Abstract:An irreducible polynomial $f\in\Bbb F_q[X]$ of degree $n$ is {\em normal} over $\Bbb F_q$ if and only if its roots $r, r^q,\dots,r^{q^{n-1}}$ satisfy the condition $\Delta_n(r, r^q,\dots,r^{q^{n-1}})\ne 0$, where $\Delta_n(X_0,\dots,X_{n-1})$ is the $n\times n$ circulant determinant. By finding a suitable {\em symmetrization} of $\Delta_n$ (A multiple of $\Delta_n$ which is symmetric in $X_0,\dots,X_{n-1}$), we obtain a condition on the coefficients of $f$ that is sufficient for $f$ to be normal. This approach works well for $n\le 5$ but encounters computational difficulties when $n\ge 6$. In the present paper, we consider irreducible polynomials of the form $f=X^n+X^{n-1}+a\in\Bbb F_q[X]$. For $n=6$ and $7$, by an indirect method, we are able to find simple conditions on $a$ that are sufficient for $f$ to be normal. In a more general context, we also explore the normal polynomials of a finite Galois extension through the irreducible characters of the Galois group.

Abstract:In this article, we study the combinatorics of congruence subgroups of the modular group. More precisely, we consider the notion of minimal monomial solutions. These are the solutions of a matrix equation (also appearing in the study of Coxeter friezes), modulo an integer $N$, whose components are identical and minimal for this property. The objective here is to characterize the solutions of this type verifying a property of irreducibility modulo a prime power.

Abstract:We promote the recent research by Akiyama and Kaneko on the higher-order derivative values $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)$ of the cyclotomic polynomials. This article focuses on Lehmer's explicit formula of $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)/\Phi_n(1)$ as a polynomial of the Euler and Jordan totient functions over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then we prove Akiyama-Kaneko's conjecture that the polynomials have a specific simple factor.

Abstract:The large sieve is used to estimate the density of integral quadratic polynomials $Q$, such that there exists an odd degree integral polynomial which has resultant $\pm 1$ with $Q$. The proof uses properties of cyclotomic polynomials and the Chebotarev density theorem. Given a monic integral polynomial $R$ of odd degree, this is used to show that for almost all integral quadratic polynomials $Q$, there exists a prime $p$ such that $Q$ and $R$ share a common root in the algebraic closure of the finite field with $p$ elements. Using recent work of Landesman, an application to the average size of the $n$-torsion of the class group of quadratic number fields is also given.

Square-free values of polynomials

Abstract:It is conjectured that all separable polynomials with integers coefficients, satisfying some local conditions, take infinitely many square free values on integer arguments. But not a single polynomial of degree greater than $3$ is proven to exhibit this property. In this article, we propose a method to show that ``cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{\ell}(X)$ take square free values with positive proportion". Following this method, conditionally, we do prove the Square-free conjecture for all cyclotomic polynomials. The method is applicable to some other class of polynomials as well. Moreover we show that the method readily succeeds for quadratic polynomials to give unconditional result. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the square-free conjecture for cyclotomic polynomials under abc conjecture.

Abstract:Let F-q be the finite field of order q and f (x) be an irreducible polynomial of degree n over F-q. For a positive divisor n(1) of n, define the n(1)-traces of f (x) to be Tr(alpha; n(1)) = alpha+alpha(q) +...+alpha(qn1-1) where alpha's are the roots of f (x). Let N-q*(n; n(1)) denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials of degree n over F-q with nozero n(1)-traces. Ruskey, Miers and Sawada have found the formula for N-q*(n; n). Based on the properties of linearized polynomials, we obtain the formula for N-q*(n; n(1)) in the general case, including a new proof to the result by Ruskey, Miers and Sawada.

Abstract:An irreducible polynomial over F q is said to be normal over F q if its roots are linearly independent over F q . We show that there is a polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ Z [ X 1 , … , X n ] , independent of q, such that if an irreducible polynomial f = X n + a 1 X n − 1 + ⋯ + a n ∈ F q [ X ] is such that h n ( a 1 , … , a n ) ≠ 0 , then f is normal over F q . The polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) is computed explicitly for n ≤ 5 and partially for n = 6 . When char F q = p , we also show that there is a polynomial h p , n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ F p [ X 1 , … , X n ] , depending on p, which is simpler than h n but has the same property. These results remain valid for monic separable irreducible polynomials over an arbitrary field with a cyclic Galois group.

On the Recursive Behaviour of the Number of Irreducible Polynomials with Certain Properties over Finite Fields

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the field with $q$ elements and of characteristic $p$. For $a\in\mathbb{F}_p$ consider the set \begin{equation*} S_a(n)=\{f\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]\mid\operatorname{deg}(f)=n,~f\text{ irreducible, monic and} \operatorname{Tr}(f)=a\}. \end{equation*} In a recent paper, Robert Granger proved for $q=2$ and $n\ge 2$ that $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|= 0$ if $2\nmid n$ and $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|=|S_1(n/2)|$ if $2\mid n$. We will prove a generalization of this result for all finite fields. This is possible due to an observation about the size of certain subsets of monic irreducible polynomials arising in the context of a group action of subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on monic polynomials. Additionally, it enables us to apply these methods to prove two further results that are very similar in nature.

Abstract:In this note, we apply the power-partible reduction to show the following arithmetic properties of large Schröder polynomials $S_n(z)$ and little Schröder polynomials $s_n(z)$: for any odd prime $p$, nonnegative integer $r\in\mathbb{N}$, $\varepsilon\in\{-1,1\}$ and $z\in\mathbb{Z}$ with $\gcd(p,z(z+1))=1$, we have \[ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{2r+1}\varepsilon^k S_k(z)\equiv 1\pmod {p}\quad \text{and} \quad \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{2r+1}\varepsilon^k s_k(z)\equiv 0\pmod {p}. \]

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

Irreducibility of Polynomials with Square Coefficients over Finite Fields

Abstract:We study a random polynomial of degree $n$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the coefficients are independent and identically distributed and uniformly chosen from the squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our main result demonstrates that the likelihood of such a polynomial being irreducible approaches $1/n + O(q^{-1/2})$ as the field size $q$ grows infinitely large. The analysis we employ also applies to polynomials with coefficients selected from other specific sets.

Abstract:Let $ \mathbb{F}_q $ be the finite field of $ q $ elements, and $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ its extension of degree $ n $. A normal basis of $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ over $ \mathbb{F}_q $ is a basis of the form $ \{\alpha, \alpha^{q}, \cdots, \alpha^{q^{n-1}}\} $. Some problems on normal bases can be finally reduced to the determination of the irreducible factors of the polynomial $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $, while the latter is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomials. Denote by $ \mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1) $ the set of all distinct monic irreducible factors of $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $. The criteria for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)|\leq 2 $\end{document} have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we provide the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = s, $\end{document} where $ s $ is a positive integer by using the properties of cyclotomic polynomials and results from the Diophantine equations. As an application, we obtain the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = 3, 4, 5. $\end{document}

Abstract:In this paper, a new $q$-supercongruence with two free parameters modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial is obtained. Our main auxiliary tools are Watson's $_8\phi_7$ transformation formula for basic hypergeometric series, the `creative microscoping' method recently introduced by Guo and Zudilin and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials. By taking suitable parameter substitutions in the established $q$-supercongruence, some nice congruences involving the Bernoulli numbers are derived.

Linear Congruences in several variables with congruence restrictions

Abstract:In this article, we consider systems of linear congruences in several variables and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions as well as explicit expressions for the number of solutions subject to certain restriction conditions. These results are in terms of Ramanujan sums and generalize the results of Lehmer \cite{DNL13} and Bibak et al. \cite{BBVRL17}. These results have analogues over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ where the proofs are similar, once notions such as Ramanujan sums are defined in this set-up. We use the recent description of Ramanujan sums over function fields as developed by Zhiyong Zheng \cite{ZZ18}. This is discussed in the last section. We illustrate the formulae obtained for the number of solutions through some examples. Over the integers, such problems have a rich history, some of which seem to have been forgotten - a number of papers written on the topic re-prove known results. The present authors also became aware of some of these old articles only while writing the present article and hence, we recall very briefly some of the old work by H. J. S. Smith, Rademacher, Brauer, Butson and Stewart, Ramanathan, McCarthy, and Spilker \cite{AB26, BS55, PJM76, HR25, KGR44, HJSS61, JS96}.

Congruence relations of Ankeny$\unicode{x2013}$Artin$\unicode{x2013}$Chowla type for real quadratic fields

Abstract:In 1951, Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla published a brief note containing four congruence relations involving the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for positive squarefree integers $d\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$. Many of the ideas present in their paper can be seen as the precursors to the now developed theory of cyclotomic fields. Curiously, little attention has been paid to the cases of $d\equiv 2,3\bmod{4}$ in the literature. In the present work, we show that the congruences of the type proven by Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla can be seen as a special case of a more general methodology using Kubota$\unicode{x2013}$Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-functions. Aside from the classical congruence involving Bernoulli numbers, we derive congruences involving quadratic residues and non-residues in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ by relating these values to a well known expression for $L_p(1, \chi)$. We conclude with a discussion of known counterexamples to the so-called Composite Ankeny$\unicode{x2013}$Artin$\unicode{x2013}$Chowla conjecture and relate these to special dihedral extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.
