Abstract:Pumps-as-Turbines (PATs) are increasingly used in micro-hydropower applications due to their cost competitiveness that is brought about by lower acquisition, design, operation, and maintenance costs. Despite these, limited research exists that investigates PAT failures. Notably, there is a literature gap concerning cavitation in PATs. As such, this study proposes an improvement to the deviation from the normal distribution (DND) technique to facilitate application in PAT cavitation detection. Probability density functions of vibration signals collected during operation at design speed and various cavitation states are developed and the DND computed using two approaches, i.e., the use of baseline data and the original method, for comparison purposes. Normal probability plots are presented to depict suitability of the two approaches in quantifying the DND. Results show higher deviation when using baseline data, hence, improved detection capabilities with amplification of the slope of the trend line under cavitating conditions when using the proposed DND approach. The proposed method also allows for establishing clear alarm limits for the condition monitoring of PATs in practice. Moreover, the proposed method is validated by application at various PAT operating speeds and cavitation states. The proposed method is found to be responsive, reliable, and independent from operating speed.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to detect cavitation in Centrifugal Pumps - as - Turbines (PATs). Specifically, the research aims to propose a method based on time - domain vibration signal analysis to improve the existing Deviation from Normal Distribution (DND) technique, so as to enhance the detection ability of cavitation in PATs. By comparing the DND calculated using baseline data and the original method, the paper shows the superior performance of the baseline data method in detecting cavitation and proposes a method for establishing clear alarm limits in practical applications.
### Background of the Paper
- **Pumps - as - Turbines (PATs)**: PATs are widely used in micro - hydro - power generation systems, including water supply networks, river hydro - power schemes, irrigation and other existing water infrastructures, because of their cost competitiveness. The cost advantages of PATs are mainly reflected in lower manufacturing, design, operation and maintenance costs.
- **Cavitation Phenomenon**: Although PATs have cost advantages, there are relatively few studies on PATs failures, especially on cavitation. Cavitation refers to the phase change of the fluid when it passes through the impeller passage, from liquid to gas, and then the bubble collapse in the downstream high - pressure area, resulting in performance degradation, severe vibration, noise and component damage.
### Research Objectives
- **Improve DND Technique**: Propose an improved DND technique to detect cavitation in PATs by calculating the deviation between the actual Probability Density Function (PDF) under different operating conditions and the normal PDF of the baseline data.
- **Verify the Effectiveness of the Method**: Verify its responsiveness, reliability and independence from operating speed characteristics by applying this method under different operating speeds and cavitation states.
### Method Overview
1. **Experimental Setup**:
- Use the KSB ETN 050 - 32 - 200 centrifugal pump as a turbine to drive a 5.5 kW ABB induction motor as a generator.
- Connect to the power grid through a 5.5 kW Mitsubishi Electric FR - A741 - 5.5K regenerative frequency converter (VSD) to provide load.
- The water flow is provided by a 2 m³ water tank through a 9.2 kW Ebara 3D 50 - 200 centrifugal pump, and the flow rate is adjusted by a manual control valve.
2. **Data Acquisition**:
- Use a PCB ICP - type accelerometer with a sensitivity of 100±10% mV/g to measure vibration signals.
- Three single - axis accelerometers are installed in mutually perpendicular directions on the bearing housing at the PAT drive end, and a three - axis accelerometer is pasted on the PAT outlet flange.
- The data are collected by a 16 - bit NI 6210 analog - to - digital data acquisition system and stored on a personal computer for further analysis.
3. **Experimental Procedure**:
- First, start the supply pump to make the PAT rotate freely, and then gradually reduce the flow rate to connect the load.
- Set the VSD to make the generator speed reach 1,500 rpm and allow the system to synchronize.
- Adjust the flow rate to the nominal condition and collect baseline data.
- Gradually adjust the flow rate to eight other operating conditions and record the vibration data, flow rate and pressure measurements under each condition.
### Results and Discussion
- **Probability Density Function**: By calculating the PDF under different operating conditions, the differences in vibration signals when the machine state changes are shown.
- **DND Calculation**: Calculate the DND using the baseline data and the original method respectively. The results show that the baseline data method has a higher deviation under cavitation conditions, thus improving the detection ability.
- **Alarm Limits**: Propose a method based on DND to establish clear alarm limits for condition monitoring in practical applications.
### Conclusion
The DND technique based on time - domain vibration signal analysis proposed in this study performs well in detecting cavitation in PATs, can effectively identify the cavitation state, and provides a reliable monitoring means for practical applications.
