces of the lower incisors with the orthodontic bite plate were analyzed. Results Individualized mandibular movements were simulated, and the performance of the masticatory muscles along with the mandibular movements was measured. The bite force generated on the lower incisors with different thicknesses and the orientations of the orthodontic bite plate were acquired. Conclusion An individualized 3D masticatory system model was constructed using advanced 3D data processing software that integrated 3D images from different sources. Individualized mandibular movement and masticatory muscle performance were simulated using this model. The analysis of the bite force generated on the lower incisors with the orthodontic bite plate suggested that a thickness of 3 mm may be appropriate for clinical use.

Abstract:Objective: To construct a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model and analyze the biomechanical characteristics during mandibular second molar mesialization using customized lingual appliances and mini-implant. Methods: One adult student volunteer from The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University with lower left first molar extraction was selected. After CT scanning, Mimics, Geomagic, ANSYS were employed to develop a 3D finite element model including customized lingual brackets, stainless steel lingual arch wire, buccal buckles, lower dentition, periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone. Four different loading methods (1. the force of 1.470 N loaded at the lingual side only; 2, 3, 4. the forces of 0.490, 0.735 and 0.980 N loaded at both buccal and lingual sides, respectively.) were included. The initial displacements of the lower second molar and stress distribution in the periodontal ligaments were analyzed. Results: More uniform stress distributions in the periodontal membrane of mandibular left second molar were found when the mesial force were loaded at both buccal and lingual sides than the force loaded at lingual side only. More inclination of the second molar was observed when force loaded at both sides than at lingual side only. With the values of the force increased, the mesial inclination potential of the second molar, the initial movement of the second molar and the stress distribution in the periodontal membrane increased. Under the force of 0.735 N at both buccal and lingual sides, mesially inclined initial displacements of the mandibuar second molar were observed and the stress values of von Mises was in the suitable area. Conclusions: Less second molar rotation was found when the force loaded at both buccal and lingual sides than loaded at lingual side only. However, force loaded at both sides would increase the measial inclination potential of the second molar.

Abstract:Precise multi-axis operation is essentially required in orthodontics for tooth movement. Despite the development of flexible multi-dimensional force sensors that have effectively perceived multi-dimensional forces, they still face the challenge of simultaneously 3D force and moment in a single flexible force sensor. Six-dimensional force perception can successfully operate objects that critically rely on directional tracking and accurate monitoring of complex multi-axis stimuli. To realize the integration of sensing units with the perception of six-dimensional force under even a soft touch, we design a flexible six-dimensional force sensor with tenon-and-mortise interlocking structures inspired by traditional Chinese ancient architecture. This unique structure enables conjunction of deformation, which can be studied and decoded by Deep Neural Networks (DNN) with six-dimensional force, including forces and rotating moments in the x, y, and z directions. This soft sensor with minimal size (7 × 7 × 7 mm3) and high detection accuracy (the DNN error is below 10−4) can be used in orthodontic treatment for precise correction with a full collection of orthodontic force. Finite element analysis on stress distribution of mandibular alveolar mucosa under linear occlusal complete denture

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the stress distribution on the mandibular mucosa under dynamic linear occlusial complete denture. Methods: CT-CAD-FEA system was used to set up 3-D finite element analysis models of maxillae,mandible and complete denture. 3-D FEA was used to study the stress distribution on the mandibular alveolar mucosa under functional linear and anatomic occlusial complete denture. Results: (1) At centric occlusaion,there was no obvious difference about the stress distribution between the linear and anatomic occlusial complete denture. But at the molar area,lingual stress was larger than buccal stress. (2) At lateral occlusion,the stress on the working-side molar area of linear occlusion was less than the one of anatomic occlusion. At the buccal side of the working-side molar area,the stress distribution of the linear occlusion was much comprehensive than the one of the anatomic occlusion. Conclusion: During the masticatory function period,the stress distribution on the mandibular alveolar mucosa under linear occlusal complete denture is more even and more comprehensive than under anatomic one.

Abstract:Background: Malocclusion is one of the three major oral diseases which affect the quality of human life and mental health. The fixed appliance technology is most commonly used to treat malocclusion. Nowadays, the designs of orthodontic appliances mostly rely on doctors’ experience. It is significant to study orthodontic forces to improve the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment and alleviate the sufferings of the patients. The orthodontic force measurement is the fundamental of the research on the orthodontic forces. Objective: This paper attempts to present a general summarization of recent studies about orthodontic force measuring devices and introduce their respective characteristics and development including their components and experimental steps. Methods: This paper reviews various representative studies related to the orthodontic force measuring devices. The research topics discussed the components of recent orthodontic force measuring devices, experimental steps, experimental materials, applications and the characteristic of the presented orthodontic force measuring devices. Results: The advantages and disadvantages of different types of the orthodontic force measuring devices are discussed, and the structural characteristics are concluded. In addition, the main problems in its development are analyzed, the solutions to the issues and the current and future research on orthodontic force measuring device are discussed. Conclusion: Orthodontic force measuring device plays an important role in the orthodontic measurement. The orthodontic force measurement result can help orthodontic doctors improve the effectiveness of the orthodontic treatment. And further improvements are needed in the aspects of experimental dentition model built by biomimetic materials, the rebuilt of the real biological environment of human mouth and portability of the orthodontic force measuring devices. More studies on the orthodontic force measuring device should be conducted.
