Abstract:BackgroundThere has been a global rise in the use of natural health products (NHPs). Proper regulation of NHPs is pivotal to ensure good quality control standards, enhance consumers' safety and facilitate their integration into modern healthcare systems. There is scarcity of published data on the prevalence of NHPs usage among the general Kuwaiti population. Hence, this study was designed to determine awareness, patterns of use, general attitude and information requirements about NHPs among the public in Kuwait.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed using a pretested self-administered questionnaire on a sample of 1300 Kuwaiti individuals, selected from six governorates in Kuwait using a multistage stratified clustered sampling. Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used in data analysis.ResultsThe response rate was 90.2%. NHPs were thought to be herbal remedies by most of participants (63.5%), followed by vitamins/minerals (40.5%), traditional medicines (21.1%), probiotics (14.9%), amino acids and essential fatty acids (7.2%), and homeopathic medicines (5.6%). NHPs usage was reported by 71.4% (95% CI: 68.8-74.0%) of respondents, and mostly associated with females (OR: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.44-2.51). Herbal remedies were the most commonly used (41.3%; 95% CI: 38.5-44.2%). The most common reasons for using NHPs were to promote and maintain health and to prevent illness and build immune system. Family members and/or friends and mass media were the main sources for providing information about NHPs. About 18% of consumers have experienced a side effect due to using a NHP. Attitudes toward NHPs were generally positive; with more than 75% of participants believing that the Ministry of Health in Kuwait should regulate the claims made by the manufacturers of NHPs and it is important to talk to a medical doctor or a pharmacist prior to using NHPs. Most of the respondents showed increased interest to acquire knowledge about different types of information related to NHPs.ConclusionsThe prevalence of use of NHPs among Kuwaiti population is high. The present findings have major public health policy implications for Kuwait. Therefore, there is an apparent need to establish effective health education programs and implement better and more regulated NHPs use policies in Kuwait.

Abstract:Backgrounds: Enhancing maternal health quality is a concern among researchers globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one factor in women's health and empowerment is the rate of use of various contraceptive techniques. The WHO defines unmet contraceptive need as the discrepancy between a woman's desire to delay or cease childbearing and lack of contraception use to achieve this goal. Our study was designed to measure the unmet need for family planning and contraceptive use among married Saudi women attending primary healthcare centers in Alahsa, Saudi Arabia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out using multistage cluster stratified sampling. The study included all married Saudi women aged 18-49 attending primary health centers. A structured questionnaire from the United States Agency for International Development Demographic and Health Surveys Methodology was used. Data analysis was performed using the statistical software IBM SPSS version 29 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results: In all, 430 individuals were included. The participants' ages ranged from 19 to 49 years (33.4 ± 7 years). Among them, 50 (11.6%) were pregnant. Among those who were not pregnant, 268 (62.3%) were using a method of contraception. Based on the definitions adopted in this study, 90 (20.9%) had unmet needs for family planning, and 340 (79.1%) had their needs met. The total demand for family planning was estimated to be 83.2%. The percentage of demand for family planning satisfied by a modern contraceptive method was 46.9%. Conclusion: Although Alahsa has a lower unmet need rate (20%) than other cities in Saudi Arabia, it remains notably higher than the average rate in Northern African and Western Asian countries, which is 10.9%. A number of factors, including nulliparity and having more than two children, were associated with unmet contraceptive needs. The majority of women who did not use contraceptives had concerns about the side effects and inconvenience of use.

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the contraceptive preferences of women based on their age and to track changes in these preferences over time. Methods: This was an observational, retrospective cross-sectional study. Data from 2742 patients were evaluated for this study. The patient group of the first 4 years was classified as Group I (n=1371) and the last 4 years was classified as Group II (n=1371). The preferred contraception methods between the groups and their changes across the years were examined. Results: Coitus interruptus was found to be the prevailing contraceptive method across all age groups, with 304 (70.9%) in 18-24 age group; 1314 (65.4%) in 25-40 age group; and 148 (48.8%) in 41-53 age group using this method. Breastfeeding rates were also analyzed across age groups, revealing that 11% of patients aged 18-24 years, 5% of patients aged 25-40 years, and 1.7% of patients aged 41-53 years were breastfeeding. Among these patients, 114 (74.5%) were not using any contraception method, while coitus interruptus remained the most popular choice. Conclusion: It was determined that there are many couples who do not have sufficient knowledge regarding family planning and birth control in our country. At the same time, the use of birth control methods has increased due to the increase in the education level of women and easier access to sexual health services.

Abstract:Contraception information and services are the basis of the health and human rights of everyone. Young girls who become pregnant are at greater risk for problems arising from early child deliveries. Contraception in older women likewise results in increased risk. It was found from the particulars of contraception use that the male partner has a great deal of influence, and that the same is true of the perspectives and experiences of the people surrounding his partner, the expectations of her family and her desire for more children. In Thailand, there are ethnic groups of numerous tribes, among whom are the Karen, who make up the largest of any such group. The Karens have a low rate of contraception use and low incomes with reduced resources. Thus, family planning is an important key in reducing their population growth and the impact on their economy, environment and development. The purpose of this study was to explore the determining influence of contraception among minority women in Thailand in the form of descriptive qualitative research. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. The research showed that the use of contraceptive services by Karen women was restricted by the culture, beliefs and social conditions characteristic of their ethnic origin. The husband and extended family influenced their contraceptive decisions. The prevailing belief was that contraception is the duty of women. Some women used herbs for contraception. They had difficulty communicating when receiving contraceptive services. Karen people have little income; so they cannot afford expenses related to contraceptive services requiring them to pay for travel costs. Furthermore, the road conditions make the trip awfully difficult, and their houses are situated far from the hospitals. In conclusion, determining the influence of birth control among minority women in Thailand must be based on their beliefs, society and ability to access health services.
Gap in knowledge of health benefits and risks of combined oral contraceptives among Lebanese women

Abstract:Abstract Background Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCPs) are among the most commonly used forms of contraception, but they are associated with several health benefits and risks. This study aims to determine the gap in knowledge of the underlying health benefits and risks of OCPs among Lebanese women and to identify the factors that might influence their beliefs. Methods A questionnaire was completed by 817 Lebanese women aged 18–64 years old and assessed sociodemographic details, medical information, contraceptive practices, knowledge of underlying health benefits and risks, and information needs related to OCPs. Results Among the total participants, 41.5% of women reported using OCPs at some point in their lives yet 46.6% denied receiving information about their benefits and 48% denied receiving information about their risks. The mean total OCP knowledge score was 5.70 out of 25, the mean OCP risk knowledge score was 4.09 out of 15, and the mean OCP benefit knowledge score was 0.77 out of 6. Sociodemographic factors associated with greater total knowledge, risk knowledge and benefit knowledge included OCP usage, being a student, confidence in one’s knowledge and satisfaction with one’s information. Both the total and risk knowledge scores were found to be higher in women who found that receiving information related to OCPs was important. Finally, participants who lived in central governates had greater total knowledge scores, whereas those with higher levels of education and a family history of endometrial cancer demonstrated better benefit knowledge. Conclusions This study highlighted the poor knowledge of health benefits and risks associated with OCP use among Lebanese women and the associated sociodemographic factors that might influence their beliefs.

Abstract:Background Practicing and following a Pregnancy Prevention Program (PPP) is crucial to prevent isotretinoin-induced teratogenicity. Our study aims to assess the current practice of dermatologists about PPP when prescribing oral isotretinoin and the compliance of the patients toward contraceptive methods. Methods The research used a cross-sectional design and utilized a probability sampling method in Saudi Arabia. An online self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data that included female participants who were previously treated/being treated with isotretinoin for acne. Data was analyzed using SPSS (IBM Inc., Armonk, New York). Results Our study examined 359 female patients receiving isotretinoin treatment. Isotretinoin was primarily used for severe nodular forms of acne resistant to regular treatment 229 (63.8%). Regarding awareness, 326 (90.8%) were familiar with isotretinoin's teratogenic effects, and 112 (31.2%) were familiar with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority's Pregnancy Prevention Program. Physicians were among the most prevalent information sources 254 (71%). In terms of isotretinoin usage, 227 (63.2%) had one course. Regarding contraceptive practice, 167 (46.5%) were informed about the necessity of a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment, and 29 (50.9%) of those who received more than two courses had good awareness. Conclusion The study identified a notable awareness gap among the participants, as over two-thirds demonstrated a poor awareness level regarding isotretinoin. A significant proportion of participants were informed about the importance of contraceptive practices, including the necessity of a negative pregnancy test before, during, and after treatment.

Abstract:Objective Pandemics have affected many people's social and emotional lives. Conception planning, contraceptive usage, and pregnancy intentions are activities with minimal research. This study is the first to evaluate how the COVID‐19 pandemic influenced reproductive plans and contraceptive use among women during the pandemic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2022. Methods A cross‐sectional survey was conducted by sending an online questionnaire to married women from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included demographics, personal obstetrics information, changes in pregnancy intentions owing to the COVID‐19 pandemic, and questions about contraceptive usage. Qualitative data were presented as frequencies, and a χ2 test was performed to determine the relationships among the variables. Results A total of 639 women enrolled in the study; most participants were 25–34 years old, and most indicated they changed their reproductive intentions during the pandemic (49%). Family planning accounted for 25.8% of participants who changed their reproductive intentions. Only 17.5% changed their choices because of fear of the COVID‐19 impact. The percentage of women using contraception was significantly reduced during the lockdown, to 36.8%. Oral contraceptive pills were the most frequently used method during the curfew period (17.5%). Conclusion The COVID‐19 lockdown affected the reproductive intentions of most women in Jeddah, and it significantly reduced contraceptive use.

Abstract:Background: Contraceptive methods play a vital role in family planning and has been established a cornerstone in reducing maternal and infant mortality rate. Family planning is encouraged as a tool to address the reproductive health needs of men and women, as well as the pivotal problem in regard to rapid population increase. The total fertility rate in Uttarakhand is 2.1 children per woman with couple protection rate of 53%, according to National Family Health Services. Aims and Objectives: We aimed to assess the knowledge regarding contraceptives and its usage among married women of reproductive age group in urban area. Materials and Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study using a quantitative survey questionnaire of duration 5 months. Women in reproductive age-group (15–45 years) were included in the study. A total of 102 study participants were enrolled. Results: Mean ± standard deviation of study participants was 29.09 ± 5.04. "Knowledge" questions had over 90% of correct responses. The attitude of study participants toward contraceptive usage was mostly favorable. Contraception usage practice was fairly good. Conclusion: There is a need to promote positive attitude among the general public so that they can create an environment to raise awareness among the general public regarding contraception.

Abstract:Present methods for assessment of the attack phase of malaria eradication are inadequate, particularly lacking any objective parasitological criteria of success. On the basis of previous observations and development of theory, the authors first postulate that the effects of complete interruption of transmission should, ideally, include a regular progressive decrease of falciparum parasite rates in the ratios of 1: 0.4 in 6 months, 1: 0.16 in 12 months and 1: 0.026 in 24 months. Analysis of a series of programmes in which complete interruption of transmission is known to have been achieved shows that this postulate is valid, and that it is not materially upset by strain differences of parasites or by differences in the ages of the subjects examined. Vivax rates appear to fall at approximately the same rate; the rarity of data for vivax malaria makes firm conclusions unsure, but the postulate can be extended to rates which are predominantly due to falciparum infection but include some admixture of other species. A second, arbitrary, postulate is made that the slowest acceptable rate of fall in 12 months should be in a ratio not less than 1: 0.22, which would secure ultimate eradication in about one-third more time than the ideal fall; on this basis statistical standards are set up for assurance of confidence that the minimum rate is exceeded. Slower rates of fall are then related to reproduction rates causing them, the findings being illustrated graphically and by mathematical theory.
