Abstract:To facilitate system architecture development using DoDAF, we propose an architecture development methodology based on DoDAF 2.0 in this paper. First, based on experiences in practice, gaps between Operational Viewpoint (OV), Capability Viewpoint (CV) and System/Service Viewpoint (SV/SvcV) are analyzed. Second, to bridge the gaps, two architecture viewpoints, i.e. Information activity Viewpoint (IaV) and Capability effect Viewpoint (CeV) proposed in our previous work, are introduced. In addition, a meta-model is provided to define key architecture elements and their relationships in these six viewpoints (i.e. OV, CV, IaV, CeV, SV and SvcV). Third, via analysis of element associations in different viewpoints and models, we give a suggested process of developing system architecture using the six viewpoints and their models, including model development steps, inputs and outputs of each step. Finally, a case study is conducted by applying our methodology to describe architecture of a defense system. Results show that our methodology can effectively facilitate system architecture development and help architects (especially for information system architects) to develop architecture from OV, CV to SV and SvcV.

Abstract:The basic format in which software requirements and architecture designs are documented is essentially file-based, and it has persisted for decades. Current indexing methods used in file-based documentation are not conducive to retrieving software knowledge. We propose to index software documents with a suitable lightweight ontology to improve the retrieval and traceability of software knowledge. Initial results from a prototype implementation have shown promising prospects.

Abstract:A reference architecture is a key architectural asset for the systems engineer, that intends both to simplify its work and to guarantee the exhaustiveness of the coverage of its system analyses. This paper proposes formal definitions for a reference architecture, based on the theory of abstract interpretation that formalizes the notion of abstraction, which covers respectively large and small‐scale families of systems. These definitions are illustrated by automotive, building, and mining case studies.

Abstract:The current work expands on previous practical experience, and presents a practical engineering method to define enterprises. This method employs a series of architecture reference models to create an optimised enterprise free of legacy problems and hidden agendas. Building on the performance and organisation reference models (PRM and ORM), as previously discussed, the method examines the design of the ORM and clarifies the derivation of the business reference model (BRM) from it. By relying on heuristics and self-discovery, this method offers significant potential for optimising organisations. This previously unpublished engineering approach, which has a proven track record, provides a notable, novel, and practical means of designing a fit-for-purpose enterprise architecture.

Abstract:This paper surveys the current state of the art in document automation (DA). The objective of DA is to reduce the manual effort during the generation of documents by automatically integrating input from different sources and assembling documents conforming to defined templates. There have been reviews of commercial solutions of DA, particularly in the legal domain, but to date there has been no comprehensive review of the academic research on DA architectures and technologies. The current survey of DA reviews the academic literature and provides a clearer definition and characterization of DA and its features, identifies state-of-the-art DA architectures and technologies in academic research, and provides ideas that can lead to new research opportunities within the DA field in light of recent advances in artificial intelligence and deep neural networks.

Abstract:Architecture description language (ADL) provides a linguistic approach to represent software architecture. Usually, it has to develop a new ADL for a particular domain. Some domains are difficult to develop the ADLs, e.g. data processing domain (DPD). Since the products of these domains can apply to many different areas as a sub module, which complicates the architecture abstraction. This paper shows the development of our ADL for data processing domain. It has domain independence meta model concept, and it supports variability description and the code generation rules have been indicated too. Our data processing product line can be described by this ADL and generate product code, which will improve the productivity.

Abstract:Data is the key to success for any Data-Driven Organization, and managing it is considered the most challenging task. Data Architecture (DA) focuses on describing, collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing the data to meet business needs. In this tool demo paper, we present the DAT, a model-driven engineering tool enabling data architects, data engineers, and other stakeholders to describe how data flows through the system and provides a blueprint for managing data that saves time and effort dedicated to Data Architectures for IoT applications. We evaluated this work by modeling five case studies, receiving expressiveness and ease of use feedback from two companies, more than six researchers, and eighteen undergraduate students from the software architecture course

ABC/ADL:An XML-Based Software Architecture Description Language

Abstract:As the blueprint for software development, software architecture (SA) is very important, and much more attention has been paid to the research on SA. Architecture description language (ADL) is one of the keys to SA research. An XML-based ADL, named ABC/ADL, is presented. ABC/ADL has the ability of describing the high level structure of software system. Besides, it supports refinement, evolution, automated composition and verification of the system. ABC/ADL adopts XML, the data inter-operation standard, as its meta-language. This enables it to have inter-operability with other ADLs as well as traceability between design-phase artifacts and other software life-cycle phase artifacts.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic review of common analytical data architectures based on DAMA-DMBOK and ArchiMate. The paper is work in progress and provides a first view on Gartner's Logical Data Warehouse paradigm, Data Fabric and Dehghani's Data Mesh proposal as well as their interdependencies. It furthermore sketches the way forward how this work can be extended by covering more architecture paradigms (incl. classic Data Warehouse, Data Vault, Data Lake, Lambda and Kappa architectures) and introducing a template with among others "context", "problem" and "solution" descriptions, leading ultimately to a pattern system providing guidance for choosing the right architecture paradigm for the right situation.

Abstract:Domain specific software architecture aims at software reuse through construction of domain architecture reference model. The constructed reference model presents a set of individual components and their interaction points. When starting on a new large software project, the design engineer starts with pre-constructed model, which can be easily browsed and picks up opportunities of use in the new solution design. This report discusses application of domain reference design methods by deriving domain specific reference architecture for a product ordering system in a design center. The product in this case is instock and special order blinds from different manufacturers in a large supply store. The development of mature domain specific reference software architecture for this domain is not the objective of this report. However, this report would like to capture the method used in one such process and that is the primary concern of this report. This report lists subjective details of such a process applied to the domain of ordering custom and instock blinds from a large home construction and goods supply store. This report also describes the detailed process of derivation of knowledge models, unified knowledge models and the reference architecture for this domain. However, this domain model is only partially complete which may not be used for any real applications. This report is a result of a course project undertaken while studying this methodology.

Abstract:As an important type of architectural knowledge, documenting architectural assumptions (AAs) is critical to the success of projects. In this work, we proposed and validated an Architectural Assumption Documentation Framework (AADF), which is composed of four viewpoints (i.e., the Detail, Relationship, Tracing, and Evolution viewpoint), to document Ms in projects. One case study with two cases was conducted at two companies from different domains and countries. The main findings are: (1) AADF can be understood by architects in a short time (i.e., a half day workshop); (2) the AA Evolution view requires the least time to create, followed by the AA Detail view and the AA Relationship view; (3) AADF can help stakeholders to identify risks and understand Ms documented by other stakeholders; and (4) understanding and applying AADF is related to various factors, including factors regarding the framework per se (e.g., tutorial, examples, concepts, and terms), personal experience, resources (e.g., time), tool support, and project context (e.g., project size and number of AAs). Adjusting these factors in an appropriate way can facilitate the usage of AADF and further benefit the projects. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Modeling of software architectures is a fundamental part of software development processes. Reuse of software components and early analysis of software topologies allow the reduction of development costs and increases software quality. Integrating variability modeling concepts into architecture description languages (ADLs) is essential for the development of diverse software systems with high demands on software quality. In this paper, we present the integration of delta modeling into the existing ADL MontiArc. Delta modeling is a language-independent variability modeling approach supporting proactive, reactive and extractive product line development. We show how ?-MontiArc, a language for explicit modeling of architectural variability based on delta modeling, is implemented as domain-specific language (DSL) using the DSL development framework MontiCore. We also demonstrate how MontiCore's language reuse mechanisms provide efficient means to derive an implementation of ?-MontiArc tool implementation. We evaluate ?-Monti-Arc by comparing it with annotative variability modeling.

Abstract:Architectural design contexts contain a set of factors that influence software application development. Among them, organizational design contexts consist of high-level company concerns and how it is structured, for example, stakeholders and development schedule, heavily impacting design considerations. Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), as a vital concept in the Web3 space, is an organization constructed by automatically executed rules such as via smart contracts, holding features of the permissionless committee, transparent proposals, and fair contribution by stakeholders. In this work, we conduct a systematic literature review to summarize how DAO is structured as well as explore its benefits&challenges in Web3 applications.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, considerable effort has been devoted to the study of software architecture. A major portion of this effort has focused on the originally proposed view of four "C"s---components, connectors, configurations, and constraints---that are the building blocks of a system's architecture. Despite being simple and appealing, this view has proven to be incomplete and has required further elaboration. To that end, researchers have more recently tried to approach architectures from another important perspective---that of design decisions that yield a system's architecture. These more recent efforts have lacked a precise understanding of several key questions, however: (1) What is an architectural design decision (definition)? (2) How can architectural design decisions be found in existing systems (identification)? (3) What system decisions are and are not architectural (classification)? (4) How are architectural design decisions manifested in the code (reification)? (5) How can important architectural decisions be preserved and/or changed as desired (evolution)? This paper presents a technique targeted at answering these questions by analyzing information that is readily available about software systems. We applied our technique on over 100 different versions of two widely adopted open- source systems, and found that it can accurately uncover the architectural design decisions embodied in the systems.

Abstract:The way to document architecture is called Architecture Description (AD). It contains all the key design decisions, presents how the system is composed, specifies the interface of the component, and etc. Such information is needed not only during the whole development but also in the system maintenance or evolvement phase. Meanwhile, the amount of the various ADs in a modern software system becomes very large and the content of ADs is also richer. To understand the system ADs becomes challenging to the engineers. However, past research in the software engineering area did not pay enough attention to assisting the engineers to understand the ADs. On the other hand, according to the document navigation research in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), the engineer’s intention should be adequately presented. To address these issues, we proposed a Task-oriented Navigation Approach and developed a tool support. By specifying tasks that express the purpose of the engineer, our approach generates the organized information, trims the irrelevant descriptions, and guides the navigation sequentially. Our approach provides several major benefits. First, it offers an approach to capture the purpose of the engineer. Second, it reminds the engineer about the possible omission during the reading. Last, it improves the understandability of the AD and reduces the workload of the engineer.

Abstract:Context - The exponential growth of data is becoming a significant concern. Managing this data has become incredibly challenging, especially when dealing with various sources in different formats and speeds. Moreover, Ensuring data quality has become increasingly crucial for effective decision-making and operational processes. Data Architecture is crucial in describing, collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing data to meet business needs. Providing an abstract view of data-intensive applications is essential to ensure that the data is transformed into valuable information. We must take these challenges seriously to ensure we can effectively manage and use the data to our advantage. Objective - To establish an architecture framework that enables a comprehensive description of the data architecture and effectively streamlines data quality monitoring. Method - The architecture framework utilizes Model Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques. Its backing of data-intensive architecture descriptions empowers with an automated generation for data quality checks. Result - The Framework offers a comprehensive solution for data-intensive applications to model their architecture efficiently and monitor the quality of their data. It automates the entire process and ensures precision and consistency in data. With DAT, architects and analysts gain access to a powerful tool that simplifies their workflow and empowers them to make informed decisions based on reliable data insights. Conclusion - We have evaluated the DAT on more than five cases within various industry domains, demonstrating its exceptional adaptability and effectiveness.

Abstract:Dynamic reconfiguration is the action of modifying a software system at runtime. Several works have been using architectural specification as the basis for dynamic reconfiguration. Indeed ADLs (architecture description languages) let architects describe the elements that could be reconfigured as well as the set of constraints to which the system must conform during reconfiguration. In this work, we investigate the ADL literature in order to illustrate how reconfiguration is supported in four well-known ADLs: pi-ADL, ACME, C2SADL and Dynamic Wright. From this review, we conclude that none of these ADLs: (i) addresses the issue of consistently reconfiguring both instances and types; (ii) takes into account the behaviour of architectural elements during reconfiguration; and (iii) provides support for assessing reconfiguration, e.g., verifying the transition against properties.

Abstract:Software architecture has been shown to provide an appropriate level of granularity for representation of a managed software system and reasoning about the impact of adaptation choices on its properties. Software architecture-based adaptability is the ability to adapt a software system in terms of its architectural elements, such as its components and their interfaces. Despite its promise, architecture-based adaptation has remained largely elusive, mainly because it involves heavy engineering effort of making non-trivial changes to the manner in which a software system is implemented. In this paper, we present Acadia —a framework that automatically enables architecture-based adaptation of practically any Java 9+ application without requiring any changes to the implementation of the application itself. Acadia builds on the Java Platform Module System (JPMS) , which has brought extensive support for architecture-based development to Java 9 and subsequent versions. Acadia extends JPMS with the ability to provide and maintain a representation of an application's architecture and make changes to it at runtime. The results of our experimental evaluation, conducted on three large open-source Java applications, indicate that Acadia is able to efficiently apply dynamic changes to the architecture of these applications without requiring any changes to their implementation.

Abstract:It is difficult for software professionals to find all the architectural knowledge they need from architecture documentation, and this results in wasted time and mistakes in projects. This is the case even when architecture documentation is indexed by an ontology and stored in a semantic wiki. We present a prototype tool called AK-Finder which queries architectural knowledge stored in a semantic wiki as Linked Open Data using a SPARQL endpoint. Our tool retrieves knowledge from the semantic wiki and answers questions for architectural review, design, and development activities. The tool exemplifies how systems used in the software project life-cycle can integrate and improve access to architectural knowledge in a semantic wiki.
