Abstract:We construct an interesting topological cover of the multiplicative group of the real line, related to Tate's elliptic curve with $q = e^\pi$. We use the language of homological algebra, 2D Lorentz geometry and high-school trigonometry; the intent is expository but the suggested applications may be unusual.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:Within the Schottky problem, the study of special subvarieties of the Torelli locus has long been of great interest. We describe a representation-theoretic criterion for a Jacobian variety arising from a $G$-Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}^1$ branched at $3$ points to have complex multiplication (CM). For $G$ faithful metacyclic or dicyclic, we classify all such covers with Galois group $G$, identifying those that have CM. We compute the CM-field and type of Jacobian varieties arising from these covers, applying the representation theory of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_4)$. In particular, symplectic irreducible representations of $G$ are afforded by the Jacobian variety in the dicyclic case, giving rise to new examples of CM abelian varieties.

Abstract:We explore the canonical Grothendieck topology in some specific circumstances. First we use a description of the canonical topology to get a variant of Giraud's Theorem. Then we explore the canonical Grothendieck topology on the categories of sets and topological spaces; here we get a nice basis for the topology. Lastly, we look at the canonical Grothendieck topology on the category of $R$-modules.

Abstract:In 1966, David Mumford created a drawing of $\operatorname{Proj} \mathbb Z [X,Y]$ in his book, "Lectures on Curves on an Algebraic Surface". In following, he created a photo of a so-called 'arithmetic surface' $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$for his 1988 book, "The Red Book of Varieties and Schemes". The depiction presents the structure of $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$ as being interesting and pleasant and is a well-known picture in algebraic geometry. Taking inspiration from Mumford, we create a drawing similar to $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z_p [T]$, which has a lot of similarities with $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$.

Abstract:In the study of algebraic curves with many points over a finite field, a well known general problem is to understanding better the properties of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curves whose genera fall in the higher part of the spectrum of the genera of all $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curves. This problem is still open for genera smaller than $ \lfloor \frac{1}{6}(q^2-q+4) \rfloor$. In this paper we consider the case of $\mathfrak{g}=\frac{1}{8}(q-1)^2$ where $q\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ and the curve is the Galois cover of the Hermitian curve w.r.t to a cyclic automorphism group of order $4$. Our contributions concern Frobenius embedding, Weierstrass semigroups and automorphism groups.

The ring of projective invariants of eight points on the line via representation theory

Abstract:The ring of projective invariants of eight ordered points on the line is a quotient of the polynomial ring on V, where V is a fourteen-dimensional representation of S_8, by an ideal I_8, so the modular fivefold (P^1)^8 // GL(2) is Proj(Sym* (V)/I_8). We show that there is a unique cubic hypersurface S in PV whose equation s is skew-invariant, and that the singular locus of S is the modular fivefold. In particular, over Z[1/3], the modular fivefold is cut out by the 14 partial derivatives of s. Better: these equations generate I_8. In characteristic 3, the cubic s is needed to generate the ideal. The existence of such a cubic was predicted by Dolgachev. Over Q, we recover the 14 quadrics found by computer calculation by Koike, and our approach yields a conceptual representation-theoretic description of the presentation. Additionally we find the graded Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution in any characteristic. The proof over Q is by pure thought, using Lie theory and commutative algebra. Over Z, the assistance of a computer was necessary. This result will be used as the base case describing the equations of the moduli space of an arbitrary number of points on P^1, with arbitrary weighting, in a later paper, completing the program of our previous paper (Duke Math. J.). The modular fivefold, and corresponding ring, are known to have a number of special incarnations, due to Deligne-Mostow, Kondo, and Freitag-Salvati Manni, for example as ball quotients or ring of modular forms respectively.

Abstract:We strengthen our previous results regarding the moduli spaces of Zoll metrics and Zoll projective structures on S^2. In particular, we describe a concrete, open condition which suffices to guarantee that a totally real embedding of RP^2 in CP_2 arises from a unique Zoll projective structure on the 2-sphere. Our methods ultimately reflect the special role such structures play in the initial value problem for the 3-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl equations.

Abstract:We are interested in cyclic covers of the projective line which are totally ramified at all of their branch points. We begin with curves given by an equation of the form y n = f ( x ) y^{n}=f(x) , where f f is a polynomial of degree d d . Under a mild hypothesis, it is easy to see that all of the branch points must be Weierstrass points. Our main problem is to find the total Weierstrass weight of these points, B W BW . We obtain a lower bound for B W BW , which we show is exact if n n and d d are relatively prime. As a fraction of the total Weierstrass weight of all points on the curve, we get the following particularly nice asymptotic formula (as well as an interesting exact formula): lim d → ∞ B W g 3 − g = n + 1 3 ( n − 1 ) 2 , \begin{equation*} \lim _{d\to \infty }\frac {BW}{g^{3}-g}=\frac {n+1}{3(n-1)^{2}}, \end{equation*} where g g is the genus of the curve. In the case that n = 3 n=3 (cyclic trigonal curves), we are able to show in most cases that for sufficiently large primes p p , the branch points and the non-branch Weierstrass points remain distinct modulo p p .

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).

The multiplicity of cyclic coverings of a singularity of an algebraic variety

Abstract:Let $V$ be an affine algebraic variety, and let $p\in V$ be a singular point. For a regular function $g$ on $V$ such that $g(p)=0$ and for a positive integer $n$, we consider the cyclic covering $\phi_n\: V_n \to V$ of degree $n$ branched along the hypersurface defined by $g$. We will prove that for sufficiently large $n$, the tangent cone of $V_n$ at $\phi_n^{-1}(p)$ is, as an affine variety, the product of the tangent cone of the branch locus and the affine line. In particular, the multiplicity of the singularity $\phi_n^{-1}(p) \in V_n$, which is a function of $n$ determined by $V$ and $g$, remains constant for sufficiently large $n$. This result generalizes Tomaru's theorem for normal surface singularities.

Abstract:We introduce and motivate a conjecture about the existence of complete, 1-dimensional families of covers of an elliptic curve. If the conjecture holds, then it would imply a uniform lower bound of 5 for slope of the moduli space of curves. If the conjecture fails, this would itself be an interesting phenomenon worthy of explanation.

Abstract:We investigate projective properties of Lorentzian surfaces. In particular, we prove that if T is a non flat torus, then the index of its isometry group in its projective group is at most two. We also prove that any topologically finite noncompact surface can be endowed with a metric having a non isometric projective transformation of infinite order.

Abstract:A cover of normal varieties is exceptional over a finite field if the map on points over infinitely many extensions of the field is one-one. A cover over a number field is exceptional if it is exceptional over infinitely many residue class fields. The first result: The category of exceptional covers of a normal variety, Z, over a finite field, F_q, has fiber products, and therefore a natural Galois group (with permutation representation) limit. This has many applications to considering Poincare series attached to diophantine questions. The paper follows three lines: * The historical role of the Galois Theoretic property of exceptionality, first considered by Davenport and Lewis. * How the tower structure on the category of exceptional covers of a pair (Z,F_q) allows forming subtowers that separate known results from unknown territory. * The use of Serre's OIT, especially the GL_2 case, to consider cryptology periods and functional composition aspects of exceptionality. Abstract:We consider the moduli space of genus 4 curves endowed with a $g<^>1_3$ (which maps with degree 2 onto the moduli space of genus 4 curves). We prove that it defines a degree $\frac {1}{2}(3<^>{10}-1)$ cover of the nine-dimensional Deligne-Mostow ball quotient such that the natural divisors that live on that moduli space become totally geodesic (their normalizations are eight-dimensional ball quotients). This isomorphism differs from the one considered by S. Kondo, and its construction is perhaps more elementary, as it does not involve K3 surfaces and their Torelli theorem: the Deligne-Mostow ball quotient parametrizes certain cyclic covers of degree 6 of a projective line and we show how a level structure on such a cover produces a degree 3 cover of that line with the same discriminant, yielding a genus 4 curve endowed with a $g<^>1_3$.

Abstract:The {\it Weierstrass semigroup} of pole orders of meromorphic functions in a point $p$ of a smooth algebraic curve $C$ is a classical object of study; a celebrated problem of Hurwitz is to characterize which semigroups ${\rm S} \subset \mathbb{N}$ with finite complement are {\it realizable} as Weierstrass semigroups ${\rm S}= {\rm S}(C,p)$. In this note, we establish realizability results for cyclic covers $\pi: (C,p) \rightarrow (B,q)$ of hyperelliptic targets $B$ marked in hyperelliptic Weierstrass points; and we show that realizability is dictated by the behavior under $j$-fold multiplication of certain divisor classes in hyperelliptic Jacobians naturally associated to our cyclic covers, as $j$ ranges over all natural numbers.

Quaternionic Cartan coverings and applications

Abstract:We present the topological foundation for solvability of Multiplicative Cousin problems formulated on an axially symmetric domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb H.$ In particular, we provide a geometric construction of quaternionic Cartan coverings, which are generalizations of (complex) Cartan coverings as presented in Section 4 of [FP]. Because of the requirements of symmetry inherent to the domains of definition of quaternionic regular functions, the existence of quaternionic Cartan coverings of $\Omega$ is not a consequence of existence of complex Cartan coverings, because for the latter there are no requirements for the symmetries with respect to the real axis. Due to the special role of the real axis, also the covering restricted to $\Omega \cap \mathbb R$ has to have additional properties. All these required properties were achieved by starting from a particular symmetric tiling of the symmetric set $\Omega \cap (\mathbb R + i\mathbb R)$. Finally we provide an application of these results to prove the vanishing of 'antisymmetric' cohomology groups of planar symmetric domains for $n \geq 2$.

Abstract:We propose a conjecture regarding the integrally closedness of lattice polytopes with large lattice lengths. We demonstrate that a lattice simplex in dimension 3 (resp. 4) with lattice length of at least 2 (resp. 3 and no edge has lattice length 5) can be covered by dilated simplices of the form $sQ$, where integer $s\ge 2$ (resp. 3) and $Q$ is a lattice simplex. The covering property implies these simplices are integrally closed. As an application, we derive a simple criterion for the projective normality of ample line bundles on weighted projective spaces of dimension 3 (resp. 4). Along the way, we discover certain unexpected phenomenon.
