Abstract:In this paper we give an example of a closed, strongly one-sided dense set which is not of uniform density type. We also show that there is a set of uniform density type which is not of strong uniform density type.

Abstract:It is well known that almost every dilation of a sequence of real numbers, that diverges to $\infty$, is dense modulo~1. This paper studies the exceptional set of points -- those for which the dilation is not dense. Specifically, we consider the Hausdorff and modified box dimensions of the set of exceptional points. In particular, we show that the dimension of this set may be any number between 0 and 1. Similar results are obtained for two ``natural'' subsets of the set of exceptional points. Furthermore, the paper calculates the dimension of several sets of points, defined by certain constraints on their binary expansion.

Abstract:Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers into the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. At the open problem session of the Workshop ``Densities and their application'', held at St. Étienne in July 2013, G. Grekos asked a question whether there is a ``nice'' abstract upper density, whose the family of null sets is precisely a given ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, where ``nice'' would mean the properties of the familiar densities consider in number theory. In 2018, M. Di Nasso and R. Jin (Acta Arith. 185 (2018), no. 4) showed that the answer is positive for the summable ideals (for instance, the family of finite sets and the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge) when ``nice'' density means translation invariant and rich density (i.e. density which is onto the unit interval). In this paper we extend their result to all ideals with the Baire property.

Uniform density in matroids, matrices and graphs

Abstract:We give new characterizations for the class of uniformly dense matroids and study applications of these characterizations to graphic and real representable matroids. We show that a matroid is uniformly dense if and only if its base polytope contains a point with constant coordinates. As a main application, we derive new spectral, structural and classification results for uniformly dense graphs. In particular, we show that connected regular uniformly dense graphs are $1$-tough and thus contain a (near-)perfect matching. As a second application, we show that uniform density can be recognized in polynomial time for real representable matroids, which includes graphs. Finally, we show that strictly uniformly dense real represented matroids can be represented by projection matrices with a constant diagonal and that they are parametrized by a subvariety of the Grassmannian.

Abstract:The classical density topology is an extension of the natural topology on the real line, as the interior of arbitrary Lebesgue measurable set A is contained in the set of density points of A . Also each density point of A belongs to the closure of A for arbitrary measurable set A . In this paper, we concentrate on lower density operators for which the inclusions mentioned above are not fulfilled. In the first part, examples of such lower density operators generated by measure-preserving bijections are given. There are introduced three conditions to investigate lower density operators for which only the second inclusion holds. In the second part, the concept of operator D introduced by K. Kuratowski is applied to the characterization of such operators.

Abstract:Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

Abstract:The weak constant density condition is a quantitative regularity property originally investigated by David and Semmes in their foundational work on uniform rectifiability. Roughly speaking, a space satisfies this condition if in \textit{most} balls, the space supports a measure with \textit{nearly constant} density in a neighborhood of scales and locations. In this paper, we prove that uniformly rectifiable metric spaces satisfy the weak constant density condition, an extension of a theorem of David and Semmes. In order to do this, we first prove a strengthened version of a separate theorem of David and Semmes which weakly controls the oscillation of the means of $L^\infty$ functions over normed balls.

Abstract:We prove that the highest density of non-overlapping translates of a given centrally symmetric convex domain relative to its outer parallel domain of given outer radius is attained by a lattice packing in the Euclidean plane. This generalizes some earlier (classical) results. Sharp upper bounds are proved for the analogue problem on congruent circular disks in the spherical (resp., hyperbolic) plane and on congruent balls in Euclidean $3$-space.

Abstract:We identify an assumption on linear forms $\phi_1, \dots, \phi_k: \mathbb{F}_p^n \to \mathbb{F}_p$ that is much weaker than approximate joint equidistribution on the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ and is in a sense almost as weak as linear independence, but which guarantees that every subset of $\{0,1\}^n$ on which none of $\phi_1, \dots, \phi_k$ has full image has a density which tends to 0 with $k$. This density is at most quasipolynomially small in $k$, a bound that is necessarily close to sharp.

Abstract:An extension of Szemerédi's Theorem is proved for sets of positive density in approximate lattices in general locally compact and second countable abelian groups. As a consequence, we establish a recent conjecture of Klick, Strungaru and Tcaciuc. Via a novel version of Furstenberg's Correspondence principle, which should be of independent interest, we show that our Szemerédi Theorems can be deduced from a general \emph{transverse} multiple recurrence theorem, which we establish using recent works of Austin.

Abstract:An r ‐daisy is an r ‐uniform hypergraph consisting of the six r ‐sets formed by taking the union of an (r−2) ‐set with each of the 2‐sets of a disjoint 4‐set. Bollobás, Leader and Malvenuto, and also Bukh, conjectured that the Turán density of the r ‐daisy tends to zero as r→∞ . In this paper we disprove this conjecture. Adapting our construction, we are also able to disprove a folklore conjecture about Turán densities of hypercubes. For fixed d and large n , we show that the smallest set of vertices of the n ‐dimensional hypercube Qn that intersects every copy of Qd has asymptotic density strictly below 1/(d+1) , for all d⩾8 . In fact, we show that this asymptotic density is at most cd , for some constant c<1 . As a consequence, we obtain similar bounds for the edge‐Turán densities of hypercubes. We also answer some related questions of Johnson and Talbot, and disprove a conjecture made by Bukh and by Griggs and Lu on poset densities.

Abstract:The present work concerns generalized convex sets in the real multi-dimensional Euclidean space, known as weakly $1$-convex and weakly $1$-semiconvex sets. An open set is called weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) if, through every boundary point of the set, there passes a straight line (a closed ray) not intersecting the set. A closed set is called weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) if it is approximated from the outside by a family of open weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) sets. A point of the complement of a set to the whole space is a $1$-nonconvexity ($1$-nonsemiconvexity) point of the set if every straight line passing through the point (every ray emanating from the point) intersects the set. It is proved that if the collection of all $1$-nonconvexity ($1$-nonsemiconvexity) points corresponding to an open weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) set is non-empty, then it is open. It is also proved that the non-empty interior of a closed weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) set in the space is weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex).

Abstract:Consider a positive Borel measure on a locally compact group. We define a notion of uniform density for such a measure, which is based on a group invariant introduced by Leptin in 1966. We then restrict to unimodular amenable groups and to translation bounded measures. In that case our density notion coincides with the well-known Beurling density from Fourier analysis, also known as Banach density from dynamical systems theory. We use Leptin densities for a geometric proof of the model set density formula, which expresses the density of a uniform regular model set in terms of the volume of its window, and for a proof of uniform mean almost periodicity of such model sets.

Abstract:A set of complex numbers is called invariant if it is closed under addition and multiplication, namely, for any we have and . For each the smallest invariant set containing consists of all possible sums , where runs over all finite nonempty subsets of the set of positive integers and for each . In this paper, we prove that for the set is everywhere dense in if and only if and is not a quadratic algebraic integer. More precisely, we show that if is a transcendental number, then there is a positive integer such that the sumset is everywhere dense in for either or . Similarly, if is an algebraic number of degree , then there are positive integers such that the sumset is everywhere dense in for . For quadratic and some special quartic algebraic numbers it is shown that a similar sumset of three sets cannot be dense. In each of these two cases the density of in is established by a different method: for those special quartic numbers, it is possible to take a sumset of four sets.

Abstract:For a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^m$, we have two indexes given under simple parameters of the set $K$ (these parameters go back to Besicovitch and Taylor in the late 50's). In the present paper we prove that with the exception of a single extreme value for each index, we have the following elementary estimate on how fast the ratio in the strong density theorem of Saks will tend to one \[ \frac{|R\cap K|}{|R|}>1-o\bigg(\frac{1}{|\log d(R)|}\bigg) \qquad \text{for a.e.} \ \ x\in K \ \ \text{and for} \ \ d(R)\to 0 \] (provided $x\in R$, where $R$ is an interval in $\mathbb{R}^m$, $d$ stands for the diameter and $|\cdot|$ is the Lebesgue measure). This work is a natural sequence of [3] and constitutes a contribution to Problem 146 of Ulam [5, p. 245] (see also [8, p.78]) and Erdös' Scottish Book `Problems' [5, Chapter 4, pp. 27-33], since it is known that no general statement can be made on how fast the density will tend to one.

Abstract:We establish weak-type (1, 1) bounds for the maximal function associated with ergodic averaging operators modeled on a wide class of thin deterministic sets B . As a corollary we obtain the corresponding pointwise convergence result on . This contributes yet another counterexample for the conjecture of Rosenblatt and Wierdl from 1991 asserting the failure of pointwise convergence on of ergodic averages along arithmetic sets with zero Banach density. The second main result is a multiparameter pointwise ergodic theorem in the spirit of Dunford and Zygmund along B on , , which is derived by establishing uniform oscillation estimates and certain vector-valued maximal estimates.

Abstract:For a set $A \subset \mathbb{N}$ we characterize in terms of its density when there exists an infinite set $B \subset \mathbb{N}$ and $t \in \{0,1\}$ such that $B+B \subset A-t$, where $B+B : =\{b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2 \in B\}$. Specifically, when the lower density $\underline{d}(A) >1/2$ or the upper density $\overline{d}(A)> 3/4$, the existence of such a set $B\subset \mathbb{N}$ and $t\in \{0,1\}$ is assured. Furthermore, whenever $\underline{d}(A) > 3/4$ or $\overline{d}(A)>5/6$, we show that the shift $t$ is unnecessary and we also provide examples to show that these bounds are sharp. Finally, we construct a syndetic three-coloring of the natural numbers that does not contain a monochromatic $B+B+t$ for any infinite set $B \subset \mathbb{N}$ and number $t \in \mathbb{N}$.
