Abstract:In this thesis we study string compactifications on manifolds equipped with a $G$-structure, placing a special emphasis on the interplay between geometry and physics. We follow two complementary approaches. In the first part of the thesis we adopt a sigma model perspective and focus on the worldsheet superconformal field theory. We consider compactifications on 7-dimensional Extra Twisted Connected Sum (ETCS) G$_2$ manifolds as well as 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum (GCS) Spin(7) manifolds. We find that the geometric construction is reproduced in the worldsheet algebra via a diamond of algebra inclusions. In the second part of the thesis we change gears and consider string compactifications from a supergravity point of view. In particular, we focus on compactifications of the heterotic string down to three spacetime dimensions preserving minimal supersymmetry $\mathcal{N}=1$, which are described by the heterotic G$_2$ system. We construct new families of AdS$_3$ solutions to this system on homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds with squashed metrics.

Abstract:We give a complete formulation of Poincare gauge theory, starting from the fibre bundle formulation to the resultant Riemann-Cartan spacetime. We also introduce several diverse gravity theories descendent from the Poincare gauge theory. Especially, the cosmological effect of the simple scalar-torsion (0^+) mode in Poincare gauge theory of gravity is studied. In the theory, we treat the geometric effect of torsion as an effective quantity, which behaves like dark energy and study the effective equation of state (EoS) of the model. We construct the extra dimension theory of teleparallel gravity by using differential forms. In particular, we discuss the Kaluza-Klein and braneworld scenarios by direct dimensional reduction and specifying the shape of fibre. The FLRW cosmological scenario of the braneworld theory in teleparallel gravity demonstrates its equivalence to general relativity (GR) in the field equations, namely they possess the same Friedmann equation.

Abstract:In this contribution, we present the geometric approach to supergravity. In the first part, we discuss in some detail the peculiarities of the approach and apply the formalism to the case of pure supergravity in four space-time dimensions. In the second part, we extend the discussion to theories in higher dimensions, which include antisymmetric tensors of degree higher than one, focussing on the case of eleven dimensional space-time. Here, we report the formulation first introduced in 1981 by R. D'Auria and P. Frè, corresponding to a generalization of a Chevalley-Eilenberg Lie algebra, together with some more recent results, pointing out the relation of the formalism with the mathematical framework of $L_\infty$ algebras.

JT gravity from non-Abelian T-duality

Abstract:We study the geometries obtained by performing super non-Abelian T-duality of the Principal Chiral Model on OSp$(1|2)$. While the initial model represents an appropriate 3D supergravity background, interpretable as the superspace version of AdS$_{3}$, the T-dual model fails solving the 3D supergravity torsion constraints. We argue that this has to do with a factorisation pattern taking place under dualisation: the dual 3D geometry can be rewritten as the supersymmetric version of AdS$_{2}$, satisfying the supergravity constraints, fibered over what we interpret as the superspace equivalent of the standard bosonic line. We discuss an interesting connection between T-duals of generic Principal Chiral Models and Poisson sigma models. We exploit it to show that in a suitable limit the dual action studied in this work gives rise to JT (super)gravity.

Abstract: Forty-six years after the birth of supersymmetry in 1973 from works of Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino, the standard quantum-field-theorists and particle physicists' language of `superspaces', `supersymmetry', and `supersymmetric action functionals in superspace formulation' as given in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, XXII of the classic on supersymmetry and supergravity: Julius Wess & Jonathan Bagger: Supersymmetry and Supergravity (2nd ed.), is finally polished, with only minimal mathematical patches added for consistency and accuracy in dealing with nilpotent objects from the Grassmann algebra involved, to a precise setting in the language of complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. This is completed after the lesson learned from D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) and the notion of `$d=3+1$, $N=1$ towered superspaces' as complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-schemes, their distinguished sectors, and purge-evaluation maps first developed in SUSY(1) (= D(14.1.Supp.1)) (arXiv:1902.06246 [hep-th]) and further polished in the current work. While the construction depends on a choice of a trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections, as long as the transformation law and the induced isomorphism under a change of trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections are understood, any object or structure thus defined or constructed is mathematically well-defined. The construction can be generalized to all other space-time dimensions with simple or extended supersymmetries. This is part of the mathematical foundation required to study fermionic D-branes in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz formulation.

Abstract:We consider an expression for the supercurrent in the superconformal formulation of N=1 supergravity. A chiral compensator provides the supersymmetric formulation of the Callan-Coleman-Jackiw (CCJ) improved stress energy tensor, when the conformal gauge is used. Superconformal and non-superconformal matter give different conservation laws of the supercurrent, when coupled to the curvature supermultiplets which underlie the local superspace geometry. This approach can be applied to any set of auxiliary fields and it is useful to classify rigid curved superspace geometries. Examples with four supersymmetries are briefly described.
The Geometry of GTPs and 5d SCFTs

Abstract:We make progress in understanding the geometry associated to the Generalized Toric Polygons (GTPs) encoding the Physics of 5d Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs), by exploiting the connection between Hanany-Witten transitions and the mathematical notion of polytope mutations. From this correspondence, it follows that the singular geometry associated to a GTP is identical to that obtained by regarding it as a standard toric diagram, but with some of its resolutions frozen in way that can be determined from the invariance of the so-called period under mutations. We propose the invariance of the period as a new criterion for distinguishing inequivalent brane webs, which allows us to resolve a puzzle posed in the literature. A second mutation invariant is the Hilbert Series of the geometry. We employ this invariant to perform quantitative checks of our ideas by computing the Hilbert Series of the BPS quivers associated to theories related by mutation. Lastly, we discuss the physical interpretation of a mathematical result ensuring the existence of a flat fibration over $\mathbb{P}^1$ interpolating between geometries connected by mutation, which we identify with recently introduced deformations of the corresponding BPS quivers.

The surprising structure of non-relativistic 11-dimensional supergravity

Abstract:We study a non-relativistic limit of 11-dimensional supergravity. This limit leads to a theory with an underlying membrane Newton-Cartan geometry. Consistency of the non-relativistic limit requires the imposition of constraints, requiring that certain bosonic and fermionic torsions and curvatures vanish. We investigate the implications of two versions of these constraints. In one version, we keep only 16 supersymmetry transformations, leading to a simple (purely bosonic) constraint structure but an unusual realisation of the supersymmetry algebra which does not close into diffeomorphisms. In the other, we keep all 32 supersymmetry transformations. This requires a complicated sequence of bosonic and fermionic constraints, eventually involving three derivatives of bosonic fields. We argue, with a linearised calculation, that this sequence of constraints terminates. Furthermore, we show that there exists a family of supersymmetric solutions satisfying these constraints, containing the non-relativistic limit of the M2 supergravity solution recently obtained by Lambert and Smith as a background relevant for non-relativistic holography.

Geometrical Heavy Lifting: Yang-Mills, Spin, and Torsion in Dynamical Projective Gravitation

Abstract:Thomas-Whitehead (TW) gravity is a gauge theory of gravitation based on projective geometry. The theory maintains projective symmetry through the TW connection, an affine connection over the volume bundle of the spacetime manifold. TW gravity obtains dynamics through Lovelock expansions in the action while preserving general relativity as a weak field limit. In this paper we clarify the process of lifting tensor and spinor fields from spacetime to the volume bundle and demonstrate that a choice of lifting amounts to a gauge fixing condition. This leads to a natural extension of previous work, where we now realize these prior constructions have been restricted to a particular gauge. In pursuit of generality, we also introduce torsion to the TW connection, leading to new dynamics. In particular, the appearance of torsion induces interaction terms involving gravitational coupling with Yang-Mills fields and Dirac spinors. An explicit realization of this is a geometrically sourced chiral mass term arising from the torsion dynamics.

Abstract:We consider string/M-theory reductions on a compact space X=Xloc∪X∘ , where Xloc contains the singular locus and X∘ is its complement. For the resulting supergravity theories, we construct a suitable symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT) associated with the boundary ∂Xloc∐∂X∘ . We propose that boundary conditions for different Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield branes wrapping the same boundary cycles must be correlated for the SymTFT to yield an absolute theory consistent with quantum gravity. Using heterotic/M-theory duality, this constraint can be translated into a field-theoretic statement, which restricts the global structure of d≥7 , N=1 supergravity theories to reproduce precisely the landscape of untwisted toroidal heterotic compactifications. Furthermore, for six-dimensional (2, 0) theories, we utilize a subtle interplay between gauged 0-, 2-, and 4-form symmetries to provide a bottom-up explanation of the correlated boundary conditions in K3 compactifications of type IIB. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.126005 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Toric gravitational instantons in gauged supergravity

Abstract:We introduce a general class of toric gravitational instantons in $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity, namely Euclidean supersymmetric solutions with $U(1)^2$ isometry. Such solutions are specified by a "supergravity labelled polytope", where the labels encode the 4-manifold topology, the choice of magnetic fluxes, and certain signs associated to the Killing spinor. Equivariant localization then allows us to write down the gravitational free energy for such a solution, assuming it exists, and study its properties. These results open the way for a systematic study of holography in this setting, where the dual large $N$ field theories are defined on the boundary 3-manifolds, which are (squashed) lens spaces $L(p,q)$ or generalizations with orbifold singularities.

Super-representations of 3-manifolds and torsion polynomials

Abstract:Torsion polynomials connect the genus of a hyperbolic knot (a topological invariant) with the discrete faithful representation (a geometric invariant). Using a new combinatorial structure of an ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold that involves edges as well as faces, we associate a polynomial to a cusped hyperbolic manifold that conjecturally agrees with the $\BC^2$-torsion polynomial, which conjecturally detects the genus of the knot. The new combinatorics is motivated by super-geometry in dimension 3, and more precisely by super-Ptolemy assignments of ideally triangulated 3-manifolds and their $\mathrm{OSp}_{2|1}(\BC)$-representations. Extended section 4, and added superalgebras with a single odd generator.

Abstract:<p>Inspired by superstring field theory, we study differential, integral, and inverse forms and their mutual relations on a supermanifold from a sheaf-theoretical point of view. In particular, the formal distributional properties of integral forms are recovered in this scenario in a geometrical way. Further, we show how inverse forms virgolette extend" the ordinary de Rham complex on a supermanifold, thus providing a mathematical foundation of the Large Hilbert Space used in superstrings. Last, we briefly discuss how the Hodge diamond of a supermanifold looks like, and we explicitly compute it for super Riemann surfaces.</p>

Abstract:We start by a concise yet thorough revision of four-dimensional superspace supergravity. We present curved superspace geometry, for arbitrary N, including torsion, curvature and Bianchi identities. We motivate the choice of torsion constraints. We then consider the particular cases of N=1,2. In both cases we show how Poincare supergravity can be obtained from conformal supergravity. We see how to obtain the different versions of the Poincare off-shell theory, with distinct compensating multiplets and sets of auxiliary fields. For those versions of N=1,2 supergravities known as "old minimal", we present the solutions to the Bianchi identities, their field content and we show how to write superspace actions for these theories and their extensions using chiral densities and chiral projectors. As concrete applications, we study the supersymmetrization of the two possible R^4 terms in d=4, which are both required as string corrections to supergravity. We conclude by discussing possible applications of these results to open problems on black holes in string theory.

New Torsional Deformations of Locally AdS$_3$ Space

Abstract:We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(\beta_i)$ and the singlet $(\tau)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $\beta_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. The latter acts as a geometric flux which, in some cases, removes the causal singularity.
