Abstract:We show that the consistency strength of $\kappa$ being $2^\kappa$-square compact is at least weak compact and strictly less than indescribable. This is the first known improvement to the upper bound of strong compactness obtained in 1973 by Hajnal and Juh{\' a}sz.

Abstract:We study relationships between various set theoretic compactness principles, focusing on the interplay between the three families of combinatorial objects or principles mentioned in the title. Specifically, we show the following. (1) Strong forcing axioms, in general incompatible with the existence of indexed squares, can be made compatible with weaker versions of indexed squares. (2) Indexed squares and indecomposable ultrafilters with suitable parameters can coexist. As a consequence, the amount of stationary reflection known to be implied by the existence of a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is optimal. (3) The Proper Forcing Axiom implies that any cardinal carrying a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is either measurable or a supremum of countably many measurable cardinals. Leveraging insights from the preceding sections, we demonstrate that the conclusion cannot be improved.

Transferring Compactness

Abstract:We demonstrate that the technology of Radin forcing can be used to transfer compactness properties at a weakly inaccessible but not strong limit cardinal to a strongly inaccessible cardinal. As an application, relative to the existence of large cardinals, we construct a model of set theory in which there is a cardinal $\kappa$ that is $n$-$d$-stationary for all $n\in \omega$ but not weakly compact. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in the constructible universe $L$, where $\kappa$ being $(n+1)$-$d$-stationary is equivalent to $\kappa$ being $\mathbf{\Pi}^1_n$-indescribable. We also show that it is consistent that there is a cardinal $\kappa\leq 2^\omega$ such that $P_\kappa(\lambda)$ is $n$-stationary for all $\lambda\geq \kappa$ and $n\in \omega$, answering a question of Sakai.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of sequential compactness using barriers on $\omega$ extending naturally the notion introduced in [W. Kubiś and P. Szeptycki, On a topological Ramsey theorem, \emph{Canad. Math. Bull.}, 66 (2023), {156}--{165}]. We improve results from [C. Corral and O. Guzm{á}n and C. L{ó}pez-Callejas, High dimensional sequential compactness, \emph{Fund. Math.}] by building spaces that are $\mathcal{B}$-sequentially compact but no $\mathcal{C}$-sequentially compact when the barriers $\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ satisfy certain rank assumption which turns out to be equivalent to a Katětov-order assumption. Such examples are constructed under the assumption $\mathfrak{b} =\mathfrak{c}$. We also exhibit some classes of spaces that are $\mathcal{B}$-sequentially compact for every barrier $\mathcal{B}$, including some classical classes of compact spaces from functional analysis, and as a byproduct we obtain some results on angelic spaces. Finally we introduce and compute some cardinal invariants naturally associated to barriers.

Abstract:We prove that every weakly square compact cardinal is a strong limit cardinal, and therefore weakly compact. We also study Aronszajn trees with no uncountable finitely splitting subtrees, characterizing them in terms of being Lindelöf with respect to a particular topology. We prove that the class of such trees is consistently non-empty and lies between the classes of Suslin and Aronszajn trees.

Abstract:In the absence of the Axiom of Choice, necessary and sufficient conditions for a locally compact Hausdorff space to have all non-empty second-countable compact Hausdorff spaces as remainders are given in $\mathbf{ZF}$. Among other independence results, the characterization of locally compact Hausdorff spaces having all non-empty metrizable compact spaces as remainders, obtained by Hatzenhuhler and Mattson in $\mathbf{ZFC}$, is proved to be independent of $\mathbf{ZF}$. Urysohn's Metrization Theorem is generalized to the following theorem: every $T_3$-space which admits a base expressible as a countable union of finite sets is metrizable. Applications to solutions of problems concerning the existence of some special metrizable compactifications in $\mathbf{ZF}$ are shown. New concepts of a strongly filterbase infinite set and a dyadically filterbase infinite set are introduced, both stemming from the investigations on compactifications. Set-theoretic and topological definitions of the new concepts are given, and their relationship with certain known notions of infinite sets is investigated in $\mathbf{ZF}$. A new permutation model is introduced in which there exists a strongly filterbase infinite set which is weakly Dedekind-finite. All $\mathbf{ZFA}$-independence results of this article are transferable to $\mathbf{ZF}$.
High dimensional countable compactness and ultrafilters

Abstract:We define several notions of a limit point on sequences with domain a barrier in $[\omega]^{<\omega}$ focusing on the two dimensional case $[\omega]^2$. By exploring some natural candidates, we show that countable compactness has a number of generalizations in terms of limits of high dimensional sequences and define a particular notion of $\alpha$-countable compactness for $\alpha\leq\omega_1$. We then focus on dimension 2 and compare 2-countable compactness with notions previously studied in the literature. We present a number of counterexamples showing that these classes are different. In particular assuming the existence of a Ramsey ultrafilter, a subspace of $\beta\omega$ which is doubly countably compact whose square is not countably compact, answering a question of T. Banakh, S. Dimitrova and O. Gutik. The analysis of this construction leads to some possibly new types of ultrafilters related to discrete, P-points and Ramsey ultrafilters.

Compactness criterion for families of quantum operations in the strong convergence topology and its applications

Abstract:A revised version of the compactness criterion for families of quantum operations in the strong convergence topology (obtained previously) is presented, along with a more detailed proof and the examples showing the necessity of this revision. Several criteria for the existence of a limit point of a sequence of quantum operations w.r.t. the strong convergence are obtained and discussed. Applications in different areas of quantum information theory are described.

Abstract:We show the appearance of spatiotemporal stochastic resonance in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. This phenomenon emerges when a control parameter varies periodically in time around the bifurcation point. By using general scaling arguments and by taking into account the common features occurring in a bifurcation, we outline possible manifestations of the phenomenon in other pattern-forming systems.

A note on Stone-Čech compactification in ZFA

Abstract:Working in Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory with Atoms over an $\omega$-categorical $\omega$-stable structure, we show how \emph{infinite} constructions over definable sets can be encoded as \emph{finite} constructions over the Stone-Čech compactification of the sets. In particular, we show that for a definable set $X$ with its Stone-Čech compactification $\overline{X}$ the following holds: a) the powerset $\mathcal{P}(X)$ of $X$ is isomorphic to the finite-powerset $\mathcal{P}_{\textit{fin}}(\overline{X})$ of $\overline{X}$, b) the vector space $\mathcal{K}^X$ over a field $\mathcal{K}$ is the free vector space $F_{\mathcal{K}}(\overline{X})$ on $\overline{X}$ over $\mathcal{K}$, c) every measure on $X$ is tantamount to a \emph{discrete} measure on $\overline{X}$. Moreover, we prove that the Stone-Čech compactification of a definable set is still definable, which allows us to obtain some results about equivalence of certain formalizations of register machines.

Abstract:It is well-known that the square principle $\square_\lambda$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $\lambda^+$, whereas the weak square principle $\square^*_\lambda$ does not. Here we show that if $\mu^{\mathrm{cf}(\lambda)} < \lambda$ for all $\mu < \lambda$, then $\square^*_\lambda$ entails the existence of a non-reflecting stationary subset of $E^{\lambda^+}_{\mathrm{cf}(\lambda)}$ in the forcing extension for adding a single Cohen subset of $\lambda^+$. It follows that indestructible forms of simultaneous stationary reflection entail the failure of weak square. We demonstrate this by settling a question concerning the subcomplete forcing axiom (SCFA), proving that SCFA entails the failure of $\square^*_\lambda$ for every singular cardinal $\lambda$ of countable cofinality.

Abstract:We continue the study of multidimensional operator multipliers initiated in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0701645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0701645">arXiv:math/0701645</a>]. We introduce the notion of the symbol of an operator multiplier. We characterise completely compact operator multipliers in terms of their symbol as well as in terms of approximation by finite rank multipliers. We give sufficient conditions for the sets of compact and completely compact multipliers to coincide and characterise the cases where an operator multiplier in the minimal tensor product of two C*-algebras is automatically compact. We give a description of multilinear modular completely compact completely bounded maps defined on the direct product of finitely many copies of the C*-algebra of compact operators in terms of tensor products, generalising results of Saar.

Abstract:Intersection models of generic extensions obtained from a commutative projection systems of notions of forcing has recently regained interest, especially in the study of descriptive set theory. Here, we show that it provides a fruitful framework that opens the door to solving some open problems concerning compactness principles of small cardinals. To exemplify, from suitable assumptions, we construct intersection models satisfying ZFC and any of the following: 1. There is a weakly compact cardinal $\kappa$ carrying an indecomposable ultrafilter, yet $\kappa$ is not measurable. This answers a question of Ketonen from the late 1970's. 2. For proper class many cardinals $\lambda$, the least $\lambda$-strongly compact cardinal is singular. This answers a question of Bagaria and Magidor who asked for merely two such cardinals. 3. There is a strongly inaccessible cardinal whose $C$-sequence number is a singular cardinal. This answers a question of Lambie-Hanson and the first author.

Weak compactness in Lipschitz-free spaces over superreflexive spaces

Abstract:We show that the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$ over a superreflexive Banach space $X$ has the property that every weakly precompact subset of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ is relatively super weakly compact, showing that this space "behaves like $L_1$" in this context. As consequences we show that $\mathcal{F}(X)$ enjoys the weak Banach-Saks property and that every subspace of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ with nontrivial type is superreflexive. Further, weakly compact subsets of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ are super weakly compact and hence have many strong properties. To prove the result, we use a modification of the proof of weak sequential completeness of $\mathcal{F}(X)$ by Kochanek and Pernecká and an appropriate version of compact reduction in the spirit of Aliaga, Noûs, Petitjean and Procházka.

Abstract:In this paper we show that the existence of certain first-countable compact-like extensions is equivalent to the equality between corresponding cardinal characteristics of the continuum. For instance, $\mathfrak b=\mathfrak s=\mathfrak c$ if and only if every regular first-countable space of weight $< \mathfrak c$ can be densely embedded into a regular first-countable countably compact space.

Abstract:The relationship between the operator approximation property and the strong operator approximation property has deep significance in the theory of operator algebras. The original definitions of Effros and Ruan, unlike the classical analogues, make no mention of compact operators or compact sets. In this paper we introduce ``compact matrix sets'' which correspond to the two different operator approximation properties, and show that a space has the operator approximation property if and only if the ``operator compact'' operators are contained in the closure of the finite rank operators. We also investigate when the two types of compactness agree, and introduce a natural condition which guarantees that they do.
Compactness of Marked Length Isospectral Sets of Birkhoff Billiard Tables

Abstract:We prove that equivalence classes of marked length isospectral Birkhoff billiard tables are compact in the $C^\infty$ topology, analogous to the Laplace spectral results of Melrose, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak. To do so, we derive a hierarchical structure for the integral invariants of Marvizi and Melrose, or equivalently the coefficients of a caustic length-Lazutkin parameter expansion, which are in turn algebraically equivalent to the Taylor coefficients of Mather's $\beta$ function (also called the mean minimal action). Under a generically satisfied noncoincidence condition, these are also Laplace spectral invariants and can be used to hear the shape of certain drumheads. As a byproduct, we obtain an independent proof of the compactness of Laplace isospectral sets for strictly convex planar billiard tables. The proof of the structure theorem uses an interpolating Hamiltonian for nearly glancing billiard orbits and some analytic number theory to compute its Taylor coefficients.

Abstract:We give a sufficient condition for a pair of Banach spaces $(X,Y)$ to have the following property: whenever $W_1 \subseteq X$ and $W_2 \subseteq Y$ are sets such that $\{x\otimes y: \, x\in W_1, \, y\in W_2\}$ is weakly precompact in the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$, then either $W_1$ or $W_2$ is relatively norm compact. For instance, such a property holds for the pair $(\ell_p,\ell_q)$ if $1<p,q<\infty$ satisfy $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Other examples are given that allow us to provide alternative proofs to some results on multiplication operators due to Saksman and Tylli. We also revisit, with more direct proofs, some known results about the embeddability of $\ell_1$ into $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$ for arbitrary Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, in connection with the compactness of all operators from $X$ to $Y^*$.
