Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano fourfold admitting a conic bundle structure. We show that $X$ is toric if and only if $X$ admits an amplified endomorphism; in this case, $X$ is a rational variety.

Abstract:Let f : Y → X be a finite morphism between Fano manifolds Y and X such that the Fano index of X is greater than 1. On the one hand, when both X and Y are fourfolds of Picard number 1, we show that the degree of f is bounded in terms of X and Y unless X ≅ P 4 ; hence, such X does not admit any non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism. On the other hand, when X = Y is either a fourfold or a del Pezzo manifold, we prove that, if f is an int-amplified endomorphism, then X is toric. Moreover, we classify all the singular quadrics admitting non-isomorphic endomorphisms.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a klt projective variety with numerically trivial canonical divisor. A surjective endomorphism $f:X\to X$ is amplified (resp.~quasi-amplified) if $f^*D-D$ is ample (resp.~big) for some Cartier divisor $D$. We show that after iteration and equivariant birational contractions, an quasi-amplified endomorphism will descend to an amplified endomorphism. As an application, when $X$ is Hyperkähler, $f$ is quasi-amplified if and only if it is of positive entropy. In both cases, $f$ has Zariski dense periodic points. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we give and compare several cohomological and geometric criteria of amplified endomorphisms and endomorphisms with countable and Zariski dense periodic points (after an uncountable field extension).

Abstract:Let $X$ be a rationally connected smooth projective variety of dimension $n$. We show that $X$ is a toric variety if and only if $X$ admits an int-amplified endomorphism with totally invariant ramification divisor. We also show that $X\cong (\mathbb{P}^1)^{\times n}$ if and only if $X$ admits a surjective endomorphism $f$ such that the eigenvalues of $f^*|_{\text{N}^1(X)}$ (without counting multiplicities) are $n$ distinct real numbers greater than $1$.

Toric models of smooth Fano threefolds

Abstract:We prove that a general rational smooth Fano threefold admits a toric model. More precisely, for a general rational smooth Fano threefold $X$, we show the existence of a boundary divisor $D$ for which $(X,D)\simeq_{\rm cbir} (\mathbb{P}^3,H_0+H_1+H_2+H_3)$, where the $H_i$'s are the coordinate hyperplanes. In particular, a general rational smooth Fano threefold has birational complexity zero. We argue that the three conditions: rationality, generality, and smoothness are indeed necessary for the theorem.

Polarized endomorphisms of Fano varieties with complements

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Fano type variety and $(X,\Delta)$ be a log Calabi-Yau pair with $\Delta$ a Weil divisor. If $(X,\Delta)$ admits a polarized endomorphism, then we show that $(X,\Delta)$ is a finite quotient of a toric pair. Along the way, we prove that a klt Calabi-Yau pair $(X,\Delta)$ with standard coefficients that admits a polarized endomorphism is the quotient of an abelian variety.

Abstract:Rationality is not a constructible property in families. In this article, we consider stronger notions of rationality and study their behavior in families of Fano varieties. We first show that being toric is a constructible property in families of Fano varieties. The second main result of this article concerns an intermediate notion that lies between toric and rational varieties, namely cluster type varieties. A cluster type $\mathbb Q$-factorial Fano variety contains an open dense algebraic torus, but the variety does not need to be endowed with a torus action. We prove that, in families of $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal Fano varieties, being of cluster type is a constructible condition. As a consequence, we show that there are finitely many smooth families parametrizing $n$-dimensional smooth cluster type Fano varieties.

Abstract:Beilinson first gave a resolution of the diagonal for $\mathbb{P}^n$. Generalizing this, a modification of the cellular resolution of the diagonal given by Bayer-Popescu- Sturmfels gives a (non-minimal, in general) virtual resolution of the diagonal for smooth projective toric varieties and toric Deligne-Mumford stacks which are a global quotient of a smooth projective variety by a finite abelian group. In the past year, Hanlon-Hicks-Lazarev gave in particular a symmetric, minimal resolution of the diagonal for smooth projective toric varieties. We give implications for exceptional collections on smooth projective toric Fano varieties in dimension 4. We find that for 73 out of 124 smooth projective toric Fano 4-folds, the Hanlon-Hicks-Lazarev resolution of the diagonal yields a full strong exceptional collection of line bundles.

Classifying Fano 4-folds with a rational fibration onto a 3-fold

Abstract:We study smooth, complex Fano 4-folds X with a rational contraction onto a 3-fold, namely a rational map X-->Y that factors as a sequence of flips X-->X' followed by a surjective morphism X'->Y with connected fibers, where Y is normal, projective, and dim Y=3. We show that if X has a rational contraction onto a 3-fold and X is not a product of del Pezzo surfaces, then the Picard number rho(X) of X is at most 9; this bound is sharp. As an application, we show that every Fano 4-fold X with rho(X)=12 is isomorphic to a product of surfaces, thus improving the result by the first named author that shows the same for rho(X)>12. We also give a classification result for Fano 4-folds X, not products of surfaces, having a "special" rational contraction X-->Y with dim Y=3, rho(X)-rho(Y)=2, and rho(X)>6; we show that there are only three possible families. Then we prove that the first family exists if rho(X)=7, and that the second family exists if and only if rho(X)=7. This provides the first examples of Fano 4-folds with rho(X)>6 different from products of del Pezzo surfaces and from the Fano models of the blow-up of P^4 in points. We also construct three new families with rho(X)=6. Finally we show that if a Fano 4-fold X has Lefschetz defect delta(X)=2, then rho(X) is at most 6; this bound is again sharp.

Advances in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics

Abstract:Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be understood by the various restrictions of a line bundle with a section that defines the hypersurface. These general toric geometry discussions give rise to a computational scheme for the details of a toric morphism and the induced fibration of toric hypersurfaces therein. We apply this scheme to study the family of complex 4-dimensional elliptic Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces that appear in a recent work of Braun-Candelas-dlOssa-Grassi. Some directions for future work are listed in the end.
Structures theorems and applications of non-isomorphic surjective endomorphisms of smooth projective threefolds

Abstract:Let $f:X\to X$ be a non-isomorphic (i.e., $\text{deg } f>1$) surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold $X$. We prove that any birational minimal model program becomes $f$-equivariant after iteration, provided that $f$ is $\delta$-primitive. Here $\delta$-primitive means that there is no $f$-equivariant (after iteration) dominant rational map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$ to a positive lower-dimensional projective variety $Y$ such that the first dynamical degree remains unchanged. This way, we further determine the building blocks of $f$. As the first application, we prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for every non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold. As the second application, we reduce the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for $f$ to a terminal threefold with only $f$-equivariant Fano contractions.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano threefold over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Assume that $|-K_X|$ is very ample and each of the index and the Picard number is equal to one. We prove that $3 \leq g \leq 12$ and $g \neq 11$ for the genus $g$ of $X$. Moreover, we show that there exists no smooth curve on $X$ along which the blowup is Fano.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety and $f\colon X\to X$ a finite surjective endomorphism. We consider Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (ZDO), and Adelic Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (AZO). We consider also Kawaguchi-Silverman Conjecture (KSC) asserting that the (first) dynamical degree $d_1(f)$ of $f$ equals the arithmetic degree $\alpha_f(P)$ at a point $P$ having Zariski dense $f$-forward orbit. Assuming $X$ is a smooth affine surface, such that the log Kodaira dimension $\bar{\kappa}(X)$ is non-negative (resp. the étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$ is infinite), we confirm AZO, (hence) ZDO, and KSC (when $\operatorname{deg}(f)\geq 2$) (resp. AZO and hence ZDO). We also prove ZDO (resp. AZO and hence ZDO) for every surjective endomorphism on any projective variety with ''larger'' first dynamical degree (resp. every dominant endomorphism of any semiabelian variety).

Abstract:We construct 4 di erent families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1, which contain cylinders, i.e., Zariski open subsets of the form Z x A1, where Z is a quasiprojective variety. The affi ne cones over such a fourfold admit eff ective Ga-actions. Similar constructions of cylindrical Fano threefolds were done previously in our papers jointly with Takashi Kishimoto.

Abstract:For $n\geq 4$, let $X$ be a complex smooth Fano $n$-fold whose minimal anticanonical degree of non-free rational curves on $X$ is at least $n-2$. We classify extremal contractions of such varieties. As an application, we obtain a classification of Fano fourfolds with pseudoindex and Picard number greater than one. Combining this result with previous results, we complete the classification of smooth Fano $n$-folds with pseudoindex at least $n-2$ and Picard number greater than one. This can be seen as a generalization of various previous results. We also discuss the relations between pseudoindex and other invariants of Fano varieties.
