Abstract:Present methods for assessment of the attack phase of malaria eradication are inadequate, particularly lacking any objective parasitological criteria of success. On the basis of previous observations and development of theory, the authors first postulate that the effects of complete interruption of transmission should, ideally, include a regular progressive decrease of falciparum parasite rates in the ratios of 1: 0.4 in 6 months, 1: 0.16 in 12 months and 1: 0.026 in 24 months. Analysis of a series of programmes in which complete interruption of transmission is known to have been achieved shows that this postulate is valid, and that it is not materially upset by strain differences of parasites or by differences in the ages of the subjects examined. Vivax rates appear to fall at approximately the same rate; the rarity of data for vivax malaria makes firm conclusions unsure, but the postulate can be extended to rates which are predominantly due to falciparum infection but include some admixture of other species. A second, arbitrary, postulate is made that the slowest acceptable rate of fall in 12 months should be in a ratio not less than 1: 0.22, which would secure ultimate eradication in about one-third more time than the ideal fall; on this basis statistical standards are set up for assurance of confidence that the minimum rate is exceeded. Slower rates of fall are then related to reproduction rates causing them, the findings being illustrated graphically and by mathematical theory.
Knowledge, practices, and barriers to access of emergency contraceptive pills in married women and men: a multicenter clinic-based cross-sectional study from Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract:Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) are significantly underutilized in many parts of the world, especially in South-Asia. Within Pakistan, despite the population surge, the utilization of ECPs remains alarmingly low. Abstract:According to the WHO, all clients should have access to a range of contraceptive methods, including at least one short-term, one long-term, one permanent, and one emergency method of contraception. While there are data on the contraceptive method mix available for many low- and middle-income countries, there are limited data on emergency contraception (EC). This is likely due to some surveys not routinely collecting this information, how survey questions are asked, dual method use, and/or low levels of reported use of EC pill (ECP). Even with low reported use in surveys, contraceptive social marketing statistics from DKT International. show a trend in recent years of increasing product sales of ECPs. To understand a more complete scope of ECP use, we use Pakistan as a case study and analyze Pakistan's Demographic Health Survey (DHS) surveys and Pakistan's Contraceptives Logistics Management Systems. Based on commodities dispensed data for ECPs in 2021, about 0.4 percent of all married women in Pakistan use ECPs. While there is currently a small proportion of women, it is growing and the use of ECPs is not zero as indicated by the DHS. Therefore, where available, countries should review their health management information systems data alongside survey data for ECP use.

Abstract:Backgrounds: Enhancing maternal health quality is a concern among researchers globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one factor in women's health and empowerment is the rate of use of various contraceptive techniques. The WHO defines unmet contraceptive need as the discrepancy between a woman's desire to delay or cease childbearing and lack of contraception use to achieve this goal. Our study was designed to measure the unmet need for family planning and contraceptive use among married Saudi women attending primary healthcare centers in Alahsa, Saudi Arabia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out using multistage cluster stratified sampling. The study included all married Saudi women aged 18-49 attending primary health centers. A structured questionnaire from the United States Agency for International Development Demographic and Health Surveys Methodology was used. Data analysis was performed using the statistical software IBM SPSS version 29 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results: In all, 430 individuals were included. The participants' ages ranged from 19 to 49 years (33.4 ± 7 years). Among them, 50 (11.6%) were pregnant. Among those who were not pregnant, 268 (62.3%) were using a method of contraception. Based on the definitions adopted in this study, 90 (20.9%) had unmet needs for family planning, and 340 (79.1%) had their needs met. The total demand for family planning was estimated to be 83.2%. The percentage of demand for family planning satisfied by a modern contraceptive method was 46.9%. Conclusion: Although Alahsa has a lower unmet need rate (20%) than other cities in Saudi Arabia, it remains notably higher than the average rate in Northern African and Western Asian countries, which is 10.9%. A number of factors, including nulliparity and having more than two children, were associated with unmet contraceptive needs. The majority of women who did not use contraceptives had concerns about the side effects and inconvenience of use.

Abstract:Introduction The decline in fertility is one of the major problems worldwide that could affect family structure. Many studies have been conducted to assess attitudes toward fertility and childbearing around the world, but there's a lack of research about that in Saudi Arabia (SA). The study aims to assess women's attitudes toward fertility and childbearing in SA and to investigate its association with sociodemographic, medical, and psychological factors. Objectives Aim of the Study: The purpose of the study is to assess women's attitudes toward fertility and childbearing in Saudi Arabia and to investigate its association with sociodemographic, medical and psychological variables. Specific Objectives: 1. To assess women's attitudes toward fertility and childbearing in Saudi Arabia. 2. To investigate association between attitudes toward childbearing with sociodemographic characteristics in Saudi Arabia. 3. To investigate association between attitudes toward childbearing with medical and psychiatric history in Saudi Arabia. 4. To investigate association between attitudes toward childbearing with the childbearing preferences in Saudi Arabia. Methods This cross-sectional study of a convenient sample of 2172 women in SA in Dec 2022 and Jan 2023. Data were collected through a survey link that contains:1)Sociodemographic data, 2) medical and psychiatric history, 3) childbearing preference and 4) the Arabic version of the Attitudes toward Fertility and Childbearing Scale (AFCS). Data were analyzed by SPSS 25 ;We described the variables in means ± SD or percentage as appropriate. Student's t-test and ANOVA were performed to analyze differences between the components and background characteristics. Results Individuals in the age group of 18-25 years (25.54± 9.08, p<0.001), unmarried (25.23 ± 8.87, p<0.001), and diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder (24.76 ±9.51, p<0.002) scored lower in importance of future of childbearing. In terms of hindrance at present and childbearing preparation, individuals in the age group of 18-25 years (25.66 ± 8.66, p<0.001) (18.53 ± 5.08, p<0.001) respectively, unmarried (25.71± 8.58, p<0.001) (18.46 ± 5.08, p<0.001) respectively, and students (25.92 ± 8.82, p<0.001) (18.55 ± 5.15, p=0.001) respectively were more likely to score high. Participants who had not made a decision about having children (9.36±3.32, p<0.001) scored lower in the female identity domain. Conclusions In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that the younger age group (18-25 years) and those with psychiatric illnesses scored lower in the importance for future of childbearing compared to women of older age group (36-49 years ) and those without psychiatric illnesses. Abstract:Background: Contraceptive utilization is a practice that helps individuals or couples to avoid unwanted pregnancies. This study aimed to assess to explore the knowledge and practice of emergency contraception among women with induced abortion in Sikkim. Objective: To explore the knowledge, attitude, and barriers to the practice of emergency contraception among women with induced abortion in Sikkim. Methods: In this study, 280 women between the ages of 15 and 45 years who had a history of induced abortion participated. The research is conducted at Central Referral Hospital, Tadong, Gangtok, Sikkim to learn about attitudes about and obstacles to using emergency contraception among women who had induced abortions. Results: Out of the total, 78% of respondents have knowledge about unprotected intercourse or a failure of the contraceptive method, and 21.5% of respondents have no knowledge about it. 75% of respondents have a positive attitude, and 25% of respondents have a negative attitude. The participants experienced adverse reactions such as nausea/vomiting, and 53% of respondents experienced excessive bleeding. Conclusion: The present study concluded that information about EC is not sufficiently present among the women living in Sikkim. They lack information about the dosage of EC, usage timing as well as its impact. The awareness programs will help to educate the females more about contraceptives and to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

Abstract:The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that complications related to pregnancy and childbirth affect approximately 300 million women in developing countries, causing both acute and chronic illnesses. Direct obstetric complications such as hemorrhage, sepsis, hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, obstructed and prolonged labor, and unsafe abortion account for approximately 75% of maternal deaths. This study aimed to assess the perceptions and attitudes towards pregnancy danger signs among women of childbearing age in the Al-Baha Region, Saudi Arabia. A descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted using simple random sampling to select 446 pregnant women. After outlining the study's goal and ensuring confidentiality, data were gathered through a pre-tested, well-designed questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Excel and SPSS version 28. The assessment of the study participants about perceptions of pregnancy danger signs revealed that many were aware of signs such as bleeding, abdominal pain, and lack of fetal movement, indicating a comprehensive understanding of potential pregnancy complications. The study participants exhibited good knowledge and relatively positive attitudes towards pregnancy danger signs. However, a significant fraction showed negative attitudes and insufficient knowledge, suggesting room for improvement in maternal health literacy. The study also found a significant relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge.Most participants had good knowledge and perceptions about pregnancy danger signs, and their attitudes were relatively positive. However, there is a need to increase awareness and improve attitudes towards pregnancy danger signs among women in the Al-Baha Region.

Abstract:Background: Oocyte cryopreservation is used for fertility preservation, medical reasons, and social reasons to overcome physiological decline in fertility with age. There was no research to find the knowledge, attitude, and perception of women regarding oocyte cryopreservation in our region. This study thus aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of women of reproductive age in Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, regarding fertility and elective oocyte cryopreservation. Methods: An Arabic-language online survey was conducted over six months targeting women aged 18-45 years in the Al-Qassim region. A total of 612 participants completed the questionnaire, which covered topics such as reproductive aspirations, knowledge of fertility, knowledge of elective oocyte cryopreservation, and concerns regarding fertility preservation. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0 (Released 2012; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Results: The majority of participants (47.1%) were aged 18-25 years. Participants' perceptions towards fertility preservation and social egg freezing were mixed, indicating varying levels of awareness about fertility issues. A statistically significant relationship was found between education level and knowledge of oocyte cryopreservation (p-value=0.004). Women with higher education levels (bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees) demonstrated significantly greater knowledge (p-value=0.004) about oocyte cryopreservation compared to those with lower education levels. The study highlights the influence of educational attainment on knowledge of oocyte cryopreservation. Conclusion: These findings align with broader trends in health education, suggesting that higher educational attainment correlates with better fertility health literacy. Enhancing fertility health literacy through educational programs may lead to more proactive health behaviours and better awareness about available assisted reproductive technologies.

Abstract:Background: This study aims to evaluate pregnant women's knowledge of antenatal ultrasound in Saudi Arabia and its correlation with demographic factors like age and education to enhance prenatal care. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in six Saudi Arabian hospitals, involving 22 questions split between sociodemographic information and knowledge of antenatal ultrasound. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the participants' demographics and responses. Additionally, inferential statistics were employed to analyze the relationships and differences among the study variables. Results: Among the 531 pregnant women in the study, most demonstrated a good understanding of antenatal ultrasound, identifying its various uses. Specifically, they recognized its roles in evaluating fetal growth (82.5%), placental location (81.7%), amniotic fluid volume (67%), and fetal morphology (65%), predicting the delivery date (79%), and determining the baby's sex (89%). A majority viewed ultrasound as important (89.3%), safe (82.3%), and tolerable (76.3%) for prenatal care. Additionally, 66.7% felt adequately informed, mainly through clinical staff and doctors. Younger age, lower education, lack of prior ultrasound experience, and first pregnancy were linked to lower knowledge. Approximately 65% were uncertain about the nonionizing radiation properties of ultrasound. Conclusions: The study found that while most pregnant women in Saudi Arabia understand the objectives of antenatal ultrasonography, there are gaps in their knowledge about its nonionizing properties. Younger age, lower education, lack of prior ultrasound experience, and first pregnancy contribute to lower knowledge.

Abstract:BackgroundSexual and reproductive health (SRH), a basic right for women worldwide, is infrequently researched in countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). No empirical studies of SRH among Saudi women exist. This protocol describes a study to explore the SRH knowledge, information-seeking behaviour and attitudes of Saudi female university students.Methods/DesignThis study will administer a questionnaire survey to female students at 13 universities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was developed following a literature search to identify relevant content, with psychometrically tested tools used when available. The content layout and the wording and order of the questions were designed to minimize the risk of bias. The questionnaire has been translated into Arabic and piloted in preparation for administration to the study sample. Ethical approval for the study has been granted (reference no. QMREC2012/54). After questionnaire administration, the data will be collated, analysed and reported anonymously. The findings will be published in compliance with reporting guidelines for survey research.DiscussionThis study will be the first to provide fundamental information concerning Saudi females university students SRH knowledge and information needs.

Abstract:BackgroundIn India every year, a large number of pregnancies are unplanned resulting in unsafe abortion. This has tremendous implications both on health and survival of women. Usage of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) could be a solution provided the usage is as per guidelines and social issues do not cause objections.AimThis study was done to assess the awareness and attitudes regarding ECPs.MethodsData were collected using self-administered questionnaire from the university students.ResultsOut of 449 students, 384(85.5 %) had heard about ECPs. The commonest source of information was television 299(77.9 %). Only 128(33.3 %) students knew that ECPs do not help in prevention of STDs. 209(54.4 %) participants knew the correct time frame for taking ECPs. 109(28.4 %) were unaware of its side effects. Only 149(33.2 %) had received reproductive health education (RHE) in the past. The awareness level of students about ECPs was moderate among 231(60.2 %) participants. Awareness was significantly more among males (p = 0.013), students with science background (p = 0.001) and those who had RHE previously (p = 0.043). 219(57 %) had average level of perception toward ECPs. 254(66.2 %) participants favored prescription before procuring ECPs from drug stores. 261(68 %) participants favored information about ECPs to be given in educational institutions, and a majority, 186(48.4 %), said they would recommend ECPs to their friends. Average-to-good perception about ECPs was seen in significantly greater proportion of females (p = 0.034).ConclusionRHE is must at educational institutions so as to promote awareness and to remove misconceptions about ECPs among youth. This would help users in preventing unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions.

Abstract:<span> The study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with knowledge and use of the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) among ever-married women in Bangladesh. The study was based on a secondary dataset of the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Complete (weighted) data of 17,592 women aged 15–49 years were analysed. The prevalence of having knowledge and use of the ECP among ever-married women in Bangladesh was 13.6% and 1.8%, respectively. Administrative region and type of residence (urban or rural), household wealth index, educational level (of both the woman and her spouse), spouse's occupation, number of living children, weight, current use of contraception and a history of pregnancy termination were positively associated with knowledge and use of the ECP. A large proportion of Bangladeshi women of reproductive age had a lack of knowledge and use of the ECP. Nationwide reproductive health education programmes may improve the situation.</span>
Knowledge, Awareness, Attitudes and Practices toward Perimenopausal Symptoms among Saudi Females

Abstract:Women's knowledge about perimenopause plays a crucial role in shaping their perception of related illnesses, influencing coping strategies, treatment adherence, and the overall management of this life stage. This cross-sectional study assessed the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding perimenopause among 409 Saudi women attending primary healthcare centers. Participants completed a structured questionnaire addressing demographic data, awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to perimenopause. While 75.3% of the participants were aware of perimenopause, only 17.4% could identify more than 10 out of 20 perimenopause symptoms. Commonly recognized symptoms included menstrual irregularity (67.7%), mood swings (66.0%), and mood fluctuations (50.4%). Only 23.0% had optimal knowledge about perimenopause complications. Additionally, 73.3% had not consulted a doctor for perimenopause-related issues. An analysis of the overall knowledge score showed a mean (SD) = 14.82 (5.64) out of 34. The level of knowledge was independently associated with a higher educational level, more frequent perimenopause symptoms, and regular doctor visits. This study reveals high awareness but insufficient knowledge among Saudi women regarding perimenopause symptoms and complications associated with higher perimenopause morbidity and a lack of engagement with healthcare professionals. It underscores the need for early and continued education on perimenopause, improved doctor–patient communication, and specific interventions to boost knowledge and attitudes toward perimenopause.

Abstract:This study aimed to comprehensively assess the knowledge, awareness, and misconceptions regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 600 women aged 18–55 from various regions across the country. The findings revealed moderate overall STI knowledge, with gaps in understanding transmission routes (31.7%), recognizing symptoms (40.8%), and awareness of prevention methods (35.2%). Prevalent misconceptions included the belief that STIs can spread through casual contact (38%), only individuals with multiple partners are at risk (30%), and STIs are always symptomatic (32%). Demographic factors such as age, education level, and marital status significantly influenced STI knowledge, while residential area did not. Higher education, particularly bachelor's degrees and above, was strongly associated with better awareness. Digital platforms like the internet and social media emerged as significant sources of STI information. Undergoing STI testing, discussing STIs with partners, using protection, and receiving the HPV vaccine were linked to higher knowledge levels. This study highlights the need for targeted educational interventions, integration of sexual health education into curricula, training healthcare providers, community engagement, and leveraging digital platforms to enhance STI awareness and prevention efforts among Saudi women.

Abstract:Background: The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its consequences compromise the health of Women of Reproductive Age (WRA). The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge, safety practices, and anxiety levels among WRA during COVID-19 outbreaks. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional, correlational design was used to recruit a convenience sample of 453 WRA in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using an electronic self-administered questionnaire of Spielberger state-trait anxiety and an adapted authors-developed knowledge and practices scale using an extensive literature review. Data were collected between September and December 2020 targeting all women in the country. Pearson correlation coefficient has been used to test correlation utilizing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25. Results: The mean score of anxiety was 46.0 (13.40). Women have a high mean score of knowledge (24.50, standard deviation (SD) = 3.40) while having a low mean score of practices (19.70, SD = 3.10) indicating inappropriate practices. A significant difference was found in anxiety (t479 = 2.52, p = .012) and knowledge (t479 = -1.98, p = .048) between pregnant and non-pregnant women, while no statistically significant difference was found in relation to practices. The mean score of anxiety was higher among pregnant women than non-pregnant women, while a slightly higher mean score of knowledge was observed for non-pregnant women compared to pregnant ones. Conclusions: Although women had good knowledge about safety precautions, their practices did not indicate that. There is a need to educate women about safety practices and interventions that buffer their anxiety levels.

A revisit of knowledge, attitude and practice of emergency contraception in Hong Kong

Abstract:Objectives: To revisit women's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding emergency contraception (EC) in Hong Kong. The research sought to provide insights for improving the accessibility and quality of EC services. Study design: A cross-sectional study, where self-administered questionnaires were distributed at a major community sexual and reproductive health service in Hong Kong over a 3-month period between July 2023 and October 2023. Descriptive and regression analyses were used. Results: Of 1127 respondents, the majority (n=1057, 93.8%) reported using contraception and 513 (45.6%) had used EC. The main contraceptive methods used were male condoms and oral contraceptive pills. The majority (n=1035, 91.8%) of respondents demonstrated awareness about EC and 938 (83.2%) participants correctly reported the timeframe for oral EC. Around two-thirds reported the internet as being their leading source of EC knowledge. Over 93% of respondents advocated for enhancing public awareness. Acceptance of non-traditional means of obtaining EC, such as over-the-counter provision (51.3%), pharmacy provision (49.8%) and telemedicine consultation (43.1%), were higher than face-to-face EC consultations (32.9%). Conclusions: Family planning service users' characteristics and KAP regarding EC have significantly changed over the last 20 years. Women now demonstrate greater awareness, knowledge and openness regarding EC, indicating improved readiness for more liberal delivery of EC nowadays. This study highlights the need for restructuring EC service provision in Hong Kong to address women's changing preferences and contraceptive needs, and to minimise barriers to EC access. We recommend reclassifying emergency contraceptive pills as non-prescription drugs in Hong Kong to align with international practice.

Abstract:Objective Pandemics have affected many people's social and emotional lives. Conception planning, contraceptive usage, and pregnancy intentions are activities with minimal research. This study is the first to evaluate how the COVID‐19 pandemic influenced reproductive plans and contraceptive use among women during the pandemic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2022. Methods A cross‐sectional survey was conducted by sending an online questionnaire to married women from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included demographics, personal obstetrics information, changes in pregnancy intentions owing to the COVID‐19 pandemic, and questions about contraceptive usage. Qualitative data were presented as frequencies, and a χ2 test was performed to determine the relationships among the variables. Results A total of 639 women enrolled in the study; most participants were 25–34 years old, and most indicated they changed their reproductive intentions during the pandemic (49%). Family planning accounted for 25.8% of participants who changed their reproductive intentions. Only 17.5% changed their choices because of fear of the COVID‐19 impact. The percentage of women using contraception was significantly reduced during the lockdown, to 36.8%. Oral contraceptive pills were the most frequently used method during the curfew period (17.5%). Conclusion The COVID‐19 lockdown affected the reproductive intentions of most women in Jeddah, and it significantly reduced contraceptive use.

The use and perceived value of electronic health information resources by health care professionals in the field of medicine, pharmacy, and nursing in Jazan province, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background Healthcare workers increasingly use Electronic Health Information Resources (EHIRs) to make evidence-based decisions. Our study was intended to assess the perception, attitude, and practice of healthcare professionals in medicine, pharmacy, and nursing regarding their perceived value and use of EHIRs. Methods We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using a pre-validated questionnaire among healthcare professionals in Jazan province from September 2022 to February 2023. We included healthcare professionals and interns with medical, pharmacy, or nursing degrees and excluded those who refused informed consent. Results We included fully completed data from 294 participants, with an actual response rate of just 80.1 %. Almost 87.41 % utilized the health information resources at their workplace, with UpToDate [39.45 %] and Medscape [67.01 %] being the most frequently used medical databases. The health facilities' access to electronic health resources significantly impacted healthcare professionals' [p = 0.04] and medical interns' [p = 0.02] roles. Faculty members felt the need to access electronic health information at their workplace [p = 0.00]. Lack of time to access electronic health information due to a busy schedule was a significant reason that impacted the attitude of medical professionals [p = 0.008] and nursing staff [p = 0.025]. An excessive amount of clinically unrelated data was the primary obstacle (181/294, p < 0.0001) in using electronic health information resources. Conclusion Our study showed the pattern of healthcare professionals using EHIRs in the Jazan province, Saudi Arabia. We believe the study's outcome can help increase the calibre of electronic health information services available to healthcare professionals and raise awareness of different EHIRs in improving clinical care.

Abstract:Objective The present study aimed to assess the current knowledge and uptake of Papanicolaou (Pap) tests for cervical screening among Saudi women, including barriers to undergoing the test and the availability of related services. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted using a health questionnaire administered through the Absher portal between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020. The questionnaire consisted of five questions and took less than 5 min to complete. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze demographic variables, and chi‐square tests were used to examine the association between these variables and Pap test uptake. Results The questionnaire included 8194 Saudi women, with the majority from Makkah (24.40%), Riyadh (21.92%), and Eastern (14.44%) regions. Only 22.52% of respondents had ever received a Pap test, and among them, 17.48% did so based on their physician's recommendation. Private clinics accounted for 10.73% of Pap test locations, while public clinics accounted for 8.97%. The primary reasons for not undergoing the test were lack of knowledge regarding its importance (40.24%) and lack of information from physicians (16.96%). Knowledge of the Pap test as a cervical screening method was significantly associated with marital status, Saudi region, and age group. Conclusions This study revealed low awareness of the Pap test for cervical screening among Saudi women, particularly in younger age groups. Targeted educational initiatives are essential to increase awareness and emphasize the significance of regular screenings, especially among younger individuals, to enhance early detection and reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Saudi Arabia.
