Abstract:We make a case for the unique relevance of Cartan geometry for gauge theories of gravity and supergravity. We introduce our discussion by recapitulating historical threads, providing motivations. In a first part we review the geometry of classical gauge theory, as a background for understanding gauge theories of gravity in terms of Cartan geometry. The second part introduces the basics of the group manifold approach to supergravity, hinting at the deep rooted connections to Cartan supergeometry. The contribution is intended, not as an extensive review, but as a conceptual overview, and hopefully a bridge between communities in physics and mathematics.

Supergravity in the Geometric Approach and its Hidden Graded Lie Algebra

Abstract:In this contribution, we present the geometric approach to supergravity. In the first part, we discuss in some detail the peculiarities of the approach and apply the formalism to the case of pure supergravity in four space-time dimensions. In the second part, we extend the discussion to theories in higher dimensions, which include antisymmetric tensors of degree higher than one, focussing on the case of eleven dimensional space-time. Here, we report the formulation first introduced in 1981 by R. D'Auria and P. Frè, corresponding to a generalization of a Chevalley-Eilenberg Lie algebra, together with some more recent results, pointing out the relation of the formalism with the mathematical framework of $L_\infty$ algebras.

Abstract:In this note, I review a recent approach to quantum gravity that "gravitizes" quantum mechanics by emerging geometry and gravity from complex quantum states. Drawing further insights from tensor network toy models in AdS/CFT, I propose that approximate quantum error correction codes, when re-adapted into the aforementioned framework, also has promise in emerging gravity in near-flat geometries.

Abstract:<p>Inspired by superstring field theory, we study differential, integral, and inverse forms and their mutual relations on a supermanifold from a sheaf-theoretical point of view. In particular, the formal distributional properties of integral forms are recovered in this scenario in a geometrical way. Further, we show how inverse forms virgolette extend" the ordinary de Rham complex on a supermanifold, thus providing a mathematical foundation of the Large Hilbert Space used in superstrings. Last, we briefly discuss how the Hodge diamond of a supermanifold looks like, and we explicitly compute it for super Riemann surfaces.</p>

Poincaré Duality for Supermanifolds, Higher Cartan Structures and Geometric Supergravity

Abstract:We study relative differential and integral forms and their cohomology on families of supermanifolds and prove a relative version of Poincaré duality relating the cohomology of differential and integral forms in different geometric categories. In the smooth category, we complement Poincaré duality by proving the compactly supported Poincaré lemmas for both differential and integral forms, filling a gap in the literature. We then use our results to study supergravity. In particular, we describe supergravity in dimension three via higher Cartan structures, which can be regarded as certain classes of connections taking values in $L_\infty$-superalgebras. We then use relative Poincaré duality to state a general form of the action principle in a mathematically rigorous manner. This interpolates in a unified fashion between two equivalent formulations of supergravity, one based on the superspace approach and the other on the group manifold approach in the physics literature.

Abstract:The underlying even manifold of a super Riemann surface is a Riemann surface with a spinor valued differential form called gravitino. Consequently infinitesimal deformations of super Riemann surfaces are certain infinitesimal deformations of the Riemann surface and the gravitino. Furthermore the action functional of non-linear super symmetric sigma models, the action functional underlying string theory, can be obtained from a geometric action functional on super Riemann surfaces. All invariances of the super symmetric action functional are explained in super geometric terms and the action functional is a functional on the moduli space of super Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:In this series of lectures I present a review of the geometric structures of supergravity in diverse dimensions mostly relevant to p-brane physics and to pinpoint the correspondence between the macroscopic and microscopic description of branes. In particular I review duality transformations, coset manifold structures and the general steps involved by the process of gauging supergravity lagrangians both with respect to compact, non compact and non semisimple groups. I focus specifically on the issue of the Domain Wall field theory correspondence and its relation with the gaugings of supergravity in p+2 dimensions. A complete review of the geometries involved by D=5, N=2 supergravity and of its most general form is given with emphasis on the problem of finding smooth supersymmetric realizations of the Randall Sundrum scenarios. I also give a general review of the algebraic machinery involved by the Solvable Lie algebra description of the scalar manifolds of supergravity and I emphasize its distinguished role in pinpointing the superstring interpretation of supergravity p brane solutions and the macroscopic/microscopic correspondence.

Abstract:We give a very concise review of the group field theory formalism for non-perturbative quantum gravity, a higher dimensional generalisation of matrix models. We motivate it as a simplicial and local realisation of the idea of 3rd quantization of the gravitational field, equivalently of a quantum field theory of simplicial geometry, in which also the topology of space is fully dynamical. We highlight the basic structure of the formalism, and discuss briefly various models that are being studied, some recent results and the many open issues that future research should face. Finally, we point out the connections with other approaches to quantum gravity, such as loop quantum gravity, quantum Regge calculus and dynamical triangulations, and causal sets.

Abstract:The framework of exceptional field theory is extended by introducing consistent deformations of its generalised Lie derivative. For the first time, massive type IIA supergravity is reproduced geometrically as a solution of the section constraint. This provides a unified description of all ten- and eleven-dimensional maximal supergravities. The action of the E7 deformed theory is constructed, and reduces to those of exceptional field theory and gauged maximal supergravity in respective limits. The relation of this new framework to other approaches for generating the Romans mass non-geometrically is discussed.

Abstract:A large class of supergravities in diverse dimensions are surveyed. This includes maximal supergravities, their general gaugings in the framework of embedding tensor formalism, supergravities with less than maximal supersymmetry, their matter couplings and general gaugings. The emphasis is on summarizing their most general form to date, and primarily in their component formulation. A class of exceptional field theories in an extended geometric framework are summarized briefly. For most of the supergravities surveyed, the bosonic part of the Lagrangians and supertransformations up to leading terms in fermions are given.

Abstract:We review the remarkable interplay between modular symmetries and supergravity, which has led to major advances in both physics and mathematics in recent decades. Our focus will be on four-dimensional models with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ local supersymmetry. We will look at the early articles on the topic, but also touch on recent developments. These results testify to how supergravity, when supplemented with the appropriate assumptions, can be turned into a unique window into quantum gravity.

Abstract:Geometric quantization transforms a symplectic manifold with Lie group action to a unitary representation. In this article, we extend geometric quantization to the super setting. We consider real forms of contragredient Lie supergroups with compact Cartan subgroups, and study their actions on some pseudo-Kähler supermanifolds. We construct their unitary representations in terms of sections of some line bundles. These unitary representations contain highest weight Harish-Chandra supermodules, whose occurrences depend on the image of the moment map. As a result, we construct a Gelfand model of highest weight Harish-Chandra supermodules. We also perform symplectic reduction, and show that quantization commutes with reduction.

Abstract:We review a recently proposed SuperGeometric (SG) approach to Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) that allow for scalar-fermion field transformations in a manifestly reparameterisation covariant manner. By adopting natural choices for the field-space supermetric, we show how a non-trivial field-space Riemannian curvature can be introduced in the fermionic sector, beyond the usual one that may have its origin in the scalar part of the theory. We present a minimal SG-QFT model with proper non-zero fermionic curvature both in two and four spacetime dimensions. Possible future directions in further developing SG-QFTs are discussed.

The Geometry and Superconformal Algebras of String Compactifications with a $G$-structure

Abstract:In this thesis we study string compactifications on manifolds equipped with a $G$-structure, placing a special emphasis on the interplay between geometry and physics. We follow two complementary approaches. In the first part of the thesis we adopt a sigma model perspective and focus on the worldsheet superconformal field theory. We consider compactifications on 7-dimensional Extra Twisted Connected Sum (ETCS) G$_2$ manifolds as well as 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum (GCS) Spin(7) manifolds. We find that the geometric construction is reproduced in the worldsheet algebra via a diamond of algebra inclusions. In the second part of the thesis we change gears and consider string compactifications from a supergravity point of view. In particular, we focus on compactifications of the heterotic string down to three spacetime dimensions preserving minimal supersymmetry $\mathcal{N}=1$, which are described by the heterotic G$_2$ system. We construct new families of AdS$_3$ solutions to this system on homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds with squashed metrics.

Abstract:Complimentary geometric and non-geometric consistent reductions of IIB supergravity are studied. The geometric reductions on the identified group manifold X are found to have a gauge symmetry with Lie algebroid structure, generalising that found in similar reductions of the Bosonic string theory and eleven-dimensional supergravity. Examples of such compactifications are considered and the symmetry breaking in each case is analysed. Complimentary to the reductions on X are the nine-dimensional S-duality twisted reductions considered in the second half of the paper. The general reduced theory is given and symmetry breaking is investigated. The non-geometric S-duality twisted reductions and their relation to geometric reductions of F-Theory on X is briefly discussed.
