Abstract:The effective diffusion of a solute in a rectangular two-dimensional channel is experimentally studied. We experimentally examine the effective diffusion of Rhodamine B dissolved in water oscillating in a rectangular Hele–Shaw cell. The concentration of Rhodamine B in water is measured by the intensity of its fluorescence emission. In particular, we consider two problems: (i) effective diffusion of solute in water oscillating in a two-dimensional rectangular channel (Hele–Shaw cell) and (ii) effective diffusion of solute in pores between monosized hard spheres randomly packed in a rectangular Hele–Shaw cell. It is revealed that the rate of solute mass transfer exceeds the molecular diffusion rate in both cases. It has been demonstrated that when water oscillates between parallel walls, diffusion is accelerated by Taylor dispersion with the effective diffusion coefficient Deff exceeding the molecular diffusion coefficient Dm by 1–2 orders of magnitude. The effective diffusion coefficient Deff depends only on the relative amplitude but not on the frequency of the fluid oscillations in the studied range of frequencies and amplitudes. When the fluid oscillates in the pores of the porous medium, solute transport is faster than in the case of Taylor dispersion. Here, the effective diffusion coefficient depends on both the frequency and amplitude of oscillations. The analysis shows that the experimental data obtained at various frequencies and amplitudes of oscillations are consistent with the relation Deff/Dm∼Pe2 (Pe is the Peclet number). We suggest that the enhanced solute mass transfer is associated with the time-averaged fluid flows that arise due to spatial heterogeneity of the amplitude of water oscillations in the pores between randomly packed hard spheres.

Dynamics of Fluid Displacement in Mixed-Wet Porous Media

Abstract:We identify a distinct two-phase flow invasion pattern in a mixed-wet porous medium. Time-resolved high-resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging is used to study the invasion of water through a small rock sample filled with oil, characterized by a wide non-uniform distribution of local contact angles both above and below 90 ° . The water advances in a connected front, but throats are not invaded in decreasing order of size, as predicted by invasion percolation theory for uniformly hydrophobic systems. Instead, we observe pinning of the three-phase contact between the fluids and the solid, manifested as contact angle hysteresis, which prevents snap-off and interface retraction. In the absence of viscous dissipation, we use an energy balance to find an effective, thermodynamic, contact angle for displacement and show that this angle increases during the displacement. Displacement occurs when the local contact angles overcome the advancing contact angles at a pinned interface: it is wettability which controls the filling sequence. The product of the principal interfacial curvatures, the Gaussian curvature, is negative, implying well-connected phases which is consistent with pinning at the contact line while providing a topological explanation for the high displacement efficiencies in mixed-wet media.

Abstract:Focused ultrasound has experimentally been found to enhance the diffusion of nanoparticles; our aim with this work is to study this effect closer using both experiments and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. Measurements from single particle tracking of 40 nm polystyrene nanoparticles in an agarose hydrogel with and without focused ultrasound are presented and compared with a previous experimental study using 100 nm polystyrene nanoparticles. In both cases, we observed an increase in the mean square displacement during focused ultrasound treatment. We developed a coarse-grained non-equilibrium molecular dynamics model with an implicit solvent to investigate the increase in the mean square displacement and its frequency and amplitude dependencies. This model consists of polymer fibers and two sizes of nanoparticles, and the effect of the focused ultrasound was modeled as an external oscillating force field. A comparison between the simulation and experimental results shows similar mean square displacement trends, suggesting that the particle velocity is a significant contributor to the observed ultrasound-enhanced mean square displacement. The resulting diffusion coefficients from the model are compared to the diffusion equation for a two-time continuous time random walk. The model is found to have the same frequency dependency. At lower particle velocity amplitude values, the model has a quadratic relation with the particle velocity amplitude as described by the two-time continuous time random walk derived diffusion equation, but at higher amplitudes, the model deviates, and its diffusion coefficient reaches the non-hindered diffusion coefficient. This observation suggests that at higher ultrasound intensities in hydrogels, the non-hindered diffusion coefficient can be used.

Role of surfactant-induced Marangoni effects in droplet dynamics on a solid surface in shear flow

Abstract:We address the dynamics of a surfactant-laden droplet on a solid surface in simple shear flow numerically. Our analysis uses the front-tracking method to take surfactant transport into account. The interfacial tension and the slip coefficient, both of which depend heavily on the surfactant concentration, are fully integrated into the generalized Navier boundary condition to model the moving contact lines. Accurate prediction of droplet motion indicates that the surfactant can change droplet behavior drastically. Surfactant-induced effects, such as interfacial tension reduction, the Marangoni stress, and wettability alternation, are investigated for various capillary numbers, surface wettabilities, elasticity numbers, and surface Péclet numbers. Deformation and motion of a sliding droplet are enhanced by the Marangoni effect, which is associated with an interfacial tension gradient. When the capillary number reaches a critical value, the sliding-to-detachment and detachment-to-pinch-off transitions occur. Both transitions can be triggered and accelerated by a surfactant, especially when convection is dominant. As a result, the critical capillary number decreases, but exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with the elasticity number and Péclet number. The mechanisms that underlie the effect of Marangoni stress are discussed by analyzing the distributions of the surfactant concentration and the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the droplet. Accumulation of surfactants near the receding contact line reverses the local concentration gradient, attempts to change its direction along the interface, and delays droplet detachment. Furthermore, the strong surfactant dilution reduces both the surfactant concentration and the interfacial tension gradient, and thereby increasing the critical value for droplet pinch-off.

Abstract:This paper reports research in progress. Two types of domain decomposition have been used in distributed computing with networked workstations for the numerical modeling of full-scale utility boilers. The numerical model is a three-dimensional combustion code which couples turbulent computational fluid dynamics with the chemical reaction process and the radiative heat transfer. Two approaches, here called microscale parallelism and macroscale parallelism, are proposed to study the intrinsic parallelism of typical combustion simulations. We describe the implementation of the microscale parallelism as well as its performance on networked workstations.

Abstract:It has long been recognized that the diffusion of adsorbed molecules and clusters is the key controlling factor in most dynamical processes occurring on surfaces and in nanoscale-confined spaces. The ability to manipulate diffusion is essential for achieving efficient transport in nano- and microstructures and for many other applications. Through simulations and experiments, we found that under the influence of mechanical oscillations, the diffusion coefficient in nanoscale-confined regions can be greatly enhanced. This effect occurs due to bifurcations of particle trajectories caused by the reconstruction of the energy landscape during oscillations. We derive a parameter-free analytical model for the enhanced diffusion that is in excellent agreement with results of our numerical simulations. The oscillation-induced enhancement of diffusion may have interesting and promising applications in such areas as directed molecular transport, sorting of particles, and tribology. Here, our findings have been applied to studies of mechanical cleaning of surfaces from contamination. Through both experiments and simulations, we have shown that using an oscillating slider, one can significantly reduce the concentration of contaminants in a confined region, which is crucial for achieving superlow friction.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel method to simulate lateral diffusion of inclusions in a fluctuating membrane. The regarded systems are governed by two dynamic processes: the height fluctuations of the membrane and the diffusion of the inclusion along the membrane. While membrane fluctuations can be expressed in terms of a dynamic equation which follows from the Helfrich Hamiltonian, the dynamics of the diffusing particle is described by a Langevin or Smoluchowski equation. In the latter equations, the curvature of the surface needs to be accounted for, which makes particle diffusion a function of membrane fluctuations. In our scheme these coupled dynamic equations, the membrane equation and the Langevin equation for the particle, are numerically integrated to simulate diffusion in a membrane. The simulations are used to study the ratio of the diffusion coefficient projected on a flat plane and the intramembrane diffusion coefficient for the case of free diffusion. We compare our results with recent analytical results that employ a preaveraging approximation and analyze the validity of this approximation. A detailed simulation study of the relevant correlation functions reveals a surprisingly large range where the approximation is applicable.

Abstract:We investigate the hydrodynamic effects on the dynamics of critical concentration fluctuations in multicomponent fluid membranes. Two geometrical cases are considered; (i) confined membrane case and (ii) supported membrane case. We numerically calculate the wavenumber dependence of the effective diffusion coefficient by changing the temperature and/or the thickness of the bulk fluid. For some limiting cases, the result is compared with the previously obtained analytical expression. An analogy of the multicomponent membrane to 2D microemulsion is explored for the confined membrane geometry.

Surface Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Methods for the Drift-Diffusion Dynamics of Particles and Microstructures within Curved Fluid Interfaces

Abstract:We introduce fluctuating hydrodynamics approaches on surfaces for capturing the drift-diffusion dynamics of particles and microstructures immersed within curved fluid interfaces of spherical shape. We take into account the interfacial hydrodynamic coupling, traction coupling with the surrounding bulk fluid, and thermal fluctuations. For fluid-structure interactions, we introduce Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM) and related Stochastic Eulerian-Lagrangian Methods (SELM) for curved surfaces. We use these approaches to investigate the statistics of surface fluctuating hydrodynamics and microstructures. For velocity autocorrelations, we find characteristic power-law scalings $\tau^{-1}$, $\tau^{-2}$, and plateaus can emerge. This depends on the physical regime associated with the geometry, surface viscosity, and bulk viscosity. This differs from the characteristic $\tau^{-3/2}$ scaling for bulk three dimensional fluids. We develop theory explaining these observed power-laws associated with time-scales for dissipation within the fluid interface and coupling to the surrounding fluid. We then use our introduced methods to investigate a few example systems and roles of hydrodynamic coupling and thermal fluctuations including for the kinetics of passive particles and active microswimmers in curved fluid interfaces.

Abstract:Solute-surface interactions have garnered considerable interest in recent years as a novel control mechanism for driving unique fluid dynamics and particle transport with potential applications in fields such as biomedicine, the development of microfluidic devices, and enhanced oil recovery. In this study, we will discuss dispersion induced by the diffusioosmotic motion near a charged wall in the presence of a solute concentration gradient. Here, we introduce a plug of salt with a Gaussian distribution at the center of a channel with no background flow. As the solute diffuses, the concentration gradient drives a diffusioosmotic slip flow at the walls, which results in a recirculating flow in the channel; this, in turn, drives an advective flux of the solute concentration. This effect leads to cross-stream diffusion of the solute, altering the effective diffusivity of the solute as it diffuses along the channel. We derive theoretical predictions for the solute dynamics using a multiple-timescale analysis to quantify the dispersion driven by the solute-surface interactions. Furthermore, we derive a cross-sectionally averaged concentration equation with an effective diffusivity analogous to that from Taylor dispersion. In addition, we use numerical simulations to validate our theoretical predictions.

Global stability analysis of hydrodynamic focusing in the presence of a soluble surfactant

Abstract:We numerically study the influence of a soluble surfactant on the microjetting mode of the liquid–liquid flow focusing configuration. The surfactant adsorbs on the interface next to the feeding capillary and accumulates in front of the emitted jet, significantly lowering the surface tension there. The resulting Marangoni stress substantially alters the balance of the tangential stresses at the interface but does not modify the interface velocity. The global stability analysis at the minimum flow rate stability limit shows that the Marangoni stress collaborates with soluto-capillarity to stabilize the microjetting mode. Our analysis unveils the noticeable effect of the Marangoni stress associated with the surface tension perturbation. Surfactant diffusion and desorption hardly affect the stability limit. Transient numerical simulations show how subcritical and supercritical base flows respond to a spatially localized initial perturbation. Our parametric study indicates that the minimum flow rate ratio depends on the adsorption constant and the surfactant concentration through the product of these two variables. The surfactant stabilizing effect increases with the outer stream flow rate. We show that surfactants not only stabilize the microemulsion resulting from the jet breakup in hydrodynamic focusing, but also allow for the reduction of droplet size. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of the complex role of surfactants in tip streaming via hydrodynamic focusing. In particular, our results contradict the common assumption that adding surfactant favours tip streaming simply because it reduces the meniscus tip surface tension.

Abstract:Most of the literature on flow through nanoporous two-dimensional membranes has focused on static membranes under quasiequilibrium conditions. However, various studies have shown the relevance of fluid-structure interactions—particularly dynamic coupling—on flow through nanopores and nanotubes. A fundamental understanding of the effects of membrane oscillations could provide the missing link to the development of ultraefficient nanofluidic systems for water desalination, gas separation, and other applications. Herein, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the effects of rigid in-plane harmonic pore oscillations on water flow through nanoporous graphene. First, we repurpose a used technique as a framework to avoid injecting arbitrary amounts of heat into the interfacial water, thereby isolating the physical mechanisms caused by the pore's movement. Then we demonstrate that the considered pore oscillations enhance flow by increasing the average axial velocity and decreasing the average density of water inside the pore due to the dynamic opening and closing of flow routes inside the pore. Abstract:In the absence of advection, confined diffusion characterizes transport in many natural and artificial devices, such as ionic channels, zeolites, and nanopores. While extensive theoretical and numerical studies on this subject have produced many important predictions, experimental verifications of the predictions are rare. Here, we experimentally measure colloidal diffusion times in microchannels with periodically varying width and contrast results with predictions from the Fick-Jacobs theory and Brownian dynamics simulation. While the theory and simulation correctly predict the entropic effect of the varying channel width, they fail to account for hydrodynamic effects, which include both an overall decrease and a spatial variation of diffusivity in channels. Neglecting such hydrodynamic effects, the theory and simulation underestimate the mean and standard deviation of first passage times by 40\% in channels with a neck width twice the particle diameter. We further show that the validity of the Fick-Jakobs theory can be restored by reformulating it in terms of the experimentally measured diffusivity. Our work thus demonstrates that hydrodynamic effects play a key role in diffusive transport through narrow channels and should be included in theoretical and numerical models.

Abstract:We study diffusion of colloids on a fluid-fluid interface using particle simulations and fluctuating hydrodynamics. Diffusion on a two-dimensional interface with three-dimensional hydrodynamics is known to be anomalous, with the collective diffusion coefficient diverging like the inverse of the wavenumber. This unusual collective effect arises because of the compressibility of the fluid flow in the plane of the interface, and leads to a nonlinear nonlocal convolution term in the diffusion equation for the ensemble-averaged concentration. We extend the previous hydrodynamic theory to account for a species/color labeling of the particles, as necessary to model experiments based on fluorescent techniques. We study the magnitude and dynamics of density and color density fluctuations using a novel Brownian dynamics algorithm, as well as fluctuating hydrodynamics theory and simulation. We find that hydrodynamic coupling between a single tagged particle and collective density fluctuations leads to a reduction of the long-time self-diffusion coefficient, even for an ideal gas of non-interacting particles. Using linearized fluctuating hydrodynamics theory, we show that for diffusion on a fluid-fluid interface, nonequilibrium fluctuations of the total density are small compared to the equilibrium fluctuations, but fluctuations of color density are giant and exhibit a spectrum that decays as the inverse cubed power of the wavenumber. We confirm these predictions through Brownian dynamics simulations of diffusive mixing with two indistinguishable species. We also examine nonequilibrium fluctuations in systems with two-dimensional hydrodynamics, such as thin smectic films in vacuum. We find that nonequilibrium fluctuations are colossal and comparable in magnitude to the mean, and can be accurately modeled using numerical solvers for the nonlinear equations of fluctuating hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Recent experimental results indicate that mixing is enhanced by a reciprocal flow induced inside a levitated droplet with an oscillatory deformation [T. Watanabe et al. Sci. Rep. 8, 10221 (2018)]. Generally, reciprocal flow cannot convect the solutes in time average, and agitation cannot take place. In the present paper, we focus on the diffusion process coupled with the reciprocal flow. We theoretically derive that the diffusion process can be enhanced by the reciprocal flow, and the results are confirmed via numerical calculation of the over-damped Langevin equation with a reciprocal flow.

Abstract:The diffusion of molecules and clusters under nanoscale confinement or absorbed on surfaces is the key controlling factor in dynamical processes such as transport, chemical reaction, or filtration. Enhancing diffusion could benefit these processes by increasing their transport efficiency. Using a nonlinear Langevin equation with an extensive number of simulations, we find a large enhancement in diffusion through surface oscillation. For helium confined in a narrow carbon nanotube, the diffusion enhancement is estimated to be over three orders of magnitude. A synchronization mechanism between the kinetics of the particles and the oscillating surface is revealed. Interestingly, a highly nonlinear negative correlation between diffusion coefficient and temperature is predicted based on this mechanism, and further validated by simulations. Our results provide a general and efficient method for enhancing diffusion, especially at low temperatures.
Diffusing proteins on a fluctuating membrane: Analytical theory and simulations

Abstract:Using analytical calculations and computer simulations we consider both the lateral diffusion of a membrane protein and the fluctuation spectrum of the membrane in which the protein is embedded. The membrane protein interacts with the membrane shape through its spontaneous curvature and bending rigidity. The lateral motion of the protein may be viewed as diffusion in an effective potential, hence, the effective mobility is always reduced compared to the case of free diffusion. Using a rigorous path-integral approach we derive an analytical expression for the effective diffusion coefficient for small ratios of temperature and bending rigidity, which is the biologically relevant limit. Simulations show very good quantitative agreement with our analytical result. The analysis of the correlation functions contributing to the diffusion coefficient shows that the correlations between the stochastic force of the protein and the response in the membrane shape are responsible for the reduction. Our quantitative analysis of the membrane height correlation spectrum shows an influence of the protein-membrane interaction causing a distinctly altered wave-vector dependence compared to a free membrane. Furthermore, the time correlations exhibit the two relevant timescales of the system: that of membrane fluctuations and that of lateral protein diffusion with the latter typically much longer than the former. We argue that the analysis of the long-time decay of membrane height correlations can thus provide a new means to determine the effective diffusion coefficient of proteins in the membrane.

Abstract:This work describes a new mechanism for the emergence of oscillatory dynamics driven by the interaction of hydrodynamic flows and reaction-diffusion processes with no autocatalytic feedback nor prescribed hydrodynamic instability involved. To do so, we study the dynamics of an A+ B → C reaction-diffusion front in the presence of chemically-driven Marangoni flows for arbitrary initial concentrations of reactants and diffusion coefficients of all species. All the species are assumed to affect the solution surface tension thereby inducing Marangoni flows at the air-liquid interface. The system dynamics is studied by numerically integrating the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled to reaction-diffusion-convection equations for the three chemical species. We report spatial and temporal oscillations of surface tension triggered by differential diffusion effects of surfactant species coupled to the chemically-induced Marangoni effect. Such oscillations are related to the discontinuous traveling of the front along the surface leading to the progressive formation of local extrema in the surface tension profiles as time evolves.

Convection rolls and three-dimensional particle dynamics in merging solute streams

Abstract:Microparticles migrate in response to gradients in solute concentration through diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis. Merging streams of fluid with distinct solute concentrations is a common strategy for producing a steady concentration gradient with continuous flow in microfluidic devices; the solute concentration gradient and consequent diffusiophoresis are primarily normal to the background flow. This is particularly useful in separation and filtration processes, as it results in regions of particle accrual and depletion in continuous flows. Such systems have been examined in several classic papers on diffusiophoresis, with a focus on the particle dynamics far from boundaries. We show, through experiments, simulations, and theory, that diffusioosmotic flow along certain boundaries can result in significant changes in particle dynamics and particle focusing in near-wall regions. The nonzero velocity at charged surfaces draws solute and particles along the boundary until the flow ultimately recirculates. These "convection rolls," which result in the spanwise migration of polystyrene particles close to boundaries, are apparent near a glass surface but vanish when the surface is coated with gold. The three-dimensional nature of the dynamics could have implications for the design of microfluidic devices: Channel materials can be selected to enhance or suppress near-wall flows. Additionally, we demonstrate the importance of considering solute concentration-dependent models for diffusiophoretic and diffusioosmotic mobility in capturing the dynamics of particles, particularly in regions of low solute concentration.

Abstract:Although continuum theories have been proven quite robust to describe confined fluid flow at molecular length scales, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal mechanistic insights into the interfacial dissipation processes. Most MD simulations of confined fluids have used setups in which the lateral box size is not much larger than the gap height, thus breaking thin-film assumptions usually employed in continuum simulations. Here we explicitly probe the long-wavelength hydrodynamic correlations in confined simple fluids with MD and compare to gap-averaged continuum theories as typically applied in, e.g., lubrication. Relaxation times obtained from equilibrium fluctuations interpolate between the theoretical limits from bulk hydrodynamics and continuum formulations with increasing wavelength. We show how to exploit this characteristic transition to measure viscosity and slip length in confined systems simultaneously from equilibrium MD simulations. Moreover, the gap-averaged theory describes a geometry-induced dispersion relation that leads to overdamped sound relaxation at large wavelengths, which is confirmed by our MD simulations.
