Abstract:Cummings, Foreman, and Magidor proved that Jensen's square principle is non-compact at $\aleph_\omega$, meaning that it is consistent that $\square_{\aleph_n}$ holds for all $n<\omega$ while $\square_{\aleph_\omega}$ fails. We investigate the natural question of whether this phenomenon generalizes to singulars of uncountable cofinality. Surprisingly, we show that under some mild hypotheses, the weak square principle $\square_\kappa^*$ is in fact compact at singulars of uncountable cofinality, and that an even stronger version of these hypotheses is not enough for compactness of weak square at $\aleph_\omega$.

Abstract:It is well-known that the square principle $\square_\lambda$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $\lambda^+$, whereas the weak square principle $\square^*_\lambda$ does not. Here we show that if $\mu^{\mathrm{cf}(\lambda)} < \lambda$ for all $\mu < \lambda$, then $\square^*_\lambda$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $E^{\lambda^+}_{\mathrm{cf}(\lambda)}$ in the forcing extension for adding a single Cohen subset of $\lambda^+$. It follows that indestructible forms of simultaneous stationary reflection entail the failure of weak square. We demonstrate this by settling a question concerning the subcomplete forcing axiom (SCFA), proving that SCFA entails the failure of $\square^*_\lambda$ for every singular cardinal $\lambda$ of countable cofinality.

Abstract:We show that the consistency strength of $\kappa$ being $2^\kappa$-square compact is at least weak compact and strictly less than indescribable. This is the first known improvement to the upper bound of strong compactness obtained in 1973 by Hajnal and Juh{\' a}sz.

Abstract:Disjointly strictly singular inclusions between variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(\mu)$ on finite measure are characterized. Suitable criteria in terms of the (bounded or unbounded) exponents are given. It is proved the equivalence of $L$-weak compactness (also called almost compactness) and disjoint strict singularity for variable Lebesgue space inclusions. For infinite measure any inclusion $L^{p(\cdot)}(\mu) \hookrightarrow L^{q(\cdot)}(\mu)$ is not disjointly strictly singular. No restrictions on the exponent are imposed.

Abstract:We study relationships between various set theoretic compactness principles, focusing on the interplay between the three families of combinatorial objects or principles mentioned in the title. Specifically, we show the following. (1) Strong forcing axioms, in general incompatible with the existence of indexed squares, can be made compatible with weaker versions of indexed squares. (2) Indexed squares and indecomposable ultrafilters with suitable parameters can coexist. As a consequence, the amount of stationary reflection known to be implied by the existence of a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is optimal. (3) The Proper Forcing Axiom implies that any cardinal carrying a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is either measurable or a supremum of countably many measurable cardinals. Leveraging insights from the preceding sections, we demonstrate that the conclusion cannot be improved.

Abstract:We give two weak compactness Andô type criteria in variable exponent Lebesgue spaces L p (·) (Ω) on infinite measures. This extends some results of [13] given in the case of finite measures. Spaces L p (·) (Ω) on infinite measures are weakly Banach-Saks when p + < ∞. Suitable weak compactness criteria in Nakano sequence spaces l pn are also deduced.

Abstract:The weak tightness $wt(X)$ of a space $X$ was introduced in [11] with the property $wt(X)\leq t(X)$. We investigate several well-known results concerning $t(X)$ and consider whether they extend to the weak tightness setting. First we give an example of a non-sequential compactum $X$ such that $wt(X)=\aleph_0<t(X)$ under $2^{\aleph_0}=2^{\aleph_1}$. In particular, this demonstrates the celebrated Balogh's Theorem [5] does not hold in general if countably tight is replaced with weakly countably tight. Second, we introduce the notion of an S-free sequence and show that if $X$ is a homogeneous compactum then $|X|\leq 2^{wt(X)\pi_\chi(X)}$. This refines a theorem of De la Vega [12]. In the case where the cardinal invariants involved are countable, this also represents a variation of a theorem of Juhász and van Mill [15]. Third, we show that if $X$ is a $T_1$ space, $wt(X)\leq\kappa$, $X$ is $\kappa^+$-compact, and $\psi(\overline{D},X)\leq 2^\kappa$ for any $D\subseteq X$ satisfying $|D|\leq 2^\kappa$, then a) $d(X)\leq 2^\kappa$ and b) $X$ has at most $2^\kappa$-many $G_\kappa$-points. This is a variation of another theorem of Balogh [6]. Finally, we show that if $X$ is a regular space, $\kappa=L(X)wt(X)$, and $\lambda$ is a caliber of $X$ satisfying $\kappa<\lambda\leq \left(2^{\kappa}\right)^+$, then $d(X)\leq 2^{\kappa}$. This extends of theorem of Arhangel'skii [3].

Abstract:We prove that every weakly square compact cardinal is a strong limit cardinal, and therefore weakly compact. We also study Aronszajn trees with no uncountable finitely splitting subtrees, characterizing them in terms of being Lindelöf with respect to a particular topology. We prove that the class of such trees is consistently non-empty and lies between the classes of Suslin and Aronszajn trees.

On Strong Quasiconvexity of Functions in Infinite Dimensions

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the concept of $\sigma$-quasiconvexity for functions defined on normed vector spaces. This notion encompasses two important and well-established concepts: quasiconvexity and strong quasiconvexity. We start by analyzing certain operations on functions that preserve $\sigma$-quasiconvexity. Next, we present new results concerning the strong quasiconvexity of norm and Minkowski functions in infinite dimensions. Furthermore, we extend a recent result by F. Lara [16] on the supercoercive properties of strongly quasiconvex functions, with applications to the existence and uniqueness of minima, from finite dimensions to infinite dimensions. Finally, we address counterexamples related to strong quasiconvexity.

Abstract:We give a sufficient condition for a pair of Banach spaces $(X,Y)$ to have the following property: whenever $W_1 \subseteq X$ and $W_2 \subseteq Y$ are sets such that $\{x\otimes y: \, x\in W_1, \, y\in W_2\}$ is weakly precompact in the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$, then either $W_1$ or $W_2$ is relatively norm compact. For instance, such a property holds for the pair $(\ell_p,\ell_q)$ if $1<p,q<\infty$ satisfy $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Other examples are given that allow us to provide alternative proofs to some results on multiplication operators due to Saksman and Tylli. We also revisit, with more direct proofs, some known results about the embeddability of $\ell_1$ into $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$ for arbitrary Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, in connection with the compactness of all operators from $X$ to $Y^*$.

Abstract:Strong compactness results for families of functions in seminormed nonnegative cones in the spirit of the Aubin-Lions-Dubinskiĭ lemma are proven, refining some recent results in the literature. The first theorem sharpens slightly a result of Dubinskiĭ (in Mat. Sb. 67(109):609–642, 1965) for seminormed cones. The second theorem applies to piecewise constant functions in time and sharpens slightly the results of Dreher and Jüngel (in Nonlinear Anal. 75:3072–3077, 2012) and Chen and Liu (in Appl. Math. Lett. 25:2252–2257, 2012). An application is given, which is useful in the study of porous-medium or fast-diffusion type equations.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a linear dynamical system, where [Formula: see text] is a separable Banach space and [Formula: see text] is a bounded linear operator. We show that if [Formula: see text] is invertible, then [Formula: see text] is weakly sensitive compact if and only if [Formula: see text] is thickly weakly sensitive compact; and that there exists a system [Formula: see text] such that: (1) [Formula: see text] is cofinitely weakly sensitive compact; (2) [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are weakly sensitive compact; and (3) [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are not syndetically weakly sensitive compact. We also show that if [Formula: see text] is weakly sensitive compact, where [Formula: see text] is a complex Banach space, then the spectrum of [Formula: see text] meets the unit circle.

Abstract:The famous Ascoli-Arzelà theorem served as a springboard for research into compactness in function spaces, particularly spaces of continuous functions. This paper investigates compact subsets of spaces of continuous functions endowed with topologies between the topology of pointwise convergence and the topology of uniform convergence. More precisely, this paper studies necessary and sufficient conditions for a subset to be compact in C λ , u ( X ) for a locally- λ space X when λ ⊇ F( X ), for a hemi- λ λ f -space X when λ ⊆ P S( X ), and for a k -space X when λ ⊇ K( X ). This paper also studies that every bounded subset of C λ , u ( X ) has compact closure for some classes of topological spaces X .

Weak compactness in Lipschitz-free spaces over superreflexive spaces

Abstract:We show that the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$ over a superreflexive Banach space $X$ has the property that every weakly precompact subset of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ is relatively super weakly compact, showing that this space "behaves like $L_1$" in this context. As consequences we show that $\mathcal{F}(X)$ enjoys the weak Banach-Saks property and that every subspace of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ with nontrivial type is superreflexive. Further, weakly compact subsets of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ are super weakly compact and hence have many strong properties. To prove the result, we use a modification of the proof of weak sequential completeness of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ by Kochanek and Pernecká and an appropriate version of compact reduction in the spirit of Aliaga, Noûs, Petitjean and Procházka.

Abstract:We give a new proof of the completeness of the space $\mathcal{O}_C$ by applying a criterion of compact regularity for the isomorphic sequence space $\lim_{k\rightarrow} (s\hat \otimes (\ell^\infty)_{-k})$. Along the way we show that the strong dual of any quasinormable Fréchet space is a compactly regular $\mathcal{LB}$-space. Finally, we prove that $\lim_{k\rightarrow}(E_k\hat \otimes_\iota F) = (\lim_{k\rightarrow} E_k) \hat \otimes_\iota F$ if the inductive limit $\lim_{k \rightarrow}(E_k \hat \otimes_\iota F)$ is compactly regular.

Abstract:Monotone star-finiteness defined by Popvassilev and Porter is a stronger property than countable compactness in Hausdorff spaces. A space X is monotonically star finite if for any open cover of X there exists a finite subset F(u) of X such that X = st(F(u), u) and if and are open covers of X with v refining u, then F(u) C F(v), where st(F(u), u) = U{U is an element of u:U boolean AND F(u) not equal 0}. We show that the lexicographically ordered square is not monotonically star-finite. This answers several questions posed in Popvassilev and Porter (2014) [8]. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:We introduce and investigate a topological version of St\"ackel's 1907 characterization of finite sets, with the goal of obtaining an interesting notion that characterizes usual compactness (or a close variant of it). Define a $T_2$ topological space $(X, \tau)$ to be St\"ackel-compact if there is some linear ordering $\prec$ on $X$ such that every non-empty $\tau$-closed set contains a $\prec$-least and a $\prec$-greatest element. We find that compact spaces are St\"ackel-compact but not conversely, and St\"ackel-compact spaces are countably compact. The equivalence of St\"ackel-compactness with countable compactness remains open, but our main result is that this equivalence holds in scattered spaces of Cantor-Bendixson rank $< \omega_2$ under ZFC. Under V=L, the equivalence holds in all scattered spaces.
