Abstract:Although the Galactic supernova rate is about two per century, only few supernova remnants (SNRs) are associated with historical records. There are a few ancient Chinese records of "guest stars" that are probably sightings of supernovae for which the associated SNRs are not established. Here we present an X-ray study of the SNR G7.7-3.7, as observed by XMM-Newton, and discuss its probable association with the guest star of 386 CE. This guest star occurred in the ancient Chinese asterism Nan-Dou, which is part of Sagittarius. The X-ray morphology of G7.7-3.7 shows an arc-like feature in the SNR south, which is characterized by an under-ionized plasma with subsolar abundances, a temperature of 0.4-0.8. keV, and a density of similar to 0.5(d/4 kpc)(-0.5) cm(-3). A small shock age of 1.2 +/- 0.6(d/4 kpc)(0.5) kyr is inferred from the low ionization timescale of 2.4(-1.3)(+1.1) x 10(10) cm(-3) s of the X-ray arc. The low foreground absorption (N-H = 3.5 +/- 0.5 x 10(21) cm(-2)) of G7.7-3.7 made the supernova explosion visible to the naked eye on the Earth. The position of G7.7-3.7 is consistent with the event of 386. CE, and the X-ray properties suggest that its age is also consistent. Interestingly, the association between G7.7-3.7 and guest star. 386 suggests that the supernova was a low-luminosity supernova, thus explaining the brief visibility (2-4 months) of the guest star.
An Astronomical Interpretation of the Nebra Sky Disc

Abstract:We agree with the interpretation of W. Schlosser, that the Nebra Sky Disc is a reminder of a method of determining a start date (and possibly also an end date) of the farming year. We extend this interpretation. We think that we found the constellation Taurus on the Disc, which forms by addition of three stars from the constellation Gemini the pattern of a plough of Bronze Age. Moreover we found a line on the disc consisting of the stars epsilon Gem, theta Aur, beta Aur and alpha Aur, which we called the Auriga line. We think that the Nebra people used the Auriga line to determine the day (which we call beta day) on which the Pleiades are vertically below beta Aur at dusk in February. We found a second representation of the Auriga line on the Disc where the distance ratios between the stars are very precisely equal to the distance ratios in the sky, and where the Pleiades are vertically below beta Aur. This proves that the Nebra people must have measured the distances, and that our hypothesis is correct. The beta day could have been used to harmonize a lunisolar calendar with the solar year. However, the most likely possibility seems to us that a good sowing date could be determined by setting the sowing on the second round lunar phase after the beta day. (By round lunar phases we mean the full moon and the new moon.) Such a sowing date makes it possible to start a week count based on the lunar phases with the sowing in order to determine other agricultural dates. The astronomical knowledge for this procedure can be gained by astronomical observations only. No mathematical calculations and import of knowledge from a Mediterranean culture are necessary.

Abstract:The supernova explosion of 1054 AD, which originated the Crab Nebula and Pulsar, is probably the astronomical event which has been most deeply studied by means of historical sources. However, many mysteries and inconsistencies, both among the different sources and between what is deduced by the historical records and the present day astronomical data, are demanding extraordinary efforts by theoretical astrophysicists in order to put all the data in a meaningful framework. An accurate analysis of the historical sources, like the one we are presenting here, may contribute to solve some of these problems.

Abstract:We investigate possible reasons for the absence of historical records of the supernova of 1054 in Europe. At the same time, we search for the new evidences as well. We establish that the previously acclaimed 'Arabic' records from ibn Butlan originate from Europe. As one of the most prominent scientists of the era, he was in Constantinople at the time of the supernova and actively participated in the medieval Church feud known as the Great Schism. Next, we reconstruct the European sky at the time of the event and find that the 'new star' (SN 1054) was in the west while the planet Venus was on the opposite side of the sky (in the east) with the Sun sited directly between these two equally bright objects, as documented in East-Asian records.

Abstract:The Earth sits inside a 300pc-wide void that was carved by a series of supernova explosions that went off tens of millions of years ago, pushing away interstellar gas and creating a bubble-like structure. The 60Fe peak deposits found in the deep-sea crust have been interpreted by the imprints left by the ejecta of supernova explosions occurring about 2-3 and 5-6 Myr ago. It is likely that the 60Fe peak at about 2-3 Myr originated from a supernova occurring in the Upper Centaurus Lupus association in Scorpius Centaurus (140 pc) or the Tucana Horologium association (70 pc). Whereas, the 5-6 Myr peak is likely attributed to the solar system's entrance into the bubble. In this Letter, we show that the supernova source responsible for synthesizing the 60Fe peak deposits 2-3 Myr ago was also likely a Galactic PeVatron source. We demonstrate that this supernova can consistently explain the "knee" in the cosmic-ray spectrum and the large-scale anisotropy between 100 TeV and 100 PeV. Matching the intensity and shape of the cosmic-ray spectrum allows us to place stringent constraints on the cosmic-ray energy content from the supernova as well as on the cosmic-ray diffusion coefficient. Making use of such constraints we provide a robust estimate of the temporal variation of terrestrial ionizing cosmic radiation levels and discuss their implications in the development of early life on Earth by plausibly influencing the mutation rate and, as such, conceivably assisting in the evolution of complex organisms.

Evidence for late-time dust formation in the ejecta of supernova SN~1995N from emission-line asymmetries

Abstract:We present a study of the dust associated with the core-collapse supernova SN~1995N. Infrared emission detected 14--15 years after the explosion was previously attributed to thermally echoing circumstellar material associated with the SN progenitor. We argue that this late-time emission is unlikely to be an echo, and is more plausibly explained by newly formed dust in the supernova ejecta, indirectly heated by the interaction between the ejecta and the CSM. Further evidence in support of this scenario comes from emission line profiles in spectra obtained 22 years after the explosion; these are asymmetric, showing greater attenuation on the red wing, consistent with absorption by dust within the expanding ejecta. The spectral energy distribution and emission line profiles at epochs later than $\sim$5000 days are both consistent with the presence of about 0.4~M$_\odot$ of amorphous carbon dust. The onset of dust formation is apparent in archival optical spectra, taken between 700 and 1700 days after the assumed explosion date. As this is considerably later than most other instances where the onset of dust formation has been detected, we argue that the explosion date must be later than previously assumed.

A new approach to generate a catalogue of potential historical novae

Abstract:<p>Ancient Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese observers left us records of celestial sightings, the so‐called "guest stars" dated up to ∼2500 years ago. Their identification with modern observable targets could open interesting insights into the long‐term behavior of astronomical objects, as shown by the successful identification of eight galactic supernovae. Here, we evaluate the possibility to identify ancient classical novae with presently known cataclysmic variables (CVs). For this purpose, we have developed a method which reconsiders in detail positions and sizes of ancient asterisms, in order to define areas on the sky that should be used for a search of modern counterparts. These areas range from a few to several 100 square degrees, depending on the details given in ancient texts; they should replace the single coordinate values given by previous authors. Any appropriate target (CVs, X‐ray binaries etc.) within these areas can be considered as a valid candidate for identification with the corresponding ancient event. Based on the original descriptions of several 100 old events, we selected those without movement and without a tail (to exclude comets) and which was not only visible within a certain hour (to exclude meteors). This way, we present a shortlist of 24 most promising events which could refer to classical nova eruptions. Our method is checked by applying it to the known SN identifications, leading to a margin of error between 0 and 4.5 degrees, meaning that some SN remnants lay exactly inside the areas given by the historical reports while in some other cases they are laying at considerable distances.</p>

Identification of Z Cam's Historical Counterpart: The Quest for an Ancient Nova

Abstract:In recent astronomical discussions, attempts have been made to link the known dwarf nova Z Cam to historical celestial events, particularly the "guest star" phenomenon reported in China in 77 BCE. Despite other suggestions and the problems with regard to the location of the event in 77 BCE, its identification with Z Cam is used in the Variable Star IndeX (VSX) of the AAVSO and in several research papers that aim to derive knowledge on the evolution of cataclysmic variables. Through the reconstruction of the super-constellation of the Purple Palace in the Han Dynasty, we found that Z Cam is actually located outside this enclosure, contradicting the records of the 77 BCE guest star being "within the Purple Palace". With newly found text versions of the guest star in 77 BCE, we narrowed down the position given therein. Combined with a new analysis of accompanying divination text leads to the conclusion that this guest star was actually a comet. Finally, through meticulous examination and comparison, we conclude that the guest star of 369 CE appears the most plausible candidate for Z Cam's historical counterpart, aligning with both textual evidence and modern astronomical observations.

The Path from the Chinese and Japanese Observations of Supernova 1181 AD, to a Type Iax Supernova, to the Merger of CO and ONe White Dwarfs

Abstract:In 1181 AD, Chinese and Japanese observers reported an unmoving bright `Guest Star' in the constellation Chuanshe, visible for 185 days. In 2013, D. Patchick discovered what turned out to be a unique nebula surrounding a unique star, with the structure named `Pa 30', while subsequent workers made connections to mergers of white dwarfs, to the supernova subclass of low-luminosity Type Iax, and to the 1181 transient. Here, I provide a wide range of new observational evidence: First, detailed analysis of the original Chinese and Japanese reports places the `Guest Star' of 1181 into a small region with the only interesting source being Pa 30. Second, the ancient records confidently place the peak magnitude as 0.0$>$$V_{\rm peak}$$>$$-$1.4, and hence peak absolute magnitude $-$14.5$>$$M_{\rm V,peak}$$>$$-$16.0 mag. Third, the Pa 30 central star is fading from $B$=14.9 in 1889, to $B$=16.20 in 1950, to $B$=16.58 in 2022. Fourth, recent light curves show typical variability with full-amplitude of 0.24 mag on time-scales of one day and longer, critically with no coherent modulations for periods from 0.00046--10 days to strict limits. Fifth, the spectral energy distribution from the far-infrared to the ultraviolet is a nearly-perfect power-law with $F_{\nu}\propto\nu^{0.99\pm0.07}$, observed luminosity 128$\pm$24 L$_{\odot}$, and absolute magnitude $M_{\rm V}$=$+$1.07. I collect my new evidences with literature results to make a confident case to connect the East-Asian observations to a supernova, then to Pa 30, then to a low-luminosity Type Iax SN, then to the only possible explosion mechanism as a merger between CO and ONe white dwarfs.

Abstract:When the planet formation process begins in the disks surrounding young stars is still an open question. Annular substructures such as rings and gaps in disks are intertwined with planet formation, and thus their presence or absence is commonly used to investigate the onset of this process. Current observations show a limited number of disks surrounding protostars exhibiting annular substructures, all of them in the Class I stage. The lack of observed features in most of these sources may indicate a late emergence of substructures, but it could also be an artifact of these disks being optically thick. To mitigate the problem of optical depth, we investigate substructures within a very young Class 0 disk characterized by a low inclination using observations at longer wavelengths. We use 3 mm ALMA observations tracing dust emission at a resolution of 7 au to search for evidence of annular substructures in the disk around the deeply embedded Class 0 protostar Oph A SM1. The observations reveal a nearly face-on disk (i$\sim$16$^{\circ}$) extending up to 40 au. The radial intensity profile shows a clear deviation from a smooth profile near 30 au, which we interpret as the presence of either a gap at 28 au or a ring at 34 au with Gaussian widths of $\sigma=1.4^{+2.3}_{-1.2}$ au and $\sigma=3.9^{+2.0}_{-1.9}$ au, respectively. The 3 mm emission at the location of the possible gap or ring is determined to be optically thin, precluding the possibility that this feature in the intensity profile is due to the emission being optically thick. Annular substructures resembling those in the more evolved Class I and II disks could indeed be present in the Class 0 stage, earlier than previous observations suggested. Similar observations of embedded disks in which the high optical depth problem can be mitigated are clearly needed to better constrain the onset of substructures in the embedded stages.

Abstract:The results of precise analysis of elements and isotopes in meteorites, comets, the Earth, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, the solar wind, solar flares, and the solar photosphere since 1960 reveal fingerprints of a local supernova (SN), undiluted by interstellar material. Heterogeneous SN debris formed the planets. The Sun formed on the neutron (n) rich SN core. The ground-state masses of nuclei reveal repulsive n-n interactions that trigger n-emission and a series of nuclear reactions that generate solar luminosity, the solar wind, and the measured flux of solar neutrinos. The location of the Sun's high-density core shifts relative to the solar surface as gravitational forces exerted by the major planets cause the Sun to experience abrupt acceleration and deceleration, like a yoyo on a string, in its orbit about the ever-changing centre-of-mass of the solar system. Solar cycles (surface magnetic activity, solar eruptions, and sunspots) and major climate changes arise from changes in the depth of the energetic SN core remnant in the interior of the Sun.

Evidence of nearby supernovae affecting life on Earth

Abstract:Observations of open star clusters in the solar neighborhood are used to calculate local supernova (SN) rates for the past 510 million years (Myr). Peaks in the SN rates match passages of the Sun through periods of locally increased cluster formation which could be caused by spiral arms of the Galaxy. A statistical analysis indicates that the Solar System has experienced many large short-term increases in the flux of Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) from nearby supernovae. The hypothesis that a high GCR flux should coincide with cold conditions on the Earth is borne out by comparing the general geological record of climate over the past 510 million years with the fluctuating local SN rates. Surprisingly a simple combination of tectonics (long-term changes in sea level) and astrophysical activity (SN rates) largely accounts for the observed variations in marine biodiversity over the past 510 Myr. An inverse correspondence between SN rates and carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) levels is discussed in terms of a possible drawdown of CO$_2$ by enhanced bioproductivity in oceans that are better fertilized in cold conditions - a hypothesis that is not contradicted by data on the relative abundance of the heavy isotope of carbon, $^{13}$C.

Abstract:In a previous work, we establish that the acclaimed 'Arabic' records of SN 1054 from ibn Butlan originate from Europe. Here, we investigate the engravings on tombstones (stećci) from several necropolises in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina (far from the influence of the Church) as a possible European 'record' of SN 1054. Certainly, knowledge and understanding of celestial events (such as supernovae) were somewhat poor in the mid-XI century.

Abstract:We present observational evidence that an aspherical supernova explosion could have occurred in the First stars in the early universe. Our results are based on the First determination of a Zn abundance in a Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph high-resolution UV spectrum of a hyper metal-poor (HMP) star, HE1327-2326, with [Fe/H](NLTE) = -5.2. We determine [Zn/Fe] = 0.80$\pm$0.25 from a UV Zn I line at 2138 detected at $3.4\sigma$. Yields of a 25M$_{\odot}$ aspherical supernova model with artificially modified densities exploding with E = 5x10$^{51}$ ergs best match the entire abundance pattern of HE1327-2326. Such high-entropy hypernova explosions are expected to produce bipolar outfows which could facilitate the external enrichment of small neighboring galaxies. This has already been predicted by theoretical studies of the earliest star forming minihalos. Such a scenario would have significant implications for the chemical enrichment across the early universe as HMP Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars such as HE1327-2326 might have formed in such externally enriched environments.

Abstract:Astronomical observations and isotopic measurements of meteorites suggest that substructures are common in protoplanetary disks and may even have existed in the solar nebula. Here, we conduct paleomagnetic measurements of chondrules in CO carbonaceous chondrites to investigate the existence and nature of these disk substructures. We show that the paleomagnetism of chondrules in CO carbonaceous chondrites indicates the presence of a 101 +/- 48 mu T field in the solar nebula in the outer solar system (similar to 3 to 7 AU from the Sun). The high intensity of this field relative to that inferred from inner solar system (similar to<3 AU) meteorites indicates a factor of similar to 5 to 150 mismatch in nebular accretion between the two reservoirs. This suggests substantial mass loss from the disk associated with a major disk substructure, possibly due to a magnetized disk wind.
A Re-interpretation of Historical References to the Supernova of 1054 AD

Abstract:In this paper we re-examine historical references to the supernova event of 1054 AD with a view to establishing a sequence astronomical events which minimizes apparent conflicts between the various sources. We find that the explosion of the supernova is likely to have occurred weeks to months before the commonly accepted date of July 4th 1054. This view is strongly supported by a number of European references to events visible in the evening sky during the spring which are likely to be associated with the appearance of the supernova. We find the best fit to the light curve based on Chinese observations and a maximum visible apparent magnitude for a supernova located at the distance to the Crab Nebula also confirms the earlier explosion date.

Abstract:We present high-cadence photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2023axu, a classical Type II supernova with an absolute V-band peak magnitude of –17.2 ± 0.1 mag. SN 2023axu was discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc (DLT40) survey within 1 day of the last nondetection in the nearby galaxy NGC 2283 at 13.7 Mpc. We modeled the early light curve using a recently updated shock cooling model that includes the effects of line blanketing and found the explosion epoch to be MJD 59971.48 ± 0.03 and the probable progenitor to be a red supergiant. The shock cooling model underpredicts the overall UV data, which point to a possible interaction with circumstellar material. This interpretation is further supported by spectral behavior. We see a ledge feature around 4600 Å in the very early spectra (+1.1 and +1.5 days after the explosion), which can be a sign of circumstellar interaction. The signs of circumstellar material are further bolstered by the presence of absorption features blueward of Hα and Hβ at day >40, which is also generally attributed to circumstellar interaction. Our analysis shows the need for high-cadence early photometric and spectroscopic data to decipher the mass-loss history of the progenitor.

Abstract:The 450th anniversary of the discovery of the SN 1572 supernova event was celebrated in 2022. A closer look at the historical development of the field of supernova astronomy reveals the scientific importance of Tycho Brahe's 1572 observations of this "new star". In their quest to learn more about the new type of stellar explosion and subsequent evolution, the initial protagonists in this field (Baader and Zwicky among others) gradually turned their attention to the final remnant state of these supernova events. Since the remnant object thought to be associated with the extragalactic supernova event was found to be very dim, the focus quickly shifted toward nearby galactic events. It is at this point where Tycho Brahe's observations played an important and often overlooked role in the context of the development of stellar evolution as a scientific field. Tycho Brahe's meticulous and detailed recordings of the change in brightness of the new star not only allowed modern astronomers to classify SN 1572 as a supernova event but also helped them pinpoint the exact astrometric location of SN 1572. These findings helped to empirically link extragalactic supernova events to nearby past supernova remnants in the Milky Way. This enabled subsequent observations allowing further characterization. Transforming the historical recordings to a standardized photometric system also allowed the classification of SN 1572 as a type I supernova event.

On the possibilities of classical nova identifications among historical Far Eastern guest star observations

Abstract:More than 100 guest star observations have been obtained by Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese astronomers between ~600 BCE and ~1690 CE. Comparing the coordinates from the information given in old texts for eight supernova recoveries with modern supernova remnant positions, we estimate a typical positional accuracy of the order of 0.3 to 7 deg for these supernovae. These values turn out to be also a start for the expected deviation angle between a classical nova observed as a guest star and its modern counterpart among known cataclysmic variables (CVs). However, there are considerable disagreements among modern authors in the interpretation of ancient Far Eastern texts, emphasizing the need to consult again the original historic sources, in order to improve the positioning reliability. We also discuss the typical amplitudes of well observed classical novae and find that modern counterparts of nova guest stars should be V = 18 mag and thus easily observable. In this context we also consider the "hibernation scenario" and conclude that it is impossible to decide from currently-available observations whether hibernation is common. In addition to the limiting magnitude around 2 mag for ancient guest star detections mentioned in the literature, we consider the possibility that also fainter guest stars (4-5 mag) could have been detected by ancient observers and give arguments in favor of this possibility. For these limits we compare the expected nova detection rate of ancient naked-eye observers with that during modern times, and conclude that they coincide in order of magnitude, which implies that, indeed, a considerable number of classical nova remnants should be hidden among the Far Eastern guest star reports. Finally, we present a statistical analysis of the probability of casual misidentifications based on frequency and galactic distribution of CVs in the AAVSO-VSX catalogue.
