Abstract:In their recent article, Min Ru and Paul Vojta, among other things, proved the so-called general theorem (arithmetic part) which can be viewed as an extension of Schmidt's subspace theorem. In this note, we extend their result by replacing the divisors by closed subschemes.

Abstract:Subresultants of two univariate polynomials are one of the most classic and ubiquitous objects in computational algebra and algebraic geometry. In 1948, Habicht discovered and proved interesting relationships among subresultants. Those relationships were found to be useful for both structural understanding and efficient computation. Often one needs to consider several (possibly more than two) polynomials. It is rather straightforward to generalize the notion of subresultants to several polynomials. However, it is not obvious (in fact, quite challenging) to generalize the Habicht's result to several polynomials. The main contribution of this paper is to provide such a generalization.

Abstract:We prove Vojta's abc conjecture for projective space ${\Bbb P}^n({\Bbb C})$, assuming that the entire curves in ${\Bbb P}^n({\Bbb C})$ are highly ramified over the coordinate hyperplanes. This extends the results of Guo Ji and the second-named author for the case $n=2$ (see \cite{GW22}). We also explore the corresponding results for projective toric varieties. Consequently, we establish a version of Campana's orbifold conjecture for finite coverings of projective toric varieties.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:In 2002, Evertse and Schlickewei obtained a quantitative version of the so-called Absolute Parametric Subspace Theorem. This result deals with a parametrized class of twisted heights. One of the consequences of this result is a quantitative version of the Absolute Subspace Theorem, giving an explicit upper bound for the number of subspaces containing the solutions of the Diophantine inequality under consideration. In the present paper, we further improve Evertse's and Schlickewei's quantitative version of the Absolute Parametric Subspace Theorem, and deduce an improved quantitative version of the Absolute Subspace Theorem. We combine ideas from the proof of Evertse and Schlickewei (which is basically a substantial refinement of Schmidt's proof of his Subspace Theorem from 1972, with ideas from Faltings' and Wuestholz' proof of the Subspace Theorem.

Abstract:Recently, there are many developments on the second main theorem for holomorphic curves into algebraic varieties intersecting divisors in general position or subgeneral position. In this paper, we refine the concept of subgeneral position by introducing the notion of the index of subgeneral position. With this new notion we give some surprising improvement of the previous known second main theorem type results. Moreover, via the analogue between Nevanlinna theory and Diophantine approximation, the corresponding Schmidt’s subspace type theorems are also established in the final section.

Abstract:The paper [GLZ] "L-functions of Carlitz modules, resultantal varieties and rooted binary trees" is devoted to a description of some resultantal varieties related to L-functions of Carlitz modules. It contains a conjecture that some of these varieties coincide. This conjecture can be formulated in terms of polynomials, namely, in terms of a fact that an explicitly defined polynomial belongs to the radical of the ideal generated by some other polynomials. We give an explicit statement of this conjecture and a numerical result.

Abstract:The common behaviour of many families of numerical semigroups led to defining, firstly, the Frobenius varieties and, secondly, the (Frobenius) pseudo-varieties. However, some interesting families are still not covered by these definitions. To overcome this situation, here we introduce the concept of Frobenius restricted variety (or R-variety). We generalize most of the results for varieties and pseudo-varieties to R-varieties. In particular, we study the tree structure that arises within them.

Abstract:In this article, we describe explicitely the Gorenstein locus of all minuscule Schubert varieties. This proves a special case of a conjecture of A. Woo and A. Yong (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0603273" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0603273">math.AG/0603273</a>) on the Gorenstein locus of Schubert varieties.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over the function field $K$ of a compact Riemann surface $B$. Fix a model $f \colon \mathcal{A} \to B$ of $A/K$ and an effective horizontal divisor $\mathcal{D} \subset \mathcal{A}$. We study $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral sections $\sigma$ of $\mathcal{A}$ where $S \subset B$ is arbitrary. These sections $\sigma$ are algebraic and satisfy the geometric condition $f(\sigma(B) \cap \mathcal{D})\subset S$. Developing the idea of Parshin, we formulate a hyperbolic-homotopic height of such sections as a substitute for intersection theory to establish new results concerning the finiteness and the polynomial growth of large unions of $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral points where $S$ is only required to be finite in a thin analytic open subset of $B$. Such results are out of reach of purely algebraic methods and imply new evidence and interesting phenomena to the Geometric Lang-Vojta conjecture.

Two theorems on the vanishing of Ext

Abstract:We prove two theorems on the vanishing of Ext over commutative Noetherian local rings. Our first theorem shows that there are no Burch ideals which are rigid over non-regular local domains. Our second theorem reformulates a conjecture of Huneke-Wiegand in terms of the vanishing of Ext, and highlights its relation with the celebrated Auslander-Reiten conjecture. We also discuss several consequences of our results, for example, about the rigidity of the Frobenius endomorphism in prime characteristic p and a generalization of a result of Araya.

Abstract:The Subspace Theorem due to Schmidt (1972) is a broad generalisation of Roth's Theorem in Diophantine Approximation (1955) which, in the same way as the latter, suffers a notorious lack of effectivity. This problem is tackled from a probabilistic standpoint by determining the proportion of algebraic linear forms of bounded heights and degrees for which there exists a solution to the Subspace Inequality lying in a subspace of large height. The estimates are established for a class of height functions emerging from an analytic parametrisation of the projective space. They are pertinent in the regime where the heights of the algebraic quantities are larger than those of the rational solutions to the inequality under consideration, and are valid for approximation functions more general than the power functions intervening in the original Subspace Theorem. These estimates are further refined in the case of Roth's Theorem so as to yield a Khintchin-type density version of the so-called Waldschmidt conjecture (which is known to fail pointwise). This answers a question raised by Beresnevich, Bernik and Dodson (2009).

Our theorem explains the counterexample of Hacon and Kovács in [HK15].

Abstract:We revisit Schmidt's theorem connecting the Schmidt rank of a tensor with the codimension of a certain variety and adapt the proof to the case of arbitrary characteristic. We also establish a sharper result for this kind for homogeneous polynomials, assuming that the characteristic does not divide the degree. Further, we use this to relate the Schmidt rank of a homogeneous polynomial (resp., a collection of homogeneous polynomials of the same degree) with the codimension of the singular locus of the corresponding hypersurface (resp., intersection of hypersurfaces). This gives an effective version of Ananyan–Hochster's theorem [ J. Amer. Math. Soc. , 33 , No. 1, 291–309 (2020), Theorem A].

Abstract:We extend the Brauer-Siegel theorem to new families of number fields, both in the classical setting of asymptotically bad families and in the more general framework due to Tsfasman and Vlăduţ of asymptotically exact families. We introduce a notion of Galois complexity for extensions of number fields, and show that the generalized Brauer-Siegel theorem, as conjectured by Tsfasman and Vlăduţ, holds for families in which the complexity does not grow too fast. This allows to unify and extend all previously known results. The crucial step in our work is the proof of a new version -- stated in terms of our Galois complexity -- of a fundamental principle due to Stark descending exceptional zeroes of zeta functions down to quadratic number fields. Among the hitherto unknown cases we are able to treat are the families of number fields contained in the solvable Galois closure of a given number field.

Abstract:We start by an original investigation on subgroups of (even infinite) direct sums in the first 4 sections, that largely generalizes Remak's known theorem; inspired by that general picture we have elsewhere extended this elementary "virtual" diagrammatic situation (in diagrammatic length 2 meaning set-theoretic fixation of vertices) by generalizing to the notion of "virtuality" in module extensions and diagrams in modular representation theory. Our first approach starts with an appropriately defined equivalence relation, which is precisely what allows for treating the confusing case of multiple factors, thus giving a deeper insight into the structure of such subgroups. Several applications and new techniques arising from that approach are examined, even ones concerning basic properties of homomorphisms, extending well-known elementary ones.
