Abstract:We classify meromorphic affine connections on compact complex surfaces with algebraic dimension one, extending the work of Inoue,Kobayashi and Ochiai (1981) in the holomorphic case. The motivation is to investigate possible extension of the principle of uniformization of complex compact curves by means of geometric structures, in higher dimensions and allowing singularities to the geometric structures.

Abstract:We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.

Abstract:The complex projective structures considered is this article are compact curves locally modeled on $\mathbb{CP}^1$. To such a geometric object, modulo marked isomorphism, the monodromy map associates an algebraic one: a representation of its fundamental group into $\operatorname{PGL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, modulo conjugacy. This correspondence is neither surjective nor injective. Nonetheless, it is a local diffeomorphism [Hejhal, 1975]. We generalize this theorem to projective structures admitting poles (without apparent singularity and with fixed residues): the corresponding monodromy map (including Stokes data) is a local biholomorphism.

Abstract:We prove Malgrange's conjecture on the absence of confluence phenomena for integrable meromorphic connections. More precisely, if $ Y\to X$ is a complex-analytic fibration by smooth curves, $Z$ a hypersurface of $Y$ finite over $X$, and $\nabla$ an integrable meromorphic connection on $Y$ with poles along $Z$, then the function which attaches to {\smit x} $\in X$ the sum of the irregularities of the fiber $\nabla_{(x)}$ at the points of $Z_x$ is lower semicontinuous. The proof relies upon a study of the formal structure of integrable meromorphic connections in several variables.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer m we show that any closed, oriented topological four-manifold with fundamental group Z_{4m+2} and odd intersection form, with possibly seven exceptions, either admits no smooth structure or admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures up to diffeomorphism. Moreover, we construct infinite families of non-complex irreducible fake projective planes with diverse fundamental groups.

A Note On Projective Structures On Compact Surfaces

Abstract:Projective structures on topological surfaces support the structure of 2d CFTs with a degree of technical simplification. We propose a complex analytic space $\mathcal{P}_g$ biholomorphic to $T^*_{(1,0)} \mathcal{M}_g$ as a candidate moduli space of the projective structures of the genus $g$ topological surface. Explicit analysis at $g=1$, including of the fibers over the fictitious orbifold loci of $\mathcal{M}_{g=1}$ and of transformations under the modular group, supports this proposal. It also shows that $\mathcal{P}_{g=1}$ naturally resolves the orbifold locus of the affine structure moduli space $\mathcal{A}_{g=1}$ which is related to the Hodge bundle over $\mathcal{M}_{g=1}$. For $g \geq 2$, intricate quotient operations are expected along fibers over the orbifold loci of $\mathcal{M}_g$, whose analysis we leave to future work. Physically, the space $\mathcal{P}_g$ represents the bundle of universal, stationary, chiral hydrodynamic flows spatially confined to compact genus-$g$ Riemann surfaces.

On the symplectic structure over the moduli space of projective structures on a surface

Abstract:The moduli space of projective structures on a compact oriented surface $\Sigma$ has a holomorphic symplectic structure, which is constructed by pulling back, using the monodromy map, the Atiyah--Bott--Goldman symplectic form on the character variety ${\rm Hom}(\pi_1(\Sigma), \text{PSL}(2, {\mathbb C}))/\!\!/\text{PSL}(2, {\mathbb C})$. We produce another construction of this symplectic form. This construction shows that the symplectic form on the moduli space is actually algebraic. Note that the monodromy map is only holomorphic and not algebraic, so the first construction does not give algebraicity of the pulled back form.

Abstract:In 2018, Vladimir Fock and the author introduced a geometric structure on surfaces, called higher complex structure, whose moduli space shares several properties with Hitchin's component. In this paper, we establish various links between flat connections and higher complex structures. In particular, we study a certain class of connections on a bundle equipped with a line subbundle $L$, which we call $L$-parabolic. The curvature of these connections is of rank 1. A certain family of $L$-parabolic connections is parametrized by the data of a higher complex structure and a cotangent variation. The family of connections being flat implies the compatibility condition of the cotangent variation. Higher diffeomorphisms are realized by the gauge transformation induced by changing $L$. Constructing flat families of connections of this kind is linked to Toda integrable systems.

Abstract:A meromorphic quadratic differential on a compact Riemann surface defines a complex projective structure away from the poles via the Schwarzian equation. In this article we first prove the analogue of Thurston's Grafting Theorem for the space of such structures with signings at regular singularities. This extends previous work of Gupta-Mj which only considered irregular singularities. We also define a framed monodromy map from the signed space extending work of Allegretti-Bridgeland, and we characterize the PSL(2,C)-representations that arise as holonomy, generalizing results of Gupta-Mj and Faraco-Gupta. As an application of our Grafting Theorem, we also show that the monodromy map to the moduli space of framed representations (as introduced by Fock-Goncharov) is a local biholomorphism, proving a conjectured analogue of a result of Hejhal.

Flat structure of meromorphic connections on Riemann surfaces

Abstract:The possible omega limit sets of simple geodesics for meromorphic connections on compact Riemann surfaces have been studied by Abate, Tovena and Bianchi. In this paper, we study the same problem for infinite self-intersecting geodesics. In the first part of the paper we study relation among meromorphic $k$-differentials, singular flat metrics and meromorphic connections. Moreover, we prove a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem for infinite self-intersecting geodesics of meromorphic connections with monodromy in $G$, where $\arg G^k=\{0\}$ for some $k\in\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:We Introduce the notion of chord diagrams on arbitrary compact (possibly punctured) oriented surfaces. In the case of the 2-spheres these are just the usual chord diagrams used in test study of Vassiliev invariants of links. We consider the algebra of chord diagrams on a surface and prove that this algebra has a natural Poisson structure. Suppose now that G is a Lie group with an invariant bilinear form on g = Lie(G). We can associate to each chord diagram (coloured by representations of G) a function on the moduli space of flat G-connections on the surface. Our main result states that this map is a Poisson algebra homomorphism. Moreover, for most classical groups we prove that any algebraic function on moduli space can be obtained this way and we conjecture that this holds for all simple groups. In this way we obtain a universal description of the Poisson algebra of the moduli space, decoupling the Lie group in question.

Abstract:This paper review one construction of Frobenius manifolds (and slightly weaker structures). It splits it into several steps and discusses the freedom and the constraints in these steps. The steps pass through holomorphic bundles with meromorphic connections. A conjecture on existence and uniqueness of certain such bundles, a proof of the conjecture in the 2-dimensional cases, and some other new results form a research part of this paper.

Abstract:Expanding on my former work along with the more recent work of Kasuya and Takase, we demonstrate that for a given link $L \subset M$ which is null-homologous in $H_1(M)$ and for any smooth oriented 2-plane field $\eta$ over $L$ there exists a smooth embedding $F:M \hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}^3$ so that the set of complex tangents to the embedding is exactly $L$ and at each $x \in L$ the holomorphic tangent space is exactly $\eta_x$. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the "analyticity" of a complex tangent, as given by the Bishop invariant, may be determined exactly from the angle formed between the holomorphic complex line and the the curve of complex tangents.

Abstract:The unfolding of singular points of linear differential equations is a classical technique to study the properties of irregular singular points from those of regular singular points. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the unfolding of unramified irregular singularities of meromorphic $G$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. As one of main results, we give a description for the unfolding of singularities of connections as the deformation of moduli spaces of them, and show that every moduli space of irreducible meromorphic $G$-connections with unramified irregular singularities on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ has a deformation to a moduli space of irreducible Fuchsian $G$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. Furthermore, we can consider the unfolding of additive Delinge-Simpson problems, namely, the unfolding of irregular singularities generates a family of additive Deligne-Simpson problems. Then as an application of our main result, we show that a Deligne-Simpson problem for $G$-connections with unramified irregular singularities has a solution if and only if every other unfolded Deligne-Simpson problem simultaneously has a solution. Also we give a combinatorial and diagrammatic description of the unfolding of irregular singularities via spectral types and unfolding diagrams, and then consider a conjecture proposed by Oshima which asks the existence of irreducible $G$-connections realizing the given spectral types and their unfolding. Our main result gives an affirmative answer of this conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the structure theorem for smooth projective varieties with nef tangent bundle to projective klt varieties whose tangent sheaf is either positively curved or almost nef. Specifically, we show that such a variety $X$, up to a finite quasi-étale cover, admits a rationally connected fibration $X \to A$ onto an abelian variety $A$. For the proof, we develop the theory of positivity of coherent sheaves on projective varieties. As applications, we establish some relations between the geometric properties and positivity of tangent sheaves.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we confirm a few basic criteria of the finiteness of real forms of a given smooth complex projective variety, in terms of the Galois cohomology set of the discrete part of the automorphism group, the cone conjecture and the topological entropy. We then apply them to show that a smooth complex projective surface has at most finitely many non-isomorphic real forms unless it is either rational or a non-minimal surface birational to either a K3 surface or an Enriques surface. In the second part of the paper, we construct an Enriques surface whose blow-up at one point admits infinitely many non-isomorphic real forms. This answers a question of Kondo to us and also shows the three exceptional cases really occur.

Abstract:Extending the Labourie-Loftin correspondence, we establish, on any punctured oriented surface of finite type, a one-to-one correspondence between convex projective structures with specific types of ends and punctured Riemann surface structures endowed with meromorphic cubic differentials whose poles are at the punctures. This generalizes previous results of Loftin, Benoist-Hulin and Dumas-Wolf.

Abstract:In this note we propose the generalization of the notion of a holomorphic contact structure on a manifold (smooth variety) to varieties with rational singularities and prove basic properties of such objects. Natural examples of singular contact varieties come from the theory of nilpotent orbits: every projectivization of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a semisimple Lie algebra satisfies our definition after normalization. We show the correspondence between symplectic varieties with the structure of a $\mathbb{C}^*$-bundle and the contact ones along with the existence of the stratification à la Kaledin. In the projective case we demonstrate the equivalence between crepant and contact resolutions of singularities, show the uniruledness and give a full classification of projective contact varieties in dimension 3.
