Abstract:The ring of projective invariants of eight ordered points on the line is a quotient of the polynomial ring on V, where V is a fourteen-dimensional representation of S_8, by an ideal I_8, so the modular fivefold (P^1)^8 // GL(2) is Proj(Sym* (V)/I_8). We show that there is a unique cubic hypersurface S in PV whose equation s is skew-invariant, and that the singular locus of S is the modular fivefold. In particular, over Z[1/3], the modular fivefold is cut out by the 14 partial derivatives of s. Better: these equations generate I_8. In characteristic 3, the cubic s is needed to generate the ideal. The existence of such a cubic was predicted by Dolgachev. Over Q, we recover the 14 quadrics found by computer calculation by Koike, and our approach yields a conceptual representation-theoretic description of the presentation. Additionally we find the graded Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution in any characteristic. The proof over Q is by pure thought, using Lie theory and commutative algebra. Over Z, the assistance of a computer was necessary. This result will be used as the base case describing the equations of the moduli space of an arbitrary number of points on P^1, with arbitrary weighting, in a later paper, completing the program of our previous paper (Duke Math. J.). The modular fivefold, and corresponding ring, are known to have a number of special incarnations, due to Deligne-Mostow, Kondo, and Freitag-Salvati Manni, for example as ball quotients or ring of modular forms respectively.

Abstract:In this note, we introduce a new approach to abstract ``synthetic'' projective lines. We discuss various aspects of our approach, and compare these aspects with the classical one. A number of intriguing questions arise. Amongst these aspects, we discuss geometric closures, and introduce automorphism-blocking sets. We also construct a number of (counter) examples in infinite cases.

Abstract:We introduce a concept of the operator (non-commutative) projective line PH defined by a Hilbert space H and a symplectic structure on it. Points of PH are Lagrangian subspaces of H. If a particular Lagrangian subspace is fixed then we can define SL(2,R)-action on PH. This gives a consistent framework for linear fractional transformations of operators. Some connections with spectral theory are outline as well.

Abstract:We give examples of Koszul rings that arise naturally in algebraic geometry. In the first part, we prove a general result on Koszul property associated to an ample line bundle on a projective variety. Specifically, we show how Koszul property of multiples of a base point free ample line bundle depends on its Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. In the second part, we give examples of Koszul rings that come from adjoint line bundles on irregular surfaces of general type.

Abstract:The complex projective structures considered is this article are compact curves locally modeled on $\mathbb{CP}^1$. To such a geometric object, modulo marked isomorphism, the monodromy map associates an algebraic one: a representation of its fundamental group into $\operatorname{PGL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, modulo conjugacy. This correspondence is neither surjective nor injective. Nonetheless, it is a local diffeomorphism [Hejhal, 1975]. We generalize this theorem to projective structures admitting poles (without apparent singularity and with fixed residues): the corresponding monodromy map (including Stokes data) is a local biholomorphism.

Projective Rectangles: The Graph of Lines

Abstract:A projective rectangle is like a projective plane that may have different lengths in two directions. We develop properties of the graph of lines, in which adjacency means having a common point, especially its strong regularity and clique structure. The main construction of projective rectangles, stated in a previous paper, gives rectangles whose graph of lines is a known strongly regular bilinear forms graph. That fact leads to a proof that the main construction does produce projective rectangles, and also gives a new representation of bilinear forms graphs. We conclude by mentioning a few simple graph properties, such as the chromatic number, which is not known, and a partial geometry obtained from the graph.

Linear relations over commutative rings

Abstract:We consider the category of linear relations over an arbitrary commutative ring, and identify it as a subcategory of the category of Kronecker representations. We observe that this subcategory forms a definable torsion-free class in a canonical torsion pair whose torsion class consists of representations supported only at the tail vertex. In the complete local case we also generalise results used in the functorial filtrations method, known before only in case the ground ring is a field. In particular, our results strictly generalise what is usually called the `splitting lemma' linear relations. Our generalisation of a `covering lemma' involves the notion of a linearly compact module in the sense introduced by Zelinski.

Abstract:Let R be a ring, Proj be the class of all the projective right R -modules, be the full subcategory of the homotopy category K (Proj) whose class of objects consists of all the totally acyclic complexes, and be the class of all the morphisms in K (Proj) whose cones belong to . We prove that if K (Proj) has enough -injective objects, then the Verdier quotient has small Hom-sets, and this last condition implies the existence of Gorenstein-projective precovers in Mod- R and of totally acyclic precovers in C (Mod- R ).

Abstract:Abstract The string group acts on the category of coherent sheaves over a weighted projective line by degree-shift actions. We study the equivariant relations induced by degree-shift actions between weighted projective lines. We prove that such an equivariant relation is characterized by an admissible homomorphism between the associated string groups. We classify all these equivariant relations for the weighted projective lines of domestic and tubular types, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of determining the Hilbert function of schemes X of the proiective space P^n which are the generic union of s lines and one m-multiple point. We completely solve this problem for any s and m when n > 3. When n=3 we find several defective such schemes and conjecture that they are the only ones. We verify this conjecture in several cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a general setup for studying incidence-preserving motions of projective geometric configurations of points and lines via a "projective rigidity matrix". The spaces of infinitesimal motions of a point-line configuration and dependencies amongst the point-line incidences can be interpreted as the kernel and co-kernel of this projective rigidity matrix, respectively. We also introduce a symmetry-adapted projective rigidity matrix for analysing symmetric configurations and their symmetry-preserving motions. The symmetry may be a point group or a more general symmetry, such as an autopolarity.

Abstract:Assume that $R$ is a non-right perfect ring. Then there is a proper class of classes of (right $R$-) modules closed under transfinite extensions lying between the classes $\mathcal P _0$ of projective modules, and $\mathcal F _0$ of flat modules. These classes can be defined as variants of the class $\mathcal F \mathcal M$ of absolute flat Mittag-Leffler modules: either as their restricted versions (lying between $\mathcal P _0$ and $\mathcal F \mathcal M$), or their relative versions (between $\mathcal F \mathcal M$ and $\mathcal F _0$). In this survey, we will deal with applications of these classes in relative homological algebra and algebraic geometry. The classes $\mathcal P _0$ and $\mathcal F _0$ are known to provide for approximations, and minimal approximations, respectively. We will show that the classes of restricted flat relative Mittag-Leffler modules, and flat relative Mittag-Leffler modules, have rather different approximation properties: the former classes always provide for approximations, but the latter do not, except for the boundary case of $\mathcal F _0$. The notion of an (infinite dimensional) vector bundle is known to be Zariski local for all schemes, the key point of the proof being that projectivity ascends and descends along flat and faithfully flat ring homomorphisms, respectively. We will see that the same holds for the properties of being a $\kappa$-restricted flat Mittag-Leffler module for each cardinal $\kappa \geq \aleph_0$, and also a flat $\mathcal Q$-Mittag-Leffler module whenever $\mathcal Q$ is a definable class of finite type. Thus, as in the model case of vector bundles, Zariski locality holds for flat quasi-coherent sheaves induced by each of these classes of modules. Moreover, we will see that the notion of a locally $n$-tilting quasi-coherent sheaf is Zariski local for all $n \geq 0$.

Functional Analysis and Its Applications

Abstract:We define a Grothendieck ring of pairs of complex quasi-projective varieties (consisting of a variety and a subvariety). We describe -structures on this ring and a power structure over it. We show that the conjectual symmetric power of the projective line with several orbifold points described by A. Fonarev is consistent with the symmetric power of this line with the set of distinguished points as a pair of varieties.

On projective spaces over local fields

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{P}$ be the set of points of a finite-dimensional projective space over a local field $F$, endowed with the topology $\tau$ naturally induced from the canonical topology of $F$. Intuitively, continuous incidence abelian group structures on $\mathcal{P}$ are abelian group structures on $\mathcal{P}$ preserving both the topology $\tau$ and the incidence of lines with points. We show that the real projective line is the only finite-dimensional projective space over an Archimedean local field which admits a continuous incidence abelian group structure. The latter is unique up to isomorphism of topological groups. In contrast, in the non-Archimedean case we construct continuous incidence abelian group structures in any dimension $n \in \mathbb{N}$. We show that if $n>1$ and the characteristic of $F$ does not divide $n+1$, then there are finitely many possibilities up to topological isomorphism and, in any case, countably many.

Abstract:This is a survey article on Richardson varieties and their combinatorics. A Richardson variety is the intersection, inside the flag manifold GL_n/B_+, of a Schubert cell (B_- u B_+)/B_+ and an opposite Schubert cell (B_+ w B_+)/B_+ (or the similar intersection of Schubert varieties). In this survey, we provide an overview of what is known about (1) homogeneous coordinate rings of Richardson varieties, their bases and degenerations (2) parametrizations of Richardson varieties using Bott-Samelson varieties (3) Deodhar's decompositions of the flag manifold and of Richardson varieties within it and (4) total positivity in the flag manifold. We also provide an overview of the combinatorics of positroid varieties, their relations to Richardson varieties, and how they are parametrized using plabic graphs. Most of this survey is an overview of other author's work over the last forty years, but there are also some minor original results: For example, that coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are UFD's (Corollary 3.23), that the Deodhar decomposition is not a stratification in Lie type A (Section 4.3) and explicit descriptions of the Deodhar decomposition in terms of ranks of submatrices (Section 4.4).

Abstract:We study the ring of sections A(X) of a complete symmetric variety X, that is of the wonderful completion of G/H where G is an adjoint semi-simple group and H is the fixed subgroup for an involutorial automorphism of G. We find generators for Pic(X), we generalize the PRV conjecture to complete symmetric varieties and construct a standard monomial theory for A(X) that is compatible with G orbit closures in X. This gives a degeneration result and the rational singularityness for A(X).
