Abstract:In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space M-3 of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure ((C)over-bar, (2, 3, infinity)).We prove two results: The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves; The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The fibers of this map are characterized completely. The first result is a moduli space analogue of the first author's dynamical regularity theorem [37]. The second result confirms a conjecture of Tan Lei. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:We prove that any group of cardinality at most the one of $\mathbb{C}$ is a quotient of any Cremona group of rank at least $4$. This provides a definitive answer to the question of what the quotients of Cremona groups can be. As a consequence, this gives a negative answer to the question of I. Dolgachev of whether Cremona groups of all ranks are generated by involutions. As another application, we show that higher Cremona groups do not enjoy some classical group-theoretic properties (namely, the Hopfian property) which are satisfied by Cremona groups of rank $2$. Finally, we discover that the $3$-torsion of the Cremona group of rank at least $4$ is not countable. To deduce these properties of higher Cremona groups, we first describe the group of birational transformations of a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface $S$ over a perfect field, proving in particular that if $S$ contains a point of degree $6$, then its group of birational self-maps is not generated by elements of finite order as it admits a surjective group homomorphism to~$\mathbb{Z}$. We then use this result to study Mori fibre spaces over the field of complex numbers, for which the generic fibre is a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface.

Abstract:New historical aspects of the classification, by Cayley and Cremona, of ruled quartic surfaces and the relation to string models and plaster models are presented. In a `modern' treatment of the classification of ruled quartic surfaces the classical one is corrected and completed. A conceptual proof is presented of a result of Rohn concerning curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$. The string models of Series XIII (of some ruled quartic surfaces) are based on Rohn's result.

In addition, we provide concise combinatorial description of the possible configurations of simple singularities: they essentially correspond to subgraphs of a certain graph.

Abstract:For we classify the -degenerate smooth CR maps of the three-dimensional unit sphere into the -dimensional unit sphere. Each of these maps has image being contained in a five-dimensional complex-linear space and is of degree at most two, or equivalent to one of the four maps into the five-dimensional sphere classified by Faran. As a byproduct of our classification we obtain new examples of rational maps of degree three which are -degenerate only along a proper real subvariety and are not equivalent to polynomial maps. In particular, by changing the base point, it is possible to construct new families of nondegenerate maps.

Abstract:We develop a framework that allows one to describe the birational geometry of Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$. After establishing some general results for Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$ with mild singularities, we focus on the special case when $X=\mathbb{P}^3$ and $D\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ is a quartic surface. We investigate how the appearance of increasingly worse singularities on $D$ enriches the birational geometry of the pair $(\mathbb{P}^3, D)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of determining which automorphisms of a smooth quartic surface $S \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ are induced by a Cremona transformation of $\mathbb{P}^3$. We provide the first steps towards a complete solution of this problem when $\rho(S)=2$. In particular, we give several examples of quartics whose automorphism groups are generated by involutions, but no non-trivial automorphism is induced by a Cremona transformation of $\mathbb{P}^3$, giving a negative answer for Oguiso's question of whether every automorphism of finite order of a smooth quartic surface $S\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ is induced by a Cremona transformation.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on C 4 preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the Kahan--Hirota--Kimura discretisation of the Euler top, we characterise the growth and integrability properties of a collection of elements in the Cremona group of a complex projective 3-space using techniques from algebraic geometry. This collection consists of maps obtained by composing the standard Cremona transformation $\mathrm{c}_3\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^3)$ with projectivities that permute the fixed points of $\mathrm{c}_3$ and the points over which $\mathrm{c}_3$ performs a divisorial contraction. More specifically, we show that three behaviour are possible: (A) integrable with quadratic degree growth and two invariants, (B) periodic with two-periodic degree sequences and more than two invariants, and (C) non-integrable with submaximal degree growth and one invariant.

Abstract:We study irreducible surfaces of degree d in $\mathbb{P}^3$ that contain a line of multiplicity d-1 (monoidal surfaces) or d-2 (submonoidal surfaces). We relate them to congruences of lines and Cremona transformations. Many of our results are not new and can be found in the classical literature, we give them modern proofs. In the last section, we extend some of our results to hypersurfaces of arbitrary dimension. We define two commuting Cremona involutions in the ambient space associated to a linear subspace of multiplicity d-2 contained in the hypersurface. Both leave the hypersurface invariant, but one acts as the identity on the hypersurface.

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.
