Abstract:We classify meromorphic affine connections on compact complex surfaces with algebraic dimension one, extending the work of Inoue,Kobayashi and Ochiai (1981) in the holomorphic case. The motivation is to investigate possible extension of the principle of uniformization of complex compact curves by means of geometric structures, in higher dimensions and allowing singularities to the geometric structures.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the classification of meromorphic affine connections on complex compact surfaces. Specifically, the author studies whether there exist meromorphic affine connections on a complex compact surface \(M\) with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\), and tries to classify these surfaces. A meromorphic affine connection is a geometric structure that allows poles at certain points, which enables the research scope to cover more complex compact surfaces. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Existence of meromorphic affine connections**: - The author proves that any meromorphic affine complex compact surface with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\) is an isomorphic elliptic surface. - Through a finite covering, the minimal meromorphic affine complex compact surface is a principal elliptic fiber bundle. 2. **Simplification of the classification problem**: - The author simplifies the problem to the classification of principal elliptic fiber bundles and their quotient spaces. - Specifically, when the base curve is the projective line \(P^1\) or an elliptic curve, these problems are completely solved. 3. **The case of high - genus curves**: - For the case where the hyperelliptic curve is the base curve, a subset of codimension 3 in the meromorphic affine connection space is described, and it is proved that no new examples come from the quotient spaces of such principal elliptic fiber bundles. ### Main theorems - **Theorem 1.1**: - Any complex compact surface with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\) and equipped with a meromorphic affine connection also admits a flat affine holomorphic connection. - For example, any K3 surface with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\) cannot be equipped with a meromorphic affine connection. ### Paper structure 1. **Introduction**: - Briefly describes the historical background and importance of the classification problem of complex compact manifolds. - Introduces the concept of meromorphic affine connection and explains the significance of studying such connections. 2. **Meromorphic affine connection and minimality**: - Defines meromorphic connections and linearizations and discusses their properties. - Proves the pull - back property of meromorphic affine connections on the minimal model. 3. **Reduction to the classification of principal elliptic surfaces**: - Proves that a meromorphic affine complex compact surface with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\) is an isomorphic elliptic surface. - Reduces the problem to the classification of principal elliptic fiber bundles and their quotient spaces. 4. **Classification of principal elliptic surfaces**: - Discusses the cases where the base curve is the projective line \(P^1\) and an elliptic curve respectively, and gives detailed classification results. 5. **The case of high - genus curves**: - Describes a subset of codimension 3 in the meromorphic affine connection space and proves that no new examples come from the quotient spaces of such principal elliptic fiber bundles. ### Conclusion Through the study of meromorphic affine connections on complex compact surfaces, the paper not only provides a profound understanding of the existence of such geometric structures, but also lays the foundation for further research in the future. In particular, for complex compact surfaces with algebraic dimension \(a(M) = 1\), the paper gives relatively complete classification results.
