Abstract:Interactions between grain boundaries and domain walls were extensively studied in ferroelectric films and bicrystals. This knowledge, however, has not been transferred to polycrystalline ceramics, in which the grain size represents a powerful tool to tailor the dielectric and electromechanical response. Here, we relate changes in dielectric and electromechanical properties of a bulk polycrystalline Pb(Zr0.7Ti0.3)O3 to domain wall interactions with grain boundaries. Samples with grain sizes in the range of 3.9 - 10.4 micrometers were prepared and their microstructure, crystal structure, and dielectric/electromechanical properties were investigated. A decreasing grain size was accompanied by a reduction in large-signal electromechanical properties and an increase in small-signal dielectric permittivity. High-energy diffraction analysis revealed increasing microstrains upon decreasing the grain size, while piezoresponse force microscopy indicated an increased local coercive voltage near grain boundaries. The changes in properties were thus related to strained material volume close to the grain boundaries exhibiting reduced domain wall dynamics.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the influence of the interaction between grain boundaries and domain walls on the dielectric and electromechanical properties of polycrystalline Pb(Zr0.7Ti0.3)O3 (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic materials. Specifically, the researchers focused on the influence of different grain sizes (in the range of 3.9 - 10.4 µm) on the microstructure, crystal structure, and dielectric/electromechanical properties of PZT ceramic materials. Through experiments, they hope to understand how the reduction in grain size affects domain - wall dynamics and ultimately affects the properties of the material.
### Main research questions:
1. **Interaction between grain boundaries and domain walls**: Study how the interaction between grain boundaries and domain walls affects the properties of PZT ceramics.
2. **Effect of grain size**: Explore the specific influence of different grain sizes on the dielectric and electromechanical properties of PZT ceramics.
3. **Relationship between microstructure and properties**: Analyze how the microstructure changes (such as micro - strain) caused by the change in grain size affect the dynamic behavior of domain walls, and further affect the macroscopic properties of the material.
### Research background:
- **Wide application of ferroelectric ceramics**: Ferroelectric ceramics have important applications in electronic devices, actuators, high - dielectric - constant capacitors, piezoelectric sensors, and ultrasonic transducers.
- **Importance of microstructure parameters**: Microstructure parameters such as lattice structure, crystallinity, lattice distortion, and porosity have a significant impact on the electrical and electromechanical properties of ferroelectric ceramics.
- **Grain size engineering**: Grain size is one of the important tools for regulating the properties of ferroelectric ceramics, but the specific mechanism is not yet fully understood.
### Research methods:
- **Sample preparation**: PZT ceramic samples with different grain sizes were prepared by the mixed - oxide method.
- **Characterization techniques**: Techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), synchrotron radiation X - ray diffraction (XRD), impedance spectroscopy, and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) were used to characterize the samples.
- **Performance testing**: Performance indicators such as dielectric constant, loss factor, polarization, and strain hysteresis loops of the samples were measured.
### Key findings:
- **Influence of decreasing grain size**:
- The dielectric constant increases at room temperature but decreases near the Curie temperature.
- The large - signal electromechanical properties (such as bipolar strain and negative strain) decrease as the grain size decreases.
- The micro - strain increases as the grain size decreases, resulting in weakened domain - wall dynamics.
- **Local domain - wall dynamics**: Through PFM measurement, it was found that there is a higher domain - wall density and a higher local coercive voltage in the area near the grain boundary, indicating that the domain - wall movement in these areas is restricted.
### Conclusion:
Through systematic research, the paper reveals the significant influence of grain size on the properties of PZT ceramic materials, especially the restrictive effect of the interaction between grain boundaries and domain walls on domain - wall dynamics. These findings are helpful for better understanding the relationship between the microstructure and properties of polycrystalline ferroelectric ceramics and provide a theoretical basis for optimizing material properties.
