Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore an abstraction of uniform integrability in vector lattices and demonstrate its application by providing a positive solution to an open question posed by Kuo, Rodda, and Watson. Specifically, we show that for finite p and with T as a conditionally expectation operator, spaces Lp are sequentially complete. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a de La Vallé Poussin Theorem does not hold in the general setting of vector lattices.

Abstract:Distance function defined by Chang is an important tool for describing closeness and constructing topologies and uniformities on MV-algebras. Unfortunately, this function on residuated lattices is not good enough as on MV-algebras since it is not compatible with operations on residuated lattices. Based on this fact, the axioms of similarity operators and semi-norms are introduced on residuated lattices. By using the above two tools, uniformities and topologies are induced, respectively. Residuated lattices equipped with these uniformities (topologies) are proved to be uniform (topological) residuated lattices. Finally, two kinds of sequential completions for these uniformities are given and they are isomorphic.

Abstract:We study quantitative versions of the Schur property and weak sequential completeness, proceeding thus with investigations started by G. Godefroy, N. Kalton and D. Li and continued by H. Pfitzner and the authors. We show that the Schur property of $\ell_1$ holds quantitatively in the strongest possible way and construct an example of a Banach space which is quantitatively weakly sequentially complete, has the Schur property but fails the quantitative form of the Schur property.

Abstract:In the category $\mathbf{V}$ of unital archimedean vector lattices, four notions of uniform completeness obtain. In all cases completeness requires the convergence of uniformly Cauchy sequences; the completions are distinguished by the manner in which the convergence is regulated. Ordinary uniform convergence is regulated by the canonical unit $1$. Inner relative uniform convergence, here termed iru-convergence, is regulated by an arbitrary positive element. Outer relative uniform convergence, here termed oru-convergence, is regulated by an arbitrary positive element of a vector lattice containing the given object as a sub-vector lattice. *-convergence is equivalent to ordinary uniform convergence on certain specified quotients of the vector lattice. In each case the complete objects form a full monoreflective subcategory of $\mathbf{V}$, denoted respectively $\mathbf{ucV}$, $\mathbf{irucV}$, $\mathbf{orucV}$, and $\mathbf{*cV}$. In this article we provide a unified development of these completions by means of a novel pointfree variant of the classical Yosida adjunction.

Abstract:UNIFORM algebras have been extensively investigated because of their importance in the theory of uniform approximation and as examples of complex Banach algebras. An interesting question is whether analogous algebras exist when a complete valued field other than the complex numbers is used as the underlying field of the algebra. In the Archimedean setting, this generalisation is given by the theory of real function algebras introduced by S. H. Kulkarni and B. V. Limaye in the 1980s. This thesis establishes a broader theory accommodating any complete valued field as the underlying field by involving Galois automorphisms and using non-Archimedean analysis. The approach taken keeps close to the original definitions from the Archimedean setting. Basic function algebras are defined and generalise real function algebras to all complete valued fields. Several examples are provided. Each basic function algebra is shown to have a lattice of basic extensions related to the field structure. In the non-Archimedean setting it is shown that certain basic function algebras have residue algebras that are also basic function algebras. A representation theorem is established. Commutative unital Banach F-algebras with square preserving norm and finite basic dimension are shown to be isometrically F-isomorphic to some subalgebra of a Basic function algebra. The theory of non-commutative real function algebras was established by K. Jarosz in 2008. The possibility of their generalisation to the non-Archimedean setting is established in this thesis. In the context of complex uniform algebras, a new proof is given using transfinite induction of the Feinstein-Heath Swiss cheese "Classicalisation" theorem.

Abstract:We give a new proof of the completeness of the space $\mathcal{O}_C$ by applying a criterion of compact regularity for the isomorphic sequence space $\lim_{k\rightarrow} (s\hat \otimes (\ell^\infty)_{-k})$. Along the way we show that the strong dual of any quasinormable Fréchet space is a compactly regular $\mathcal{LB}$-space. Finally, we prove that $\lim_{k\rightarrow}(E_k\hat \otimes_\iota F) = (\lim_{k\rightarrow} E_k) \hat \otimes_\iota F$ if the inductive limit $\lim_{k \rightarrow}(E_k \hat \otimes_\iota F)$ is compactly regular.

Abstract:Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T T formulated in a finite language such that T T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results.

A nontrivial uniform algebra Dirichlet on its maximal ideal space

Abstract:It is shown that there exists a nontrivial uniform algebra that is Dirichlet on its maximal ideal space and has a dense set of elements that are exponentials. This answers a 64-year-old question of John Wermer and a 16-year-old question of Garth Dales and Joel Feinstein. Our example is P(X) for a certain compact set X in complex Euclidean 2-space ($\mathbb{C}^2$). It is also shown that there exists a logmodular uniform algebra with proper Shilov boundary but with no nontrivial Gleason parts. This answers a modified form of another 64-year-old question of Wermer.

Abstract:Uniform preorders are a class of combinatory representations of Set-indexed preorders that generalize Pieter Hofstra's basic relational objects. An indexed preorder is representable by a uniform preorder if and only if it has as generic predicate. We study the $\exists$-completion of indexed preorders on the level of uniform preorders, and identify a combinatory condition (called 'relational completeness') which characterizes those uniform preorders with finite meets whose $\exists$-completions are triposes. The class of triposes obtained this way contains relative realizability triposes, for which we derive a characterization as a fibrational analogue of the characterization of realizability toposes given in earlier work.

Abstract:Let ( P ) be a property of -algebras which may be satiesfied or not, and be the set of separable -algebras which satiesfies ( P ). We give a sufficient condition for ( P ) to admit a universal separable element in the sense that for any , there exists a surjective -homomorphism , and use the sufficient condition to show that when ( P ) is "unital with stable rank n ", "the small projection property" or "unital with stable exponential lenght b ", the sufficient condition is satisfied and hence there exists a corresponding universal -algebra. We also give a stronger condition for property ( P ), which additionally implies that the set of corresponding universal -algebras is uncountable, and use it to show that the set of universal unital separable -algebras of stable rank n is uncountable as an example.

Abstract:We prove that order convergence on a Boolean algebra turns it into a compact convergence space if and only if this Boolean algebra is complete and atomic. We also show that on an Archimedean vector lattice, order intervals are compact with respect to order convergence if and only the vector lattice is complete and atomic. Additionally we provide a direct proof of the fact that uo convergence on an Archimedean vector lattice is induced by a topology if and only if the vector lattice is atomic.

Abstract:We study operator algebraic and function theoretic aspects of algebras of bounded nc functions on subvarieties of the nc domain determined by all levels of the unit ball of an operator space (nc operator balls). Our main result is the following classification theorem: under very mild assumptions on the varieties, two such algebras $H^\infty(\mathfrak{V})$ and $H^\infty(\mathfrak{W})$ are completely isometrically and weak-* isomorphic if and only if there is a nc biholomorphism between the varieties. For matrix spanning homogeneous varieties in injective operator balls, we further sharpen this equivalence, showing that there exists a linear isomorphism between the respective balls that maps one variety onto the other; in general, we show, the homogeneity condition cannot be dropped. We highlight some difficulties and open problems, contrasting with the well studied case of row ball.

Abstract:Recently, Buan and Marsh showed that if two complete $\tau$-exceptional sequences agree in all but at most one term, then they must agree everywhere, provided the algebra is $\tau$-tilting finite. They conjectured that the result holds without that assumption. We prove their conjecture. Along the way, we also show that the dimension vectors of the modules in a $\tau$-exceptional sequence are linearly independent.
