Abstract:In the extensible bin packing problem we are asked to pack a set of items into a given number of bins, each with an original size. However, the original bin sizes can be extended if necessary. The goal is to minimize the total size of the bins. We consider the problem with unequal (original) bin sizes and present the tight bound of a list scheduling algorithm for each collection of original bin sizes and each number of bins. We further give better on-line algorithms for the two-bin case and the three-bin case. Interestingly, it is shown that the on-line algorithms have better competitive ratios for unequal bins than for equal bins. Some variants of the problem are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we will study the problem of dynamic bin packing with unit fraction items. We focus on analyzing the First Fit (FF) algorithm on this problem. There are two main results: i) we give the first bound for the FF algorithm on cases when the largest item is at most 1/k; ii) we generalize the previous framework for analyzing FF and get an improved upper bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this article, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In 2002, Seiden and van Stee [Seiden and van Stee 2003] proposed an elegant algorithm called H ⊗ C , comprised of the Harmonic algorithm H and the Improved Harmonic algorithm C , for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the Super Harmonic algorithm [Seiden 2002], a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in Seiden and van Stee [2003], the previous analysis framework does not work. In this article, we give a positive answer for this question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Abstract:We investigate and analyze the FFH algorithm proposed by Kinnersley and Langston [5]. We prove that the tight worst-case performance bound of FFH algorithm is 1.7, thereby answering a question in [5]. The case that bin sizes can be chosen is also considered.

Abstract:In the online bin packing problem, a list of items with integral sizes between 1 to B arrive one by one. Each item must be irrevocably assigned into a bin of capacity B upon its arrival without any information on the subsequent items, and the goal is to minimize the number of used bins. In this paper, we deal with online bin packing from a new sight. We present an asymptotic competitive scheme, i.e., for any ϵ>0, the asymptotic competitive ratio is at most ρ⁎+ϵ, where ρ⁎ is the smallest possible asymptotic competitive ratio among all online algorithms. Apart from the technical results, the analysis to bridge the online and the off-line approaches might be of particular interests.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (First Fit Decreasing Height) as a subroutine, we get a practical (simple and fast) algorithm for strip packing with an upper bound 11/9. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing can be applied to online strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic competitive ratio. It implies online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889 on the asymptotic competitive ratio. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed in [5].

Abstract:Simchi-Levi (Naval Res. Logist. 41 (1994) 579-585) proved that the famous bin packing algorithms FF and BF have an absolute worst-case ratio of no more than 74, and FFD and BFD have an absolute worst-case ratio of 32, respectively. These algorithms run in time O(nlogn). In this paper, we provide a linear time constant space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) off-line approximation algorithms with absolute worst-case ratio 32. This result is best possible unless P=NP. Furthermore, we present a linear time constant space on-line algorithm and prove that the absolute worst-case ratio is 74.

Abstract:In online strip packing we are asked to pack a list of rectangles one by one into a vertical strip of unit width, without any information about future rectangles. The goal is to minimize the total height of strip used. The best known algorithm is First Fit Shelf algorithm (Baker and Schwarz in SIAM J. Comput. 12(3):508–525, 1983), which has an absolute competitive ratio of 6.99 under the assumption that the height of each rectangle is bounded from above by one. We improve the shelf algorithm and show an absolute competitive ratio of $7/2+\sqrt{10}\approx 6.6623$ without the restriction on rectangle heights. Our algorithm also beats the best known online algorithm for parallel job scheduling.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a selfish bin packing problem, where each item is a selfish player and wants to minimize its cost. In our new model, if there are k items packed in the same bin, then each item pays a cost 1/ k , where k ≥ 1. First we find a Nash Equilibrium (NE) in time O ( n log n ) within a social cost at most 1.69103 OPT + 3, where OPT is the social cost of an optimal packing; where n is the number of items or players; then we give tight bounds for the worst NE on the social cost; finally we show that any feasible packing can be converged to a Nash Equilibrium in O ( n 2 ) steps without increasing the social cost.

Abstract:The Bin Packing problem in 2 space is an NP-Hard combinatorial problem in optimization of packing and arrangement of objects in a given space. It has a wide variety of applications ranging from logistics in retail industries to resource allocation in cloud computing. In this paper, we discuss the mathematical formulation of this problem. Furthermore, we analyse its time complexity, its NP-Hardness and some of its stochastic solutions with their efficiencies. We then propose additional complexities that would make the problem more fit for industrial use and discuss in depth the domains in which it might prove to be useful. We conclude while suggesting areas of improvement in operations research on this subject.

Abstract:This paper addresses a special bin packing problem in which each item can only be assigned to a subset of the bins. We name this problem as the restricted bin packing problem (RBPP). This paper is designed to explore the relationships of RBPP with classic NP-complete problems, and to resolve the restrictions of assignment through heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms. A new heuristic algorithm named 'Max-fit Based on Zigzag Sorting with Retained Feasibility' is proposed. In this heuristic algorithm, a feasibility retaining rule is constructed to assure the assignment of every item; a zigzag sorting method is designed to improve the performance of the algorithm. Our heuristic algorithm is able to generate better results in comparison with existing heuristics. Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) and Simulated Annealing (SA) are exploited to obtain better solutions for RBPP. A new construction method based on cliques and zigzag sorting are built for GRASP and SA. The proposed methods are shown to have higher efficiency than traditional ones through numeric examples.

Abstract:The study on one-dimensional bin packing problem may bring about many important applications such as multiprocessor scheduling, resource allocating, real-world planning and packing. Harmonic algorithms (including H K , RH , etc.) for bin packing have been famous for their linear-time and on-line properties for a long time. This paper profoundly analyzes the average-case performance of harmonic algorithms for pieces of i.i.d. sizes, provides the average-case performance ratio of H K under (0, d ] ( d ≤ 1) uniform distribution and the average-case performance ratio of RH under (0,1] uniform distribution. We also finished the discussion of the worst-case performance ratio of RH . Moreover, we propose a new improved version of RH that obtains better worst- and average-case performance ratios.

Abstract:an A-shaped bin packing problem, where the items are cylinders and they must be packed into an A-shaped tower in each bin is considered in this paper. It is a variant of the classical one dimensional bin packing problem. For the off-line version of the problem, it is the same to the classical bin packing problem. For the on-line version of the problem, directly extended and radius-classified heuristics from the classical bin packing are analyzed and compared with the worst case analysis and simulation methods. The worst case analysis shows that the asymptotic competitive ratios of heuristics extended from the next fit, the worst fit, the best fit, the almost worst fit, the harmonics are all infinity except of the first fit with asymptotic competitive ratio 2. The radius-classified heuristics perform as well as in classical bin packing in view of the worst case analysis. Simulation results show that the best fit is the best among the directly extended heuristics and give the equilibrium point of choosing directly extended or radius-classified heuristics for an instance.

Abstract:This paper presents a new model, the A Shaped Bin Packing Problem (ASBP), for industrial manufacturing systems. It is a variant of the classical one dimensional bin packing problem in which each item has two parameters, height and diameter. The classic algorithms for the bin packing problem were extended to the on line ASBP. Comparisons of the worst case analysis and simulation lead to interesting results. The asymptotic competitive ratios in the worst case version of on line heuristics such as Next Fit, Worst Fit, Best Fit (BF), Almost Worst Fit and Harmonic are all infinite, whereas the competitive ratio of First Fit is 2. The BF had the best average.

Abstract:Bin packing is a typical optimization problem with many real-world application scenarios. In the online bin packing problem, a sequence of items is revealed one at a time, and each item must be packed into a bin immediately after its arrival. Inspired by duality in optimization, we proposed pattern-based adaptive heuristics for the online bin packing problem. The idea is to predict the distribution of items based on packed items, and to apply this information in packing future arrival items in order to handle uncertainty in online bin packing. A pattern in bin packing is a combination of items that can be packed into a single bin. Patterns selected according to past items are adopted and periodically updated in scheduling future items in the algorithm. Symmetry in patterns and the stability of patterns in the online bin packing problem are discussed. We have implemented the algorithm and compared it with the Best-Fit in a series of experiments with various distribution of items to show its effectiveness.
