Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.

Abstract:The q-binomial coefficients are the polynomial cousins of the traditional binomial coefficients, and a number of identities for binomial coefficients can be translated into this polynomial setting. For instance, the familiar vanishing of the alternating sum across row n of Pascal's triangle is captured by the so-called Gaussian Formula. In this paper, we find a q-binomial congruence which synthesizes this result and Fleck's congruence for binomial coefficients.

Abstract:In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.

Abstract:Let $F$ be any field containing the finite field of order $q$. A $q$-polynomial $L$ over $F$ is an element of the polynomial ring $F[x]$ with the property that all powers of $x$ that appear in $L$ with nonzero coefficient have exponent a power of $q$. It is well known that given any ordinary polynomial $f$ in $F[x]$, there exists a $q$-polynomial that is divisible by $f$. We study the smallest degree of such a $q$-polynomial. This is equivalent to studying the $\mathbb{F}_q$-span of the roots of $f$ in a splitting field. We relate this quantity to the representation theory of the Galois group of $f$. As an application we give a simultaneous construction of the binary Golay code of length 24, and the Steiner system on 24 points.

In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. A Unified Approach to Unimodality of Gaussian Polynomials

Abstract:In 2013, Pak and Panova proved the strict unimodality property of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{\ell+m}{m}_q$ (as polynomials in $q$) based on the combinatorics of Young tableaux and the semigroup property of Kronecker coefficients. They showed it to be true for all $\ell,m\geq 8$ and a few other cases. We propose a different approach to this problem based on computer algebra, where we establish a closed form for the coefficients of these polynomials and then use cylindrical algebraic decomposition to identify exactly the range of coefficients where strict unimodality holds. This strategy allows us to tackle generalizations of the problem, e.g., to show unimodality with larger gaps or unimodality of related sequences. In particular, we present proofs of two additional cases of a conjecture by Stanley and Zanello.

Abstract:We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.

Abstract:We extend our method to compute division polynomials of Jacobians of curves over Q to curves over Q(t), in view of computing mod ell Galois representations occurring in the étale cohomology of surfaces over Q. Although the division polynomials which we obtain are unfortunately too complicated to achieve this last goal, we still obtain explicit families of Galois representations over P^1_Q, and we study their degeneration at places of bad reduction of the corresponding curve.

Abstract:Gauss sums play an important role in number theory and arithmetic geometry. The main objects of study in this paper are Gauss sums over the finite field with q elements. Recently, the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the small index case has been studied in several papers. In the process of the evaluation, it is realized that a sign (or a root of unity) ambiguity unavoidably occurs. These papers determined the ambiguities by the congruences modulo L, where L is certain divisor of the order of Gauss sum. However, such method is unavailable in some situations. This paper presents a new method to determine the sign (root of unity) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case and index 4 case, which is not only suitable for all the situations with q being odd, but also comparatively more efficient and uniform than the previous method.
The Pauli group as Galois group of irreducible pure polynomials over Q

Abstract:We realize the Pauli group $P$ as Galois group of polynomials over the rational numbers. It is shown by construction that it is possible to find \textit{pure} polynomials of the form $X^8+k^2$ for $k\neq \lambda^2, 2\lambda^2; k,\lambda \in \mathbb{N}$, that provide an infinite family of such Galois extensions. This form is also proven to be a necessary condition for a realization of $P$ by an irreducible \textit{pure} polynomial of degree 8. It automatically provides a realization of the quaternion group $Q_8$ by pure polynomials over a quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, whereas it is shown to be impossible to realize $Q_8$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ by any pure polynomial of degree 8. We link the results to Witt's theory of embedding criteria for the quaternion group via ternary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Q}$. This provides for a connection to general realizability criteria for embeddings of some finite groups into the Pauli group, and the interesting subtleties therein, via the equivalence of certain quaternion algebras. We thus show how to extend Witt's result of 1936 to an embedding of $Q_8$ into the Pauli group.

Congruences for sums of MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials

Abstract:One variant of the $q$-Catalan polynomials is defined in terms of Gaussian polynomials by $\mathcal{C}_k(q)=\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{2k}{k}_q-q\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{2k}{k+1}_q$. Liu studied congruences of the form $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} q^k\mathcal{C}_k$ modulo the cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n(q)^2$, provided that $n\equiv\pm 1\pmod3$. Apparently the case $n\equiv 0\pmod3$ has been missing from the literature. It is our primary purpose to fill this gap by the current work. In addition, we discuss certain fascinating link to Dirichlet character sum identities.

Linear independence of $q$-analogue of the generalized Stieltjes constants over number fields

Abstract:In this article, we aim to extend the research conducted by Chatterjee and Garg in 2024, particularly focusing on the $q$-analogue of the generalized Stieltjes constants. These constants constitute the coefficients in the Laurent series expansion of a $q$-analogue of the Hurwitz zeta function around $s=1$. Chatterjee and Garg previously established arithmetic results related to $\gamma_0(q,x)$, for $q>1$ and $0 < x <1$ over the field of rational numbers. Here, we broaden their findings to encompass number fields $\mathbb{F}$ in two scenarios: firstly, when $\mathbb{F}$ is linearly disjoint from the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_b)$, and secondly, when $\mathbb{F}$ has non-trivial intersection with $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_b)$, with $b \geq 3$ being any positive integer.

Abstract:We study the existence of formal power series solutions to q-algebraic equations. When a solution exists, we give a sufficient condition on the equation for this solution to have a positive radius of convergence. We emphasize on the case where the solution is divergent, giving a sharp estimate on the growth of the coefficients. As a consequence, we obtain a bound on the q-Gevrey order of the formal solution, which is optimal in some cases. Various examples illustrate our main results.

Abstract:We discuss, in a non-archimedean setting, the distribution of the coefficients of L-polynomials of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This allows us to prove, among other things, that the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by such characteristic polynomials has dimension $g+1$. We also state a conjecture about the archimedean distribution of the number of rational points of curves over finite fields.
