Abstract:Recent experimental results indicate that mixing is enhanced by a reciprocal flow induced inside a levitated droplet with an oscillatory deformation [T. Watanabe et al. Sci. Rep. 8, 10221 (2018)]. Generally, reciprocal flow cannot convect the solutes in time average, and agitation cannot take place. In the present paper, we focus on the diffusion process coupled with the reciprocal flow. We theoretically derive that the diffusion process can be enhanced by the reciprocal flow, and the results are confirmed via numerical calculation of the over-damped Langevin equation with a reciprocal flow.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to enhance the diffusion process through oscillatory deformation in suspended droplets. Specifically, the researchers are concerned with how to enhance the diffusion process through the reciprocal flow induced by oscillatory deformation within the suspended droplets. Normally, the reciprocal flow cannot convect the solute on a time - averaged basis and thus will not cause agitation. However, it has been experimentally observed that this reciprocal flow does indeed enhance the mixing effect within the droplet. Therefore, the researchers hope to explain this phenomenon through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation and reveal the underlying mechanism. ### Research Background 1. **Suspended Droplet System**: The suspended droplet technology can achieve non - contact operation, avoiding the contamination and interference of the container wall, and is suitable for experiments under microgravity conditions. 2. **Acoustic Levitation Technology**: Through the standing wave trough points in the sound wave field, the suspension of droplets can be achieved. By controlling the phase of the sound source, multiple droplets can be suspended simultaneously and their positions can be controlled. 3. **Mixing Technology**: By frequency - modulating the sound pressure field, the suspended droplets can exhibit oscillatory deformation, thereby enhancing internal mixing. ### Research Problems - **Reciprocal Flow and Diffusion**: The reciprocal flow cannot convect the solute on a time - averaged basis and thus will not cause agitation. However, it has been experimentally observed that this reciprocal flow does indeed enhance the mixing effect within the droplet. - **Mechanism Exploration**: The researchers hope to explain this phenomenon through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation and reveal the underlying mechanism. ### Research Methods 1. **Theoretical Analysis**: - Derive equations that describe the reciprocal flow field. - Construct the diffusion equation for oscillatory deformation per cycle. - Discover that the diffusion coefficient includes not only the classical diffusion coefficient but also a term composed of diffusion and flow field, which represents diffusion enhancement. 2. **Numerical Simulation**: - Verify the theoretical results through numerical calculations. - Simulate the over - damped Langevin equation, taking into account the effects of thermal noise and reciprocal flow. ### Main Findings - **Diffusion Enhancement Mechanism**: Although the reciprocal flow cannot cause convection, it can change the shape of fluid elements, making the particle transitions caused by thermal noise irreversible, thereby achieving anisotropic Brownian motion and enhancing diffusion. - **Effective Diffusion Tensor**: The derived effective diffusion tensor indicates that any reciprocal flow may affect the diffusion process. ### Conclusions - **Consistency between Theory and Experiment**: The numerical simulation results are consistent with the theoretical predictions, verifying the mechanism of reciprocal flow - enhanced diffusion. - **Future Research Directions**: Further explore whether different types of reciprocal flows will all enhance diffusion and the application of this mechanism in other systems. Through these studies, the author hopes to provide a theoretical basis for designing more efficient mixing technologies.
