Abstract:In the Twin Towers of Hanoi version of the well known Towers of Hanoi Problem there are two coupled sets of pegs. In each move, one chooses a pair of pegs in one of the sets and performs the only possible legal transfer of a disk between the chosen pegs (the smallest disk from one of the pegs is moved to the other peg), but also, simultaneously, between the corresponding pair of pegs in the coupled set (thus the same sequence of moves is always used in both sets). We provide upper and lower bounds on the length of the optimal solutions to problems of the following type. Given an initial and a final position of N disks in each of the coupled sets, what is the smallest number of moves needed to simultaneously obtain the final position from the initial one in each set? Our analysis is based on the use of a group, called Hanoi Towers group, of rooted ternary tree automorphisms, which models the original problem in such a way that the configurations on N disks are the vertices at level N of the tree and the action of the generators of the group represents the three possible moves between the three pegs. The twin version of the problem is analyzed by considering the action of Hanoi Towers group on pairs of vertices.

Abstract:Consider the restricted Hanoi graphs which correspond to the variants of the famous Tower of Hanoi problem with multiple pegs where moves of the discs are restricted throughout the arcs of a movement digraph whose vertices represent the pegs of the puzzle and an arc from vertex $p$ to vertex $q$ exists if and only if moves from peg $p$ to peg $q$ are allowed. In this paper, we gave some notes on how to construct the restricted Hanoi graphs as well as some combinatorial results on the number of arcs in these graphs.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:The Tower of Hanoi game is a classical puzzle in recreational mathematics (Lucas 1883) which also has a strong record in pure mathematics. In a borderland between these two areas we find the characterization of the minimal number of moves, which is $2^n-1$, to transfer a tower of $n$ disks. But there are also other variations to the game, involving for example real number weights on the moves of the disks. This gives rise to a similar type of problem, but where the final score seeks to be optimized. We study extensions of the one-player setting to two players, invoking classical winning conditions in combinatorial game theory such as the player who moves last wins, or the highest score wins. Here we solve both these winning conditions on three heaps.

Abstract:A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for every vertex $v$ of $T$, there is a monochromatic path from $X$ to $v$. We give a short proof of this statement. We moreover show that the general Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture (which as a special case implies the stable marriage theorem) is valid for directed graphs with bounded stability number. This conjecture remains however open.

Abstract:In this paper, we disprove a conjecture recently proposed in [L. Almodovar et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2108.00035" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.00035">arXiv:2108.00035</a>] on the non-existence of biminimal pots realizing the cube, namely pots with the minimum number of tiles and the minimum number of bond-edge types. In particular, we present two biminimal pots realizing the cube and show that these two pots are unique up to isomorphisms.

Abstract:We study the combinatorial and rigidity properties of disk packings with generic radii. We show that a packing of $n$ disks in the plane with generic radii cannot have more than $2n-3$ pairs of disks in contact. The allowed motions of a packing preserve the disjointness of the disk interiors and tangency between pairs already in contact (modeling a collection of sticky disks). We show that if a packing has generic radii, then the allowed motions are all rigid body motions if and only if the packing has exactly $2n-3$ contacts. Our approach is to study the space of packings with a fixed contact graph. The main technical step is to show that this space is a smooth manifold, which is done via a connection to the Cauchy-Alexandrov stress lemma. Our methods also apply to jamming problems, in which contacts are allowed to break during a motion. We give a simple proof of a finite variant of a recent result of Connelly, et al. on the number of contacts in a jammed packing of disks with generic radii.

Abstract:The authors investigate the Hanoi Tower problem with multi-pegs more than three. Based on the idea of dynamic programming, the recursion formula of the least number of movements necessary for this problem is presented. The direct formula of the least number of movements necessary for this problem is given and proved by triple mathematical induction and pure combinatorics.

Abstract:In 1969, Erdős and Sós initiated the study of the Ramsey-Turán type problems: Determine the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex $K_{p+1}$-free graph without large independent set. Given integers $p, q\ge2$, we say that a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. Fix a function $f( n )$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,f( n ))} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $f( n )$. For any $\delta>0$, let $\rho (p, q,\delta ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,\delta n)}{n^2}$. Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) determined the value of $\rho(3,p,\delta)$ for $p=3,4,5$ and sufficiently small $\delta>0$. Moreover, they showed $\rho(3,6,\delta)\ge \frac{5}{12}+\frac{\delta}{2}+2\delta^2$ from a skilful construction and conjectured the equality holds for sufficiently small $\delta>0$. In this paper, we obtain $\rho(3,6,\delta)\le\frac{5}{12} + \frac{\delta }{2}+ 2.1025\delta ^2$ for sufficiently small $\delta>0$, which is pretty close to solving the conjecture. The key step of the proof is to establish a stability lemma of the $n$-vertex graph that is $(K_3,K_6)$-free with independence number $\delta n$.

Abstract:A graph G is 3-domination-critical if its domination number γ is 3 and the addition of any edge decreases γ by 1. Wojcicka conjectured that every 3-domination-critical graph with δ⩾2 has a hamiltonian cycle (J. Graph Theory 14 (1990) 205–215). The conjecture had been proved and its proof consists of two parts: the case α⩽δ+1 (J. Graph Theory 25 (1997) 173–184) and the case α=δ+2 (Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 57–70). In this paper, we give a new and simple proof of the conjecture by using Hanson's (J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 13 (1993) 121–128) and Bondy-Chvátal's (Discrete Math. 15(1976) 111–135) closure operations.

Abstract:For graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $r(G,H)$ is the smallest positive integer $N$ such that any red/blue edge coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ contains either a red $G$ or a blue $H$. A book $B_n$ is a graph consisting of $n$ triangles all sharing a common edge. Recently, Conlon, Fox and Wigderson conjectured that for any $0<\alpha<1$, the random lower bound $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)\ge (\sqrt{\alpha}+1)^2n+o(n)$ is not tight. In other words, there exists some constant $\beta>(\sqrt{\alpha}+1)^2$ such that $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)\ge \beta n$ for all sufficiently large $n$. This conjecture holds for every $\alpha< 1/6$ by a result of Nikiforov and Rousseau from 2005, which says that in this range $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil},B_n)=2n+3$ for all sufficiently large $n$. We disprove the conjecture of Conlon, Fox and Wigderson. Indeed, we show that the random lower bound is asymptotically tight for every $1/4\leq \alpha\leq 1$. Moreover, we show that for any $1/6\leq \alpha\le 1/4$ and large $n$, $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil}, B_n)\le\left(\frac 32+3\alpha\right) n+o(n)$, where the inequality is asymptotically tight when $\alpha=1/6$ or $1/4$. We also give a lower bound of $r(B_{\lceil\alpha n\rceil}, B_n)$ for $1/6\le\alpha< \frac{52-16\sqrt{3}}{121}\approx0.2007$, showing that the random lower bound is not tight, i.e., the conjecture of Conlon, Fox and Wigderson holds in this interval.

Abstract:As we all know, Hanoi Problem is a classical case of recursive algorithm in programming. In this paper, we study the problem in another way by numbering the peg from bottom to top with integer. Considering the relationship between disks and pegs, we design a new non-recursive solution to determine which disk is moved and which peg will be move to in each step. The algorithm is relatively simple and efficientive. We also discuss the optimization which is with scalability under certain conditions.

Abstract:Inversive distance circle packing on surfaces was introduced by Bowers-Stephenson as a generalization of Thurston's circle packing and conjectured to be rigid. The infinitesimal and global rigidity of circle packing with nonnegative inversive distance were proved by Guo and Luo respectively. The author proved the global rigidity of circle packing with inversive distance in $(-1,+\infty)$. In this paper, we give a new variational proof of the Bowers-Stephenson conjecture for inversive distance in $(-1,+\infty)$, which simplifies the existing proofs and could be generalized to three dimensional case.

Disc stackings and their Morse index

Abstract:We construct free boundary minimal disc stackings, with any number of strata, in the three-dimensional Euclidean unit ball, and prove uniform, linear lower and upper bounds on the Morse index of all such surfaces. Among other things, our work implies for any positive integer $k$ the existence of $k$-tuples of distinct, pairwise non-congruent, embedded free boundary minimal surfaces all having the same topological type. In addition, since we prove that the equivariant Morse index of any such free boundary minimal stacking, with respect to its maximal symmetry group, is bounded from below by (the integer part of) half the number of layers and from above strictly by twice the same number, it follows that any possible realization of such surfaces via an equivariant min-max method would need to employ sweepouts with an arbitrarily large number of parameters. This also shows that it is only for $N=2$ and $N=3$ layers that free boundary minimal disc stackings are achievable by means of one-dimensional mountain pass schemes.

Minimizing the stabbing number of matchings, trees, and triangulations

Abstract:The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.

Abstract:Here we introduce a new game on graphs, called cup stacking, following a line of what can be considered as 0-, 1-, or 2-person games such as chip firing, percolation, graph burning, zero forcing, cops and robbers, graph pebbling, and graph pegging, among others. It can be more general, but the most basic scenario begins with a single cup on each vertex of a graph. (This simplification coincides with an earlier game devised by Gordon Hamilton.) For a vertex with k cups on it we can move all its cups to a vertex at distance k from it, provided the second vertex already has at least one cup on it. The object is to stack all cups onto some pre-described target vertex. We say that a graph is stackable if this can be accomplished for all possible target vertices. In this paper we study cup stacking on many families of graphs, developing a characterization of stackability in graphs and using it to prove the stackability of complete graphs, paths, cycles, grids, the Petersen graph, many Kneser graphs, some trees, cubes of dimension up to 20, "somewhat balanced" complete t -partite graphs, and Hamiltonian diameter two graphs. Additionally we use the Gallai-Edmonds Structure Theorem, the Edmonds Blossom Algorithm, and the Hungarian algorithm to devise a polynomial algorithm to decide if a diameter two graph is stackable. Our proof that cubes up to dimension 20 are stackable uses Kleitman's Symmetric Chain Decomposition and the new result of Merino, Mütze, and Namrata that all generalized Johnson graphs (excluding the Petersen graph) are Hamiltonian. We conjecture that all cubes and higher-dimensional grids are stackable, and leave the reader with several open problems, questions, and generalizations.
