Abstract:We describe the moduli space of rational curves on smooth Fano varieties of coindex 3. For varieties of dimension 5 or greater, we prove the moduli space has a single irreducible component for each effective numerical class of curves. For varieties of dimension 4, we describe families of rational curves in terms of Fujita's $a$-invariant. Our results verify Lehmann and Tanimoto's Geometric Manin's Conjecture for all smooth coindex 3 Fano varieties over the complex numbers.

Abstract:We study the spaces of rational curves on Fano threefolds with Gorenstein terminal singularities. We generalize the results regarding Geometric Manin's Conjecture for smooth Fano threefolds, including the classification of subvarieties with higher a-invariants and Movable Bend-and-Break lemma. We also show Geometric Manin's Conjecture for some singular del Pezzo threefolds.

Abstract:We prove that a general rational smooth Fano threefold admits a toric model. More precisely, for a general rational smooth Fano threefold $X$, we show the existence of a boundary divisor $D$ for which $(X,D)\simeq_{\rm cbir} (\mathbb{P}^3,H_0+H_1+H_2+H_3)$, where the $H_i$'s are the coordinate hyperplanes. In particular, a general rational smooth Fano threefold has birational complexity zero. We argue that the three conditions: rationality, generality, and smoothness are indeed necessary for the theorem.

Abstract:We classify families of free rational curves on all smooth Fano threefolds over the complex numbers. In particular, we prove the family of very free rational curves representing any fixed numerical curve class is either irreducible or empty. This proves Geometric Manin's Conjecture in dimension three. For general Fano threefolds of each deformation type, our results allow us to explicitly count the number of components of the moduli space of irreducible, geometrically rational curves, which may not be free, representing any numerical class.

Abstract:Over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, we classify smooth Fano threefolds of Picard number one whose anti-canonical linear systems are not very ample. Abstract:In this paper I study the rationality problem for Fano threefolds $X\subset \p^{p+1}$ of genus $p$, that are Gorenstein, with at most canonical singularities. The main results are: (1) a trigonal Fano threefold of genus $p$ is rational as soon as $p\geq 8$ (this result has already been obtained in \cite {PCS}, but we give here an independent proof); (2) a non--trigonal Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 7$ containing a plane is rational; (3) any Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 17$ is rational; (4) a Fano threefold of genus $p\geq 12$ containing an ordinary line $\ell$ in its smooth locus is rational.

Abstract:A famous theorem of Shokurov states that a general anticanonical divisor of a smooth Fano threefold is a smooth K3 surface. This is quite surprising since there are several examples where the base locus of the anticanonical system has codimension two. In this paper we show that for four-dimensional Fano manifolds the behaviour is completely opposite: if the base locus is a normal surface, hence has codimension two, all the anticanonical divisors are singular.

Abstract:We study Fano manifolds $X$ admitting an unsplit dominating family of rational curves and we prove that the Generalized Mukai Conjecture holds if $X$ has pseudoindex $i_X = (\dim X)/3$ or dimension $\dim X=6$. We also show that this conjecture is true for all Fano manifolds with $i_X > (\dim X)/3$.

Abstract:We analyse the local structure of the K-moduli space of Fano varieties at a toric singular K-polystable Fano 3-fold, which deforms to smooth Fano 3-folds with anticanonical volume 28 and Picard rank 4. In particular, by constructing an algebraic deformation of this toric singular Fano, we show that the irreducible component of K-moduli parametrising these smooth Fano 3-folds is a rational surface.

Abstract:In this paper, we completely classify the canonical threefolds on the Noether line with geometric genus $p_g \ge 11$ by studying their moduli spaces. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, estimate the number of its irreducible components and prove the dimension formula. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components grows linearly with the geometric genus, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate the canonical threefolds on the Noether line to the simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces by proving a conjecture stated by two of the authors in [CP].

Assume that $X$ contains a divisor $A$, which is isomorphic to a rational homogeneous space with Picard number one, such that the conormal bundle $\mathscr{N}^*_{A/X}$ is ample over $A$. Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

Classifying Fano 4-folds with a rational fibration onto a 3-fold

Abstract:We study smooth, complex Fano 4-folds X with a rational contraction onto a 3-fold, namely a rational map X-->Y that factors as a sequence of flips X-->X' followed by a surjective morphism X'->Y with connected fibers, where Y is normal, projective, and dim Y=3. We show that if X has a rational contraction onto a 3-fold and X is not a product of del Pezzo surfaces, then the Picard number rho(X) of X is at most 9; this bound is sharp. As an application, we show that every Fano 4-fold X with rho(X)=12 is isomorphic to a product of surfaces, thus improving the result by the first named author that shows the same for rho(X)>12. We also give a classification result for Fano 4-folds X, not products of surfaces, having a "special" rational contraction X-->Y with dim Y=3, rho(X)-rho(Y)=2, and rho(X)>6; we show that there are only three possible families. Then we prove that the first family exists if rho(X)=7, and that the second family exists if and only if rho(X)=7. This provides the first examples of Fano 4-folds with rho(X)>6 different from products of del Pezzo surfaces and from the Fano models of the blow-up of P^4 in points. We also construct three new families with rho(X)=6. Finally we show that if a Fano 4-fold X has Lefschetz defect delta(X)=2, then rho(X) is at most 6; this bound is again sharp.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of Fano threefolds. We prove a general non-emptiness criterion for moduli spaces, which applies to the cases of prime Fano threefolds of index $1$, degree $10 \leq d \leq 18$, and index $2$, degree $d \leq 4$. In the second part, we focus on cubic threefolds. We show the irreducibility of the moduli spaces, and that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps from the moduli spaces to the intermediate Jacobian are Fano varieties. When the dimension is sufficiently large, we further show that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps are stably birational equivalent to each other. As an application of our methods, we prove Conjecture A.1 in [FGLZ24] concerning the existence of Lagrangian subvarieties in moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of very general cubic fourfolds.
