Abstract:We extend the famous result of Katok and Zemlyakov on the density of half-infinite geodesics on finite flat rational surfaces to half-infinite geodesics on a finite polycube translation $3$-manifold. We also extend this original result to establish a weak uniformity statement.

Abstract:We introduce a new method to establish time-quantitative density in flat dynamical systems. First we give a shorter and different proof of our earlier result that a half-infinite geodesic on an arbitrary finite polysquare surface P is superdense on P if the slope of the geodesic is a badly approximable number. We then adapt our method to study time-quantitative density of half-infinite geodesics on algebraic polyrectangle surfaces.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a compact connected $C^{\infty}$ surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one. We show that set of geodesics without strips forms a dense set of orbits in the unit tangent bundle. This fact was known assuming no focal points as a consequence of a result of Coudène and Shapira. They showed that flat strips are periodic and hence form a set of zero measure in the unit tangent bundle.

Abstract:Following Beck-Chen, we say a flow $\phi_t$ on a metric space $(X, d)$ is superdense if there is a $c > 0$ such that for every $x \in X$, and every $T>0$, the trajectory $\{\phi_t x\}_{0 \le t \le cT}$ is $1/T$-dense in $X$. We show that a linear flow on a translation surface is superdense if the associated Teichmüller geodesic is bounded. Conversely, if the linear flow is superdense, we show that along the Teichmüller geodesic, the diameter of the surface remains bounded. This generalizes work of Beck-Chen on lattice surfaces, and is reminiscent of work of Masur on unique ergodicity.

Abstract:We generalize a criterion for the density property of Stein manifolds. As an application, we give a new, simple proof of the fact that the Danielewski surfaces have the algebraic density property. Furthermore, we have found new examples of Stein manifolds with the density property.

Abstract:We establish various analogs of the Kronecker-Weyl equidistribution theorem that can be considered higher-dimensional versions of results established in our earlier investigation of the discrete 2-circle problem studied in 1969 by Veech. Whereas the Veech problem can be viewed as one of geodesic flow on a 2-dimensional flat surface, here we study geodesic flow in higher-dimensional flat manifolds. This is more challenging, as the overwhelming majority of the available proof techniques for non-integrable flat systems are based on arguments in dimension 2. For higher dimensions, we need a new approach.

Abstract:We prove a formula, first obtained by Kleban, Simmons and Ziff using conformal field theory methods, for the (renormalized) density of a critical percolation cluster in the upper half-plane "anchored" to a point on the real line. The proof is inspired by the method of images. We also show that more general bulk-boundary connection probabilities have well-defined, scale-covariant scaling limits, and prove a formula for the scaling limit of the (renormalized) density of the critical percolation gasket in any domain conformally equivalent to the unit disk.

Abstract:An r ‐daisy is an r ‐uniform hypergraph consisting of the six r ‐sets formed by taking the union of an (r−2) ‐set with each of the 2‐sets of a disjoint 4‐set. Bollobás, Leader and Malvenuto, and also Bukh, conjectured that the Turán density of the r ‐daisy tends to zero as r→∞ . In this paper we disprove this conjecture. Adapting our construction, we are also able to disprove a folklore conjecture about Turán densities of hypercubes. For fixed d and large n , we show that the smallest set of vertices of the n ‐dimensional hypercube Qn that intersects every copy of Qd has asymptotic density strictly below 1/(d+1) , for all d⩾8 . In fact, we show that this asymptotic density is at most cd , for some constant c<1 . As a consequence, we obtain similar bounds for the edge‐Turán densities of hypercubes. We also answer some related questions of Johnson and Talbot, and disprove a conjecture made by Bukh and by Griggs and Lu on poset densities.

Abstract:For $n\geq 3$, let $\mathscr{M} \subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a compact hypersurface, parametrized by a homogeneous function of degree $d\in \mathbb{R}_{>1}$, with non-vanishing curvature away from the origin. Consider the number $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ of rationals $\mathbf{a}/q$, with denominator $q\in [Q,2Q)$ and $\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{Z}^{n-1}$, lying at a distance at most $\delta/q$ from $\mathscr{M}$. This manuscript provides essentially sharp estimates for $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ throughout the range $\delta \in (Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$ for $d>1+\tfrac{1}{2n-3}$. Our result is a first of its kind for hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature ($d>2$) and those which are rough (meaning not even $C^2$ at the origin which happens when $d<2$). An interesting outcome of our investigation is the understanding of a `geometric' term $(\delta/Q)^{(n-1)/d}Q^n$ (stemming from a so-called Knapp cap), arising in addition to the usual probabilistic term $\delta Q^n$; the sum of these terms determines the size of $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ for $\delta\in(Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$. Consequences of our result concern the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on `rough' hypersurfaces -- going beyond the recent break-through of Beresnevich and L. Yang. Further, we establish smooth extensions of Serre's dimension growth conjecture.

Pulsar Parallaxes at 5 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array

Abstract:We present the first pulsar parallaxes measured with phase-referenced pulsar VLBI observations at 5 GHz. Due to the steep spectra of pulsars, previous astrometric measurements have been at lower frequencies. However, the strongest pulsars can be observed at 5 GHz, offering the benefit of lower combined ionospheric and tropospheric phase errors, which usually limit VLBI astrometric accuracy. The pulsars B0329+54, B0355+54 and B1929+10 were observed for 7 epochs spread evenly over 2 years. For B0329+54, large systematic errors lead to only an upper limit on the parallax (pi < 1.5 mas). A new proper motion and parallax were measured for B0355+54 (pi = 0.91 +- 0.16 mas), implying a distance of 1.04+0.21-0.16 kpc and a transverse velocity of 61+12-9 km/s. The parallax and proper motion for B1929+10 were significantly improved (pi = 2.77 +- 0.07 mas), yielding a distance of 361+10-8 pc and a transverse velocity of 177+4-5 km/s. We demonstrate that the astrometric errors are correlated with the angular separation between the phase reference calibrator and the target source, with significantly lower errors at 5 GHz compared to 1.6 GHz. Finally, based on our new distance determinations for B1929+10 and B0355+54, we derive or constrain the luminosities of each pulsar at high energies. We show that, for thermal emission models, the emitting area for X-rays from PSR B1929+10 is roughly consistent with the canonical size for a heated polar cap, and that the conversion of spin-down power to gamma-ray luminosity in B0355+54 must be low. The new proper motion for B1929+10 also implies that its progenitor is unlikely to have been the binary companion of the runaway O-star zeta-Ophiuchi.

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert asked the question to determine the density of the densest tetrahedron packings. However, up to now no mathematician knows the density δt(T) of the densest translative tetrahedron packings and the density δc(T) of the densest congruent tetrahedron packings. This paper presents a local method to estimate the density of the densest translative packings of a general convex solid. As an application, we obtain the upper bound in0.3673469⋯≤δt(T)≤0.3840610⋯, where the lower bound was established by Groemer in 1962, which corrected a mistake of Minkowski. For the density δt(C) of the densest translative cuboctahedron packings, we obtain the upper bound in0.9183673⋯≤δt(C)≤0.9601527⋯. In both cases we conjecture the lower bounds to be the correct answer.

Abstract:We prove the density property for generalized Calogero--Moser spaces with inner degrees of freedom. This allows us to describe the holomorphic automorphism group of these complex affine manifolds. These generalized Calogero--Moser spaces can also be understood as quiver varieties corresponding to moduli spaces of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ instantons on a non-commutative $\mathbb{R}^4$.

Abstract:We prove that the highest density of non-overlapping translates of a given centrally symmetric convex domain relative to its outer parallel domain of given outer radius is attained by a lattice packing in the Euclidean plane. This generalizes some earlier (classical) results. Sharp upper bounds are proved for the analogue problem on congruent circular disks in the spherical (resp., hyperbolic) plane and on congruent balls in Euclidean $3$-space.

The Turán Density of 4-Uniform Tight Cycles

Abstract:For any uniformity $r$ and residue $k$ modulo $r$, we give an exact characterization of the $r$-uniform hypergraphs that homomorphically avoid tight cycles of length $k$ modulo $r$, in terms of colorings of $(r-1)$-tuples of vertices. This generalizes the result that a graph avoids all odd closed walks if and only if it is bipartite, as well as a result of Kam\v cev, Letzter, and Pokrovskiy in uniformity 3. In fact, our characterization applies to a much larger class of families than those of the form $\mathscr C_k^{(r)}=\{\text{$r$-uniform tight cycles of length $k$ modulo $r$}\}$. We also outline a general strategy to prove that, if $\mathscr C$ is a family of tight-cycle-like hypergraphs (including but not limited to the families $\mathscr C_k^{(r)}$) for which the above characterization applies, then all sufficiently long $C\in \mathscr C$ will have the same Turán density. We demonstrate an application of this framework, proving that there exists an integer $L_0$ such that for every $L>L_0$ not divisible by 4, the tight cycle $C^{(4)}_L$ has Turán density $1/2$.

Abstract:In this note we announce a result for vector fields on three-dimensional manifolds: those who are singular hyperbolic or exhibit a homoclinic tangency form a dense subset of the space of $C^1$-vector fields. This answers a conjecture by Palis. The argument uses an extension for local fibered flows of Mañé and Pujals-Sambarino's theorems about the uniform contraction of one-dimensional dominated bundles. Sur la densité de l'hyperbolicité singulière pour les champs de vecteurs en dimension trois : une conjecture de Palis Dans cette note, nous annonçons un résultat portant sur les champs de vecteurs des variétés de dimension $3$ : ceux qui vérifient l'hyperbolicité singulière ou qui possèdent une tangence homocline forment un sous-ensemble dense de l'espace des champs de vecteurs $C^1$. Ceci répond à une conjecture de Palis. La démonstration utilise une généralisation pour les flots fibrés locaux des théorèmes de Mañé et Pujals-Sambarino traitant de la contraction uniforme de fibrés unidimensionnels dominés.
