Abstract:Binary transition metal sulfides are considered to be a promising material for supercapacitors, possessing richer electrochemically active sites and superior electrochemical performance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are often used as self-sacrificing templates in the preparation of metal sulfides. Usually, direct sulfidation of MOFs tends to cause collapse of the morphological structure and blockage of the ion transport channels, so that the morphology of the original MOF template can be well preserved by using pyrolysis followed by S ion exchange. In this paper, we first prepared NiCo-MOF-74 on nickel foam by an transformation method from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) through a ligand exchange reaction. Then, CoNiS was synthesized in two steps involving the pyrolysis of NiCo-MOF-74 and a subsequent S ion exchange reaction. Compared with direct sulfidation, this synthetic strategy can well maintain the rod-like morphology of MOF-74 arrays and prevent structural collapse. The surface of CoNiS has a fine nanosheet structure, which exposes more active sites and shows a high specific capacitance of 7.50 F cm at 2 mA cm and an excellent Coulomb efficiency (96.32%). In addition, the hybrid supercapacitor assembled with activated carbon shows a high energy density of 0.64 mW h cm at a power density of 1.64 mW cm and a high capacitance retention of 88.39% after 5000 cycles. These results indicate that rod-shaped CoNiS can be controllably prepared from MOF-74 involving an exchange reaction and has promising application in high-performance supercapacitors.
Formation of Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets and Their Derived Porous Nickel-Cobalt Sulfides for Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great advantages as new kinds of active materials for energy storage. In this study, bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Ni/Co-MOFs) with nanosheet-assembled flower-like structures were synthesized by etching Ni-MOF microspheres in a cobalt nitrate solution. It can be clearly observed that the amount of Co(NO3)2 and etching time play crucial roles in the formation of Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets. The Ni/Co-MOFs were used as electrode materials for supercapacitors and the optimized Ni/Co-MOF-5 exhibited the highest capacitances of 1220.2 F g-1 and 986.7 F g-1 at current densities of 1 A g-1 and 10 A g-1, respectively. Ni/Co-MOF-5 was further sulfurized, and the derived Ni-Co-S electrode showed a higher specific capacitance of 1377.5 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a retention of 89.4% when the current density was increased to 10 A g-1, indicating superior rate capability. Furthermore, Ni/Co-MOF-5 and Ni-Co-S showed excellent cycling stability, i.e. about 87.8% and 93.7% of initial capacitance can be still maintained after 3000 cycles of charge-discharge. More interestingly, the Ni/Co-MOF-5//AC ASC shows an energy density of 30.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1132.8 W kg-1, and the Ni-Co-S//AC ASC displays a high energy density of 36.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1066.42 W kg-1. These results demonstrate that the as-synthesized bimetallic Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets and their derived nickel-cobalt sulfides have promising applications in electrochemical supercapacitors.

Abstract:The development of electrode materials with excellent performance serves as the key for researchers to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors. Cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) nanomaterials have been regarded as one of the most prospective electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitance and excellent electrical conductivity. In this paper, three kinds of CoMoO4 nanorods were prepared directly via simple and environmentally friendly solid-phase chemical reactions with solid inorganic salts as raw materials. According to X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test results, different reagents had certain effects on the size and morphology of CoMoO4, and these affected its electrochemical performance. In particular, the samples prepared with Co(NO3)2·6H2O as raw material took on a more uniform micromorphology, with a better crystallinity. Simultaneously, electrochemical test results showed that the samples synthesized with Co(NO3)2·6H2O presented relatively good electrical conductivity and a large specific capacitance (177 F g−1). This may be due to the nitrates reacting more slowly during the reaction and the crystals having difficulty aggregating during growth. Therefore, the structure of the prepared CoMoO4 nanomaterial was more uniform, and it was resistant to collapse during the charging and discharging process; thus, the capacitor presents the best performance.

Abstract:3D Co3O4@CoMoO4 core–shell architectures directly grown on nickel foam for supercapacitor electrode were obtained by two-step hydrothermal process. The Co3O4@CoMoO4 nanocomposites electrode exhibited higher capacitance than Co3O4 nanowire electrode. Maximum specific capacitance of 2530Fg−1 was obtained at current density of 1Ag−1 for Co3O4@CoMoO4 core–shell architectures. In addition, after 3000cycles of continuous galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles, only about 3.7% degradation in specific capacitance could be noticed. The CoMoO4 nanorods stack on Co3O4 nanowires arrays allowed facile electrolyte movement during charge or discharge process and provided more active sites for the electrochemical reactions. The unique architecture had a large interfacial area and numerous channels for rapid diffusion of electrolyte ions and fast electron transport. In addition, the synergetic effect between Co3O4 nanowire and CoMoO4 nanorods also improved the supercapacitor performance.
Nanoengineering of ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structures for supercapacitor and water splitting applications

Abstract:A hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure deposited onto nickel foam was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process. The results demonstrate that the hybrid architecture exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including the specific capacitance of 1040C g−1 at 1 A g−1 for hybrid structures, high energy density of 87.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 2700 W kg−1 for an as-assembled supercapacitor and excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 99% undergoing 8000 charge-discharge for the device. Moreover, it also shows favorable electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 237 mV at 20 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction and 114 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction, and low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. In addition, the stability maintains well for the long-term use of 13 h. We believe that this hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure could be a promising candidate for future energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is one of the most explored prospective materials for building effective supercapacitors (SCs). However, low energy density hinders their efficiency due to poor electrical conductivity and deficient active sites. We designed a binder-free MoS 2 /CoS composite with nickel foam (NF) as a substrate to address these concerns. XRD , SEM, EDS and XPS were used to examine the structural and morphological development of the MoS 2 /CoS composite. The capacitive performance of MoS 2 /CoS electrodes was determined using CV, GCD and EIS. For the three-electrode system, the area specific capacitance of the MoS 2 /CoS electrodes was 180 mF/cm 2 and 1931 mF/cm 2 in Na 2 SO 4 and KOH electrolytes respectively, with a current density of 5 mA/cm 2 . Also, the energy densities of SCs assembled in Na 2 SO 4 , and KOH electrolytes were 36.62 μWh/cm 2 and 268.33 μWh/cm 2 , with power densities of 1345.22 μW/cm 2 and 2100 μW/cm 2 , respectively. After 3000 cycles, the cycling stability of the devices in Na 2 SO 4 (and KOH) electrolyte was about 71.2% (and 73.3%), implying good electrochemical stability of the devices. These results indicate the potential application of binder-free MoS 2 /CoS composites as electrode materials for aqueous SCs in KOH and Na 2 SO 4 electrolytes.

Abstract:This work reports the synthesis of coaxial carbon@NiMoO4 nanofibers for supercapacitor electrode applications. Thin NiMoO4 nanosheets are uniformly coated on the conductive electrospun carbon nanofibers by a microwave assisted hydrothermal method to form a hierarchical structure, which increases the porosity as well as the conductivity of the electrode. The thickness of the NiMoO4 can be easily adjusted by varying the precursor concentrations. The high specific surface area (over 280 m2 g-1) and conductive carbon nanofiber backbone increase the utilization of the active pseudocapacitive NiMoO4 phase, resulting a high specific capacitance of 1840 F g-1.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metallic oxide compounds exhibit a tunable structure and intriguing activity and have received intensive investigation in recent years. Herein, this work reports metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived cobalt oxide/carbon nanotubes (MWCNTx@Co3O4) composites by calcining the MWCNTx@ZIF-67 precursor in one step. The morphology and structure of the composite were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization. The compositions and valence states of the compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Benefiting from the structurally stable MOFs-derived porous cobalt oxide frameworks and the homogeneous conductive carbon nanotubes, the synthesized MWCNTx@Co3O4 composites display a maximum specific capacitance of 206.89 F·g−1 at 1.0 A·g−1. In addition, the specific capacitance of the MWCNT3@Co3O4//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric capacitor reaches 50 F·g−1, and has an excellent electrochemical performance. These results suggest that the MWCNTx@Co3O4 composites can be a potential candidate for electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Co3O4@MnO2 core-shell arrays hybrid electrode directly grown on Ni foam for supercapacitor was obtained by two-step hydrothermal processes. Co3O4@MnO2 core-shell arrays hybrid electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1920 F g(-1) at current density of 1 A g(-1). This was attributed to relative high conductivity of the Co3O4 nanowire arrays and the large surface area provided by the ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets. The porous MnO2 nanosheets stack provided numerous channels for rapid diffusion of electrolyte ions and fast electron transport, which enhanced the electrochemical reactions. The synergetic effect between Co3O4 nanowire and MnO2 nanosheets also improved the supercapacitor performance. Amorphous CoMoS4 for a valuable energy storage material candidate

Abstract:The amorphous CoMoS4 is prepared using a simple precipitation method and for the first time used as a supercapacitor material. Surprisingly, it possesses very good electrochemical behavior owing to its amorphous structure and multiple oxidation states. In a three-electrode system, the ratio capacitance of CoMoS4 sample can reach 661Fg−1 at a current density of 1Ag−1. In the actual application of CoMoS4, the CoMoS4 symmetric device shows the ratio capacitance of 142Fg−1 at 2Ag−1; the assembled CoMoS4//rGO hybrid supercapacitor also owns a high ratio capacitance of 68Fg−1 at 1Ag−1 with energy and power densities of 27.2Whkg−1 at 400Wkg−1 and 17Whkg−1 at 2400Wkg−1. Further the hybrid supercapacitor has good capacitance retention (86% after 10,000 cycles), low internal and Warburg resistances.

One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of MoO2/MoS2 Nanocomposites as High-Performance Electrode Material for Supercapacitors.

Abstract:By only changing the ratio of Mo to S source, a distinctive single phase MoO2 or MoS2 and MoO2/MoS2 nanocomposites (NCs) are obtained through a simple one-step hydrothermal method based on CH4N2S as a sulfur source and (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O as a source of Mo in oxalic acid. The effect of ratio of Mo to S source on the composition, structure, and electrochemical performance are systematically researched. Due to its unique design, abundant macropores active sites in MoO2/MoS2 NCs induce superior rate property (55.30% capacitance retention to 20 from 1 A g-1) and larger specific capacitance (1667.3 F g-1 at 1 A g-1) and longer cycle life (94.75% after 5000 cycles) as used directly as an electrode. Furthermore, at a power density of 225 W kg-1, a maximal energy density of 21.85 Wh kg-1 is provided by the asymmetric supercapacitor (MoO2/MoS2//AC). The capacitance of asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is remarkably enhanced by 129.02% under 5000 cycles at a current density of 1.5 A g-1, demonstrating outstanding cycle property. These results imply the prepared MoO2/MoS2 NCs have promising applications in advanced energy storages. It is important and should be noted that NCs of oxide and sulfide are prepared with only a simple one-step process.

Abstract:As ordered porous materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention in the field of energy conversion and storage due to their high specific surface area, permanent porosity, and tunable pore sizes. Here, MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposites with regular octahedral shape were synthesized using a Mn-based analogue of the MIL-100 framework (Mn-MIL-100, MIL: Matérial Institut Lavoisier) as the precursor. Using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM), MnO nanocages with a diameter of approximately 20 nm were recognized in the MnO/C nanocomposites fabricated, dispersed in a microporous carbon matrix homogeneously. The nanocages are composed of MnO nanoparticles with a diameter of approximately 2 nm and with a single crystal structure. The specific surface area of the as-prepared MnO/C octahedra decreases to 256 m2 g−1 from 507 m2 g−1 of the Mn-MIL-100 precursor, whereas the total pore volume increases to 0.245 cm3 g−1, which is approximately 29% higher than that of the precursor (0.190 cm3 g−1). Additionally, when utilized as an electrode for supercapacitors, the MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposite demonstrates a towering specific capacitance of 421 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and good cycle stability (94%) after 5000 cycles. Our work reveals that the MnO nanoparticles in MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposites exhibit nanocage structure characteristics, which might be inherited from the Mn-MIL-100 precursor with analogous supertetrahedron units.

Abstract:Nanostructured Co3O4 materials attracted significant attention due to their exceptional electrochemical (pseudo-capacitive) properties. However, rigorous preparation conditions are needed to control the size (especially nanosize), morphology and size distribution of the products obtained by conventional methods. Herein, we describe a novel one step shape-controlled synthesis of uniform Co3O4 nanocubes with a size of 50 nm with the existence of mesoporous carbon nanorods (meso-CNRs). In this synthesis process, meso-CNRs not only act as a heat receiver to directly obtain Co3O4 eliminating the high-temperature post-calcination, but also control the morphology of the resulting Co3O4 to form nanocubes with uniform distribution. More strikingly, mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes are obtained by further thermal treatment. The structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A possible formation mechanism of mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes is proposed here. Electrochemical tests have revealed that the prepared mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes demonstrate a remarkable performance in supercapacitor applications due to the porous structure, which endows fast ion and electron transfer.
Controllable synthesis of CoMoO4-modified NiMoO4: a stepwise chemical etching method of materials for hybrid supercapacitors

Abstract:Multi-component electrode materials with novel structures are highly pursued to the assembly of high-performance hybrid supercapacitors. In this paper, we have prepared CoMoO 4 -modified NiMoO 4 and nitrogen-doped porous carbon by using α-MoO 3 and ZIF-8/ZIF-67 as sacrificial templates. In particular, α-MoO 3 and ZIF-67 were also used as the molybdenum and cobalt sources for the in situ synthesis of NiMoO 4 and CoMoO 4 , respectively. The structural construction and surface modification of the NiMoO 4 electrode were realized under mild reaction conditions. As compared with the pristine NiMoO 4 , the electrochemical properties of CoMoO 4 -modified NiMoO 4 were significantly improved. The maximal capacity of the CoMoO 4 -modified NiMoO 4 under 3-electrode system is 522.5 C g −1 . When the power density is 800 W kg −1 , the maximum energy density of the hybrid supercapacitor based on CoMoO 4 -modified NiMoO 4 and nitrogen-doped porous carbon is 41.29 Wh kg −1 . All electrochemical results indicate that multi-component electrodes prepared by our sacrificial template strategy have the possibility to be applied in hybrid energy storage equipment.

Ethanol-assisted Solvothermal Synthesis of Porous Nanostructured Cobalt Oxides (coo/co3o4) for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:The porous mixed-phase CoO/Co3O4 nanocomposites have been prepared by a facile ethanol-assisted solvothermal approach without a subsequent calcination process and the composites are formed by aggregations of many nanoparticles with an average diameter of 5 ± 2 nm. The porous structures are verified by BET test results with a typical type-IV isotherm curve and a high surface area (∼186.27 m2 g−1). Electrochemical properties are characterized by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The CoO/Co3O4 electrode exhibits a high capacitance of 451 Fg−1 at a current density of 1 Ag−1, which is higher than that of the pure CoO electrode (203 Fg−1). Interestingly, the CoO/Co3O4 shows a low equivalent series resistance (0.16 Ω) and superior cycle stability (108% retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on this hybrid CoO/Co3O4 and activated carbon can deliver an energy density of 10.52 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 140 W kg−1. These results indicate the CoO/Co3O4 composites will be a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical Co3O4@MnO2 nanosheet (NS) hybrid nanostructures are grown on carbon cloth by a facile method combining the metal–organic framework (MOF) templating process and electrodeposition. Due to the synergetic effect between Co3O4 triangle NSs and MnO2 NSs and the unique structure with large surface area and numerous channels for ion diffusion, the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NS array electrode shows good electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance of 644.8 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, remarkable rate capability (capacitance retention of 64.5% at 20 A g−1) and excellent cycle performance (capacitance retention of 91% after 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1). The excellent electrochemical performance makes the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NSs promising candidates in supercapacitors.

Abstract:To overcome the disadvantages of poor intrinsic conductivity and stability of ZnCo2O4, a ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite as an emerging pseudocapacitor electrode material with high specific capacitance, environmental friendliness, morphological diversity, and unique hierarchical structure was synthesized via a simple two-step hydrothermal method. The research results indicate that the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite can present a high specific capacity of 1628 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and good cycling stability with 69% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g-1. Hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) assembled with the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 cathode and activated carbon anode can deliver an energy density of 48 W h kg-1 at a power density of 695 W kg-1, and their capacity retention reached 61% after 8000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1. This could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the specific surface area and electrical conductivity enhanced by compositing ZnCo2O4 with MnMoO4. As a result, the excellent electrochemical properties show that the ZnCo2O4@MnMoO4 composite has strong application potential for high-performance supercapacitors.
