Abstract:We review some "proofs without words" for the formula for geometric series and find a common theme lurking behind them. We also answer negatively the question raised by Edgar on the existence of other proofs similar to Mabry's and his.

Abstract:Let $n$ be an integer and $W_n$ be the Lambert $W$ function. Let $\log$ denote the natural logarithm so that $\delta=-W_n(-\log2)/\log2$. Given that $a$ and $r$ are respectively the first term and the constant ratio of an infinite geometric series, it is proved that the limit of convergence of the geometric series is $\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\pm\infty}{a\big[r^\delta-1\big]\big[r-1\big]^{-1}}$ where $r\neq1$. By applying the geometric series formula above, it is further proved that the harmonic series $\zeta(1)$ is given by $\zeta(1)=-2\big[\log2+W_n(-\log2)\big]$ and as $n\rightarrow\pm\infty$, the value of $\zeta(1)$ grows very slowly toward $\tilde\infty$, confirming the divergence of the harmonic series.

The proof is novel in using the idea of colorings applied to regular polygons to establish a number-theo retic result. Abstract:We prove a recent conjecture, due to Vigren and Dieckmann, about an explicit triple sum formula for a series from Ramanujan's Notebooks. We shall give two proofs: the first one is by evaluation and based on the identity \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{(x+k)^{m+k}}{k!}e^{-u(x+k)} u^k = \sum_{j=0}^\infty \sum_{i=0}^{m}\binom{m+j}{i} \stirl{m+j-i}{j}x^iu^j, \end{equation*} where $\genfrac\{\}{0pt}{}{n}{k}$ is a Stirling number of the second kind, and the second one is combinatorial in nature and by induction.

Abstract:A theorem which is named after the American Mathematician Moris Marden states a very surprising and interesting fact concerning the relationship between the points of a triangle in the complex plane and the zeros of two complex polynomials related to this triangle: "Suppose the zeroes z1, z2, and z3 of a third-degree polynomial p(z) are non-collinear. There is a unique ellipse inscribed in the triangle with vertices z1, z2, z3 and tangent to the sides at their midpoints: the Steiner in-ellipse. The foci of that ellipse are the zeroes of the derivative p'(z)." (Wikipedia contributors, "Marden's theorem", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marden%27s_theorem). This document describes how Scilab, a popular and powerful open source alternative to MATLAB, can be used to visualize the above stated theorem for arbitrary complex numbers z1, z2, and z3 which are not collinear. It is further demonstrated how the equations of the Steiner ellipses of a triangle in the complex plane can be calculated and plotted by applying this theorem.
Ghost series and a motivated proof of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities

Abstract:We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities. Similar "motivated proofs" have been given by Andrews and Baxter for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities and by Lepowsky and Zhu for Gordon's identities. Additionally, "motivated proofs" have also been given for the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities by Kanade, Lepowsky, Russell, and Sills and for the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities by Coulson, Kanade, Lepowsky, McRae, Qi, Russell, and the third author. Our proof borrows both the use of "ghost series" from the "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud identities and uses recursions similar to those found in the "motivated proof" of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. We anticipate that this "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities will illuminate certain twisted vertex-algebraic constructions.

Abstract:In 2021, Dan Reznik made a YouTube video demonstrating that power circles of Poncelet triangles have an invariant total area. He made a simulation based on this observation and put forward a few conjectures. One of these conjectures suggests that the sum of the areas of three circles, each centered at the midpoint of a side of the Poncelet triangle and passing through the opposite vertex, remains constant. In this paper, we provide a proof of Reznik's conjecture and present a formula for calculating the total sum. Additionally, we demonstrate the algebraic structures formed by various sets of products and the geometric properties of polygons and ellipses created by these products.

Abstract:So far, the most magnificent breakthrough in mathematics in the 21st century is the Geometrization Theorem, a bold conjecture by William Thurston (generalizing Poincaré's Conjecture) and proved by Grigory Perelman, based on the program suggested by Richard Hamilton. In this survey article, we will explain the statement of this result, also presenting some examples of how it can be used to obtain interesting results in differential geometry.

Abstract:We first present the corrected expression for a certain widely-recorded generalized Goldbach-Euler series. The corrected forms are then shown to be connected with the problem of closed-form evaluation of series involving the Zeta functions, which happens to be an extensively-investigated subject since the time of Euler as (for example) in the classical three-century old-Goldbach theorem.

Abstract:We deduce a family of six new series for 1/pi; for example, [GRAPHICS] where W-n(x) = Sigma(n)(k=0) ((n)(k))((n+k)(k))((2k)(k))((2(n-k))(n-k))x(k). To do so, we manage to transform our series to series of the type [GRAPHICS] studied by Shaun Cooper in 2012. In addition, we pose 17 new series for 1/pi motivated by congruences; for example, we conjecture that [GRAPHICS] where T-k(b, c) is the coefficient of x(k) in the expansion of (x(2) + bx + c)(k).

In this paper we obtain the following identity: [Formula: see text] We explain how we found the series and develop related congruences involving Bernoulli or Euler numbers; for example, it is shown that [Formula: see text] for any prime p > 3, where E0, E1, E2, … are Euler numbers. Motivated by the Amdeberhan–Zeilberger identity [Formula: see text], we also establish the congruence [Formula: see text] for each prime p > 3.

Abstract:How to automatically generate short and easy-to-understand proofs for geometric theorems has long been an issue of concern in mathematics education. A novel automated geometric theorem proving method based on complex number identities is proposed in this paper, which acts as a bridge between geometry and algebra. According to the proposed method, the geometric relations in the given proposition are first transformed into a complex number expression, then the complex number identity is generated by the elimination method; finally, the closure property under all four operations of real numbers is employed to prove the proposition. A test on more than 300 geometric problems shows that the proposed method is highly effective, and the corresponding proofs are short, with obvious geometric meaning.
