Abstract:Freeform holographic optical elements (HOEs), due to the high degrees of design freedom, can be used to enhance performance of display systems. In this Letter, we propose a method for designing and fabricating freeform HOEs on curved optical surfaces that can be utilized to implement curved augmented reality (AR) displays. In our method, the phase profile of the freeform HOE laminated on a curved surface is first optimized to achieve a good image performance. Then, two recording wavefronts are optimized to produce the phase profile of the freeform HOE on the curved surface with a high uniformity of diffraction efficiency. The two recording wavefronts used for a curved substrate are converted into two wavefronts for a planar substrate based on a conversion relationship between the curved HOE and the planar HOE. A home-built holographic printer is used to fabricate freeform HOEs on a flat substrate, and then the freeform HOEs are laminated onto a curved optical surface. Two interesting AR display systems are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design and fabrication method.

Abstract:We propose a methodfor designing and fabricating freeform HOEs on curved optical substrates that can be utilized to implement curved augmented reality (AR) displays. Compared with conventional HOEs, freeform HOEs can enhance image performance and enlarge degrees of freedom in design. In our method, the phase profiles of the freeform HOE on the curved surface are first optimized to achieve good image performance. Then, recording wavefronts are optimized to improve uniformity of diffraction efficiency and converted into wavefronts for a planar substrate. The conversion relationship between curved HOEs and planar HOEs is analyzed. A holographic printer has been developed for fabricating freeform HOEs on a flat substrate temporarily, which are then pasted onto the curved substrate. A simple application case of curved freeform HOE is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Computer-generated holograms (CGH) have been widely used to evaluate symmetrical aspherical surfaces in combination with Fizeau interferometers. Because the CGH can create any wavefront shape, it can also be used in unsymmetrical aspherical surfaces testing. Taking the cubic surface as an example, this paper gives a thinking of testing unsymmetrical surfaces. First we deduce the expression of the aberration for the cubic phase when propagating and the CGH null lens design has been carried out while taking into consideration the higher order aberrations. The separation of the diffraction orders of the CGH is discussed. We fabricated the CGH using e-beam photography and tested a 13-mm diameter cubic surface.

Abstract:State-of-the-art diffusion models can generate highly realistic images based on various conditioning like text, segmentation, and depth. However, an essential aspect often overlooked is the specific camera geometry used during image capture. The influence of different optical systems on the final scene appearance is frequently overlooked. This study introduces a framework that intimately integrates a text-to-image diffusion model with the particular lens geometry used in image rendering. Our method is based on a per-pixel coordinate conditioning method, enabling the control over the rendering geometry. Notably, we demonstrate the manipulation of curvature properties, achieving diverse visual effects, such as fish-eye, panoramic views, and spherical texturing using a single diffusion model.

Abstract:Starting from well-known absolute instruments for perfect imaging, we introduce a type of rotational-symmetrical compact closed manifolds, namely geodesic lenses. We demonstrate that light rays confined on geodesic lenses are closed trajectories. While for optical waves, the spectrum of geodesic lens is (at least approximately) degenerate and equidistant with numerical methods. Based on this property, we show a periodical evolution of optical waves and quantum waves on geodesic lenses. Moreover, we fabricate two geodesic lenses in sub-micrometer scale, where curved light rays are observed with high accurate precision. Our results may offer a new platform to investigate light propagation on curved surfaces.

Abstract:Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) have widespread applications in optics, ranging from point spread function engineering to holographic display. Conventionally, DOE design relies on Cartesian simulation grids, resulting in square features in the final design. Unfortunately, Cartesian grids provide an anisotropic sampling of the plane, and the resulting square features can be challenging to fabricate with high fidelity using methods such as photolithography. To address these limitations, we explore the use of hexagonal grids as a new grid structure for DOE design and fabrication. In this study, we demonstrate wave propagation simulation using an efficient hexagonal coordinate system and compare simulation accuracy with the standard Cartesian sampling scheme. Additionally, we have implemented algorithms for the inverse DOE design. The resulting hexagonal DOEs, encoded with wavefront information for holograms, are fabricated and experimentally compared to their Cartesian counterparts. Our findings indicate that employing hexagonal grids enhances holographic imaging quality. The exploration of new grid structures holds significant potential for advancing optical technology across various domains, including imaging, microscopy, photography, lighting, and virtual reality.

Abstract:Color virtual image display based on light-guided hologram is presented. It includes in-out coupling transmission volume hologram elements recorded on a single transparent planar waveguide. In the paper; the approach to overcome different diffraction for RGB (the primary colors) and achieve an optimal field of view (FOV) is given. The intensity uniformity of different waves and angles is taken into consideration, and therefore image quality is comparatively maintained over the screen. The simulation results reveal that a horizontal FOV of 15.95 degrees and a vertical FOV of 12 degrees can be achieved. There will be a tilt view angle 10.27 degrees, but it's acceptable in practical application.

Abstract:The combination of holographic gratings with freeform surface technology has led to a significant breakthrough in terms of the performance of imaging spectrometers. In this paper, a general direct design method that is capable of designing imaging spectrometers that include holographic gratings based on a complex-shaped surface substrate and their corresponding recording systems is proposed. The most important feature of this method is that the recording and imaging systems are designed within one optical system model, thus allowing for an optimal balance to be achieved between the aberration correction capability and the manufacturability of the holographic grating. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, three imaging spectrometers were designed that used holographic gratings manufactured by a recording system without auxiliary mirrors, a system with a spherical auxiliary mirror, and a system with a freeform auxiliary mirror. Ultimately, these three systems all achieved diffraction-limited imaging quality with minimal distortion.

It is shown that the HMO can be applied to study the purely geometrical optics problems concerning with focusing, defocusing, propagation etc. by employing the geometrical parameters such as curvature and the physical quantities determined by the geometrical properties such as f, meanwhile the geodesic equation is demonstrated to perform as the eikonal equation to study the orbital information of light.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers and glasses can have significant shape change determined by their director patterns. Cones deformed from circular director patterns have non-trivial Gaussian curvature localised at tips, curved interfaces, and intersections of interfaces. We employ a generalised metric compatibility condition to characterize two families of interfaces between circular director patterns -- hyperbolic and elliptical interfaces, and find that the deformed interfaces are geometrically compatible. We focus on hyperbolic interfaces to design complex topographies and non-isometric origami, including n-fold intersections, symmetric and irregular tilings. The large design space of three-fold and four-fold tiling is utilized to quantitatively inverse design an array of pixels to display target images. Taken together, our findings provide comprehensive design principles for the design of actuators, displays, and soft robotics in liquid crystal elastomers and glasses.

Abstract:3D anisotropic structures within polarization holographic optical elements are characterized using dielectric tensor tomography. Periodic rotations of anisotropic molecular orientations and the principal refractive index distributions of the polarization volume gratings are directly visualized, enabling the examination of the homogeneity of grating patterns under diverse manufacturing conditions. The ability to unveil the spatial distribution of refractive index (RI) within volumetric holographic optical elements (HOEs) is critical for quantitating their diffractive behaviors. Angle‐resolved far‐field measurements of diffractive intensity have been prevalent toward this end. However, this century‐old approach is unable to directly visualize the spatial distribution of RI at mesoscopic scale. More significantly, visualization of molecular orientation within photoaddressable polymers (PAPs), which serve as standard recording media for polarization HOEs (pHOEs), remains uncharted territory. The recent advent of dielectric tensor tomography (DTT) has paved the way for full characterization of 3D anisotropic dielectric tensors, encompassing principal RIs and their optic axes. This study embarks on direct visualization of the 3D spatial distribution of anisotropic molecular orientations within holographically recorded PAPs. Illuminating these PAPs with polarized light at varying angles, the diffracted vector fields essential for reconstructing the dielectric tensor tomogram are captured. After diagonalizing the dielectric tensors, periodic rotations of the anisotropic molecule orientations can be visualized in the PAPs, which have never been achieved so far. The homogeneity of grating patterns produced under diverse manufacturing conditions is also examined and juxtaposed.

Abstract:Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) provide a compact and energy‐efficient solution to project arbitrary grayscale images onto a distant screen. Unfortunately, they invariably suffer from the zero order spot, which is caused mainly by undiffracted light that travels along the optical axis of an illuminating laser beam. To produce projected images without the bright spot, one can either shift the intended projection off‐axis or block the zero order. However, images projected by these methods are occluded by the dark fringes of the diffraction pattern (“shadowing” effect) or increase the complexity of the optical setup. Here, a new type of DOE is introduced with blazed facets to shift the laser power into the off‐axis direction. By adding blazed facets onto each phase element of a computer‐generated hologram, far‐field projections that are free of both the zero order spot and shadowing effects are produced while maintaining a diffraction efficiency as high as 86%. The blazed facets are fabricated by 3D direct laser writing, which enables continuous phase modulation within a single pixel. This concept of sub‐pixel level modification of diffractive optical elements can be extended to other applications requiring precise wavefront shaping or detection, such as 3D displays, mixed‐reality technology, and optical analog computing.

Abstract:We propose an efficient algorithm using layered holographic stereogram for three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated holograms. The hologram is spatially partitioned into multiple holographic elements (hogels) to provide the occlusion effect and motion parallax by use of multiple viewpoint rendering. Each hogel is calculated with inverse Fresnel diffraction by slicing the viewing frustum according to the depth image. The sliced layers can provide accurate depth cues for reconstruction since the geometric information of the 3D scene is faithfully matched. The algorithm is compatible with computer graphics rendering techniques and robust for holograms with different parameters. When the hogel size equals 1 mm, the signal-to-noise ratio of the diffraction calculation is above 39 dB with a propagation distance longer than 10 mm. Numerical simulations and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3D images with reduced computational load. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Theoretical modelling has been used to calculate the holographic recording beam angles required in air (at any recording wavelength) to produce a Volume Holographic Optical Element (VHOE) for any defined input and output beam angles. The approach is used to facilitate the design and fabrication of diffractive coupling elements through a holographic process that avoids the use of coupling prisms during recording and will help in the design of recording arrangements that better suit the mass production of low-cost elements, especially those designed for non-normal incidence. In this study, the recording angles needed for a range of recording wavelengths were explored for VHOE couplers designed for input angles (in air) ranging from 0° to −55°. Then, in order to validate the model, holographic recording in Bayfol HX 200 photopolymer at 532 nm was used to fabricate photopolymer VHOE couplers for 633 nm light (−45° input angle in air). Bragg curves obtained experimentally for different probe wavelengths (403 nm, 532 nm and 633 nm) confirm the recording of the desired grating structures to a precision of ±1°, and coupling is demonstrated at 633 nm with a diffraction efficiency of up to 72%. Furthermore, the model is used to identify the origins of some weaker spurious gratings observed alongside the expected ones.

Abstract:Versatile optical devices are designed from anisotropic and gradient materials based on transformation optics, which are usually hard to realize. Here, by utilizing conformal equivalence, we demonstrate that a flat gradient index optical thin-film waveguide is equivalent to a curved homogenous optical thin-film waveguide for light rays. Such a relationship provides us an alternative method to design optical devices with either an inhomogeneous medium or equivalently curved surfaces made from only a homogeneous material, leading to applications on on-chip optical devices. Moreover, we provide a prototype of the curved optical thin-film waveguide without rotational symmetry, which can serve as a concave lens. Our work gives a conformal landscape of a two-dimensional gradient refractive-index profile from the geometric optics perspective.

Abstract:The Hopf fibration has inspired any number of geometric structures in physical systems, in particular in chiral liquid crystalline materials. Because the Hopf fibration lives on the three sphere, $\mathbb{S}^3$, some method of projection or distortion must be employed to realize textures in flat space. Here, we explore the geodesic-preserving gnomonic projection of the Hopf fibration, and show that this could be the basis for a new liquid crystalline texture with only splay and twist. We outline the structure and show that it is defined by the tangent vectors along the straight line rulings on a series of hyperboloids. The phase is defined by a lack of bend deformations in the texture, and is reminiscent of the splay-bend and twist-bend nematic phases. We show that domains of this phase may be stabilized through anchoring and saddle-splay.

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials have attracted considerable interest in the research community for their peculiar ability to enhance control of electromagnetic waves' propagation. Although conformal transformation optics provides a unique platform for metamaterials design, this method has not been used for hyperbolic metamaterials yet. This comes from the lack of a well-defined mathematical structure. We extend conformal transformation optics to hyperbolic metamaterials, by applying Clifford algebra to analyze light propagation. We will show that the effective line element of a trajectory of light propagation conforms to ultrahyperbolic—not Euclidean—geometry. We also, by using conformal hyperbolic mapping, obtain all conformal spaces with Minkowski space-time. Finally, we employ this theory to study the electric-field pattern of dipoles.

Abstract:We consider curves $\gamma : [0, 1]\to\mathbb{R}^3$ endowed with an adapted orthonormal frame $r : [0, 1]\to SO(3)$. We are interested in the cases where the frame is constrained, in the sense that one of its `curvatures' (i.e., off-diagonal elements of $r'r^T$) is prescribed. One example is the Fr\'enet frame. In order to deform such constrained framed curves without spoiling the constraint, we proceed in two stages. First we deform the frame $r$ in a way that is naturally compatible with the differential constraint, by interpreting it in terms of parallel transport on the sphere. The deformation of the base curve $\gamma$ is achieved in a second step, by means of a suitable reparametrization of the frame. We illustrate this deformation procedure by providing some applications.
