Abstract:This thesis will be discussing scoring play combinatorial games and looking at the general structure of these games under different operators. I will also be looking at the Sprague-Grundy values for scoring play impartial games, and demonstrating that there is an easily computable function that will solve a large range of octal games easily. I will also be demonstrating that my theory can readily be applied to the scoring play game of Go and can lead to a much greater understanding of the game.

Abstract:Nine variations of the concept of domination in a simple graph are identified as fundamental domination concepts, and a unified approach is introduced for studying them. For each variation, the minimum cardinality of a subset of dominating elements is the corresponding fundamental domination number. It is observed that, for each nontrivial connected graph, at most five of these nine numbers can be different, and inequalities between these five numbers are given. Finally, these fundamental dominations are interpreted in terms of the total graph of the given graph, a concept introduced by the second author in 1965. It is argued that the very first domination concept, defined by O. Ore in 1962 and under a different name by C. Berge in 1958, deserves to be called the most fundamental of graph dominations.

Abstract:In this paper, we will be proving mathematically that scoring play combinatorial game theory covers all combinatorial games. That is, there is a sub-set of scoring play games that are identical to the set of normal play games, and a different sub-set that is identical to the set of misère play games. This proves conclusively, that scoring play combinatorial game theory is a complete theory for combinatorial games, and that every combinatorial game, regardless of the rule-set, can be analysed using scoring play combinatorial game theory.

Abstract:This paper introduces an objective for optimizing proper scoring rules. The objective is to maximize the increase in payoff of a forecaster who exerts a binary level of effort to refine a posterior belief from a prior belief. In this framework we characterize optimal scoring rules in simple settings, give efficient algorithms for computing optimal scoring rules in complex settings, and identify simple scoring rules that are approximately optimal. In comparison, standard scoring rules in theory and practice -- for example the quadratic rule, scoring rules for the expectation, and scoring rules for multiple tasks that are averages of single-task scoring rules -- can be very far from optimal.

Abstract:We consider a biased version of Maker-Breaker domination games, which were recently introduced by Gledel, Ir{š}i{č}, and Klav{ž}ar. Two players, Dominator and Staller, alternatingly claim vertices of a graph $G$ where Dominator is allowed to claim up to $b$ vertices in every round and she wins if and only if she occupies all vertices of a dominating set of $G$. For this game, we prove a full characterization of all trees on which Dominator has a winning strategy. For the number of rounds which Dominator needs to win, we give exact results when played on powers of paths or cycles, and for all trees we provide bounds which are optimal up to a constant factor not depending on $b$. Furthermore, we discuss general minimum degree conditions and study how many vertices can still be dominated by Dominator even when Staller has a winning strategy.

Each board position can be put into one of four outcome classes based on who the winner will be if both players play optimally. In this note, we review previous work, establish the outcome classes for several dimensions of rectangular board, and restrict the outcome class in several more.

Abstract:Domination game [SIAM J.\ Discrete Math.\ 24 (2010) 979--991] and total domination game [Graphs Combin.\ 31 (2015) 1453--1462] are by now well established games played on graphs by two players, named Dominator and Staller. In this paper, Z-domination game, L-domination game, and LL-domination game are introduced as natural companions of the standard domination games. Versions of the Continuation Principle are proved for the new games. It is proved that in each of these games the outcome of the game, which is a corresponding graph invariant, differs by at most one depending whether Dominator or Staller starts the game. The hierarchy of the five domination games is established. The invariants are also bounded with respect to the (total) domination number and to the order of a graph. Values of the three new invariants are determined for paths up to a small constant independent from the length of a path. Several open problems and a conjecture are listed. The latter asserts that the L-domination game number is not greater than $6/7$ of the order of a graph.

Complexity Dichotomies for Unweighted Scoring Rules

Abstract:Scoring systems are an extremely important class of election systems. We study the complexity of manipulation, constructive control by deleting voters (CCDV), and bribery for scoring systems. For manipulation, we show that for all scoring rules with a constant number of different coefficients, manipulation is in P. And we conjecture that there is no dichotomy theorem. On the other hand, we obtain dichotomy theorems for CCDV and bribery problem. More precisely, we show that both of these problems are easy for 1-approval, 2-approval, 1-veto, 2-veto, 3-veto, generalized 2-veto, and (2,1,...,1,0), and hard in all other cases. These results are the "dual" of the dichotomy theorem for the constructive control by adding voters (CCAV) problem from (Hemaspaandra, Hemaspaandra, Schnoor, AAAI 2014), but do not at all follow from that result. In particular, proving hardness for CCDV is harder than for CCAV since we do not have control over what the controller can delete, and proving easiness for bribery tends to be harder than for control, since bribery can be viewed as control followed by manipulation.

Abstract:Scoring play games were first studied by Fraser Stewart for his PhD thesis. He showed that under the disjunctive sum, scoring play games are partially ordered, but do not have the same "nice" structure of normal play games. In this paper I will be considering scoring play games under three different operators given by John Conway and William Stromquist and David Ullman, namely the conjunctive sum, selective sum and sequential join.

A comparative study of scoring systems by simulations

Abstract:Scoring rules aggregate individual rankings by assigning some points to each position in each ranking such that the total sum of points provides the overall ranking of the alternatives. They are widely used in sports competitions consisting of multiple contests. We study the tradeoff between two risks in this setting: (1) the threat of early clinch when the title has been clinched before the last contest(s) of the competition take place; (2) the danger of winning the competition without finishing first in any contest. In particular, four historical points scoring systems of the Formula One World Championship are compared with the family of geometric scoring rules, recently proposed by an axiomatic approach. The schemes used in practice are found to be competitive with respect to these goals, and the current rule seems to be a reasonable compromise close to the Pareto frontier. Our results shed more light on the evolution of the Formula One points scoring systems and contribute to the issue of choosing the set of point values.

Abstract:Rough sets theory has proved to be a useful mathematical tool for classification and prediction. However, as many real-world problems deal with ordering objects instead of classifying objects, one of the extensions of the classical rough sets approach is the dominance-based rough sets approach, which is mainly based on substitution of the indiscernibility relation by a dominance relation. In this article, we present a dominance-based rough sets approach to reasoning in incomplete ordered information systems. The approach shows how to find decision rules directly from an incomplete ordered decision table. We propose a reduction of knowledge that eliminates only that information that is not essential from the point of view of the ordering of objects or decision rules. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Using mostly elementary considerations, we find out who wins the game of Domineering on all rectangular boards of width 2, 3, 5, and 7. We obtain bounds on other boards as well, and prove the existence of polynomial-time strategies for playing on all boards of width 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11. We also comment briefly on toroidal and cylindrical boards.

On the Power of Dominated Players in Team Competitions.

Abstract:We investigate multi-round team competitions between two teams, where each team selects one of its players simultaneously in each round and each player can play at most once. The competition defines an extensive-form game with perfect recall and can be solved efficiently by standard methods. We are interested in the properties of the subgame perfect equilibria of this game. We first show that uniformly random strategy is a subgame perfect equilibrium strategy for both teams when there are no redundant players (i.e., the number of players in each team equals to the number of rounds of the competition). Secondly, a team can safely abandon its weak players if it has redundant players and the strength of players is transitive. We then focus on the more interesting case where there are redundant players and the strength of players is not transitive. In this case, we obtain several counterintuitive results. First of all, a player might help improve the payoff of its team, even if it is dominated by the entire other team. We give a necessary condition for a dominated player to be useful. We also study the extent to which the dominated players can increase the payoff. These results bring insights into playing and designing general team competitions.

Abstract:The domination game is played on a graph G. Vertices are chosen, one at a time, by two players Dominator and Staller. Each chosen vertex must enlarge the set of vertices of G dominated to that point in the game. Both players use an optimal strategy---Dominator plays so as to end the game as quickly as possible while Staller plays in such a way that the game lasts as many steps as possible. The game domination number of G is the number of vertices chosen when Dominator starts the game and the Staller-start game domination number of G when Staller starts the game. In this paper these two games are studied when played on trees and spanning subgraphs. A lower bound for the game domination number of a tree in terms of the order and maximum degree is proved and shown to be asymptotically tight. It is shown that for every k, there is a tree T with game domination number k and Staller-start game domination number k+1, and it is conjectured that there is no tree with game domination number k and Staller-start game domination number k-1. A relation between the game domination number of a graph and its spanning subgraphs is considered. It is proved that for any positive integer n, there exists a graph G and its spanning tree T such that the game domination number of G is at least n more than the game domination number of T. Moreover, there exist 3-connected graphs G having a spanning subgraph such that the game domination number of the spanning subgraph is arbitrarily smaller than that of G.

Compatible Weighted Proper Scoring Rules

Abstract:Many proper scoring rules such as the Brier and log scoring rules implicitly reward a probability forecaster relative to a uniform baseline distribution. Recent work has motivated weighted proper scoring rules, which have an additional baseline parameter. To date two families of weighted proper scoring rules have been introduced, the weighted power and pseudospherical scoring families. These families are compatible with the log scoring rule: when the baseline maximizes the log scoring rule over some set of distributions, the baseline also maximizes the weighted power and pseudospherical scoring rules over the same set. We characterize all weighted proper scoring families and prove a general property: every proper scoring rule is compatible with some weighted scoring family, and every weighted scoring family is compatible with some proper scoring rule.

Abstract:The general behavior of combinatorial scoring games is not well-understood. In this paper, we focus on a special class of “well-tempered” scoring games. By analogy with Grossman and Siegel’s notion of even- and odd-tempered normal play games, we declare a dicot scoring game to be even-tempered if all its options are odd-tempered, and odd-tempered if it is not atomic and all its options are even-tempered. Games of either sort are called well-tempered. These show up naturally when analyzing one of the “knot games” introduced by Henrich et al. We consider disjunctive sums of well-tempered scoring games, and develop a theory for them analogous to the standard theory of disjunctive sums of normal play partizan games. We isolate a special class of inversive well-tempered games which behave like normal play partizan games or like the “Milnor games” considered by Milnor and Hanner. In particular, inversive games (modulo equivalence) form a partially ordered abelian group, and there is an effective description of the partial order. Moreover, the full monoid of well-tempered scoring games (modulo equivalence) admits a complete description in terms of the group of inversive games. We also describe several examples of well-tempered scoring games and provide dictionaries listing the values of some small positions in two of these games.

Abstract:In this note, we generalize the concepts of (perfect) Roman and Italian dominations to (perfect) strong Roman and Roman k-domination for arbitrary positive integer k. These generalizations cover some of previous ones. After some comparison of their domination numbers, as a first study of these concepts, we study the (perfect, strong, perfect strong) Roman k-domination numbers of complete bipartite graphs.

Abstract:Committee scoring voting rules are multiwinner analogues of positional scoring rules which constitute an important subclass of single-winner voting rules. We identify several natural subclasses of committee scoring rules, namely, weakly separable, representation-focused, top-$k$-counting, OWA-based, and decomposable rules. We characterize SNTV, Bloc, and $k$-Approval Chamberlin--Courant as the only nontrivial rules in pairwise intersections of these classes. We provide some axiomatic characterizations for these classes, where monotonicity properties appear to be especially useful. The class of decomposable rules is new to the literature. We show that it strictly contains the class of OWA-based rules and describe some of the applications of decomposable rules.

Abstract:We study a variant of domination, called Roman domination, where we must assign to each vertex one of the labels 0, 1, or 2 and require that every vertex with label 0 has a neighbour with label 2. We study the problem of finding a low-cost Roman dominating function on Lebesgue-measurable graphings, that is, on infinite graphs whose vertices are the points of a probability space. We provide a framework to tackle optimisation problems in the measurable combinatorial setting. In particular, we fully answer the Roman domination problem on irrational cycle graphs, a specific type of graphing on the space $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ where an irrational number ${\alpha}$ is given and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is ${\alpha}$.
