Abstract:For pseudocapacitors, the electrode material plays a vital role in the electrochemical properties. Among various electrode materials, spinel nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) has been widely investigated as an advanced electrode material owing to its better electronic conductivity (two orders of magnitude higher than conventional transition metal oxides), low cost, and high availability. With all the excitement about new electrode materials, less attention has been paid to their dynamic storage mechanism that commonly exhibit intriguing capacitive activation during charge/discharge cycling. Here, we report a simple and cost-effective approach to the synthesis of hierarchical mesporous Co3O4@NiCo2O4 nanoforests on Ni foam for supercapacitor (SC) electrode applications by a coupled one-step solution and annealing process. The synthesized electrode exhibits capacitive activation during charge-discharge cycling (from 0.73 F/cm2 of the pristine state to the peak value of 1.12 F/cm2 after 2000 cycles with only 1.8% loss compared to the peak capacitance after another 2000 cycles). Using ex situ TEM characterization and electrical test, We attribute such dynamic capacitive activation to (1) enlarged electroactive surface area through the formation of Co3O4@NiCo2O4 core-shell structure and (2) enhanced electrical conductivity by forming oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups during charge-discharge cycling. Our findings provide a scientific explanation for the capacitive activation in cobalt oxide-binary nickel cobaltite compounds, and a new design guideline for the development of capacitive activation enabled, high performance transitional oxide electrodes. Abstract:The development of electrode materials with excellent performance serves as the key for researchers to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors. Cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) nanomaterials have been regarded as one of the most prospective electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitance and excellent electrical conductivity. In this paper, three kinds of CoMoO4 nanorods were prepared directly via simple and environmentally friendly solid-phase chemical reactions with solid inorganic salts as raw materials. According to X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test results, different reagents had certain effects on the size and morphology of CoMoO4, and these affected its electrochemical performance. In particular, the samples prepared with Co(NO3)2·6H2O as raw material took on a more uniform micromorphology, with a better crystallinity. Simultaneously, electrochemical test results showed that the samples synthesized with Co(NO3)2·6H2O presented relatively good electrical conductivity and a large specific capacitance (177 F g−1). This may be due to the nitrates reacting more slowly during the reaction and the crystals having difficulty aggregating during growth. Therefore, the structure of the prepared CoMoO4 nanomaterial was more uniform, and it was resistant to collapse during the charging and discharging process; thus, the capacitor presents the best performance.

Abstract:Porous Co3O4 with different structures have been synthesized by annealing cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) parallelepiped microcrystals. The transformation process of nanostructures at different temperatures has been investigated, which involves the depletion of Co-MOF core, formation, and crystal growth of cobalt oxide shell. Porous hollow parallelepipeds and microsheets can be obtained at 400 and 500 °C, respectively. When evaluated as electrode materials for supercapacitors, Co3O4 hollow parallelepipeds exhibit better electrochemical performances compared to Co3O4 microsheets, which can be attributed to the unique 3D hierarchical hollow structure and small particle size.

Abstract:Adjusting the microstructure is an available strategy to obtain high-performance electrode materials. Herein, we propose a promising and simple hydrothermal method to prepare Co3O4 with improved electrochemical performance by adjusting its microstructure. Co3O4 with different morphologies in the form of band-like, chrysanthemum-like and feather-like can be easily obtained by adjusting the amount of urea in solutions. After analysis, the band-like and feather-like Co3O4 are dominated by surface-control during the oxidation reaction process, while chrysanthemum-like Co3O4 is dominated by diffusion-control during the oxidation reaction process. The experimental results show that the chrysanthemum-like structure of Co3O4 composed of nanowires can be obtained when urea addition is 7 mmol, and it exhibits exciting specific capacity (122.3 mAh g−1 at 1 A/g) and higher rate capability (70% at 20 A/g). Surprisingly, the specific capacity is still 100% of the initial value after 3000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with activated carbon as anode and Co3O4 as cathode outputs high specific energy (35.3 Wh/kg at 788.8 W/Kg), good cycle stability (capacity retention rate of 82.6% after 10,000 cycles) and excellent coulombic efficiency. These results fully demonstrate that Co3O4 prepared in this work has great potential as an energy storage electrode material.

Abstract:A hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure deposited onto nickel foam was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process. The results demonstrate that the hybrid architecture exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including the specific capacitance of 1040C g−1 at 1 A g−1 for hybrid structures, high energy density of 87.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 2700 W kg−1 for an as-assembled supercapacitor and excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 99% undergoing 8000 charge-discharge for the device. Moreover, it also shows favorable electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 237 mV at 20 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction and 114 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction, and low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. In addition, the stability maintains well for the long-term use of 13 h. We believe that this hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure could be a promising candidate for future energy storage and conversion.

Porous Co3O4 Materials Prepared by Solid-State Thermolysis of a Novel Co-MOF Crystal and Their Superior Energy Storage Performances for Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, porous Co3O4 materials were prepared via a solid-state conversion process of a freshly prepared cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) crystal. Herein, the unique Co-MOF crystal was formed via the specific chemical coordination between the carboxylic ligand azobenzene-3,5,4'-tricarboxylic acid (H(3)ABTC) and the auxiliary ligand 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) to construct 2-dimensional (2D) bilayer structural intermediates, which subsequently formed a 3D polycatenation supramolecular array architecture with the assistance of pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. Subsequently, porous Co3O4 particles were obtained by simple thermolysis of the Co-MOF crystals via a two-step calcination treatment. The results demonstrated that the as-made Co3O4 displays crystalline and well-defined porous features and can be applied as a supercapacitor electrode, and its energy storage performances were investigated in 2 M KOH electrolyte. The electrochemical results showed that the porous Co3O4 particles exhibit a high specific capacitance of 150 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) and retain slightly enhanced capacitance after 3400 cycles, which could be ascribed to its higher specific surface area and accessible channel structural features. The present approach is facile, controllable, and reproducible. Importantly, this specific solid-state thermal conversion strategy could be easily extended to prepare other porous metal and/or metal oxide nanomaterials with specific surface textures and morphologies.

Abstract:Supercapacitor, as a new energy storage device, holds the advantages of high-power density and fast charging/discharging rate. Then, ternary compounds have excellent electrochemical properties. In this paper, KCu7S4 @CoMoO4 with core-shell structure was prepared by two-step hydrothermal method. In this structure, CoMoO4 nanosheets in-situ grows on KCu7S4 microwires, which increases the active sites and provides plenty of ion transfer channels. The electrochemical performance and synergistic effect of KCu7S4 @CoMoO4 are investigated. The rational design of KCu7S4 @CoMoO4 core-shell structure is benefic to electrochemical performance, and the specific capacitance is as high as 2344 F/g at the current density of 0.5 A/g. An asymmetric supercapacitor presented the energy density of 84.31 Wh/kg at the power density of 254.12 W/kg. The device also displayed good cycle performance, and the capacity retention rate is 88.1% after 3500 cycles at 20 A/g. The results demonstrated that the KCu7S4 @CoMoO4 core-shell structure has great potential in supercapacitor.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are promising environmentally friendly energy storage devices owing to their high-power density, fast charge and discharge rates, long service life, wide applicable temperature range, and green environmental protection. Electrodes largely determine superconductor performance, so it is crucial to develop electrode materials with excellent performance. In this work, MnxCoyO4 @MoS2 composites were obtained by coating flake MoS2 arrays on spherical MnxCoyO4 using hydrothermal and heat treatment methods. At x/y = 1:2, the MnxCoyO4 @MoS2 electrode material exhibited a specific capacitance of 1422 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, which was higher than that at x/y = 1:1 and 2:1. When assembled into an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor, the proposed electrode material provided a specific capacitance of 131 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. The promising cycle life of the electrode material was further illustrated by the fact that capacity retention of 85% was obtained after 5000 cycles, and the device retained a specific power of 794 W kg−1 with 46.58 Wh kg−1. The proposed electrode material design, therefore, provides new ideas to be used in the development of advanced electrodes.

Abstract:3D Co3O4@CoMoO4 core–shell architectures directly grown on nickel foam for supercapacitor electrode were obtained by two-step hydrothermal process. The Co3O4@CoMoO4 nanocomposites electrode exhibited higher capacitance than Co3O4 nanowire electrode. Maximum specific capacitance of 2530Fg−1 was obtained at current density of 1Ag−1 for Co3O4@CoMoO4 core–shell architectures. In addition, after 3000cycles of continuous galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles, only about 3.7% degradation in specific capacitance could be noticed. The CoMoO4 nanorods stack on Co3O4 nanowires arrays allowed facile electrolyte movement during charge or discharge process and provided more active sites for the electrochemical reactions. The unique architecture had a large interfacial area and numerous channels for rapid diffusion of electrolyte ions and fast electron transport. In addition, the synergetic effect between Co3O4 nanowire and CoMoO4 nanorods also improved the supercapacitor performance.
Highly stable supercapacitive performance of a (3, 4, 6‐ c )‐connected 2D Co‐MOF

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) used directly in supercapacitors have been worldwide research interest for their potential high performance. Herein, one new 2D Co‐based MOF, [CoCo0.5Co0.5(μ–ppa)2(H2O)3]n, namely (BBU‐1) has been synthesized through solvothermal method with the ligand H2ppa (H2ppa = 3‐(pyrazin‐2‐yl)‐1H‐pyrazole‐5‐carboxylic acid). Single X‐ray diffraction analysis shows that, the BBU‐1 exhibits a (3, 4, 6‐c)‐connected 2D structure bridged through the carboxylic group, with the topological point symbol of {3·4·5}2{32·42·52·62·74·82·9}{32·62·72}. PXRD Rietveld refinement also has been employed to confirm the structure. The Co‐MOF electrode showed a high specific capacitance and a good cycling stability. Its maximum specific capacitance was 134.5 F g‐1 at 3 mV s‐1, and the specific capacitance retention is about 91.3% after 1000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g−1 in the 2 M KOH solution. These results show that the pristine 2D Co‐MOF is an excellent candidate of electrode active material for electrochemical energy storage.

Effect of coating MoS 2 nanoflakes onto CuCo 2 O 4 on the electrochemical performance as electrode materials of supercapacitors

Abstract:CuCo 2 O 4 @MoS 2 microflowers have been synthesized on Ni foam using a hydrothermal method, and their electrochemical performances as supercapacitor electrodes are investigated. The influence of MoS 2 loading on the specific capacity and cycle stability of the nanocomposites is systematically analyzed. It is found that the addition of MoS 2 significantly enhances the specific capacity of the CuCo 2 O 4 microflowers, while the cycle stability varies with MoS 2 content. Competitive mechanistic insights into the interplay between MoS 2 content, electrochemical behavior, and structural stability during cycling are provided. Notably, the CuCo 2 O 4 @MoS 2 -60 sample exhibits an impressive specific capacity of 11.1 F cm −2 at a discharge current density of 0.003 A cm −2 , with a remarkable capacity retention rate of 94.6% after 1800 charge–discharge cycles. Moreover, the practical application prospects are demonstrated through the fabrication of symmetric supercapacitors. This study offers valuable guidance for the rational design and optimization of CuCo 2 O 4 @MoS 2 nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Regulation preferred crystal plane and oxygen vacancy of CoWO4 with morphology remolding to boost electrochemical performances for battery-supercapacitor hybrid device electrode

Abstract:Crystal plane engineering and defect engineering are feasible approaches to tune the electrochemical performance of nanocmaterials. Herein, a carambola-like CoWO4 microsphere with preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies is synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process together with post annealing treatment. The in-depth observation on microstructure and electrochemical tests suggest that it is the new preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies in CoWO4 that improves conductivity and reaction activity to lead to a much higher capacity. Further density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that tuning the preferred crystal plane and introduction of oxygen vacancy into CoWO4 not only effectively enhance electronic conductivity, but also promote OH− adsorption/desorption, and reduce electronic transmission barrier. As a result, the as-obtained carambola-like CoWO4 microsphere with preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies delivers high specific capacity (493.7 C g−1/137.1 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1) with superior rate capability (148.6 C g−1/41.3 mA h g−1 at 15 A g−1). Moreover, the cycling-induced morphology evolution lead to unconventional capacity increasing during cycling. The as-fabricated A-CoWO4//6 M KOH//activated carbon (AC) BSH device exhibits a maximum energy density of 27.5 Wh kg−1 at 1031.4 W kg−1 and 95.7% capacity retention after 12000 cycles. This work provides a possible way to improve the electrochemical performances of other metal oxide electrodes with low-capacity and irreversibility.

Abstract:Heteroatomic doping has a significant effect on improving the electrochemical energy storage of metal oxide electrode materials and has been applied in the field of supercapacitors. However, there are few reports on the co-doping of anions and cations into transition metal oxides as the electrode materials in supercapacitors. Herein, the Mo, S co-doped CoNiO2 electrode material with tremella-like nano-structures was successfully prepared on nickel foam (denoted as NiCoMoO-S@NF) via two-step hydrothermal procedures and UV-light irradiation. The co-doping of Mo and S gives the CoNiO2 material a higher specific surface area of 113.98 m2 g-1, abundant active site, and improved electrical conductivity. The obtained NiCoMoO-S@NF shows a high specific capacity of 999.1C g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. Moreover, the hybrid supercapacitor device assembled by NiCoMoO-S@NF and rGO@NF can obtain a great energy density of 38.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 2880 W kg-1 and shows good cycling stability of 71.6 % capacity retention after 6500 cycles, indicating the excellent super -capacitive properties of NiCoMoO-S@NF and its potential application in supercapacitors.
CoMoO4 Nanoflowers Doped with La Element for Advanced Electrode Materials

Abstract:La-CoMoO4 was prepared as the electrode material for supercapacitors using the freeze-drying method. The physical and structural properties of the prepared electrode La-CoMoO4 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We further investigated the electrochemical performance of La-CoMoO4 electrode materials through cyclic voltammetry, constant current charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The research results indicate that compared with CoMoO4 material (1400 F/g), La-CoMoO4 material has a high specific capacitance of 2248 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. In addition, La-CoMoO4 has a high stability, with a capacitance retention rate of up to 99.2% after 5500 cycles. Finally, supercapacitor devices using La-CoMoO4 material as the positive electrode have a high energy density of 55 Wh/Kg (power density of 1000 W/Kg), making them a promising electrode material.

Abstract:Microspherical shaped cobalt–manganese oxide (CMO) as electrode materials for supercapacitor is synthesized by solvothermal method. The microstructure and surface morphology of CMO are characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry are employed for the characteristics of electrode process and the calculation of specific capacitance in KOH solution. It is shown that as prepared CMO with cobalt/manganese mole ratio of 1:2 has excellent specific capacitance of 348.0Fg−1 at current density of 0.5Ag−1. In addition, long-term stability of the composites electrode is measured at current density of 1.0Ag−1, and 58.6% of initial capacitance is retained after 500 cycles.
Influence of phase transition with annealing temperature on structural, morphological, and supercapacitive characteristics of molybdenum oxide nanostructures

Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects

Abstract:In this study, molybdenum oxide nanostructures (MoO 3 NSs) were effectively synthesized through a simple, low-cost, surfactant-free, low-temperature, and scalable chemical co-precipitation method and investigated their synergistic effect with annealing temperature on energy storage applications for the first time. Herein, we have reported a phase transition of MoO 3 NSs from hexagonal to orthorhombic after the annealing temperature varied from 100°C to 500°C at constant time. Additionally, the resultant NSs were thoroughly examined for their physio-chemical characteristics, which revealed the stable phase formation of the MoO 3 NSs, respectively. Furthermore, the electroactive MoO 3 NSs were pasted on Ni-foam substrate (M@NF), and electrochemical properties were evaluated using a three-electrode setup at room-air temperature in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte across the potential range of 0 V to 0.786 V. As a result, the M@NF-5 electrode exhibited an impressive specific capacitance of 976.84 F g −1 at a scan rate of 1 mV s −1 , a higher energy density of 73.69 Wh kg −1 , and a power density of 655 W kg −1 at 5 mA g −1 The non-linear galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) profile aligns well with the cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. Both CV and GCD techniques confirm the pseudocapacitive behavior, with 83% capacitive retention observed after 2000 cycles. The fabricated symmetric device (M@NF-5//M@NF-5) exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 67.35 F g −1 at 5 mA g −1 and with an energy density of 18 Wh kg −1 , and a power density of 1750 W kg −1 at a specific current. These findings underscore the potential of chemically deposited α-MoO 3 as an auspicious material for use in supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The amorphous CoMoS4 is prepared using a simple precipitation method and for the first time used as a supercapacitor material. Surprisingly, it possesses very good electrochemical behavior owing to its amorphous structure and multiple oxidation states. In a three-electrode system, the ratio capacitance of CoMoS4 sample can reach 661Fg−1 at a current density of 1Ag−1. In the actual application of CoMoS4, the CoMoS4 symmetric device shows the ratio capacitance of 142Fg−1 at 2Ag−1; the assembled CoMoS4//rGO hybrid supercapacitor also owns a high ratio capacitance of 68Fg−1 at 1Ag−1 with energy and power densities of 27.2Whkg−1 at 400Wkg−1 and 17Whkg−1 at 2400Wkg−1. Further the hybrid supercapacitor has good capacitance retention (86% after 10,000 cycles), low internal and Warburg resistances.
