Abstract:Many optical systems used in the infrared spectrum have, so far, adopted binary optical elements (BOE) to achieve a better performance. Especially, in the middle and long infrared spectrum, binary optical elements are commonly used. Thus, limited by the manufacture technology, the applications of binary optics in the visible spectrum are rare. This tentative research aims at finding the practicability of applying BOEs in the visible spectrum We attempted to replace the reference lens group in the interferometer with a harmonic diffractive/refractive hybrid lens group, expecting that the wave aberration be well-corrected. In this paper, the main procedure of designing a hybrid optical system is introduced with an example of "F2" lens group. After the analysis on the interference pattern and wave front, the comparison between the tested result and theoretical result can be made. It demonstrates that the hybrid optical system is capable of being applied in the visible spectrum. The analysis also discloses that raising the diffractive efficiency is the next step for us to take.
Microoptic Element for Optical Disk Memory Read-Write Heads

Abstract:Based on the theory of computer generated hologram and fabrication of binary optical element, a new micro-optic element for optical disk memory read-write heads is proposed. This element is small in size (5mm in diameter, 1mm in thickness), light in weight (<0.03g), and high in diffraction efficiency (36.64%). It is with three optical functions required for an optical head, splitting beam, producing the focusing error signal and the tracking error signal. When this micro-optic element is used to replace four conventional optical elements (a diffraction grating, a beam splitter prism, a collimating lens and a cylindrical lens) of common optical head, a sophisticated optical head can be produced.

Abstract:A holographic element for the common CD pick-up to play DVD is designed in this paper. The focus of holographic element is the same as that of the objective lens of CD player. The holographic element is fixed before the objective lens. The focus of DVD player with this holographic element is 8.5 mm, the number aperture is 0.75, and the focusing beam spot is 0.5 um. DVD player with the holographic element is characteristic of compensating the main optical error met in the common CD player well. ?2005 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Abstract:A color transparent screen was designed in this paper, a planar glass was used as a waveguide structure and the lens array holographic optical element (HOE) was used as a display unit. The lens array HOE was exposed by two coherent beams. One was the reference wave which directly illuminated on the holographic material and the other was modulated by the micro lens array. The lens array HOE can display the images with see-through abilities. Unlike the conventional lens array HOE, a planar glass was adopted as the waveguide in the experiment. The projecting light was totally internal-reflected in the planar glass to eliminate the undesired zero-order diffracted light. By using waveguide, it also brings advantage of compact structure. Colorful display can be realized in our system as the holographic materials were capable for multi-wavelength display. In this paper, a color transparent screen utilizing the lens array HOE and waveguide were designed. Experiment results showed a circular display area on the transparent screen. The diameter of the area is 20 mm and it achieved the pixel resolution of 100μm. This simple and effective method could be an alternative in the augment reality (AR) applications, such as transparent phone and television.

Abstract:A color transparent screen was designed in this paper, utilizing a planar glass combined with lens array holographic optical elements (HOEs). Abstract:Freeform holographic optical elements (HOEs), due to the high degrees of design freedom, can be used to enhance performance of display systems. In this Letter, we propose a method for designing and fabricating freeform HOEs on curved optical surfaces that can be utilized to implement curved augmented reality (AR) displays. In our method, the phase profile of the freeform HOE laminated on a curved surface is first optimized to achieve a good image performance. Then, two recording wavefronts are optimized to produce the phase profile of the freeform HOE on the curved surface with a high uniformity of diffraction efficiency. The two recording wavefronts used for a curved substrate are converted into two wavefronts for a planar substrate based on a conversion relationship between the curved HOE and the planar HOE. A home-built holographic printer is used to fabricate freeform HOEs on a flat substrate, and then the freeform HOEs are laminated onto a curved optical surface. Two interesting AR display systems are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design and fabrication method.

Abstract:Holographic optical element(HOE) lens is an imaging element fabricated through recording wavefront by interference. Because of its advantages of small form factor and wavelength, angle selectivity and arbitrary wavefront formation, it has a good application prospect in augmented reality display. To make the system more compact, the HOE is set as an off-axis optical element. At the same time, due to its diffraction principle, its wavelength response is more sensitive than traditional refractive and reflective optical elements. Thus the fabrication and design of a full-color HOE lens is a challenge to optimize the free-space head-up displays system. To systematically analyze the HOE imaging system, the conjugate relation between the object and image is derived by scalar diffraction theory. Then the Gaussian conjugate imaging equation is obtained and the off-axis aberration of distortion and astigmatism in the HOE imaging systems are analyzed. In addition, A head-up display with FOV of 18°and eyebox of 10mm is simulated and its imaging process is visualized through the geometric optics method of k-vector diagram and ray-tracing. A full-color HOE lens with high diffraction efficiency was fabricated by interference. Its average peak diffraction efficiency is 56%, reaching the highest level in the world. A prototype of augmented reality system is established by combining laser pico-projectior with HOE lens. The experimental results of distortion and astigmatism effects of the system are obtained, which are consistent with the simulation results. The MTF parameters of the system are measured, and its definition basically meets the resolution requirements of the human eye. The aberration of the system is analyzed and the optimization method is proposed. To optimize the monochromatic image quality, an extra cylindrical lens is added to ensure the same optical power of meridian and sagittal plane to eliminate astigmatism. Besides, a freeform wavefront is designed by geometric construction method and form a freeform HOE to deal with the distortion problem. The local recording freeform wavefront can be calculated by the imaging equation. When full-color HOE is applied in the display system, the images of three channels may separate in the space because of their different reconstruction wavelengths and angles. We propose a pre-compensation method of in the recording process to solve this problem. If these above problems can be solved, due to its good image uniformity, sufficient field angle and eyebox area, the head-up display based on HOE lens with extra optical power will have a better application in augmented reality technology.

Abstract:Objective: The aberrations of a conventional lens holographic optical element (HOE) are consid-erable because of the off-axis recording and diffraction nature. A freeform HOE was introduced to alleviate these aberrations. To design and optimize the recording wavefront of a freeform HOE, it is important to figure out the imaging properties of an HOE.Methods: We systematically derived a general characterization of the conjugate imaging equation of an elementary HOE recorded by two spherical wavefronts using the scalar diffraction theory. In our design, each patch of a freeform HOE is considered as an elementary HOE. The recording wavefronts of a freeform HOE is designed by determining each elementary HOE through the conjugate imaging equation.Results: The image position predicted by the imaging equation is consistent with that of the finite ray-tracing method. The error when the imaging equation is applied to off-axis object points and different reconstruction wavelengths is eliminated effectively through coordinate transformation. Furthermore, based on this equation, a freeform HOE with 3 x 3 tiling elementary HOEs is designed to eliminate distortion and astigmatism of the HOE imaging system. A holographic printer to fabricate this freeform HOE is recommended.

Abstract:Compared with other kinds of diffractive optical elements (DOEs), the harmonic diffractive optical element (HDOE) is analyzed, and some important results including its dispersion are deduced and presented in this paper. Its inherent advantages and characteristics are analyzed and concluded, and then several applications including imaging in the wide wavelength band, multicolor optical Fourier transform system, and multicolor scanning system are suggested The harmonic diffractive optical elements or systems have small volume and strong potentials in the applications of achromatic multi-wavelength multi-order diffraction, so it is promised that HDOE will be useful in the field of integrated photo-electronics.

Abstract:Volume holographic digital data storage has many performance characteristics including large storage capacity and high transfer rate. But there are some problems in the commercial applications for holographic digital disc of volume holographic digital data storage. A single beam setup is introduced in this article for holographic digital disc. In this new system, the reference beam and the information beam are coaxially arranged to perform reading and writing. This new single beam setup can reduce the complexity, the demand for mechanical precision, the size and cost of the conventional holographic digital storage setup using dual beams. And it is also compatible with the conventional optical disk technologies.

Abstract:Collinear Holography was proposed by OPTWARE Corporation, in which the information and reference beams were aligned co-axially and modulated by the same SLM. With this unique configuration the optical pickup can be designed as small as the DVD ′ s, and can be placed on one side of the recording disc. A 2-dimensional digital page data format was used and the shift-multiplexing method was employed to increased recording density of HVD. As the servo technology is being introduced to control the objective lens to be maintained precisely to the disc in the recording and the reconstructing process, a vibration isolator is no longer necessary. In HVD, the pre-formatted meta-data reflective layer was used for the focus/tracking servo and reading address information, and the dichroic mirror layer was used for detecting holographic recording information without interfering with the preformatted information.Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the holographic material is very effective to increased recording density of the system. HVD will be compatible with existing disc storage systems, like CD and DVD, and enable us to expand its applications into other optical information storage systems.

Abstract:The primary technical challenge for optical backplanes involve the alignment and optical isolation of multiple data channels. Since most backplanes require data transfer rates greater than a single optical channel can cost-effectively provide, multiple data channels is the common solution for higher aggregate transfer rates. Established optical alignment and isolation techniques include spatial separation of optical channels, use of lensing elements to focus specific transmitter outputs to specific receiver areas, use of differing wavelengths for adjacent channels with appropriate frequency filtering on receivers, and the use of '' light guide tubes '' for each channel. This presentation will examine another promising option, the use of '' matched '' Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) to provide both cross channel optical isolation and to significantly relax traditional optical alignment requirements. Matched HOEs can both induce upon a transmitted optical stream, and then filter upon a received optical stream, a number of distinguishing characteristics such as wavelength, polarization, phase, and amplitude. Thus the use of a unique '' matched HOE '' pair with each transmitter-receiver pair of multiple optical data channels can provide an efficient mechanism to isolate individual data streams even when they may be physically coincident, such as in a length of fibre optic or when multiple free space data transmitters illuminate several channel's receiver elements. Thus, the alignment issue is relaxed from the usual constraint of attempting to physically separate channels to one where, as long as the receiver is within the optical cone of it's matched transmitting element, cross channel interference can be effectively eliminated.

Abstract:The research of holographic optical elements (HOE) was carried out very intensively in the 1980s and 1990s. They provided great advantages in high-efficiency natural light, while at the same time providing effective sun protection and did not disturb the free view from the windows. The light-directing qualities of these devices made it possible to concentrate direct and scattered solar energy on photovoltaic batteries and solar collectors for hot water supply and solar heating. However, in recent years, research in this area has become less and less frequent without any explanation. The analysis of the research carried out in the framework of one of the latest projects carried out on behalf of the European Commission under the program “Energy, Environment, and Sustainable Development” (EU Contract Number: ENK6-CT‐2000–00327) with the participation of nine research organizations, higher schools, and universities is presented. The role of each of the participants in this interdisciplinary project was to attract experienced researchers in various fields of science and use their knowledge to obtain an objective result.

Abstract:Collinear holography has been good candidate for a volumetric recording technology of holographic data storage system (HDSS), because of there are not only large storage capacities, high transfer rates, but also the unique configuration, in which the information and reference beams are modulated co-axially by the same spatial light modulator, as a new read/write method for HDSS are very promising. The optical pickup can be designed as small as DVDs, and can be placed on one side of the recording media (disc). In the disc structure, the preformatted reflective layer is used for the focus/tracking servo and reading address information, and a dichroic mirror layer is used for detecting holographic recording information without interfering with the preformatted information. A 2-dimensional digital page data format is used and the shift-multiplexing method is employed to increase recording density. As servo technologies are being introduced to control the objective lens to be maintained precisely to the disc in the recording and reconstructing process, a vibration isolator is no longer necessary. In this paper, we introduced the principle of the collinear holography and its media structure of disc. Some results of experimental and theoretical studies suggest that it is a very effective method. We also discussed some methods to increase the recording density and data transfer rates of collinear holography using phase modulated page data format.

Abstract:We propose a methodfor designing and fabricating freeform HOEs on curved optical substrates that can be utilized to implement curved augmented reality (AR) displays. Compared with conventional HOEs, freeform HOEs can enhance image performance and enlarge degrees of freedom in design. In our method, the phase profiles of the freeform HOE on the curved surface are first optimized to achieve good image performance. Then, recording wavefronts are optimized to improve uniformity of diffraction efficiency and converted into wavefronts for a planar substrate. The conversion relationship between curved HOEs and planar HOEs is analyzed. A holographic printer has been developed for fabricating freeform HOEs on a flat substrate temporarily, which are then pasted onto the curved substrate. A simple application case of curved freeform HOE is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
