Abstract:Let X be a Fano manifold with Picard number one such that the tangent bundle T_X is big. If X admits a rational curve with trivial normal bundle, we show that X is isomorphic to the del Pezzo threefold of degree five.
Algebraic Geometry
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: Under specific conditions, whether Fano manifolds can be uniquely determined. Specifically, the author studied Fano manifolds with big tangent bundles and explored the geometric properties of these manifolds. ### Research Background Fano manifolds are an important class of algebraic varieties, and their anti - canonical class \(-K_X\) is ample. Usually, Fano manifolds can be classified by their anti - canonical classes. However, by assuming the positivity of the tangent bundle, Fano manifolds with rich geometric structures can be further identified. This idea first appeared in Mori's work on the characterization of projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles [Mor79] and has been continuously studied by many authors in the past four decades. ### Main Problem The main problems in this paper are: - **Theorem 1.1**: Let \(X\) be a Fano manifold with Picard number 1, and its tangent bundle \(T_X\) is big. If \(X\) contains a rational curve with a trivial normal bundle, then \(X\) is isomorphic to the del Pezzo three - fold \(V_5\) of degree 5, that is, a smooth 3 - dimensional linear section of the Grassmannian \(Gr(2, 5)\subset\mathbb{P}^9\) in its Plücker embedding. ### Solution To prove this theorem, the author adopted the following strategies: 1. **Assumptions and Lemmas**: First, assume that \(X\) is a Fano manifold with Picard number 1 and its tangent bundle \(T_X\) is big. Consider a family of minimal rational curves \(K\), such that for a general curve \(l\) in \(K\), we have \(-K_X\cdot l = 2\). 2. **Total Dual VMRT**: Construct the total dual VMRT \(\check{C}\subset\mathbb{P}(T_X)\) associated with the family \(K\). At a general point \(x\in X\), the fiber \(\check{C}_x\) is the union of several hyperplanes, and each hyperplane corresponds to a curve passing through the point \(x\). 3. **The Influence of the Bigness Assumption**: Through the bigness assumption, the author deduced that the index of \(X\) is 2, that is, \(-K_X = 2A\), where \(A\) is an ample Cartier divisor. This shows that the rational curve \(l\) is a "straight line" and the family \(K\) is inseparable. 4. **The Rank of the Distribution**: Next, the author considers the saturated sub - sheaf \(F\subset T_X\) spanned by the tangent directions of the minimal rational curves in the family \(K\). The goal is to prove that the rank of this distribution is 3 and \(c_1(F)=c_1(-K_X)\). If the dimension of \(X\) is at least 4, then according to a theorem of Peternell [Pet12], the generic ampleness of \(T_X\) will lead to a contradiction. 5. **Technical Results**: The main technical result is to prove that at a general point \(x\in X\), the total tangent space \(D_x\subset\mathbb{P}(\Omega_X, x)\) is a linear plane. This conclusion is divided into two steps: - Step 1: Use the bigness assumption and projective duality to prove that the irreducible components of \(D_x\) are two - dimensional cones with vertices at the points of VMRT \(C_x\). - Step 2: The more difficult part is to prove that these cones are actually linear planes. ### Conclusion Through the above steps, the author finally proved Theorem 1.1, that is, for a Fano manifold \(X\) with a big tangent bundle, if it contains a rational curve with a trivial normal bundle, then \(X\) must be isomorphic.
